Update* This won't pass inspection! Ultimate Adventure is wild and for the folks in charge, safety is paramount. They want to see a lot more structure than I have here so there needs to be a part 2 to this story. The good news is when I get back into the USA my buddy Dave Chappelle is going to help me cobble together a roll cage just in time for UA 2022. When they said a simple 4 point cage I was thinking race car and of course they were wanting more. Not a big deal. Now that we have most of the truck back together I'm hoping Dave and I can knock it out in half a day. This will be down to the wire but with them being so particular about cages I think this year's UA is going to be crazy!!! They wouldn't enforce these guidelines if they didn't think I needed it. I hope you enjoy the video! See you soon!
I don't think you have to worry. I have been watching dirt everyday for a long time and Mr Chappelle's show. He's a master fabricator. He's got your back and he's been thru the ua before. Yall have this
Not sure if you're aware, you can turn off the side curtains airbags so you don't have to worry about them going off in off-road situations. Even if you don't hit anything, extreme angles can set them off. The panel to the left of the steering wheel. Press and hold the RSCA OFF button.
Dude I can't wait to see you on UA. Don't recall the last time I saw an IFS truck on there and I'm really looking forward to seeing how this truck hangs with some of the crazy builds that they get out there.
If you had more time a exo-cage might have been the better option for keeping the interior clean. 🙃Be careful around Dave you might walk away from your coilovers and come back to airbags. 🤣🤣
Not to mention that interior cages are very dangerous unless paired with an appropriate helmet. The chances of TBI go up exponentially even in the most minor of collisions or impacts.
Exo cages are literally for looks they do nothing in an actual roll over not to mention how much more they way. Hybrid would be a good option to keep head room but do yourself a favor and look at Exo cages in actual roll over scenarios they generally just fold.
Found this channel through the story till now, love both but I love the combination of driving videos and building. I find building to be as or more entertaining. I really enjoy the process of building and then seeing how that translates to the real world.
We just had a tragic death up in Crandon, Wisconsin at the Amsoil Cup last weekend. Roll cages can help in minor situations, however they can provide a false sense of security leading up to more dangerous driving. No roll cage will reduce g forces in an impact. I would say roll cages actually make the shock forces worse resisting the energy dissipation strategies designed into a modern vehicle. Your body and especially your head and neck can only withstand so much and I would say its far less than people realize, life is fragile, your mind is your number one safety device. Be safe friend.
Very true esp in high speed applications. I try to design in crumple zones into my cages. My front ends especially are designed to bend. Obviously within the required structural parameters designated by tech.
Not gunna lie, I was hoping for an exo-cage so you could really get after it. Congratulations on getting the invite to UA. I’ve met some people in the magazine world, and know that it is very difficult to get the invite.
Nate, you should check out the progressive rate Boogie Bumps offered by Thuren for Ram 2500s. They bolt on simple with 2 bolts, and with your mad skills I'm sure you could fabricate mounting brackets that would work for your truck. Timbrens are really load helpers, whereas the Boogie Bumps are purpose built to progressively slow the axle in the last few inches, not unlike mechanical bump stops.
When we bend conduit and want to keep it square with multiple bends, we strut strap a short piece of strut on the end and level it. As you feed it into the bender make sure it stays level and all your bends will be clocked correctly. As far as a roll cage that won't interfere with the airbags could you build an exoskeleton with those couplings and make it removable? It would keep the inside nice and could be made removable for resale.
Great tip on leveling conduit. I worked at Coors at the main brewery complex for many years. Our in house construction electricians were absolute masters at bending rigid conduit. I had always told myself when I’m ready to build a cage I’m going to beg one of them to come help me.
Something that may help keep the pipe from getting a twist or a "dog" as electricians call it is getting a no dog you level your pipe and the no dog screws down on the end of the pipe and when you move or turn it just make sure the bubble is level and bend. Klein makes a good one and Milwaukee is ok too just stay away from southwire. Great build man
Been watching your videos, and I have a tube bender that is vertical instead of horizontal like yours. I think this should work. I madea level stand on wheels that I can adjust, so when you need a level plan I would set the bend and then adjust the stand to level. Works great.
I commented on @Dirtheadshed’s first video hoping that you two could do some collaboration. I’m very excited to see what you come up with and congratulations on getting selected for UA!
Dude, you're getting the dirthead himself to help you build a cage? i SOOO HOPE thats going to make it on video. What a cool opportunity. Truck looks awesome. Cool build man, hope you have (or.. had?) a safe time overseas. cant wait to see your trip to UA.
There is a tool you should look into. It’s used for doing conduit and clamps onto the end of the pipe or tube you are working on. In the industry we refer to them as a no dog and you can find them by that if you google it. The simple units only have a single level in them but there are digital models and multilevel units as well.
Out of curiosity when measuring drive line angles. Wouldn't the presence of a Carrier bearing negate the angle of the of the transfer case output shaft? Would you not want your differential yoke to align with the yoke on the Carrier bearing?
Nate. Why did you leave the original drum brakes on the Taco' rear axle ? Here Downunder is offered several disc brake upgrades for the rear end of Toyota Hilux/Tacoma's mista ! V.
On the hydro bumps, why can’t you just change out the Delrin consumable with a softer hard rubber compound to dampen the tap noise and make the contact less sharp? Just an idea, it would be soft and quiet like having both a rubber bump and an air/hydro bump.
Someone was stuck on plumber's math with 22.5°. Sucks about the cage, but it sounds like you have a plan. For the driveshaft and the low pinion of the 9", did you consider a double cardan joint at the front of the second piece of the shaft that goes down to the axle? This way you could point the pinion up at the carrier bearing instead of just matching the angle of it. I think you said something about running a guard, but using a double cardan allows the pinion to point up and out of the way.
Nate, another great video as always. In your build I noticed you let the drum brakes on your rig, do you prefer drum brakes over disc brakes, is there a disc brake conversion in the future? I appreciate the lesson in axle installation as well. Thanks, David
Cutest mini cage ever! I cant believe it didn't pass. On another note, your film work/cinematography is off the hook these days. Iceland video was amazing.
Oh man. I live between you and Dave and if you need any hand with transport or help with the cage I will take time off work to help you make sure it gets done before UA. Can’t have a cage holding you back
May I recommend since you promote the recovery gear a lot and it's good stuff. That you get a second set to carry in each truck so that when Edward Shin falls off the side of the road again you'll have everything. LOL or you could just get a recovery box that you move from truck to truck
Hey Nate, I have a solid axel swapped 93 bronco with a Dana 44 HD out of a 79 f250 in the front and a sterling 10.25 in the back. I’ve recently had the opportunity to get my bronco on some decent trails for the first time. And I quickly realized that my leaf sprung front axel was limiting me greatly. I’m planning on swapping in a radius arm Dana 44 out of a 79 bronco at the moment. However I’m thinking about simply converting my Dana 44 hd to tube radius arms. And coil spring front suspension instead. I’m 19 and in college so budget is definitely a limiting factor but looking for some advice.
Been down that road and I would suggest not doing that and saving for a D60. cheaper in the long run as you just cant keep u-joints and shafts in the 44 with any larger than 37" tires. Even after cromo shafts and yukon u-joints they are still not up to the task. I made this mistake with an early bronco (same axle but narrow). Also the ford radius arms don't flex well at all and are prone to axle wrap issues, especially once you replace the "C" bushings, all aftermarket ones are stiff (yes you can do the "wristed" thing but you are just masking an inherent problem). I would do some shackle work to make what you have work decent till you can 3 or 4 link it with a 60. Packaging is much easier with coilovers or air shocks.
I have to say out of all the off-road fabricators I watch on TH-cam you are the only one that I don’t cringe when they weld.. A lot of it comes from you prep your surfaces before you weld which is so important. Your starts alway sound right for the most part.
It's so close to your head if the seat breaks, and you're still squished. Theirs probably a max of distance from the tube to the door and your exceeding it....an exo-hoops over the back and front mounted off the rock sliders would have served you better. Stock interior, and removable, and will protect the body
He explained in the last video, enough power and still pretty much brand new. Hell replace them when they're worn and the new axle has the right mounts to make it easy
The fact that you keep saying you are planning to sell this beast is just blowing my mind.. like how are you going to create a custom rig to do everything and then sell it? But I am getting ready to build a shop so I can start working on my rig and my soon to have overland rig for my wife so I'm definitely going to go back and see how to do all what you're doing on this so I have an idea of what I need to learn how to do.. I know first thing to learn is welding.. luckily I have a uncle who is a fabricator and a brother who is a great welder for nuclear items that are x-rayed before completion.
I think you should raffle the Taco off, I think you could make a huge profit off that and it'll go to someone that really wants it all will appreciate the truck
Another killer video, Nate! Really does change things by having a camera man. The shots are way more dynamic and you right, makes filming much easier haha. Can’t wait to see your videos from Europe and to see UA!
I live in your neighborhood and if I didn't work so much I would love to sling the camera for you. Having Dave help out when your back is going to be a huge help. Can't wait for the next episode.
@@jeremyspecce Why not, for a roll cage, the beefier the safer, ive watched most of his adventures and the way they rock climb those steep angles, I would say its good to have a bigger pipe diameter.

