More Hemingway history: He would mix up a daiquiri at home before driving into Havana at the Floridita. He made it large enough so he wouldn't run out until he got inside the bar.
Great writer, absolute garbage human being. Not 100% his fault though as he had suffered from psychosis as early as the late 40's due to family history and several traumatic brain injuries. So I kinda give him a pass. Poor bastard, even his demons had demons.

This is an all time favourite and takes me back to my travel days in Cuba. Your videos have brought more joy and knowledge to my days than you can imagine. Thank you, sir. Cheers from Brazil.
Can’t believe I’ve never had a Hemingway Daiquiri despite loving rum, spending some summers in Key West (visiting the Hemingway house of course), and almost always having the ingredients! I’ll have to make one soon. Also, Jeff Berry’s “Potions of the Caribbean” has tons of great information on La Floridita, Constantine Ribalaigua Vert (it’s legendary bartender), Hemingway, and the various daiquiri versions served there. Excellent read for those who want to dive deep into Caribbean cocktail culture.
One of my favorite Hemingway cocktails is the Green Isaac's Special, which features in his posthumously published book Islands in the Stream. It's a great, refreshing, non-carbonated summer highball: • 2 oz Gin • 1 oz Lime Juice • 4 oz Coconut Water • 5-10 dashes Angostura Bitters (enough to turn it a rusty rose color)
!t's a sign! my husband just asked what i wanted for tonight's cocktail, and it's been so hot here today (100F), and we don't have air conditioning, so i've been craving something with a lot of ice. i said, "...Dobles?" and so that's what we were planning to have after dinner. I sat down to eat, and said, "hey, it's friday -- let's see what Anders recommends!" and just like that, it was clear. Great Minds!
Wondering if you would ever do a video on pre making cocktails to keep in the fridge. I have sangria, mojitos and Caesars currently pre-made but I'm wondering how long they will last and if there are other drinks that I can pre-make for the summer.
The Hemingway is the cocktail I probably make more than any other at home. I use the recipe from The Office cocktail book which is heavier on the citrus juice but we still love it. 2 oz light rum (Plantation 3 Star) .75 lime juice 1 oz grapefruit juice .25 oz rich (2:1) simple .25 oz maraschino
I ate dinner at a Cuban restaurant last week that seemed to have a riff on the Hemingway: Aperol instead of grapefruit juice! It was quite delicious. So at home I’ve used your recipe but subbed both Campari and Averna (in separate drinks!). Both were really good with interesting flavor profiles and colors. I’d recommend to anyone to try this with your favorite Amaro.
First try, made it per Anders's instructions (rum change due to necessity). Very nice. Ran out of semi-rich simple, however. Second iteration, made my wife's with agave syrup and mine with lemon-lime oleo saccharum. Hers was pleasant, mine blew open the doors. Highly recommend that substitution.
I'm going to try it tonight..... I cannot drink grapefruit juice due to a med I'm taking so I'll be doing a riff on a riff.... :-). thanks, you two are the BEST! Rock on.....
This is my absolute favorite warm weather drink! I like to switch the proportions of the juices and hold back a little on the syrup, but I will never say no to one. Thanks, as always for your great content.
If you're ever in. Phoenix, AZ... Go to Bitter and Twisted and order Hemingway's Demise. They add bitters and an absinthe spritz to the rim... Also they use heavier rums... Smith and Cross and Flor De Cana. It's absolutely delightful.... then order everything else off the menu, you'r welcome.
let me start of by saying: I absolutely love this cocktail. was out of grapefruit today so I tried adding half an ounce of cointreau instead, was sweeter but also lovely
Genuine question (from a European) - would anyone be mad if you drunk at home? I mean if you are 20 and rent a flat and go to work and make yourself an Old Fashioned on Friday evening, would that be weird?
@@katarinajanoskova plenty of Americans drink alcohol before they turn 21. The hard part is acquiring the alcohol, since you’d need to know someone over 21 to buy it for you.
Yes this is a very tasty cocktail. Luckily in Canada we have Havana Club (like 4 different varieties, sorry!) and you are very right about the Luxardo maraschino - it can be very bossy. Have not had one of these in a while but you have inspired me to revisit it. I miss the old white grapefruits. No matter what people say, they WERE more tart.
