Easy Ham Recipe - How to Bake a Ham

  • A delicious ham turns any gathering into a special occasion. It's easy to prepare a ham, too. Place the ham on a rack in a roasting pan. Next, insert a meat thermometer. Insert the thermometer into the meat, making sure it's not touching bone, or you won't get an accurate temperature reading. Bake the ham in a 325-degree oven for about one hour and 45 minutes. While the ham is baking, make a flavorful glaze. When the baking time is up, remove the ham from the oven, and brush with some of the glaze. Bake the ham 30 minutes more, or until the thermometer reads 130 degrees and the ham is ready for carving.

    Thanks, 1st time a ham came out right. Didn't have a good glaze so I used Log Cabin. Maple flavored ham. Still not hot enough for me on the inside @ 140 degrees. A little microwave cured that. Oh yeah you can guess how many times I tried by my age. I'm 66.

      How can you say how long it should be in the oven for? It depends on how big the ham is to know how long it should be in the oven …a larger one will take longer to cook through than a smaller one 🤔

    Do you need to put water in the bottom of the roasting pan?

    • @jackieblue787
      @jackieblue787 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No. I drain the fat and make gravy using corn starch. Leftovers go in pea soup. Yum

    Looks good but don't you need to cover with aluminum foil? I mean because baking a salty ham like that in an oven will only dry it out and make it saltier.

  • @marylouie7318

    how do you make the sauce for the ham?

    • @StayGold711
      @StayGold711 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I can definitely tell you. It's the old fashioned apricot glaze. Better homes and gardens would be using Julia Childs recipe. All you need is a jar of commercial or organic apricot preserves. Any brand or style you like. Empty the jar into a sauce pan on the stove over low to medium heat, make sure its a thick sauce pot so you don't burn it. Add a couple tips of sugar to sweeten it up a bit and stir while pressing down with a heat proof spatula or a heat resistant stirring utensil that you can mash down the apricot preserves to make them more into a sauce. Let it come to a very very slight slow simmer that barely has bubbles while stirring to prevent scorching. ONCE it reaches being heated through and the preserves are mostly now mashed into more of a sauce than a chunky preserve, get a bowl with a metal strainer and place the strainer over the glass bowl or fire proof bowl of some sort, and pour the sauce through the strainer and press down with your spatula so that all the preserves come out the other side into the bowl coming out smooth. The cooking time shouldn't take no longer than to heat it thoroughly and get preserves mashed down enough to run through your strainer. And your sauce is finished. This sauce can also be used to paint the bottom of pastry shells and let dry a bit, before adding any sort of filling that could soak through and make your pastry shell soggy. I learned alot from Julia child and this better homes and gardens technique is definitely familiar and sounds like it's a jukia child method straight from her old 1962 episodes. Hope you enjoy. Look her up you will find alot of her old shows on here including the apricot sauce she discusses how to make it in her pate chouxe episode which in English means puff pastry which is what you make cream puffs with. I know your comment is 8 years old but this will help anyone else who comes and wants know. Hope it helps . Oh and by the way you can make your own apricot preserves. Just peal and cook with a little sugar and enough water to barely cover slow cook on stove top and mash down keeping eye so it don't burn just keep on low heat and stir. You can look it up on youtube too.

    Shouldn't you look at the weight of the ham then go by the cooking directions on the amount of time to bake the ham?

    • @bhg
      @bhg  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, you do go by weight for the baking time. For a 6 to 8 pound cooked ham with bone, roast for 1 1/2 to 2 1/4 hours at 325.
