  • Did you know... There are 33 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean today (according to United Nations) and out of the 33 Latin Countries, only 20 or roughly 60% of their population speaks Spanish. The rest of the residents speak Portuguese (around 34 percent), and a small percentage speak other languages, such as French, English, and other dialects.
Since 1999, Latino Behavioral Health Week has been observed the third week of September bringing awareness to the Latino community about available culturally and linguistically services. The proportion of Latinos living with mental illness or substance abuse is the same as in the general population; however, Latinos historically underutilize behavioral health services.
For many years, La Familia has been offering Mental Health services and conducting activities promoting awareness through community education, screening, and referrals to linguistic and culturally appropriate services, because we know our communities and know the differences each culture has on their mental health.
Jesse Armenta, La Familia'ss Clinical Director shares more about one of the events held in September of 2021.
