Welcome to Unguided, where I'm trying to complete every quest in old school runescape without using a guide, wiki or plugins. I'll only be using my limited knowledge and in-game learnings. Full rules below.

RULES
- No use of OSRS wiki (or any equivalent) for anything - this includes looking up item spawns, quest guides, boss guides, anything
- No use of any other quest helper sites
- No use of quest helper plugin
- Essentially no use of any outside-game assistance
CAVEATS
- I love OSRS TH-cam, I might inadvertently learn something I don't know by watching my favourite content creators, but I'm not going to stop watching them so that's just a risk I'm willing to take + it's unlikely going to be relevant for me
- I may use some QoL plugins, but only a few. Loot tracker to prove grinds, ground items so I don't miss drops (and to add cool loot beams lol) and left click to use bones. Nothing that will give me info I didn't previously have
- I'm going to try and avoid any spoiler comments. If you can, please try not to help me if there's an episode where I'm stuck on something. I appreciate the sentiment but telling me an item spawn or quest step could spoil the fun :)

So, fun bit of lore related to this quest. This is actually the 3rd Zombie invasion of Varrock.
The first was in the 4th Age where Arrav obtained the Shield that defeated Zemouregal.
The 2nd was led by Lucien/Julian 15 years ago, and was stopped through conventional means. This was the one Dimintheis Fitzharmon’s sons fought in.
Ah I thought that! I assumed the sons would have been too young or not born to have fought in the same one arrav fought in. Such a great lore questline

@@Salsmachev Without spoiling the entire quest: An ancient being in a position of power with thousands of years to kill got bored and slowly altered names of lineages over generations to include puns.
The quest had nothing to do with scurry, he's just there now.
They were released around the same time, but defender of Varrock was 1 month after Scurrius, I can see why our guy didn't know, but as you say, they have nothing to do with each other
Scurrius is unique to OSRS, Defender of Varrock is a quest in both RS3 and OSRS now. It's just a coincidence; totally unrelated.
For a fun little Easter egg, try giving Ramarno a Redberry pie. Remember how the librarian said all Imcando dwarfs love Redberry pie and Ramarno has never had one.

If you're using runelite, you can right click the little camera icon in the top right and it'll take you to your screenshot folder that runelite automatically takes everytime you level up so you'll never miss a level again

I remember trying to grind for molch pearls for one of the rewards, and getting utterly disheartened by the abysmal drop rate. I'm super excited to see you take on Desert Treasure.
I did the same, went 38 dry for a piece of angler from trawler and gave up after 2 hours of pearls as it was getting close to my dry streak. Defo needs a buff 2x on pearl rates would make it at least a bad option rather than an awful one
@@nzmctk I mean, from what the wiki says, the odds for a pearl are between 1/100 to 1/75. Even if it were doubled, you could still be doing two full inventories of fish and not have a pearl. I can understand the rare activity-currency being that sparse if it were at least fairly low focus, say for example, motherlode mine. But instead, not only is the activity very click intensive, but the pearls are really rare and all the rewards really expensive.
i had a taskman account and got the pearl fishing rod task. i spent a few days there and hated my life. i cannot imagine going for 1k lol
I love seeing the non-questing content too! Can't wait to see what other "distractions" grab your attention! There is one item you mentioned in a video a while back (Eyes of Glouphrie quest/video if I recall correctly) that I would love to see you get one day.

My clan recently had a bingo event and getting the tech was on the board, so I decided to be the one from my team to get that done. It took well over 24 hours of aerial fishing, and I'm nowhere close to getting the fish sack. It got to a point where my team was begging me to stop for the sake of their mental health, so I can only wish you good luck with your own Legend of the Golden Tench.

So the 52 Hunter requirement was just for searching a few bushes I suppose
I dig when there's a requirement that's related to something you gain the ability to do but not that thing itself. Wish we saw more of them.
it made a lot more sense when it was originally released in rs3, as the varrock guard were actually suspicious of zemouregal and had you and an expert tracker searching the wilderness for tracks to find his base there.
Please never quit this. Seeing you do the high level quests in the future sounds so exciting and is why I am going to turn on notifications for you and leave a comment for interaction. I think I’ll probably go back and like some of the videos I haven’t. Everything about this series is amazing. You’re the third person I have notifications on for so feel special, soup and the gilenor games is one of them, so you’re in good company.

Idk man. It's really not that bad. Its good xp, 3 skills and theres a learning curve to it. It's really good.
@@Ceberoxman isn't talking about exp rates, come on. When the trawler is a better way of getting the shared uniques between the two you gotta know the rates suck.

@@Joural0401 But its part of what makes aerial good. The pearl rates get better as you get less shit at it.
Aerial is fun as fuck and a completely optional "prestige" grind. It shouldn't be changed.
@@Ceberoxright, so, anglers on trawler is a 1/12, that's an 11 minute/chance grind, ~132 minutes expected for one piece of anglers. What's the expected time at 99s to get enough pearls to buy a piece of anglers?

