Years ago, I was in and out of Thailand for a military training exercises, about 30 days each time (three “work trips” and one personal). We stayed in hotels and had the weekends/evenings off. Some of the scams and important security issues
    1. Thai police shot and killed Thai citizen outside our hotel. The citizen was in a vehicle and running into other cars in the parking lot on purpose, nearly hitting other Thai citizen. The officer posted outside our hotel didn’t hesitate to shoot. Our leadership launched an investigation. The officer couldn’t understand why it was such a big deal.
    2. If you are at a bar with live boxing/Muy Thai fights do not accept the open challenge to anybody in the audience. This was an order that was made clear before we even had our boots on the ground. A couple years before my first time in Thailand one of our guys accepted such an offer, and won. Our guy was known to be uncommonly tough amongst uncommonly tough men. He still suffer multiple significant injuries (broken ribs, nose, and foot I think).
I personally witnessed a large Englishman, unassociated with us, get clobbered by a Thai less than half his size. The Thai appeared to suffer zero damage. Matter of fact we saw him at a different bar later that night and he was unblemished, happily dancing. Nice guy too.
    3. She might be a boy. It’s a good idea to ask RESPECTFULLY. Most of the time people think you know what you’re getting into and if asked will respond honestly.
    4. Respect goes a long way in Thailand. As mentioned in the video, everybody knows everybody. If you are disrespectful expect to become the target of more scammers. Thais tend to honor the honorable and exploit the dishonorable. The quality of your actions will be known to locals before you meet them.
    5. Watch your drink. I personally was drugged on one occasion. I made it back to the hotel because locals that knew of me (I didn’t know them) poured me into the right guys tuktuk. It otherwise could have been very nasty.
    6. At the time the ice with the holes in it was store bought. This meant it was less likely to get you sick. The other ice is more likely to be frozen tap water. Personally I drank both without issue. Others with us get sick from drinking the local tap water.
I can extend this list if anybody ends up reading it and find it useful.

      7. While in Thailand you’re going to get laid, and probably a lot. On my third work trip to Thailand there was a young man back at the hotel with the day’s catch when a previous evenings company got into his room. You might be thinking she was there to lend a hand or two. She wasn’t. She stab him with intention of gutting him. See, he told her he loved her, was gonna marry her, only wanted her, babies blah blah blah. She was arrested and he was hospitalized. Many rumors circulated afterwards, some of which I started, and telling the exact nature of the events was difficult beyond a scorned lover and a young man that over promised to the point of lying.
You don’t need to lie to get laid. Just be yourself and if that doesn’t work, pay for it. If you do lie don’t let yourself lie about marriage or love (that was her fiancé cheating in that hotel room, not some random fling). And for the record, some guys left there married and made plans to bring their brides back.
      8. Just because they said it’s chicken doesn’t make it chicken. This one is on me. I was fairly drunk walking from one hangout to the next with a group of my buddies. There was a very old lady with kind eyes and a smile was only made up of a few teeth. She had a food stand on the edge of the road with a couple dozen meat skewers on there. I stopped and asked about the selection. Everything was “chicken”, even the ones that looked exactly like beef. Each stick was less than 1 bhat. I gave her about 100 bhat for two trying to be kind. I took a bite. Something was terribly wrong. This flavor is terrible. As I naturally swallowed before my brain had a chance to say otherwise, a dog made the unmistakable death yelp from a shack less than 10 meters away. The nasty old lady that got me to overpay for a snack was the only person I didn’t see flinch. I ate a stray dog.
      9. Keep track of and hide valuables. If you use your phone to trade stocks keep it a secret, looking at you Robinhood millionaires. A girl will go out with you, have a great time, laugh, dance, sing, eat, drink, and ask to comeback to your room. Once your attention is off of them they might swipe something shiny. My buddy had a watch stolen out of the bathroom. He thinks she put it in her prison purse. No way to know for sure if she stole the watch but she 100% stole the contents of the minibar.
      10. Waitress practicing medicine without INFORMED consent 😂. This one is on me again. I was sitting around the table with a few friends enjoying some drinks after dinner and the waitress asked if I wanted a back rub. Oh course I wanted a back rub! After a bit she asked if I wanted my neck done too. I thanked her and said yes. She tells me to completely relax as she firmly grabs my head. Next she does some 1990’s Chuck Norris neck snapping finishing move. I thought I died. My buddy’s looked at her like a terrorist that just assassinated me right in front of them. It turns out I almost immediately felt great, she either knew what she was doing or got lucky. We all laughed and stayed there the rest of the night living it up with the staff.
In this instance everything worked out and we had a laugh. I still think she nearly killed me.
      11. Some knowledge is dangerous. This next one I considered leaving out to avoid replication. I’m mentioning anyways because it is fairly unknown amongst targets and probably reasonably well known amongst the criminals. Mentioning it might balance things.
Underage girls will lie about their age, go to the targets hotel room, sleep with the target, and then blackmail them. In some countries the police are in on it and aid in the extortion. Other times a gang, or fake parents. The girl may seem like an honest hooker and look like they are in their mid 20’s. At the extreme end of this targets have sold their homes and made monthly payments for a long time.
This “can” be similarly performed with a girl saying she was assaulted in your room. This version, while terrible, is less effective. The obvious reason being there is no good excuse to have an underage girl in your room other than “I was conned by a child coached by criminals”. When the criminals recruit local law enforcement the is a nightmare (fake police reports).

