I've lived in Thailand for the past 11 years and this is all very good advice for new tourists. I'd also add bring some masks as there is still a mask mandate. In the past few days I've seen loads of tourists walking around maskless. Obviously I hate wearing them but the cops might have something diff to say, as will many Thais if you try to get into a taxi, restaurant, shopping mall, etc. Just be prepared with a mask.

Last time ( pre covid) I was in Thailand it was very easy to get a SIM card at Bangkok airport, even late at night. At the airport they set it up for you and it always worked perfectly for us after that. We always did that on every trip. So we were ready to go from the airport. There are desks at the airport for the local mobile providers. Sure these international eSims are convenient but be careful of the rates compared with local sims in Thailand. It may be different in other Asian countries.
I wish I'd known about E-Sims in Feb when I went to Thailand, I would have saved a full half day getting my phone sorted out. Street food, OMG, sooo good.
You are right. Politeness in Thai language speaking is about the speaker, and not the interlocutor. If the speaker is a guy, then he ends his sentences with "krub". A female speaker ends her sentences with "ka". 😉
This is different from English. In English, you add "Sir" at the end of your sentences if your interlocutor is a guy, and "Ma'am" or "Miss" if your interlocutor is a woman.
For politeness when saying 'thank you' (cob Khun ca/krup) I often use 'na' .... 'cob Khun na krup' is especially polite (if someone did something especially nice or went out of their way to help you) and 'na krup' for a short form of 'cob Khun cup'. I usually use that at the cash register when they give me my change/receipt.
Been to Thailand about 20 times and always get a local sim,easy and cheap and we only take cash to avoid any fees. We download the offline maps before we leave then after we check inn we go to a shopping centre and buy a sim for me and the wife that will last the trip and more. They set it all up for you.
About withdrawing money in Thai, I watched another TH-camr (dont remember which one though) said that he got cash by going inside a Bank to teller and use his card on a machine there and the Bank gave him cash with no fee charged. Something like this. Im not sure how it works.
1 use google translater to communicate with the local 2. Try non spicy Thai food like Pad See Ew, Thai fried rice or Rad na 3. Thai temple can help for emergencies 4. Just only ride the taxi with meter 5. Try Thai Mine-Smart Ferry the air conditioning ferry
use google translate as a last resort - learn basic Thai via YouTub- it’s not that hard and should only take a few hours (how many hours do you spend watching trash tv ;p ) the locals will appreciate it and you have less chance of being scammed. please don’t write off spicy street food- it will make you feel alive?! What’s the point of travelling if you are play the apps and eat the same food you can eat back home :) agree with your others points - please don’t ever step foot inside a taxi unless they use meter. Be assertive. Oh and Bolt is much cheaper than grab as mentioned in the vid. 🙏🤙✌️

Been studying since January, but with 5 tones it’s a bit tricky. Here are a few helpful phrases you might use….When greeting someone - Sa wat dii (kha for women)(krup for men) so Mandy: Sawatdii Kha, with hands clasped together in front of your chest and a little nod (its called a waI) Lloyd: Sawatdii Krup. If you need to apologize it’s Khot thot (kha or krup) can’t wait to hear and see more about your trip. Thanks so much.
Jen, you win my heart by determination and dedication to learn Thai. A small tip, to speak Thai infact it is pretty easy-going. MAI = no. If you don’t want anything, either things, actions, directions anything, just put MAI in front of the word or verb. Same thing as NO. AO = take/want If you want anything just put AO in front of things or amount you want. Such as you want 1 roti you say “Ao Nung (1) ka”. Same thing as “Want one (of these)”.

Some useful tips there. Than you. A couple of cultural things you should know/consider. 1. Don’t use your left hand for ANYTHING when it comes to giving/receiving money/food/bus ticket,…, you name it. 2. Don’t touch people on the head. 3. Don’t put your feet up or pointing at someone. For example, in a temple fold your feet backwards so that it is not pointing towards the Buddha. 4. Generally speaking, only say “thank you” for important occasions. No need when buying a train ticket or when you get your meal. A simple nod of the head is enough. Observe the locals. Saying “thank you” is like saying “I greatly appreciate the honor in which you are making for me” or something like that. Imagine in Australia you buy a meat pie and you say what I just said. A bit weird, right? Have fun traveling and enjoy life! 🙏🏽

Only a bowl of water. Which hand do you think you are going to use to clean your ass? Now, do this with your left index finger and you will probably end up in jail.