I dont think you can find better help than Dave to fab up a cage. Cant wait to see the footage from UA.
Well, that's a bonus for us. You and Dave will make for some great content.
That's awesome you're getting to go on UA and work with Dave. How did you get invited to UA, are you a sponsor rig?
It also looked like your roll bar was too narrow. Usually tech inspection wants it farther out than your body.

Neck brace and helmet with seat harnesses are a must for anyone pushing the limits
Ya, when you have a stout cage you need a good seat to absorb the energy. 5 point harness.
The body can only take 45,000 G for split second
I’ve heard of people putting weedeating twine in brake line to keep them from kinking closed
off topic: Front view camera ? Bicycle Rear View camera. cheap, temp mounting just for rocks.
Problem: bicycle round tube mounting provided

Nate. Why did you leave the original drum brakes on the Taco' rear axle ? Here Downunder is offered several disc brake upgrades for the rear end of Toyota Hilux/Tacoma's mista ! V.
What's the reason behind drum rear brakes? I figured discs were the commonplace.
On the hydro bumps, why can’t you just change out the Delrin consumable with a softer hard rubber compound to dampen the tap noise and make the contact less sharp? Just an idea, it would be soft and quiet like having both a rubber bump and an air/hydro bump.
Too much force on it for such a small rubber piece, so it needs to be pretty solid. Shouldn't be hitting bumps that much anyways with proper uptravel
Someone was stuck on plumber's math with 22.5°. Sucks about the cage, but it sounds like you have a plan.

Yup, this is the way. Buddy runs this same setup has gobs more clearance compaired to a level pinion/single joints
Make your life easier, NiCopp brake line. Much better material, bends and flares easily and is corrosion resistant.

Have you ever seen or used Daystar Stinger bumps? Apparently I might be the only one who knows about them lol
Why not use a diamond housing and use a tundra rear chunk?
Way less common, and a 9" is plenty strong for what the computer will let the truck do.
Re Filming.... Check out 'Cutting Edge Engineering' and the way they film.. TTFN
