I made a mistake at the end when talking about the availability of the new electrochromatic roof (Rivian calls it the Dynamic Glass Roof). It's optional on all models, but it's not available on the dual-motor standard pack R1 vehicles.
I never thought we were ever going to have 2 cars of the same brand in our household, but after having the R1T for a year, I can tell you that the only thing that stopped me from getting a R1S for my wife was the fact that the R2 was announced. It has been such a great vehicle for us, no issues whatsoever and a pleasure to drive.
I love how he instantly noticed a possible usability issue and said maybe we need to make this button a little more intuitive. That's the exact type of engineer for the job.
I have to say this is super impressive of Rivian, class leading automotive tech that continues to advance and improve, thanks for bring us this info Tom!
Just signed a lease for a gen 2 R1S and I honestly couldn't be more excited. This company gets it. I love Rivian already. I can't wait to hit the open road with it. One thing that wasn't mentioned in this video is the audio. We opted for the premium audio and it absolutely blows me away. I've never heard a better system in my life. It's seriously good. I'm so excited about it. Totally worth the upgrade.
Tom, excellent and in-depth review with the Rivian engineers including upcoming software updates for our Gen 1 R1 vehicles. For the price we got our R1S before the March 2022 price increase, it's an absolute steal and we are going to keep ours for a very long time. The only thing I wish we could have in the Gen 1 is to be able to use the Driver+ on roads with divided roadways, not just 'mapped' ones. I would have liked a little bit more resolution on the front and back cameras, but not a big deal. It would come in handy for post incident issues. Love where Rivian is heading and their future is even more brighter than ever before.
Great review Tom. Was really particularly interesting to hear from the Rivian engineers. I took a Rivian R1S for a test drive in 2022 and the harshness of the ride and the noise in the cabin turned me off the vehicle completely, so I am very happy to hear that they have made a very significant improvement in that area . I ended up buying a Tesla, which I have been extremely happy with especially after the suspension changes that occurred in early 2023. I was also really glad to see you mention the issue of an ATM at home charge capability. This to me is the only really big miss that Rivian made with the GEN 2. When you have a battery of over 100 kWh and your super off peak rate is only for six hours a night, having an 80Amp on board charger will make an enormous difference to the cost of charging the vehicle at home. I would really encourage Rivian to reconsider for at least the large pack and max pack versions to have included an onboard charger of 80 Amps.
@@csilver9625 Having an 80/100 Amp onboard charger has nothing to do with daily driving. It's about when you re-charge the battery from below 50% that you have an opportunity to complete the charge within the 5-6 hrs of Super Off Peak Electricity rates. 180kWh battery from 0% would take well over 17hrs with a 48Amp charger, even at 50% it's going to take 9+hrs.
@@joebullwinkle5099 I understand fully and still stand by my statement. daily driving does in fact matter. As you already know if you currently own any EV, each night you only need to replace the energy for the miles you drove that day. With your super off peak hours, even at 48 A at 240 V. It could replenish 170 miles day. So you’re right, if you need to replenish more than that, it will spill over into the next tier of your time of use plan. I hope they will offer the 80 amp as an option in the future especially if people are trying to recharge entire Max pack daily
As a 2022 R1T owner, I’m jealous of the updates. I’ll wait for the native nacs before upgrading. But I also love my meridian sound system too much to switch to a lesser system.
@@Pipesanchez21 they have to change the way AC/DC current is handled, since the power pins are shared on NACS/J3400 vs. CCS1. so, it's likely a new set of wiring harnesses and contactors along with the changes to the battery management software. is that a benefit... meh?

Thanks Tom! Its impressive what Rivian has done and I think it was very helpful for you to compare the suspension differences. At the higher price point buyers are more picky about things like ride comfort and NVH. Im happy to see Rivian made some improvements while also taking a lot of the cost/complexity out too. I still love my Gen 1 R1T and R1S.
Smaller pack and LFP are a match made in Valhalla! It costs less, and the increased endurance more than offsets the fact that it has to be charged more often for the lifetime of the vehicle. Well done on that Rivian!
Thank you Tom. Great video. Great content. EV Technology is evolving very fast, for my next EV I'm considering on Leasing instead of buying so that I can get the new technology every 3 years or so.
Nice! A less expensive, light weight, 2 door T version would sure be nice too! A solar bed cover would be the cherry on top. Keep up the great work, Tom!
Great video as always! Please do a video regarding your Gen 1 R1 after the software update, many owners stated that the car feels better after the update.