Sometimes you will see them place their left palm under their right elbow when accepting something of "value" from you. This is a sign of them being very grateful and respectful. So, when this happens and you have given them something using your left hand (which is used to wipe your you know what), it shows that you have no understanding of the gesture that they are showing you.
Paper products! Many restrooms do not have toilet paper or paper towels. Toilets can be an elevated hole in the ground and many have no sink to wash your hands or soap. Bring travel tissue and sanitizing wipes wherever you go - it takes little room in your backpack and you'll be happy you have it. Also get as many massages as you can! They cost about 200 - 300 baht (about $6 - $8 USD) and they're awesome. Be respectful of their religion and when visiting temples cover your shoulders and knees.

You are right it's gone seriously downhill since we were young and at best you had a Lonely Planet guide. It's REALLY gone downhill in the last decade or so with the rise of Influencers and Vloggers and the sheep they attract. My pet LOL are the "Thailands Best Kept Secret' vlogs, usually featuring some island that isn't Phuket or Samui and therefore slightly less populated. All that GenZ naivity like they are the first to ever set foot there. They are even more embarassing than this video. I went in July 2021 (again) for 8 months during Covid. The entire country was practically devoid of tourism. We travelled to every island and several other places - had Chaweng Beach and Lamai practically to ourselves. Met some great 'real' travellers, did some brilliant cycling and diving etc. It was like being back in the 80s almost 🙏
All you are doing is acknowledging you understand what is being said. If you do this when the Thai speaker knows you don't really understand they will not respect you for it, believe me.
220 THB is what the local bank will charge you. Home bank will also charge you a conversion fee, so the total comes out to $17USD per ATM withdraw. I prefer ATM than bringing a wad of cash. The easy solution is opening a Charles Schwab account and get the fees reimbursed. SIM card was no issue and you'll be ok to take a few minutes and get done at the airport. My only regret is not downloading a transport app prior to travel. Even with a SIM card, you don't get those notifications via text to continue creating a account.

Only newer phones are compatible with an E Sim card. For curiosity I compared the rates on the website you mentioned compared to buying a card in the airport in Bangkok and buying an actual card in the airport is still cheaper

I buy beer at a supermarket, not 7-11, during the day time, drop off your laundry in the morning and pick it up next day at any laundry shop, they iron, fold and pack it up for easy carry, acceptable costs.
Yes only to apply for the Thai pass which is mandatory right now. They need 1. Scan/pic of Passport 2. Full vaccination certificate and it's QR code (just screenshot and crop from the certificate) OR tests of not vaccinated 3. Medical insurance that covers $10000 (the Thai pass website suggests a few Thai companies, but you can buy from any which covers the requirements). 4. One hotel booking confirmation. Just one day confirmed booking is fine. Everything is written in details and clearly on their website. And mine was processed within 2 hours, I was stressing about the insurance initially because one of them has a 14 day waiting time OR present rcptr test which i don't want to. But I bought mine from MSIG Thai insurance company and it was instant. Hope this helped.

I take less than 10.000 dollars with me, open a bank account when I arrive in Thailand, get a bank card. Never use an ATM as it can eat your credit card, bank card and leave you without a bank card. Go to a bank, do an over the counter cash withdrawal on your credit card or bank card as you won't lose your card. Lose your card once in an ATM is more than enough to learn not to use them in a foreign country. It happened once in Greece, I had to go back to France as the card had to be sent to an actual home address, not a hotel room or anywhere else. Not something you want to experience. I like independent cash options, no fees, no troubles, no issues. Don't keep 10,000 baht notes, change them at the bank for 1000 baht notes so you can't lose cash by handing out a large note and getting change for a 1000 baht note. Taxis and such don't usually have the cash to handle the bigger notes.
Thankfully I live in the US and love my phone service. $65 USD for 50GB 5G data around the world through Google FI. The drinking rule shocked me as well. Though you can but anytime at night.