As aerial fishing enthusiast they could literally make activity more rewarding by having more "golden tenches" in the drop table. The issue really is that the activity while decent and click intensive is simply not rewarding and ends up actually demoralising the fisher. Like just add 1 in 5k worth 50-100 pearls thing that turns heron into cormorant or have chance at pearls when chunking the fish.
The real tragedy that fish sack when combined is actually less useful and for 1 more fish per invetory...
They really need to add "dump storage to bank" into bank UI like they have with looting bags.
You and Josh Isn't Gaming are pretty much my heroes right now, along with Settled these are the best osrs series around

I'm gonna be honest man, just going for the Fish Sack was fucking wild man, that takes a while to do.
Defender of Varrock is a cool quest though, I'm really excited for the followup!
Also the rat boss has nothing to do with the quest, it actually came out about a month before the quest

That story about getting super invested in falconry and going to explore new hunter areas as a kid hits so hard 'cos I was just about the same, it felt so cool because actually getting to the sites was a long trek from everywhere you could teleport to, making it feel like a real expedition.
Really interesting one today since i believe this is the first quest you've done that was added recently. This quest is from 2024! It's nice to see how much smoother you do on modern quests than old ones, shows how much the devs have learned to not make quests bullcrap :)

I also trained up my hunter so I could do this quest unguided in anticipation of your episode because I thought it'd make the video more fun. I totally missed the balcony (my camera angle completely didn't show it at all) and spent ages killing the zombies and trying to use the bottle on the red mist before I finally noticed the balcony.
I love seeing you get stoked on aerial fishing. It really is great content imo - a nice way to train two skills at once with fun rewards, and it's a solid activity for mobile. I totally understand people getting frustrated by the pearl rate though, especially since none of the rewards are big game-changers. Would be awesome if Jagex revisited that.

First time viewer here and ohh man do i like the way You tell the story of the quest. insta subbed. You need to grind hard, so I can hear you tell what happens in While guthix sleeps when it comes to game, while I spacebar throught it.
One tip without spoilers, you can set a target level so you can see how much exp is left
I farmed molch pearls for 70 hours straight to get the fish sack barrel & it burnt me out on osrs for several weeks. I struggle to think about whether it was worth it or not. I can still hear the cormorant screech in my head at night

The memories of just sitting there and fishing with friends from ~15 years ago are still so clear. :D Also I can relate to the random item fixations and willing to spend ridiculous amount of time too well and once/if I obtain them, I do absolutely nothing with them. 😅

Honestly OSRS team should watch these to fill in the gaps on game data that you can’t get directly in the game… IE. the skill guides should identify what mini games you can plan at what levels and what not. Seems to be a lot of information gaps that you wouldn’t be able to find without the wiki.

Defender of Varrock is from 2008 originally, the OSRS version is essentially a remake with some details changed. So its new, but also quite old in a way.

I tried to do Aerial Fishing but its so damn grindy for pearls. Also, Prysin was the Silverlight guy.
I'm actually pretty impressed you're doing the lore path for DT1. I really love the mahjarrat lore. Lucien seems to be chasing something powerful that could be dangerous to chase, or at least that's what Zemouragal thinks. I think we will see an expansion of that with new quests soon.

The fish sack might ve the longest grind for a singular cosmetic item in the game where on averafe you get around 27 pearls per hour at 99 fishing and hunter.Meaning at peak efficiency it takes around 40 hours. Completing the minigame at least 60-70 hours. At least technically the fish sack now has 1 use case you will probably never find out at all since I do not think the game explains it. The only hint I can give is that it is related to something else within the fishing skill
I know you said no plugin but I agree you should absolutely be able to use this fishing plugin. Also plugins like highscores, xp per hour, notes and such I feel are not antithetical to the challenge one bit. Loved the video as always!

yo, those barronite deposits actually drop outside the quest. ramarno explains how you can smash em open for smithing xp and how they may have stuff inside them. enjoy!

I also fell in love with fish sack (and the fishing rods) on my Ultimate Ironman, but for slightly different reasons than you. And that silly little side grind took my fishing 3 mil exp above level 99 :'D
I swear Jagex should buff the drop rate of the pearls, they're ridiculously rare for how many you need for relatively pointless items. I mean yeah, it's completely optional grind.. But still the 1000 pearls is insane requirement for how slow they are to get.

Defender of Varrock is shockingly similar to the RS3 version, even though it's 16 years newer. I guess since it was a 2008 quest, it's almost entirely based on the same lore etc, but a few locations are pretty different (Kamdozal).
i found it quite /surprising/ that you don't see the pun that is Sir Prysin's name. With the exception of king arthur's knights for obvious reasons, pretty much every named knight is a pun.