I really hope they get a steel roof option. I don't need the added complexity, weight and liability of a glass roof, especially with hail storms getting more intense. Otherwise, I really like the SUV model.
I’m not sure about Rivian’s glass, but Tesla’s glass roof holds up to hail better than steel roofs of other manufacturers. We get hail here in Austin a lot, and Tesla’s roofs don’t typically require replacement… but other vehicles’ metal roofs and hoods do require a lot of repair work.
My biggest gripe is the large pack. The new Large has less usable capacity than my Gen1 standard+. They software locked out so much capacity to make the max look like a good value because before it wasn't. He kind of ducked the question about large. I really want to see how much of a ride quality changes when Gen1 gets this next update.
This model X owner is really glad to see Rivian making a decent product. If it wasn't for Tesla's FSD potential I would have purchased one. Plenty of room for more than one or two electric SUVs and pickups out there.
Here and there, I see little glimpses of Rivian's software and UI in action. While I don't know enough to have a solid opinion, just based on aesthetics and first impressions, I like what I see. Much better than some other instrument panels I've seen on other EVs. What we see here might seem cartoonish or a bit childish, but look again. Part of a good UI is knowing what to strip out or simplify, and what to leave in. I think they're on the right track.
As someone who has developed software (not on this level) the thing that impressed me was when Tom didn't know what "A" and "B" was, and Wassym Bensiad said that meant he didn't do his job well enough. That focus on UI is extremely important.
If this were an ICE vehicle, would updates to CPU processing power, a new offering of engines, and more refined suspension be enough to consider it a new generation? For example the 5th gen Ford Mustang ran from 2005-2014. Even with the exterior changes that occurred in 2011, changes to the suspension, new transmissions and Ford dropping the 4.6l V-8 in favor of the 5.0L engines, they are still considered a 5th generation Mustang. I'll admit it is smart from a marketing perceptive to brand these and Gen2.
From driving the gen 1 RS1 I have one minor quibble. Since Rivian seems to be listening to feedback here, I figured I'd mention it. I wish the cruise control speed set was the roller instead of the buttons. Sometimes I need to rapidly adjust the speed and the buttons require a ton of clicks. If we're about reducing clicks, that's an easy way to gain some back. Rolling is so much faster. The Tesla works this way, so I know it's a better input device for this purpose. I'm hoping Rivian adopts that mapping.
Im on the edge of buying a Rivian R1S; but I have two thimgs holding me back. Could you please adress these on futture videos. First, unsure if I can Fit it in we work garage, it has 2,00 mts but is has a slope of abaout 15 drg... so I think we would have 1,85mtrs effectively. What is the mimimal height you can drive it, and it would remind it daily? Second, we live in South america, do you know if the mavigation would work? Our tesla does not... I get full support, updates, GPS finds locations but it just does not navigate.
It's really disapointing that they won't release Gen 2 at the R1 Shop in Canada which is unfair. Since it's available for reservation holders in the US.
Any insights into Gen1 Driver+ improvements? My biggest disappointment has been the lack of roads covered for such a pricey vehicle. Gen1s were heavily marketed as having advanced driver assistance capabilities with plenty of cameras and sensors. Rivian is on record stating the Gen1s were “future proofed.” Are the Gen2 seats any more comfortable? Mine are OK, but relative to my other cars a bit too firm, particularly on long road trips. Thanks.
Rivian won't be profitable for a long time. NO startup carmaker ever is. I doubt they will be profitable until the R2 & R3 vehicles are at least 1.5 to 2 years in production.
I do think that the improvements were worth the effort and investment, and along the way they have been making the vehicles cheaper to build. Moving motor production in house should help a lot.
Good review 👍 I love the R1T, just not the price. I just bought a 2024 Ford Ranger as the towing and price in EV trucks are not there yet. Hopefully in 5yrs this will be there when I'm ready for a new truck again . Cheers
I have been intrested in Rivian for a while now with this next version of it's existing vehicles I need to see how they still support owners on the now older platform. It won't be worth buying a vehicle when it will loose support as it gets older
80% of the software updates from the new refresh are coming to the Gen 1 vehicles which is amazing . Even in this video they mentioned that Gen 1 software update is coming as soon as this month itself .