They don't allow alcohol sales from 2 to 5pm as that is the time when school kids get out from school. It is to discourage underage drinking and businesses from selling to minors. I say works for me.

Yes well you people are sort of correct, on the right track I’m an Aussie lived in Lao for years and Thailand The public transport system runs rings around anything in Australia,( we in Australia are 3rd world by comparison) and bloody expensive by comparison. Food as you have mentioned the street food yes it’s brilliant fresh every day or evening when the open, what’s left over gets thrown out I have been ill once from food in Thailand and it was from a Korean restaurant in Bangkok NOT Thai food If you can speak a little Thai it’s great , but not essential English is taught in schools so 95% of Thai people can speak some English The taxi hire thing , don’t use tuk tuk they rip you off. Not even my Thai wife will use tuk tuk Use a metered taxi or negotiate a price if going a long distance. But you must know where your going distance and roughly cost before negotiating Your hotel can often recommend a service that is cheaper than anything else , and they can book it for you . The phone thing you mentioned is really good even though I live in Thailand and travel to Australia often I wasn’t away of it but it’s annoying not have service on arrival in Bangkok, especially if you have to meet your wife in Bangkok airport it’s bloody big Please for everyone reading be polite to the Thai people it’s very important, if you are polite the local people will do anything to help you, but if your nasty or aggressive expect to be visited by police or even a visit to hospital And gents treat the women with respect

Dear guys, if you visit the Philippines, go to the island called siquijor. It is beautiful and mostly free of tourists. You can rent an scooter to travel the whole island.
There are several Thai holidays where alcohol sales are restricted if not banned completely. The dates of which vary slightly from year to year, but in 2022 the dates were or are, Makha Bucha Day (16th Feb), Visakha Bucha Day (15th May) Asarnha Bucha Day (13th July) and Wan Khao Phansa (14th July). I have also experienced restrictions, on voting days and Mother's day which also celebrates the current Queen Mother's birthday (12th August) and if it falls on a weekend, the holiday carries over onto the following Monday, so stock up early.

About the holidays - if they fall on a weekend, the day off is on the next Monday rather than making it a 3-day holiday. Also sometimes shops stop selling alcohol out of respect rather than because of the law. I don’t believe it’s actually illegal to sell alcohol on the King’s birthday for example but most shops won’t. Restrictions the evening before voting do seem especially ridiculous, as if they think everyone will get drunk and vote for the wrong people.

use google translate as a last resort - learn basic Thai via YouTub- it’s not that hard and should only take a few hours (how many hours do you spend watching trash tv ;p ) the locals will appreciate it and you have less chance of being scammed. please don’t write off spicy street food- it will make you feel alive?! What’s the point of travelling if you are play the apps and eat the same food you can eat back home :) agree with your others points - please don’t ever step foot inside a taxi unless they use meter. Be assertive. Oh and Bolt is much cheaper than grab as mentioned in the vid. 🙏🤙✌️

Been studying since January, but with 5 tones it’s a bit tricky. Here are a few helpful phrases you might use….When greeting someone - Sa wat dii (kha for women)(krup for men) so Mandy: Sawatdii Kha, with hands clasped together in front of your chest and a little nod (its called a waI) Lloyd: Sawatdii Krup. If you need to apologize it’s Khot thot (kha or krup) can’t wait to hear and see more about your trip. Thanks so much.

A small tip, to speak Thai infact it is pretty easy-going.
MAI = no.
If you don’t want anything, either things, actions, directions anything, just put MAI in front of the word or verb. Same thing as NO.
AO = take/want
If you want anything just put AO in front of things or amount you want. Such as you want 1 roti you say “Ao Nung (1) ka”. Same thing as “Want one (of these)”.

