MRE Review: Vintage 1995 Chili And Macaroni from Steve1989 MREinfo (Frozen for 20 Years!)

    Here are a few of Steve's frozen MRE reviews:
    1993 Pork With Rice in BBQ Sauce:
    • 1993 Frozen For 15 yea...
    1993 Omelet with Ham:
    • 1993 Frozen For 15-20 ...
    1993 Tuna with Noodles (compared to a poorly stored 1989 one):
    • 1989 Vs 1993 US MRE Fr...
    So, this is pretty exciting (for me at least, hopefully others will find it interesting too). Steve1989 MREinfo sent me one of his super-rare frozen MREs. Old brown bag MREs aren't particularly rare or hard-to-find, but not many people thought to collect these things and freeze them for twenty years. The good thing about that is that we get a chance to go through a virtual time machine and try out a 20+ year old MRE that is actually in pretty close to new condition! It's the only way to make a truly "fair" review of one of these things on TH-cam. Generally when doing a review of an old MRE or other ration it ends up being more of a mystery and comedy of errors than a true review. You open the bag and have no idea what condition the contents will be in. Generally they're not even edible and you take a pretty big chance just taking a little taste. These examples were frozen while still within their original lifespan so we can experience (see, smell and taste) what a 1995 MRE was actually like in 1995 or 1996 or so!
    I apologize for the fact that this is such a long video (longest I've ever posted), but there really was a LOT of stuff I wanted to cover with this one (from the history of this MRE itself, my thoughts on frozen MREs being like vampires, the actual opening and full review of the MRE, a comparison of the 1995 entree to one from 2011 and a final push to eat everything (mostly) on camera). I did consider breaking this up into two parts, but really just wanted to get everything out there at once. Feel free to watch part of it now and finish it up later! I hope this was worth the effort and that at least some others will also appreciate how amazing of an opportunity this was. Heck, even the FRH was interesting (both in how it looked and how amazingly well it worked!). Thank you again Steve1989!

    Its so funny seeing your actual eating speed after so many views of you patiently reviewing each component, testing it and poking it.
    Such a shock

    • @gschultz9
      @gschultz9  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +apatheticAnxiety Yeah, I generally don't eat everything on camera because the videos are already long enough and I figure people don't want to watch me sit there and eat after the review's done. But in this case I felt I HAD to eat it on camera so people would believe that I actually did it. And then I had to do it FAST (both to keep it from getting TOO long and because I was actually running late for something!).

    From what I've read they didn't add more information about ingredients because they added more, they added it because by law they require them to add ALL of the ingredients on the packaging instead of a "slimmed down" version.
    Great video gs!

    The difference in ingredients seems mostly in the expanded ingredient list for each item (e.g. what the macaroni is made from), while the 1995 version is briefer.

    • @gschultz9
      @gschultz9  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +NUSensei Yeah, I was kind of thinking it probably had to do with a bit of "truth in advertising" from when they were required to put full nutritional information on all packaging.

    That Tabasco sauce looks like this weird bottle of beer they found off the coast of Nova Scotia, where I live. It was sealed and still had liquid in it, and the guy was trying to figure out if it was beer.
    I offered to try it for the price of a large pizza and $50.
    Eventually, someone in a more professional capacity manned up and tried it, and it was beer.

    You're a brave man gschultz ;). Nice review, quite unique opportunity to compare the same dish from different era. I think that nowadays they try to satisfy everyone's needs - I mean the food has to be neutral - not to harm the taste, and you have to add spices. Probably 20-30 years ago there were no vegetarian or halal versions of MRE and people had to live with it ;)

    Awesome review. :D
    Btw, you can put stuff in the freezer and sort of avoid the freeze burn. You first have to cool them down as far as possible with a ice-less refrigerator.
    I have a Bosch unit with refrig and freezer, that's how i do it whenever i have some stuff i put inside (usually i leave it in the refrigerator for a full day before chucking them up in the freezer).
    For example, i keep fruits for jam or as ingredients frozen inside. The oldest i have is from 2009, plums (cut, sliced, and cleaned), still edible, still juicy upon defrosting. Everyone who's tried to freeze fruits knows you either remove the water or you're going to have problems. This is my grandma's trick, always pays to listen to the old folk tips. ;)

    • @gschultz9
      @gschultz9  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +charlotte coggon It's kind of an odd looking thing. They generally try to make the stuff in MREs look as appetizing and like "real food" as possible. Strange that they went with the look of a boring survival bar with that one. But it did taste pretty good. And yes, it was great to see EVERYTHING looking and tasting so good after all these years!

