Sometimes I do think MREs in the US emphasize a bit too much on the sweets. Not that it's bad or anything because those sweet snacks could be used as convenient snacks-on-the-go items, but when sitting down and enjoying a full meal, it would be nice to have one more savory side to chow on. But on the other hand it is a breakfast MRE and American breakfast do tend to have more sweet dishes then savory ones......
***** I wouldn't mind that much if this MRE menu traded the pound cake for a pack of Combos. Though I have to admit that it's weird to have Combos or pretzels in a breakfast menu.....I mean, it's just sounds so wrong. lol On the other hand, I do like the idea of having these snacks in a MRE though. Asian MREs such as ones from Japan, Korea, China and Taiwan comes only with an entree and nothing else because we don't have the same food cultures as western countries and it gets boring rather quickly if you're stuck with it for a long period of time. Western MREs are like lovely pinatas compared with Asian ones and to be frank....I really envy you guys on the variety of snack items you have. :)
In america it really depends on where you are. If you look at menu items a place like Ihop may have more sweet but a place like Wafflehouse may be more savory. For most people i know it really depends on their mood on what they want to eat. Also this is the longest comment ive ever posted on youtube.
Ordered a few Canadian IMPs from the guy Gundog sent me to. I am really excited to try the pain =) . Good review as always Gschultz. Hope you have a good weekend!
armyfancanada@outlook.com Their name is Dominic. I ordered 3 rations off of them. They have quite a few options to pick from. I highly suggest the Salmon. It was delicious and the canadian bread is much better than the American Wheat snack bread
I am going to give you the email of the Canadian IMP guy. Their name is Dominic and their email is armyfancanada@outlook.com . He usually has a menu for you to choose from and they get a little cheaper as you order 2 or more. I got 3 from him last time, and the salmon was very delicious. Hope this helps
That's a very good point and something that a number people have suggested. I WOULD do that, but since I don't personally like coffee it would seem like a waste of the cocoa! Still, maybe I'll try it one of these days just to show people that it's an option.
Service personnel are renowned for getting creative with MRE ingredients in ways that range from truly inspired to disgusting. If you hate the cheap instant coffee (can't blame you) but like the cocoa, perhaps combining the two would result in a net level of tolerability that uses both beverage ingredients. At the very least, your reaction would be entertaining. ;)
Re the drinks: in lieu of a HBB, you could heat the cocoa bag in the FRH and skip the coffee, or mix the coffee into the cocoa and then heat. They can call that hash browns if they like, but it's more of a bacon and potato casserole. As you say, what's important is the flavor, not the name. Keep 'em coming, G-man. Outdoor reviews are the best!
Thanks Rocky! It's been kind of interesting seeing the debates about what is and is not a hash brown raging in the comments. It's all a matter of opinion, personal experience and where a person is from. Whatever these things are, they're pretty tasty!
yes an outdoor review! id like to do more mre reviews in the woods but living in the bay area theres not a lot of places to go where there arent people...
Thanks for the review, nice rock underneath ! Where have you filmed it? I'm curious about the hash browns, because it is not common here. Maybe I will find it in a ration
We had some nasty forest fires burn through the Fort McMurray area a couple months ago. Around 80000 people had to evacuate the city and surrounding area. It was ugly. Due to demand the Meal Kit Supply (Canada) site was out of stock for a few weeks. It has since come up showing a slightly different set of menus in the 12-pack. The menus are a little different from the US version.... minor differences in packaging not withstanding. Looks to me like they rushed a whole bunch of MREs through the packing stage and made do with what they had in the production pipeline. In any case... thanks for another good review.
When I was in during the first gulf war, we didn't have warmers. The best was chicken and rice, with the who.e tiny Tabasco bottle on it. The PB and J was constipation, and the freeze dried fruit was terrible. But you were hungry, and made do.
I was actually in even earlier than that and they were even less appetizing then! It was pretty amazing to re-discover MREs about six or seven years ago and see all the improvements they had made since those bad old days (the FRH, the improved tastes/menus, the expansion from 12 to 24 menus...). I'm actually a bit surprised that you didn't like the freeze-dried fruits. While a bit of an odd texture I always found them tasty and kind of fun to eat. A pain to try to reconstitute with water but kind of a neat thing to just eat dry. Thank you for your service by the way.
There's a few different types of hashbrowns: the fried patty type (mcdonalds type), the shredded potato hashbrowns (featured in the video), and (what I see as breakfast potatoes but) the diced potato hashbrowns. I prefer the shredded potato variety :)
@ A totally ordinary aubergine - No - you are confused. Hash browns are either sliced slivers of potatoes that have been browned (grated potato works fine), or chunks of potato in the case of southern style hash browns. A hash brown patty is what places like McDonald's serves, which is an idiotic way of having hash browns even IF everyone considers it the norm. A side note - the product in the Meal Kit Supply would be hash browns if they were browned in a pan...
McD's serves tater cakes, Arby's has them too, Wendy's and Burger King serve tater crowns. They are all remnants of the potato processing line. (End pieces and ones that are too small to cut into French fries).
I know this may sound blasphemous to the MRE eating community but what would people think of cutting the length of the MRE spoon down about 1.5-2 inches? It's intended length was originally for the older style MRE pouches that were tear open from the narrow end. Now that they're open from the wide end, you don't need as long of a spoon. Only thing I would expect remain the same would be to maintain the same durability of the spoon which has made it famous. Just something to help cut waste, cost and weight. The military has already cut out all of the excess cardboard packaging for each main entree and side. Still have the sleeves. I thought I saw one that had a single sleeve for the entree and a smaller card for the side to list nutrition information. Next year's MREs will be packaged in clear pouches made of a new polymer that is one single layer and not 4 layers of plastic and foil laminated together. It will save weight and help extend the shelf life of the food. Fewer oxygen molecules can enter through the gaps in the plastic with the new polymer. If anyone has seen the old applesauce. You'll know that oxygen has made its way in and caused it to oxidize just like if you left a fresh cut apple out in the open for a few minutes.
That looks like a very full meal to me. I think I could share it with someone and have enough, that or figure it is a meal plus a snack. If I was in the service and saw one more MRE with either a Pop Tart, a Granola bar or GORP (trail mix) in it I think I would scream and frag the supply officer.
Cellulose...as they say on the ingredients lists. It's in prepackaged shredded cheese and I think it's in jars of grated parmesan cheese too to act as an anti-caking agent.
hash browns and bacon but no eggs? COME ON!!! what kind of breakfast doesn't have eggs with that stuff? as for the bread, I think i'd prefer hardtack to it to me wheat bread tends to be doughy!! has anyone heard when we're going to see the new air activated heaters? keep hearing about them but haven't seen them yet.
The big problem with eggs is that unless you freeze-dry them (like some of the MCW's), they tend to go bad quickly. Maybe it's just me, but I think I would like my breakfast *without* salmonella, thank you. ;^)
I guess you didn't hear the whole conversation I had about Hot Beverage Bags and how the Meal Kit Supply MREs don't include one? My preference is to shake them up in a HBB, but I had to stir this one up because I didn't have another one handy. That's why I said "you've gotta do what you've gotta do."
It's always nice to see a MRE out in it's natural environment.
Sometimes I do think MREs in the US emphasize a bit too much on the sweets.