I’m waiting for my Gen2 R1T - 2 motor standard battery. (August/September) As a first time EV purchase, I can understand why people hesitate. Other than cost, they should simplify the choices. One battery for the two motor, and a bigger battery for the Tri/4 motor, simple. Paint and Interior options should be across the board. Not limited by model. I would be better off with a Honda Ridgeline, but wanted to try an EV before checking out. I paid the $2,000 for Ocean Coast, but have to accept Dark Ash for wood trim, when I desired Driftwood, with my very light grey interior. Can’t get the Dynamic roof. Too many expensive Nickle & Dime options. Take care of your entry-level market; it will be your most significant newbie demand-high volume, low unit pricing. If you keep the R2 at around 50k, you’ll achieve it. Though priced right, I can see the R3 could be the VW Bug of the EV world-high School and college parking lots filled with them.
The 2024 upgrades sound intriguing! I only wish I could test drive one somewhere (anywhere) in Wisconsin. As long as I'm wishing, I'd like for there to be a service center within at least an hour drive as well. Oh yeah, I'd also like the option of leasing a Rivian. I don't think any of those things are too much to ask if the company wants to sell me one of their vehicles. Lacking the ability to go somewhere to test drive an R1S, I'd be fine with a 1-week loaner... :)
Very interesting and can't wait for your upgrade quote. Thanks Tom. I don't often comment as your charging systems are not suited for me in Australia I had chademo on my leaf. Now my Tesla S has type 2. All Tesla supercharging here is CCS2. Ridiculous big chunky plug rubbish.
I’m just hoping they do something to increase the charging curve of the car. I love the Porsche Tucson charging curve. If the rivian can get to 300kw that would make the cars perfect
There are service centers but if you don't live close to one, they come and fix it at your location with mobile service. I'll have a video on that soon.
In my area, we have 3 service centers within 45-90 minutes. All have a 3 month wait and mobile service is 1+ month. Service is something Rivian really needs to improve, particularly for vehicles at their price points.
Looking at the specs of the 2nd gen I suspect they lowered the vehicle height and clearance - thus reducing vehicle travel , reducing offroad capabilities a little bit by reduced costs in the suspension, likely more car like suspension components - Since you have had your R1S for awhile , you're not comparing new vs new , gen1 NVH improvements can be made if you switched to different or new tires.
I hope I'm understanding this correctly, the tri-motor is their new inhouse motor in the rear, while utilizing the carryover motor from their dual motor in the front? Or is the front motor another new in house motor?
@@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney the man, the myth, the legend replied! You made my Friday! Awesome content as usual! Thank you for the information! How much of the new gen2 refresh/upgrades (lightbar? Motors? Etc) do you think will transfer over to the R2, given that they want to reduce the cost of the build? I love my Polestar 2 but I would definitely trade it in for a R2
This blows Tesla away as far as the interior quality and exterior design in my opinion. Also I love that the long range trim has 410miles of range. This might be my first EV but I'm leaning more towards the R2. Thanks for the video! I hope Rivian continues to improve. I simply don't like Tesla's as far as their exterior designs and interior. Plus they're everywhere here in the SF bay area.
23:04 surprising. Meaning any current Rivians owners are now f*cked cause the new ones are so much better just after 2 years. If these improvements came after 4 years then it would be more understandable but to have such a big change with everything is crazy but also great at the same time. This is why with EVs the tech changes so fast like our phones 10 - 15 years ago. Nowadays our phones doesn't change so much.
Pricing is not quite as high as I was expecting. A high end Lyriq runs similarly. My main concern is Rivian's likelihood to become profitable, considering current market conditions. Same for Lucid.
Rivian has promised positive GM by Q4 of this year. If they hit that, they can survive for sure. Next step is positive FCF and that can be achieved by scaling up. R2 will be the key for scaling up for sure.
I really hope that the R1T makes it's way to the UK sometime soon as it is the only EV I am interested in and that could possibly tear me away from the Toyota Hilux.
I don't understand their statement that the onboard computer is capable of 250 Trillion calculations per second. It would be interesting to know how they define what a "Calculation per second" is because I'm not sure is would be the standard definition.
Rivian can't survive selling $80k+ vehicles, no matter how awesome the computer, battery and other features are. Lets hope for their sake they can get the R2 made .
As an owner of both R1T and R1S, I am jealous of the refreshed version. But Still does not have 800 V architecture, no rear wheel steering, no steer by wire, and most importantly, no ADAS system available for city driving……still behind Cybertruck. 😢
Tesla self driving sucks in my area, I really wanted to like it, but I constantly had to keep taking over. The newest version was a lot better, but still drove worse than a teenager that just got their permit (in my area). So if Rivian self driving = Tesla, I still wouldn’t pay for it.