Some useful tips there. Than you. A couple of cultural things you should know/consider.
1. Don’t use your left hand for ANYTHING when it comes to giving/receiving money/food/bus ticket,…, you name it.
2. Don’t touch people on the head.
3. Don’t put your feet up or pointing at someone. For example, in a temple fold your feet backwards so that it is not pointing towards the Buddha.
4. Generally speaking, only say “thank you” for important occasions. No need when buying a train ticket or when you get your meal. A simple nod of the head is enough. Observe the locals. Saying “thank you” is like saying “I greatly appreciate the honor in which you are making for me” or something like that. Imagine in Australia you buy a meat pie and you say what I just said. A bit weird, right?

Only a bowl of water. Which hand do you think you are going to use to clean your ass? Next time you are at a place with a lot of locals around and there is a picture of the Thai kind, point your RIGHT index finger at him. You are very likely to get into a fair amount of trouble. Now, do this with your left index finger and you will probably end up in jail.
some things are so obvious common sense that they should not need to be mentioned, like touching people's heads or putting your feet up / pointing.

@@valerieearlam2172 Thais are pretty much OK with foreigners doing it. Even they do it out of laziness.
Sometimes you will see them place their left palm under their right elbow when accepting something of "value" from you. This is a sign of them being very grateful and respectful.
So, when this happens and you have given them something using your left hand (which is used to wipe your you know what), it shows that you have no understanding of the gesture that they are showing you.
Paper products! Many restrooms do not have toilet paper or paper towels. Toilets can be an elevated hole in the ground and many have no sink to wash your hands or soap. Bring travel tissue and sanitizing wipes wherever you go - it takes little room in your backpack and you'll be happy you have it. Also get as many massages as you can! They cost about 200 - 300 baht (about $6 - $8 USD) and they're awesome. Be respectful of their religion and when visiting temples cover your shoulders and knees.

You are right it's gone seriously downhill since we were young and at best you had a Lonely Planet guide. It's REALLY gone downhill in the last decade or so with the rise of Influencers and Vloggers and the sheep they attract. My pet LOL are the "Thailands Best Kept Secret' vlogs, usually featuring some island that isn't Phuket or Samui and therefore slightly less populated. All that GenZ naivity like they are the first to ever set foot there. They are even more embarassing than this video.
I went in July 2021 (again) for 8 months during Covid. The entire country was practically devoid of tourism. We travelled to every island and several other places - had Chaweng Beach and Lamai practically to ourselves. Met some great 'real' travellers, did some brilliant cycling and diving etc. It was like being back in the 80s almost 🙏

I found saying Khrap ( or Kah if you're female) )all the time during a conversation is super polite and the Thai's will respect you for this.
All you are doing is acknowledging you understand what is being said. If you do this when the Thai speaker knows you don't really understand they will not respect you for it, believe me.
220 THB is what the local bank will charge you. Home bank will also charge you a conversion fee, so the total comes out to $17USD per ATM withdraw. I prefer ATM than bringing a wad of cash. The easy solution is opening a Charles Schwab account and get the fees reimbursed. SIM card was no issue and you'll be ok to take a few minutes and get done at the airport. My only regret is not downloading a transport app prior to travel. Even with a SIM card, you don't get those notifications via text to continue creating a account.

Only newer phones are compatible with an E Sim card. For curiosity I compared the rates on the website you mentioned compared to buying a card in the airport in Bangkok and buying an actual card in the airport is still cheaper

I buy beer at a supermarket, not 7-11, during the day time, drop off your laundry in the morning and pick it up next day at any laundry shop, they iron, fold and pack it up for easy carry, acceptable costs.

Do you need the travel insurance for Thailand? I've asked 5 people, all day they dint even check for it at the airport
Yes only to apply for the Thai pass which is mandatory right now. They need
1. Scan/pic of Passport
2. Full vaccination certificate and it's QR code (just screenshot and crop from the certificate) OR tests of not vaccinated
3. Medical insurance that covers $10000 (the Thai pass website suggests a few Thai companies, but you can buy from any which covers the requirements).
4. One hotel booking confirmation. Just one day confirmed booking is fine.
Everything is written in details and clearly on their website. And mine was processed within 2 hours, I was stressing about the insurance initially because one of them has a 14 day waiting time OR present rcptr test which i don't want to. But I bought mine from MSIG Thai insurance company and it was instant.