been in Pattaya 20 years this year ..... never got scammed but had a few attempted pick pockets late at night while drunk. As A Pattaya expat ....the number one thing to be cautious of (at least here) are other dirtbag foreigners. Most of the drama here are from friends or former friends or acquaintances. I have heard lots of stories and had some drama myself. You learn over time how to pick your friends. Kuka in Pattaya

That’s 100 % true I’ve seen the absolute worst out of people in Pattaya and some fo the best people but overall I’ve decided it’s a not a great place to live in Thailand for me I can’t stand to look at these people they make me sick, it’s not the tropical paradise I came to Thailand searching for that’s for sure but the nightlife is still unbeatable and the woman are great fun… good luck to you Kuka 👍

I forgot my ATM card twice while in Thailand. I was able to recover one.
At Tilac in Cowboy, I bought myself and a lady drink, checked the tab and it was double, I pointed it out to the staff, she shrugged, so I payed and I made sure to never go back. Always check your bill after every order.

I got done once in Lighthouse too many a year back, but I argued my cause and it was OK in the end, but left a sour taste in my mouth. Wonder why they would try scam when they lose customers that way? Odd business strategy

    • @1pirate
      @1pirate 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

@@goonerdoy I'm a big fan of Lighthouse. I was in Bangkok during the first 9 months of Covid and was almost at Lighthouse every night. I got to know the regulars, the staff and the owners. The owners of Lighthouse also own Shark, and some bars on Walking Street.
If the bill is padded it isn't the owners that want that (generally). It is the bar staff that is trying to make more money.
At the time they doubled my bill at Tilac it was early in the night, so no higher ups were around for me to complain to.

I have completely avoided the gogo bars etc due to countless stories of people getting fleeced and jumped., the taxi 'no meter' scam is so frustrating so it can sometimes take an extra 10 - 15 minutes to go anywhere. Like someone else mentioned, also beware renting a bike then it getting stolen, some rental places will have people wait out at tourist spots etc then steal their own bike back then you are screwed and haveto pay for the bike.
And when it comes to the women.. as nice and sweet and innocent as they seem., in the end they will fleece as much money out of you as they can and have multiple other 'boyfriends' at the same time, so don't expect a serious relationship, those who disagree are either in denial or think the one they have is one of the good ones lol

One important think you might mention is to avoid confrontation with locals or bar staff. If you can't resolve a dispute rationally, just pay the bill and move on. Thais seem low key most of the time, but if things escalate over money or if you get into a heated argument over anything, you could be jumped by 5 or 6 people including bar security and kicked in the head while down. It's not worth risking a serious gang beating for your ego or a few hundred baht. I've never dealt with this personally but I've read about it enough to know to avoid confrontation.

    • @keisone
      @keisone  2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

Happened once in Chiang Mai and the other time in Hoi An. Both times got it back. In Chiang Mai someone handed it into the bank. In Hoi An the security guard came running after me. I'm not sure I would be that lucky twice back home!!