After watching, I am even MORE FRUSTRATED with Rivian. I received my max pack mid December after placing a deposit in 2019. I have been complaining to Rivian almost from the beginning about the "squishy" suspension sound on any bumps under 30 mph (along with all the other noises and rough ride). Obviously they were well aware of these issues, particularly suspension, and there is absolutely no way i would have taken delivery had i known about these noises and even more insulting that with all my contact with them, they never acknowledged that they were working on these "normal" deficiencies. Finally after many, many conversations (the last one fairly heated), they are going to use some parts on the new generation and place them on my vehicle, but the fact is that i would have sold my vehicle and waited had they just been honest. Very dissapointed in a company/vehicle i wanted to love.
This why I lease a Hummer EV SUV. The Tech changes so rapidly that the previous models depreciate just as fast. Love the Rivian but hate the look of the front end.
The interesting point will be whether the company can stay in business. It's a niche market and they're not supposed to be profitable until 2027. Cash runs out next year. Good luck with your orphan vehicles if that happens.
No non-Tesla will have NACS before 2025. It wouldn't have been possible for anyone to do it before then. It's not like they just order the hardware and stick it in the vehicle. Changing the vehicle's chargeport takes at least 2-2.5 years for supplier contracts certification and homologation processes.
Great vehicle, but missing some key features you'd expect at this price point. If I can get a KIA with the missing features at 10k less, it's a challenge to sell the spouse on getting this over that. Add HUD and ventilated 2nd row seats and I'm sold. I also like to see Captain's chairs in the 2nd row as an option, but not a deal breaker. Just easier for access to 3rd row or storage with captains chairs.
If it looks the same and has improvements in battery, power and hardware, it's not a second generation. In fact, they're fixing the mistakes they made before and charging you more for it.
Hyundai, Kia, Genesis have the blindspot camera in the driver’s display when turn signal is engaged, unlike the stupid Tesla solution you only mentioned.
The charging port still in the wrong position....put the damn charging port driver rear position im sure most drivers want to use the tesla superchargers
A warning to viewers that Rivian is widely expected to go into Bankruptcy in ‘25 should have been noted at a minimum. Anyone thinking of buying either of their cars now is taking a huge risk. Just ask Fisker owners.
This wisely follows Tesla in making the the most substantive improvements on the inside, where it really matters, rather than focusing on external appearances, like the OEMs do.
Tesla had the most to improve over the years, so it made sense that they would make updates to the vehicle under the hood mid-cycle such as improving suspension, road noise, dual pane windows, etc. Though there are examples of other vehicles in the industry that don't change much of the exterior styling for years on end but will offer improvements to the suspension, engine, trim, etc. The Toyota Tundra exterior went largely unchanged from 2007-2021.
I made a mistake at the end when talking about the availability of the new electrochromatic roof (Rivian calls it the Dynamic Glass Roof). It's optional on all models, but it's not available on the dual-motor standard pack R1 vehicles.
stop bitching about you having the first gen car, just sell it and get the new one! prices are dirt cheap in american dollars...

I love the R1T, just not the price.
Did you drive the base dual motor or the performance?
How is the handling and ride quality ?
People would trash them and use them as rental cars for free, unfortunately
Nice review
Very interesting and can't wait for your upgrade quote. Thanks Tom. I don't often comment as your charging systems are not suited for me in Australia I had chademo on my leaf. Now my Tesla S has type 2. All Tesla supercharging here is CCS2. Ridiculous big chunky plug rubbish.
I’m just hoping they do something to increase the charging curve of the car. I love the Porsche Tucson charging curve. If the rivian can get to 300kw that would make the cars perfect
Will the ultrasonic sensors disrupt dogs (my dog seems to hate riding in the rivian) and other animals
Where do you get this vehicle fixed? How long to fix on going issue.
Oh wow 😮 didn't realize about the maintenance of these cars@@daadreeb6582
The R1S gen 1 compressor is very noisy, did they fix that in gen 2?
Looking at the specs of the 2nd gen I suspect they lowered the vehicle height and clearance - thus reducing vehicle travel , reducing offroad capabilities a little bit by reduced costs in the suspension, likely more car like suspension components - Since you have had your R1S for awhile , you're not comparing new vs new , gen1 NVH improvements can be made if you switched to different or new tires.
Does anyone know if the cameras will be continuously recording in all directions acting as dash cams?
