French here, still better in native than traducted by this horrendous AI voice. Nice test by the way, keep the good work on the allroad testing, it's quit unique. Subscribed a hile ago and it's my favorite kind of videos
Looks like an awesome vehicle. I'm also excited for the Scout because it has a bench seat in the front. I think it will also be 100k though. If we start getting 15 year loans for cars and 45 year mortgages for homes I can start making grown-up purchases like this!
I'm excited for the release of the R2 and R3 (and R3X). I was able to sit in both at a Rivian dealer and the interiors are just unbelievable. Hope the brand sticks it out and delivers.
Great video! I've been waiting for a few years now to see you behind the wheel of a Rivian. I'm nearly 2 yrs into owning my launch edition R1T (quad motor, large battery, 20" offroad wheels), and I love it. First off, I'm not surprised with all the things you like and enjoyed about the vehicle, and the few small complaints are mine as well. Yet overall, you get used to the minor quirks because everything else is so good. As for the range, I only have 310 miles of max range in a conserve mode (quads get this to fully disconnect the back motors for highway cruising). For longer road trips, 310 miles is sufficient, but I've wanted more a few times. It's been challenging in certain regions that are not heavily populated with a variety of charger options. On one hiking trip, I had ~10% charge left when I pulled into a town that had a lone 50W charger and the rest were level 2. In cases like this, you have to wait potentially a long time (1-2 hrs) until you can even plug in to charge. That was also before Tesla Supercharger NACS adapters were available, so that issue has been mitigated to nearly zero now. But I would love to have 400 miles of range to not be stuck waiting for a backed up charging station. If I hit 25% with 100 miles left, I would have many more options to pick from. 300 miles of range doesn't give you as many. I look forward to seeing you test a more offroad Rivian, because it only gets better!! I also hope they provide you a tri or quad motor version, not because you need all the extra power additional motors provide (with slightly less range), but you also get more drive modes to test than a dual motor version. Been a fan, and happy you've finally had your first Rivian experience. It is a special vehicle.
This perfectly illustrates the issue with EVs becoming a mass market widely purchased product. This is an awesome vehicle. 400-ish mile range, all wheel drive, loads of useful room etc….but it’s astronomically expensive even in base trim. Obviously moneyed types can afford it as it’s closely priced to a fully loaded Tahoe or Yukon, Suburban etc, and it’s a close competitor size wise also. But if EVs are going to allegedly replace petrol vehicles at some point, there needs to be this level of range and utility at a price that the masses can afford. If there was an EV that was a small to medium size crossover/ute with 400 mile-ish range at a digestible price, I would absolutely buy one. But that’s not a reality right now and probably won’t be for quite a while until battery tech changes. Also I agree with the “automation to the point of insanity “ comment. And I’m a guy who loves all the new tech and screens in cars now. I just find it hilarious that virtually every state has laws against cell phone use while driving and yet car companies are allowed to sell vehicles that require you to use basically a dash mounted cell phone to perform every function in the vehicle.
You make some very good points here. Usually, the price argument answer is to buy them used and I've yet to hear any argument about the distracted driving part. I think this needs more press scrutiny and probably a safety institute mandate. I mean if you ticket humans for it, you should be consistent.
Really great, thorough, and well-voiced overview of this vehicle! Seriously considering this to be my one and only after this! Have a Tesla Model Y and a 2014 ICE SUV, but do a lot of outdoor activities.
Great review! You clearly took the time to learn about the vehicle (eg. Not riding in max height), and called out some legitimate negative points. I'm looking forward to the test of the all terrain version!
Off road driving was impressive. I don't like ev vehicles but this one has good off road abilities and pretty good finished interior. Great review. Greetings
Videos keep getting better and better. Love the music nice and non intrusive but still complementing the vibe. Camera work again amazing. And of course the usual well thought out informative and thorough review as good as ever 👍🏾
We absolutely love our R1S. It's so capable and with NACS charging is a breeze. The only issue they need to solve are service centers. It takes months to get in unless your vehicle is undrivable. Definitely not scalable for the R2 launch
Nice, looking forward to more thorough review with the better tires. I like the R1S but it is too expensive. Waiting to see what R2 has to offer and what Scout comes up with. If then then just get th good old GFX550 at that time.
I really hope and wish Rivian succeeds. The car is well designed, rough and elegant at the same time. Also they need no work on reliability, according to consumer reports. Waiting for the more affordable R2.