Another Pro Tip : if your planning on renting a scooter , get you International Drivers Permit (IDP) from your home country prior to coming , the police very often stand in groups on the side of the road and waive you over ( as seen at 3:20 of this video ) and if your not in possession of an IDP your gonnna be getting a 300-500 baht fine ( your home country license alone is not enough ) this I know from experience , but what I don’t know from experience but what I’ve been told ….. if you do get a ticket, hold onto it because apparently you can only get a ticket for the same offense “ once “ per day . I’ve been waived over multiple times in one day, and although the police are very friendly, apparently they don’t need a reason to pull you over .

    • @pandiculation194
      @pandiculation194 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Technically a USA drivers license is considered an international drivers license. How ever most of the cops do not know this. They have also seen memos released to them that all foreigners must have this IDP with out mentioning the exception so they write you up anyway. Away from here in the country it is manageable but Pattaya Police are corrupt and seek out the tourist on a motor bike. Even if you have the permit it is still a hassle. never never never drive drunk.

I have rented scooters from Vietnam to Indonesia to Thailand DOZENS of times and have NEVER had a problem or been pulled over by the police. Chances are you will be just fine unless you are stupid. There are lots of stupid tourists and they only have themselves to blame for the various ways they fuck up. That is not a normal person's problem so if you are normal, don't worry, you'll be fine. If you are a moron, you will get into trouble everywhere. Not my problem.

I haven’t been to Thailand since 1967, we were living in Singapore at the time. I was about 15/16 at the time and a boarder at The Tonbridge school, my Father was captain of a tanker which ran high octane fuel to Singapore - loading was a nteresting process, carried out ship to ship, in outer roads of Singapore har blur. My younger brother died in Thailand four years ago, a bit of a mystery, he was married and had lived there for some years. However, in 1980, I spent about four months travelling on a container ship as supernumerary crew - I was supposed to be the purser, but apart from doing some accounts and drafting the crews pay, lived in the Owners Suite (no wages, free accommodation) my Father’s quarters were the Captain’s suite next to mine. Anyway, I visited a lot of Fat East countries, Manilla was my favourite, but the first time we visited Hong Kong was where I came unstuck. I was wondering around myself one night, when I came across a bar in Kowloon called ‘Bottoms Up’. . This was only about four weeks in, so I was pretty used to drinking very cheaply or on board ship, 9had a fridge in my quarters (the Captains Steward looked after me as well as my Dad). Anyway, drinks in most ports weren’t dead expensive, so I never carried it lot of cash with me. In the bar, I didn’t expect to pay more than 4our or five HLdollars for a bottle of San Miguel, so sat down at a round bar - nearly naked Chinese barmaids. So far, so good. I even asked what Ithe beers would cost (slightly more than the usual, but wow! A lot of eye candy), then these two beautiful girls st next to me. Started chatting ‘was I Mexican? No, English. They love English men, well why not, it was still a sort of colonŷ, aback then. Would I buy them drinks? I wasn’t sure what they meant - anything like wine or cocktails were usually pretty dear, so I explained this, oh nooo, not alcohol drinks they ‘soff drinks for ladies’. so, alright had too 6be even. cheaper than beer, I thought. Well it was the case in my experience. Three San Miguel’s and six ladies drinks later, I decided to look elsewhere, and was presented with a bar chit for 3 lagers HK$18. Fine but 6 ladies drinks HK180!. I argued that this wasn’t possible - suddenly all these unsmiling Chines men appeared, all friendliness Evaporated 9 and I was taken to a side room. They eventually let me go when I paid all the cash they coul find on me - about HK145.00. I really didn’t have any more on me. However, I did have more at the Mariner’s club Where I was staying. I went out again and slipped into a bar run by an ex-pat English chap - they even gave a free Sab Mig, everyone had aged laugh about it - happens all the time, r hey sad, but I found it sinister that I was lucky to convince them I was English. Apparently, it would have been different had they thought I was American. In what manner, I wasn’t even told, however I had the impression that it wouldn’t have been pleases

Some really good tips here. I used Bolt a few weeks ago and it makes getting around so much easier and you don't have to struggle to explain to the driver where you want to go. However, they will often ring and ask (as the app doesn't inform them of the destination). I always rent the same bike from the same person so its not an issue and I even bring my own helmet now. Scanners on ATMs is still a thing. My local bank locked my card after they were alerted that not only the chip on my card was being read but also the metal strip.