I may have squealed out loud a bit when I got the notification for this! XD I'm happy to say this is the same ratios I have always used, though I have never tried the peel in the shaker, excited to try that!
I have determined, thanks to this drink, that orange liqueurs and now cherry liqueurs are nauseating for me after one drink. So in a way that’s great, I don’t crave a second. Very nice drink overall, and I don’t want a second. I’m like this with margaritas made with Cointreau as well now. It works out
I have my own Daiquiri recipe... 2 oz white rum 1 oz Orange Liqueur 1 oz Club Soda 3/4 oz Lime juice 3/4 oz triple sec syrup Shaken with ice...strained and served in a coup Might be sacrilege but it's DELICIOUS.
Found the Real McCoy Rum at Walmart that surprised me, had all the rest of the ingredients, not sure but maybe my favorite cocktail ever, wow flavor city thanks
I like to sub home-made grenadine for a pinker color, but I agree, it's much better with some sugar. I like your recipe. The smuggler's cove hemingway daquiri is very dry, for me, but it is well balanced.
I like cocktails with grapefruit and this one sure is tasty. I made it with the classical Havana Club 3yo, but also tried to up the game and either add 0.5 oz Smith and Cross, or completely replaced the Cuban with the Jamaican rum. it became fabulous! Cheers!
Some friends got together and decided we were going to make our favorite drinks from your videos. We didn't realize how many there were. We made them anyway. Needless to say we only got about 1/3 of the way through until we erred on the side of moderation. Another great video. You and Oz make a great team and produce some great content.
I am going to try this soon. It is hot here and It is cocktail time. Thanks you are awesome. Also I love watching you and Oz together. I hope to find my Oz soon and make her a great cocktail from one of your recipes.
I got to visit el Floridita earlier this year when I went to Havana! Pretty touristy now but still a cool vibe. Got a pic next to his bust in the corner of the bar with Fidel lol
You can get Cuban rum. Just go up to Canada to buy it. You can also order it online from the UK but be prepared to pay almost 200 bucks for a 20 dollar bottle of rum.
One of my all time favorites! I'm doing it with a little bit more Rum (2oz), less sugar (1/4) and more grapefruite juice (1/2) - I'll try your ratios next time and I'm very curiouse about shaking the peel! Cheers!
Man you read my mind! As national daiquiri day approaching I was thinking i should give the Hemingway daiquiri another try but I'll have to change the recipe a bit more to my liking and this is the exact ratio I had in mind!! Including the grapefruit regal shake!!😅
Hi Anders….I love a good daiquiri….the perfect drink to beat the heat!👌👌I do promise not to drink 16 of these.🤪🤪. ….and beautifully served as always👏👏enjoy your weekend-stay cool-CHEERS!😁😁
Terrific drink! Great for a summer afternoon. Question: When mixing two, double the recipe in the shaker, or mix separately? Shake longer?? Any tips???
My preferred build is a lot more aligned with Hemingway's original specs. 0.25 oz Luxardo, 0.25 oz grapefruit, 0.75 oz lime, and 2 full oz of JM White agricole, at 55% abv. I like to serve it in an old fashioned glass on one big rock.
Anders, you are Awesome! You have a great delivery that is short but not too short, and you are always super-informative. And, WOW, was this drink a hit with my wife and me! Thanks! Cheers!
Aha! A third recipe to try! Kevin (Kos) introduced me to the Hemingway daiquiri, and I loved it. Then along came JF with his excellent version, for those days (or nights) that one needs a drier rendition. But tonight I'll be mixing Anders' (Αnders's...?) recipe. Now which 13 other cocktails should I have... 🤔
I discovered this cocktail about 3 months ago, and I’ve been trying to find *just* the right ratios for me. I usually do it with 2oz rum and 1/2oz grapefruit juice, but maybe I’ll try it with 1.5oz of rum next time!

Please don't drink 16 of these cocktails
Don't forget your bottles from Curiada! bit.ly/hemmingwaybottles