Easier to prebuy cash before leaving home
I take less than 10.000 dollars with me, open a bank account when I arrive in Thailand, get a bank card. Never use an ATM as it can eat your credit card, bank card and leave you without a bank card. Go to a bank, do an over the counter cash withdrawal on your credit card or bank card as you won't lose your card. Lose your card once in an ATM is more than enough to learn not to use them in a foreign country. It happened once in Greece, I had to go back to France as the card had to be sent to an actual home address, not a hotel room or anywhere else. Not something you want to experience. I like independent cash options, no fees, no troubles, no issues. Don't keep 10,000 baht notes, change them at the bank for 1000 baht notes so you can't lose cash by handing out a large note and getting change for a 1000 baht note. Taxis and such don't usually have the cash to handle the bigger notes.

Crazy youtube. This was in my recommended feed. The alcohol laws. I actually just learned this from another vlog just tonight. They don't allow alcohol sales from 2 to 5pm as that is the time when school kids get out from school. It is to discourage underage drinking and businesses from selling to minors. I say works for me.

Atm fees is normal for international it normally charge more so between withdraw a lot at once or do exchanges money before coming.
Is it the same fee regardless of how much you withdraw? Or does the fee increase with the amount you withdraw?

The public transport system runs rings around anything in Australia,( we in Australia are 3rd world by comparison) and bloody expensive by comparison.
Food as you have mentioned the street food yes it’s brilliant fresh every day or evening when the open, what’s left over gets thrown out
I have been ill once from food in Thailand and it was from a Korean restaurant in Bangkok NOT Thai food
If you can speak a little Thai it’s great , but not essential English is taught in schools so 95% of Thai people can speak some English
The taxi hire thing , don’t use tuk tuk they rip you off. Not even my Thai wife will use tuk tuk
Use a metered taxi or negotiate a price if going a long distance.
But you must know where your going distance and roughly cost before negotiating
Your hotel can often recommend a service that is cheaper than anything else , and they can book it for you .
The phone thing you mentioned is really good even though I live in Thailand and travel to Australia often I wasn’t away of it but it’s annoying not have service on arrival in Bangkok, especially if you have to meet your wife in Bangkok airport it’s bloody big
Please for everyone reading be polite to the Thai people it’s very important, if you are polite the local people will do anything to help you, but if your nasty or aggressive expect to be visited by police or even a visit to hospital

There are several Thai holidays where alcohol sales are restricted if not banned completely. The dates of which vary slightly from year to year, but in 2022 the dates were or are, Makha Bucha Day (16th Feb), Visakha Bucha Day (15th May) Asarnha Bucha Day (13th July) and Wan Khao Phansa (14th July). I have also experienced restrictions, on voting days and Mother's day which also celebrates the current Queen Mother's birthday (12th August) and if it falls on a weekend, the holiday carries over onto the following Monday, so stock up early.
Unless you’re a raging alcoholic I don’t see the need to ‘stock up’. Can you not go one day without drinking?

About the holidays - if they fall on a weekend, the day off is on the next Monday rather than making it a 3-day holiday. Also sometimes shops stop selling alcohol out of respect rather than because of the law. I don’t believe it’s actually illegal to sell alcohol on the King’s birthday for example but most shops won’t. Restrictions the evening before voting do seem especially ridiculous, as if they think everyone will get drunk and vote for the wrong people.

In a lot of languages there’s masculine and feminine. Spanish is one. A way to say nice to meet you is in English enchanted. That translates to masculine encantado, or encantada for feminine.

Just like trying to speak Thai. Thailand is probably the only country in the world where you can try to speak Thai and you won't be laughed at. On the other hand you will get smiles and admiration as you try to speak our language with pleasure. And In short sentences, if you speak with a clear or close accent. You will get compliments from Thai people in Thai .KENG MAK. , it means you are very good with thumbs up.👍 So for here you don't have to worry about trying to speak Thai.
In regard to the law limiting the time to sell alcohol. The reason comes from trying to reduce the risk that people drink at that time and drive.
Due to past car accident data, it was found that most of the causes were alcohol and drunk driving.