I just can't believe that the pop tart was in mint condition! great video as always
I need to stop watching these vids when I'm hungry. Great video!
Great video! I really love your outdoor reviews. The spice cake is a personal favorite of mine. Wish i knew where to buy em individually.
I haven't looked lately, but you might want to check out theepicenter.com
Just checked and they have them! Twelve for about a buck apiece! theepicenter.com/mre-spice-pound-cake-12-pack.html
Woah, what a find! Thanks, I really appreciate it!
I like how you actually do some of these outdoors
Those sparking spice cake sugar crystals looked like a bit of Kiwi Dude magic on camera. Nice special effects, gschultz

marshallhippie ok thanks :D
thank you gschultz9 for reviewing this mre
Ever try mixing the cocoa beverage with the coffee? That might alleviate your beverage heating bag shortage and result in a tasty hot mocha beverage!

I don't generally like coffee, but mixed with cocoa it's actually pretty good.
Marc Hills I think that sounds pretty good

Love the new way of reviewing
I love the 'gschultz9 music' that plays in the beginning
outside review very cool, keep up the great videos!

Ooh, takin' it outside! Lovely weather :)
The intro music heavily reminds me of the Eddsworld intro music, not that I'm complaining!
By the by, great video.
Holy cow I'm just noticing that meal kit supply uses TOTM accessory packets
Is it just me, or is the main meal a little bigger than most other meals? The meal bag looks massive compared to the ones I got.