Professionals trained and highly experienced in testing engineering and journalism, would be great to test here in the Colorado Rocky Mountains where I reside in the Winter in deep snow and cold temperatures. In the past I was on “Team Ford” Super Duty testing which included Pikes Peak, deep snow and extreme cold high altitude etc. testing.
Great review - please compare this to your Land Cruiser - feels like beside some physical buttons , this is more comfortable day to day - the cheaper options are competitive to the LC and Gx550 for sure.
The cameras don't make the mode changes look significant enough to switch between. But as the driver, I am assuming how it translates into the feel/control is different enough to warrant playing with them. The range is good. But of course, you pay a premium for it. Not sure it has a place in my life, but IF I were forced to drive EV's only, I would consider it.
Even though Rivians are expensive, you get more for your money comparatively. I’ve got high hopes for the Scout to keep price low and still provide great capabilities.

I'm of course a bit conservative, but I prefer the regen on the brake pedal with the natural feeling like Toyota and Lexas have made possible since their hybrid models and now on their ev's like Lexus RZ450e
Hey @drivingsports could you please try to ask for maybe find a viewer, who has an out the door 75k plus tax and fees only no options added R1s ? Like these are very expensive, but the base price is about what I paid for my 3 option bmwx5 so and I know I’m not the only one cross shopping these two vehicles. What’s the base one like the features power range all of that. I know it’s hard to get manufacturers to not send the highest option vehicles, so hopefully a viewer can help! 😊 Love the show been watching for years!
pretty hefty price tag.... if i need to choose between ford f-150 lightning and this, ill grab ford. after all experience in auto making says a lot. in general, not that ford has long EV experience :)thank you for video, pretty good one.

Thanks Ryan. so, what is the profit margin (20%, 40%, 75%) on Rivians now that ops have been moved to in-house depts? When will prices dip under $50k? Outback Wilderness. oh, wait, you didn't actually ask us which one we would buy...my bad
Sure, it's nice and powerful. But with such a very high price tag, only a few can buy this. And how can a new player in the car industry survive if what they're building is not for the masses.
That was also how Tesla started. Reality of new car makers entering the market. At least Rivian has corporate contracts for their delivery vans. (Amazon, etc.)
I think that a high priced vehicle is the Best way for a new car company to establishing themselves. Setting up a company is expensive. Producing fewer expensive Cars is easier then making many cheaper Cars. I hope, that when they are finally established, lower priced options become available
@22:12 the $36.90 for 67.22 kwh is $19.30/gal gasoline equivalent. Even if the motors in the Rivian are 3 times or efficient than a gasoline engine, it still doesn't make economic sense comparatively.
@@drivingsports The math is correct. $36.90/(67.22 kwh)/(3412 Btu/kwh)×(120,214 Btu/ 1 gallon of gasoline) . Try it sometime. The average residential price of electricity in WA for Sept 2024 was $.0.12426/kwh. For the U.S. it was $0.1683 ranging from $0.4074 for HI to 0.1193 for LA. The $0.07/kwh may true for a industrial consumer of electricity or residential consumer getting a rebate for some solar sell back, but not an average consumer.
The off road problem with EVs especially 4 motors is power delivery, there is not enough very slow and smooth power control similar to LOW range and power will always be interrupted to electric motors as computer sees fit resulting in twitchy inconsistent obstacle crossing, if they would actually have low range there would be less possibility for any overheating and better chances for smooth pedal control, then they could possibly override power cuts and keep the delivery consistent like locked ice engine vehicle, ik it's adding hardware and complexity but that's why Sahara is not Rubicon ... There is so much "to like" on Rivian truly, but not the stubborn deliberate apple car play and android auto exclusion, it's shame people have to buy phone mounts for Teslas and Rivians to point of almost comically ridiculous, that is why i ran away from iphone years ago, because they went extra mile to make things difficult and proprietary for my needs
dont like the thought you need an app to drive the thing and get it in it,and those door handels cold climate if there frozen i ca see them breaking trying to get in

Impressive given those are the 22" all seasons-there is also a 20" off road wheel/tire package.
