Boulevardier has been one of my favorites for years. I just keep coming back to it. It was my gateway to negroni and Campari in general, as beforehand I didn't like Campari much. Now i can quite happilly consume a shakardo.
      I love you too.

Instant classic episode for me, Boulevardier is one of my absolute favorites! I have tried this many different ways and my take aways are: 2:1:1 is superior than equal parts; flamed orange oil is superior than regular expressed one. Also, I would suggest trying it with Punt e Mes, it makes a wonderful Boulevardier! Cheers Anders and Az, been waiting for that episode for a while now, and you didn't disappoint! 🥂

Great recommendation, Anders. This is one of my favorite cocktails as you can drink it in colder weather - or all year long... I like the 2:1:1 build. People may even want to try something along the lines of 2 oz. of bourbon, 1.5 oz. of good sweet vermouth and 3/4 oz. of Campari in the Boulevardier (this is especially true for the Negroni as the Campari can overwhelm the other ingredients). I like the Boulevardier with an orange peel and a large ice cube in an Old Fashioned glass. The Punt e Mes recommendation from you guys is something I have to try-thanks. Great channel!

For a lighter summertime version of the Boulevardier, try an Old Pal, which is a simple substitution of a good dry vermouth for the sweet vermouth in a standard Boulevardier build.

  • @egosumhomovespertilionem

The Boulevardier is a much better drink when it is made with rye whiskey rather than bourbon. It is also better when it is made with a heavier proportion of whiskey, rather than three equal parts of whiskey, Campari and sweet vermouth. For most Negroni family drink builds, I typically use 1.50 parts whiskey, 0.75 Campari, and 0.75 sweet vermouth. This is sometimes referred to as a "Left-Handed Negroni" or, in this case, a "Left-Handed Boulevardier." The quality of the sweet vermouth also has a dramatic impact -- don't buy crappy sweet vermouth from Martini and Rossi in order to save five or ten bucks. For a good bottle of sweet vermouth, you should expect to pay a minimum of $20+ for a 750 ml bottle. Most liquor stores will have Cocchi Vermouth di Torino, Cocchi Dopo Teatro, Carpano Antica Formula, and/or Carpano Classico, and there are other excellent Italian sweet vermouths out there. Dolin Rouge, a French sweet vermouth from Bordeaux, while a high quality product, is a little thin. Before you buy, read the online reviews.

    • @PyrrhusBrin

So I have to disagree about the rye, I feel that rye while great does not have that nice rounded body that bourbon has.

I make this with Nonino Quintessentia Amaro b/c I find Campari too bitter though I had an excellent one in Italy made with Campari. But everything taste better in Italy I use 1.5 oz of bourbon, and 1 oz of Amaro & vermouth. I pour it over a big square ice cube instead of straight up. Will try your recipe which probably mellows the forwardness of the Campari when it's 3/4 oz. Thanks

My favorite whiskey drink is the boulevardier and your suggestion for a larger part whiskey really brings it forward.

Love this drink, and so glad you got around to doing this episode. Besides the bourbon, I do the opposite - choosing a bit richer Amaro instead of Campari, and a simpler vermouth instead of Cocchi. In particular, I use Gran Classico, or sometimes something even richer like CioCiaro or Ramazotti, and then always a more straightforward vermouth like Carpano. I prefer to keep the vermouth simple and have more of the action with the bourbon and Amaro. In any case, thanks for this episode!

Heavy agree. When I turned 21, I started drinking with bourbon. After slugging it down despite not *really* liking it, I really found my place with rye in the whiskey arena. Nowadays, I’m a gin guy. However as a bartender, I’ve felt the need to gain at least an appreciation for barreling processes. While repo and añejo are the preferred barrel booze for me, my attachment to bourbon strictly comes from the fact that the finance bros I serve but it by the bottle practically. I’m American and our signature liquor, bourbon, is sooooooo overrated.

@@sonnyboyfranco Yeah, I tried bourbon when I was young and didn't like it. A couple years ago, I decided to try it again just to see if I was just going off a bad drink when I was a kid. But no, I really don't like it, and I tried four or five different ones that were recommended to me. But I really like rye, and I also enjoy Irish whiskey and some scotch. I once made a Boulevardier with Slane, and it was surprisingly good.

Like you, I prefer most of my classic whiskey cocktails with rye, rather than bourbon -- even though I prefer to sip bourbon over rye on the big rock. That said, if you get the opportunity, try a Boulevardier (or Paper Plane) made with Henry McKenna 10-year bottled-in-bond bourbon. Might change your mind about some bourbons. Not all bourbons are syrupy sweet (arguably, not even most).

Bought a shirt! I love the color and design on the back. Please consider creating a zip up sweatshirt with the same design as the new shirt. I love the hoodies, but I’m partial to zip ups. Idk why, but please please please think about it 😄🫶🏻🥰
Also, so happy to see the Boulevardier have its own video. Cheers & Happy Thanksgiving! I’m very thankful for all you two do! 🥃🍽️🍗🍂🍁🧡💛🤎

This is by far my favorite drink! I learned about it on a previous video and have been drinking it ever since. Have only been to one establishment that knew it by name - everywhere else it’s a Negroni but with bourbon. I’ll have to start specifying the rations next. Thank you for the experience.

Love your channel and Anders and Az's reactions. This is my favorite as well and when using bourbon I go 2-1-1, but with rye I use 1.5-1-1. I am not sure if it is available where you are, but my go to is Alberta Premium Cask Strength Rye (2023 64.2%) with Carpano Antica and CamparI ...this rye can stand up to both the Antica and the Campari even at 1-1-1. Cheers.

A fave of mine (2:1:1), though I use rye at home (I order it out quite a bit, so I have had many with bourbon).

Never been a big friend of Campari, but this is just my style and has just exactly the right balance between the ingredients. Just love it! FIRST TIME EVER I did the 🍊Orange Oil fire blast trick... 🔥wow, I am so proud I managed it 😝 - because of your instructions! Used Elijah Craig Bourbon, Campari of course, and Starlino Sweet Vermouth di Torino... so good.

I am going to try the flamed orange on my next Boulevardier. It is one of my favorites. I also like the variation called the Smoking Hand with a little Islay scotch and chocolate bitters in it. Complex doesn't even begin to describe all the layers of flavor.

I will have to add Campari to my bar for this one. We are enjoying a Manhattan right now with homemade bourbon cherries. Added this to my cocktail book. Thanks!

I love a Boulivardier! I use Dolin vermouth, but I'll have to try flaming the orange, since I like fire.

Thanks for giving the great Boulevardier an episode all it’s own! A splendid cocktail. I typically make mine with Rittenhouse rye and I feel like I recall you recommended that a few years ago, as a spicy 100 proof rye stands up better to the Campari. Now I’ll have to try it with some bourbon. A good excuse to make more Boulevardiers!