I don't much care for mre peanut butter but i bet that bread there would pair nicely with those hash browns.
another great video! can't wait for the next one
What an awesome meal!
Cocoa beverage powder with bugs mmmmm lol
Extra protein, LOL.
lol
Is there any kind of crunch to those hash browns?
No, they're pretty, well, I guess the best way to describe them is soft.
mre heaters are also good for sleeping bag warmth, and also as a makeshift heating pad for your back. lol
looks good. I think the bread and just peanut butter would be really dry
I need to try one of these they look so cool xx
>cocoa
>Coffee
>sugar
>creamer
>peanut butter
>no space for multiple drink mixes
>...
>No ranger pudding
>mfw perfect opportunity
a moment of silence for what could have been
Too bad you don't have a Canadian IMP beverage bag. They stand up on their own when filled.

Home fries are fried chunks of potatoe. Those are definitely hashbrowns. McDonald's sells a fried patty of compressed hashbrowns.
A hash brown is a fried potato patty. That meal is just grated potato.

+A Totally Ordinary Aubergine No, ^ are hashbrowns. Strips of potatoe. But yes, you CAN compress them and call it a "hashbrown".

I went and got a pack of Hot Beverage Bags from Epicenter for just such occasions.
What the hell is zapplesauce?
a poor attempt at branding!!! someone's ego woke up!!!
is an enhanced version of applesauce that has helps a soldier perform his/her duties better
It's just plain old applesauce with added maltodextrin for an extra boost of energy. A little extra "zap", as it were.
+gschultz9 Really? I'd heard it was caffeine-enhanced. Well, either way, you get an extra "zap".

Good looking meal, great review ! If only there was A way to have crispy hash browns, Dang ! Peace, John, Magnum
May i ask how old are you?
Hes a very mature and well informed 17 year old.
he is in his 30s
Let's just say that I'm not QUITE as old as dirt. At least not yet.
why i found this relaxing lol
That looks like a very full meal to me. I think I could share it with someone and have enough, that or figure it is a meal plus a snack. If I was in the service and saw one more MRE with either a Pop Tart, a Granola bar or GORP (trail mix) in it I think I would scream and frag the supply officer.
If it came with eggs and a tortilla you could make an taco bell am crunchwrap minus the creamy jalapeno but I tell them to minus it.
awesome video
Bond ... gschultz Bond :D
Nice!
you're a good sport for drinking the coco because I wouldn't drink it haha and mmm hash browns :-P
Looked nice thank you for the video. :)
At this point I wouldnt be surprised if MRE bread had wood pulp in it to cut costs. Just like bakers in the old days.
Mmmm, high fibre bread!!
Cellulose...as they say on the ingredients lists. It's in prepackaged shredded cheese and I think it's in jars of grated parmesan cheese too to act as an anti-caking agent.
keep up with the good work don't let the haters keep you down always in your life think positive and let god be with you and jesus

watching a year later, you could have mixed coffee with cocoa, and used the bag for punch.
Will u ever make a face reveal?🌐
I don't have any plans to do so in the future, but... You might want to look through some of my older videos. Just sayin'...
hopefully none of those birds were perching in the trees above you haha
fire
Yeah never mind though it was a hashbrown party.
intro sounds aincent
That is not military issue MRE's
he states that in the video
Literally the first thing he says is "I'm going to take a look at an commercial MRE."
Correct.
Bona petato
this is great for breakfast well for me anyway idk about u guys
I like your voice 🙂
If I'm outside doing a hike or camping and such, I wouldn't want so much fat free food. You're gonna need that energy.
Christian Wilhite Agreed, and I believe that MRE'S and such are for the military. They really need more, but they need to stay in shape for that.
In the blue cup he drank an ant
If you have ever had the MRE's in this video you would know not to eat hashbrowns w/ bacon or seasoned beans in rice
Somebody said bacon I’m here
Bacon is good!
Had that coffee once before, it was terrible.
Emotionless voice still here XD
Hay Koolaid man.
Omg i ate that before (no one likes the cheese :P)
I do!
+gschultz9 cool!
pop tarts are nasty
That's your opinion m8
that they are, but they do hold up for a while
"I prefer these shaken not stirred. Then proceeds to use a spoon to stir the drink mix!? So dumb...
