I own a Sub no date which I bought in 1995 new paid $ 2300.- for it and I love it. Last year I was looking to purchase a Rolex sport watch. The old gmt are very expensives and they are so much things to consider you have to be an expert. I didnt want to paid 2 or more for a modern gmt and I went for the Explorer 2 in white dial even if it wasnt my first choice but it was completly different from my sub no date. From the dial color, to the date and gmt fonction also modern bracelet and rotor. I paid $ 7700.00 in the Rolex store.
I'm a huge fan of this watch. Personally, I'm torn between the polar or the black face. They both make a strong argument. And I'm totally gone over the large orange hand. It makes the watch just like the eponymous Steve Mcqueen which is also a stunner but doesn't have the tech specs of a modern piece.
Love the orange 24 hr. hand, it’s classic and a part of the history just like the steel bezel, so if they do go to ceramic I think that’ll make this piece even more desirable.
I bought the White dail 42m over black dail today from Rolex place in glasgow and l love it! l highly recommend this watch black or White dail both are awesome watches. The 42m case size perfect 👌

Cool review as expected from you guys. I've never been a fan of the Expl II. Watching your review made me appreciate it a bit more. The size at 42mm sounds perfect to me and the dial is also larger than your typical Rolex diver in which I find the dial too small and a bit cramped. This Expl II is certainly a welcome addition from that perspective. I still struggle a little bit with the bezel and the vivid orange GMT hand. I'm curious to see what Rolex are planning for the 50th anniversary in 2021. That could potentially be a very interesting piece.

I must say I wasn't really keen on this watch to begin with. You have definitely changed my mind! I love the orange hand against the crisp white dial. I think it would be nice to have a all black cerachrom bezel 🤞 Thank for sharing.
There are a few mock-up pictures on the internet showing what the Explorer 2 would look like with a cerachrom bezel. It looks like it could be a nice watch. However, it does take it far away from the original giving it a completely different vibe.

Its perfect just the way it is!!! From what i understand the only change to dimensions for the 50th anniversary is a 22mm lug to lug and obviously a wider bracelet. I have one on order fro. My AD!!! Can wait😃👍
I hope they dont do the bezel in ceramic the Exp II is iconic with its steel bezel. The orange is absolute perfection this should not be changed under any circumstances. The only thing they should change is to reduce the size back down to 40mm
Incredibly nice watch. I believe the reason why Prince Harry has one is because they are being issued to certain military personnel, most of all the special forces. His one will have a picture of an apache on the back with his military service number, a very nice touch.
Certainly not being issued by the military, he just has one and wears it regularly, probably a gift from his brother William or he bought it himself as he went to serve in Afghanistan to keep track of the time back home.
I bought this watch last year and absolutely enjoy it! It’s a solid, versatile and practical timepiece, especially for travel (which I do a lot). I prefer this to the black dial version as the polar dial has a softness to it not seen in many other watches (perhaps unlike the Grand Seiko snowflake). Excellent review of the watch - thanks!
Out of curiosity, is it just not possible to do a GMT movement with a quickset date function? I think anything other than a stainless steel bezel would kind of ruin this...it's a lot of what makes it unique and gives it its character.
it is called the prince harry, because the explorer 2 was given to british SAS soldiers, and prince harry was british army (might be SAS, idk, not sure)
great review - many thanks! this is about the only rolex i like! I'm hoping rolex release an upgrade to a ceramic fixed bezel as a colleague has this one and the bezel is a scratch magnet - he's already lost some paint.....if they can somehow fix this, i'd go for one!

thats an ugly cheap looking watch for the rolex standards. i much prefer my TAG HEUER carrera calibre 16, my Longine chronograph white dial and of course my Rolex HULK brand new march 2020 model.
@@VibrantMango the fact a watch is Rolex doesnt mean its perfect or more beautiful from watches of other brands just bcs its says rolex. Read better what i said. I own a Real beautiful Rolex I don’t go crazy because a bad looking watch says rolex like u. Propably cause u never had it on ur hands and u dont own a rolex. Check that particular Tag Heuer calibre 16 from 2009 and u will change ur mind too. On chrono24 it still holds its retail value, crazy ! 3.500 Euros 💶

I think a ceramic bezel is likely. That's why I try to get one of the old steel bezel versions while they are still available.

That's an interesting idea. Now that there is no green hand on the GMT this would pave the way for a green hand on the Explorer II. 🤔

We think a ceramic bezel would definitely modernise the Explorer II and would also give it a new character.