I hope I'm understanding this correctly, the tri-motor is their new inhouse motor in the rear, while utilizing the carryover motor from their dual motor in the front? Or is the front motor another new in house motor?
Carryover
@@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney the man, the myth, the legend replied! You made my Friday! Awesome content as usual! Thank you for the information! How much of the new gen2 refresh/upgrades (lightbar? Motors? Etc) do you think will transfer over to the R2, given that they want to reduce the cost of the build? I love my Polestar 2 but I would definitely trade it in for a R2
Are the screens better resolution?
Any dimensional changed?
4.5 Sec is already dang fast!! Do we need a 2.9 - 2.5 Sec family SUV???
Need? definitely not. Want? That's up to the individual😁
I think the sweet spot is the 3.4sec 0-60 second $5000 power upgrade to the dual motor.
How does ride quality compare to F150? Wish I needed a truck because this is what I would buy.
Still not as soft as my lightning, but it handles better
Does it come spare tire ?
I really hope that the R1T makes it's way to the UK sometime soon as it is the only EV I am interested in and that could possibly tear me away from the Toyota Hilux.
Looks pretty tough in black. Rivian going from strength to strength
So why are the Gen1 R1's on sale yet?
There's just a little inventory left, which should be gone soon
Thank You for All that you are doing for our Planet Earth....
Peace.. Shalom.. Salam.. Namaste

I don't understand their statement that the onboard computer is capable of 250 Trillion calculations per second. It would be interesting to know how they define what a "Calculation per second" is because I'm not sure is would be the standard definition.
These have an autopilot yet?
Rivian's system is called Driver+. Similar to Autopilot, it's not a hands-free system, but it's not as advanced at Autopilot or FSD.
I am hoping for the success of the Company because I want the coming R3.................Paul
Rivian can't survive selling $80k+ vehicles, no matter how awesome the computer, battery and other features are. Lets hope for their sake they can get the R2 made .
Now they have funding from VW. They will survive
As an owner of both R1T and R1S, I am jealous of the refreshed version. But Still does not have 800 V architecture, no rear wheel steering, no steer by wire, and most importantly, no ADAS system available for city driving……still behind Cybertruck. 😢
Gen1 ADAS has been a huge disappointment.
Heat pump is nice, but why did it NOT have a heat pump 2 years ago?
It's standard equipment on EV's these days.
How long before Rivian catches up to tesla in self driving?
Not for a while...
Very dissapointed in a company/vehicle i wanted to love.
still, lack of a 7-11kW power output inverter, and battery downward resizing are both baffling and disappointing
Man, I think 🤔 you are going to upgrade 😅😅
I'm holding out for the R3....I like the R1 and R2 are nice....but too big for me.
This why I lease a Hummer EV SUV. The Tech changes so rapidly that the previous models depreciate just as fast. Love the Rivian but hate the look of the front end.
Hello dear. Please check with them if they give me an exclusive to India. I am interested in that
Too bad you missed the brand new EA station in Moab. Pull through, 350’s - so much better than Tesla
The interesting point will be whether the company can stay in business. It's a niche market and they're not supposed to be profitable until 2027. Cash runs out next year. Good luck with your orphan vehicles if that happens.
Can't believe it didn't come with nacs connector, so its a fail.
Evolutionary
Great vehicle, but missing some key features you'd expect at this price point. If I can get a KIA with the missing features at 10k less, it's a challenge to sell the spouse on getting this over that. Add HUD and ventilated 2nd row seats and I'm sold. I also like to see Captain's chairs in the 2nd row as an option, but not a deal breaker. Just easier for access to 3rd row or storage with captains chairs.
If it looks the same and has improvements in battery, power and hardware, it's not a second generation. In fact, they're fixing the mistakes they made before and charging you more for it.
Yes the turn signal in rivian is in your face because of the mini screen. Rivian still lacks NAC SC solution and no FSD unlike Tesla Tesla
So rivian just accelerated your depreciation by making a way better version of what you have. Nice.
Tesla never did this much change in 2 years though.
Let's be real. This is the Rivian should have launched with considering what they charged for those vehicles.
Can't get past Tesla's sloppy assembly and cheap interiors, drive train is great.
UI update… Soon? No this month. This ain’t Ford lol.
R8.
The rivian would be awesome if it wasn’t for those stupid headlights.
Would have bought R1S but they canceled European plans on it.
Would have been good if the guy accidentally wore a VW shirt. 😇