  • @mahoslash

    The newer chilimac seems to have a lot more macaroni inside while to old one focused a bit more on the chili itself.
    Had to admit the older one looks more appetizing for some weird reason, might because the chili just looks a bit more hardy then the new one. lol
    Great review! Looking forward to the other reviews in the future.

    As far as the difference between the 1995 and 2011, it looks like the newer stuff has more macaroni - which is obviously the cheaper of the ingredients. Then it likely looks like more for the same reason, it's almost certainly 8oz by weight, and the macaroni weighs less than the rest. That's one thing we keep getting better at; making stuff cheaper to produce.

    Those things your finding in the chilli, in the meat industry are called "defects". Veins, grissle or bone that made it through the grinding plate and bone chipper. They are unavoidable. Some batches will have more, some less. Cook up 1lb of ground beef and take a really close look and you will find defects. Also, sugar has an indefinite shelf life. That meaning you can seal up and properly store sugar or honey and your great great great grandchildren will be able to eat it without becoming sick and will remain sweet tasting.

    Your Tabasco sauce was half empty (or full) and I know why. The liquid expanded when frozen and seeped out of the plastic stopper. When thawed the sauce permeated the matches, etc. in the accessory packet. I checked my personal mini Tabasco bottles. They are filled to the top.

      +MultiMagnum62 Thanks a lot Magnum, I appreciate it! You know, I guess it really WASN'T a complete review because I didn't even think to open up that toilet paper and check it out! And with everything in the video I almost forgot that I made that toothpick comment. It's a very small thing, but I really DO feel it would be a nice addition. Everyone might not need a toothpick per se, but then again how many people need the matches these days? I like how some countries include a toothpick, but refer to it as a "Dental Stimulator" or some such thing. Dental health IS an important thing, and how many people are going to have a toothbrush with them in a combat or emergency situation? Being able to pick teeth and chew on a (maybe mint flavored?) toothpick can be a good way of keeping your mouth clean and healthy while giving you a little something to do besides eating when there's some stressful downtime. A very small thing, but I feel also potentially very useful. Wow, did I REALLY just write all that about a toothpick?!?

    From a physics standpoint low temperature is effectively a time machine. With the speed of all your atoms making up molecules moving less per unit of time, it's like you jumped back so many years to where it would have experienced the balance of heat that hasn't been removed... a few years maybe? Perhaps we can find someone with a low temperature physics lab to store an MRE in liquid helium to see how it holds up... talk about susceptible to rough handling though.

    I have a 1995 #4 Grilled Chicken. It was never frozen, so it's probably not good. I think that was the only year they had grilled chicken, meaning it was probably never good. I was a grunt in the mid-late 80's, and the strawberries were my favorite.

    the newer one looks like crap, there are more natural colors in the older one. i cook chili all the time and i think they went cheap. yeah if it tastes anything like something canned it can't be too good. it is less meat and all the good stuff you need. what pisses me off is why??? fn bs that our service men have cheaper more chemically filled meals. without being too political. i know it's about the mre. loved the vid and tyvm!

    Is there something in particular that attracts people to eat MREs? There's always a shock value when I see Steve1989 eat extremely old MREs. People are now "rough handling" MRE's that say not to, just to go against the label? 😕😕

    Why don't they make the cereal bars anymore?

    • @gschultz9
      @gschultz9  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Dom “Amsterdom” Boileau I'm not sure. My guess would be because they don't seem as "fun" as cookies or energy bars. They seem almost too utilitarian and like a survival ration than actual food--and part of the point of MREs seems to be to boost morale with fun and familiar foods as much as possible (popular and traditional comfort foods as entrees, stuff like M&Ms, cookies and other treats as snacks...).

    Did they use to consider monosodium glutamate a spice? That weird thing you picked out of the meat looked like a tube. It was probably a vein or something, gross. Lots of weird stuff in that mystery meat. I am about to gag.

    • @gschultz9
      @gschultz9  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question on the MSG! Trying something like this really shows that MREs have improved quite a bit over the decades. They're still rations and will never be like true homemade meals, but they're certainly better (quality and taste-wise) than they used to be.
