  • This is a short overview of the luggage system I use when going on camping/touring/weekend/overnight trips on my V-Strom 650XT.
    As I discuss, there are pros and cons to hard luggage, and soft luggage options (many of which I don't touch upon in this video). There seem to be many people that are strong supporters of either hard or soft luggage, but as you can see, I opted to go for a mix of the two. I don't think this is something that enough people consider as an option, and in this video I explain why I chose this layout.
    Everyone has their own system/preferences, and this is just the one that I chose, and works for me.
    Let me know what luggage set up you guys use in the comments section!

    I have hard panniers and a top case too, and use the pillion seat to secure a humongous dry bag for “other stuff”. I like to take along all the “comforts” when I camp - full sized air mattress and pump, 3-man tent, decent chair, real pillow etc. Roughing it is for the birds. If the weather gets too bad I’ll find a motel.

      Thanks for watching! Sounds like you have a good system which works for you, which is most important 👍 I’ll take varying amounts of gear depending on the type of trip.

    Having all your camp gear in one bag is the best way to go. Take it off the bike and start assembling on site. Also makes breaking down camp a lot easier and quicker.

      Absolutely, that's how we do it!

    I went with full hard luggage on my Strom. But I also fitted a rack to the top box to carry a dry bag that has all my tent gear in it.

    • @N5Gunner
      @N5Gunner  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice! Sounds a little bit similar to my setup then, with your soft dry bag holding all of your tent gear, like my soft Mosko Moto bag holding all of my camp gear. There's definitely pros and cons to both, and we have to make compromises. The big thing I don't like about my hard cases, is the risk of damaging/bending the carrier racks in a fall/crash. But for most of what I do, they're the better option for me. If I did a long round-the-world (or similar) trip with a lot of dirt/off-road riding, I'd opt for all soft luggage. Thanks for the comment Colin!

    I like your mix of hard and soft for the reasons you explain. I wonder why the SWMotech panniers specifically, when there are other manuf. like Givi, Kappa, Tusk, etc? Did your Europe trips persuade you to pick this setup? I'm in the process of deciding what luggage setup to get for my Honda NC750X.

      Thanks for watching. I will forget most of the specific details/critera that had me decide to go for the SW Motech Trax ADVs, as it has been a while since I was doing my research, but in particular I was looking for side cases with the following attributes: 1) completely waterproof (believe it or not, lots of even the most reputable cases aren't actually considered fully waterproof - you will see lots of manufacturers won't describe them as being completely watertight, and/or they will recommend/supply inner waterproof liners). 2) open/fill from the top, not from the side (I've used side-opening cases before and when trying to get something from them quickly when they are full and still on the bike, it is a nightmare). 3) Finally, I wanted the "box" shape aluminum cases for their sturdiness, as well as other things which make them somewhat versatile for the motorcycle camping I do (e.g. we often use the side cases as seats at our camp, I have plans to use a piece of thin metal and make a "tabletop" that will slot into the tie down mounts on the top of the cases and turn the two of them into a little makeshift camp table surface, etc.).
      And then critically, I believe the main factor was that the SW Motechs would work with the racks I already had on the V Strom. I would have considered any of the other brands you mentioned, as long as they were a high quality, reputable brand, and offered side cases which covered all of the things I mentioned above (which I believe some/all of them do, although I do believe few of them are truly watertight).
      Thanks again for watching!

      In my first response I didn't seem to answer your question about whether the trips around Europe influenced this setup - the answer is actually no. For a trip around Europe, I would probably opt to use hard cases all around (and did so on my two major Europe/Alps trips). The hard/soft mix setup seen in this video is my go-to for most of my motorcycle camping trips on my V-Strom.
      In Europe, where I was staying in hotels/B&B's/hostels each night, the hard top case adds a lot of convenience and easy access to things during stops, and adds a bit of security where you can feel more comfortable leaving the cases locked on the bike when stopping for lunch/coffee/other in potentially busy areas. The soft Mosko Moto duffle I use on the V-Strom really adds a lot of versatility/benefit for me once I start to add a bit of off-road riding and camping into the mix. For me, I almost have a spectrum of ideal luggage setups: at one end, doing a completely on-road/no camping trip, such as my trips around Europe, I would opt for all hard cases. A mixture of off-road/on-road with camping involved, I opt for the soft/hard mixture I show in this video. For an almost entirely off-road trip on a small off-road focused bike, I would then opt for entirely soft luggage.
      I hope some of this helps your decision making process!

    Great video! I've got a 2018 650 XT in yellow too. I got it with the OEM touring panniers (the plastic ones) and am thinking of selling them to get other bigger ones, because these are just too small.
    Which engine bars / crash bars are you using? Are they Givi?

    • @N5Gunner
      @N5Gunner  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the kind comment, glad it was helpful! To be honest, I'm actually struggling to remember the manufacturer of the crash bars, and the bike is currently in storage for the winter so I can't easily check unfortunately. However, I am quite confident that they are the SW Motech crash bars, but I will try to remember to confirm and add an update here after I have the bike out if it turns out that they are a different brand. Thanks!

    Thank you for the helpful video. I also bought the cases from SW-Motech for my V-Strom. However, the widest point of the motorcycle is now in the middle (112 cm) instead of at the rear (104 cm).
    I mean the strap is not attached at a 90 degree angle. Is that the case with you too?
    Best regards
    Andreas

      @@N5Gunner My suitcases are not parallel on the carrier. They form a slight "V", with the opening at the front.
      That's why my motorcycle is 112 cm wide in the middle with the panniers and only 104 cm at the rear.
      Is that the case with you too?

    • @N5Gunner

      @@andreasjacobi2400 I see what you mean - unfortunately I won't be around my motorcycle for several weeks for me to go and check, but from what I remember, and even in the video, I believe mine are exactly the same, yes. I believe that is perfectly normal, because mine are definitely mounted correctly - I think it is due to the racks/mounts, and not necessarily due to the geometry of the cases themselves (but I could be wrong about that). Cheers!

      At 1:12 in the video there is a decent angle that seems to show how my cases do the same.

    Is it possible to mount that large case on top?

    • @N5Gunner
      @N5Gunner  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lazar, if you are asking about whether it is possible to mount either of the two hard side cases on the top/rear of the bike, then I don't believe that is possible. At least not with any pre-made existing brackets that are on the market currently, as far as I know.

      Hi Pedro, I should have included the name in the description, sorry about that. It's called Scenic. As I said in the video, I highly recommend it. It's great for many reasons, but some of the reasons I like it include: you can easily make a route from scratch on the phone app itself, many motorcycle specific functions, route tracking/info, offline maps, a one-time purchase fee for life option (no ongoing subscriptions), easy ability to import pre-planned routes, and much more. Thanks, best wishes to you too!