Even in America I check for scanners, it's the age of the computers and electronic scams because of technology advancing plus I am very experiencedi n computers and will sometime research scams to sew how people pull the scams. If it's an ATM I always pull on it, but only ATMs and something where you have to leave your card in for more than a few small seconds, that's where scanners are the most

I had the taxi-eperience in January too. From Central Festival a driver offered me to bring me back to Unixx Condo for only 300 baht. I start laughing and he told me 200 baht. I used bolt to order a taxi and told the driver to pick me up in front of the taxi. The ride only costs 60 baht :)
It looks like another problem can be if you rent a motorbike and someone steal it. You have to pay. No insurance pay for you.
I know the jetski scam only because many hotels at beachroad are warning not to rent a jetski from anyone at the beach. If we want to rent a jetski we have to go to reception, they can do that for us. But we never did that.

    Hey Amigo,
Great video. I like your positive attitude. For all the crappy stuff that could happen in Thailand, the good times always outweigh the bad by a wide margin for me. Appreciate all you shared. I miss Thailand!
You asked we share a personal experience that was, perhaps, less than favorable. So i will…
I was into my first night of my first visit to Pattaya. Waiting for others to join the next day, I spent the evening walking up and down Pattaya Walking Street (while smoking a nicotine vape pen). I don’t smoke pot nor would I, even if pot was something I enjoyed… ESPECIALLY in Thailand! I’ve seen the movie Return to Paradise!
Anyway, I found myself subject to being grabbed by the forearm and, pretty forcibly, pulled by some older fella who was no more than 5 feet tall. It was around 10pm and i was a few drinks in (not drunk), but responded with laughter, while proclaiming, WTF!!! However, my tone quickly softened when I realized he was wearing a uniform (at which point, I did not make a fuss and willingly followed). What the hell did I do, I asked myself.
Ultimately, I was brought to a booth that was about a blocks-worth away where I was introduced to another lawman in uniform. He informed me that I was being detained because of the Vaping. I did not know it at the time, but he let me know that vaping is illegal and I could be thrown into a Thai prison for the act (and while he was explaining this, he was grazing the vape pen close to his nose to determine its contents). But regardless of my belief that i was convincing him of my ignorance of the law and contents of my vape pen, I was legitimately concerned.
I continued pleading my case. Still … he continued to threaten imprisonment. FUUUUUUCK!
It was at this time I came to my senses and remembered to offer some cash in exchange for my freedom. And with that, the threat of imprisonment vanished from dialogue.
And with the nod of his head and the gesture of his eyes toward the table, informing me that I had perhaps secured my freedom, I happily reached into my pocket for some baht.
*** as a sidenote, whenever I am traveling within Thailand, I typically keep money in three different places on my body (in small, medium and large amounts). This is something I came up with to avoid flashing too much money in front of anyone, whether it be a thirsty bar-lady and all of her thirsty bar-lady friends … or an officer of the law, seeking a philanthropic donation to the Thai Police Benevolence Association)***
Somehow, I had the wherewithal at that moment to reach into the pocket with the smallest amount of cash and pulled everything I had out of it , INCLUDING THE ACTUAL POCKET (just to reinforce the fact that he was “taking my last cent” …about 300-400 baht).
In the end, I’ve been shaking down every single time I have visited (I always forget the helmet)!!
This time though, I could have been really F’ed if the cop decided that this would not be my night.
I still love Thailand. I’m also grateful to the officer for being reasonable. The actual fine for my infraction could have been 30,000 Baht.

First trip to Pattaya was in 2007, but a friend and myself stayed in Jomtien (no idea why) and had to do that dreaded baht bus trip to Pattaya every night. We would negotiate with the baht bus driver before the trip "how much to Pattaya?" and he would quote us 200 baht and us, thinking we are such incredible world travelers, would get him down to 100 baht and thought we were awesome. It wasn't until the 3rd or 4th time, a French guy who was already in the back told us to just jump on and pay 10baht at the end. What a couple of assclowns 5555

It's closer to home that you are more likely to get ripped off such as Hamburg's Reeperbahn or Amsterdam. But yes, riding jet skis and motorbikes should be avoided
