My Vstrom, My Previous Bikes and Why I Ride - Suzuki Vstrom 650

- A short ride to Seacliff Beach, North Berwick in Scotland to again test/fine tune my GoPro 7 setup. I repositioned the camera and adjusted the angles, which I think makes the footage look a bit better! The commentary today is about how I got into motorcycling, all my previous bikes and my Vstrom with all additional accessories that I purchased for it. Enjoy!

The V Strom 650 is the best bike I ever rode I have a 2009 I love this bike, after 50 years of riding different bikes This is the best bike hands down!!!!
I have been riding since 1966 when my father took me down to the Yamaha dealer and I bought a "Twin Jet 100" to ride to school. Over the years
I have owned 71, (Yes 71 !) bikes from that 100cc Yamaha to the Vstrom 650 I own now.
Over the last several decades until a month ago most all the bikes I had were one liter or bigger so when I started to think about downsizing due to
just not riding that much any more. I started to research as to just what it was that I wanted in my "Last" bike.
Like many others I began to read all the glowing reviews about the Vstrom so I went down to the Suzuki dealer and check it out. When I first rode
the bike I thought it had some problems as it felt loose in it's handling, It was me, after not having ridden a smaller bike in years, and after riding in
the dealers parking lot for about half an hour I began to realize how well the 650 handled.
I have now owned the Vstrom for about two months and I cannot believe how much I like this thing. It goes down the freeway at 70mph smooth
and as easy as my older liter bikes, although not a strict dirt bike, it takes to the gravel back roads fine enough for me so far.
In short I love this bike, it is not the fastest or best handling on or off road but it is the best all around, do a little of everything, bike that in my 50+
years of motorcycling I have ever ridden! For the price in the new or used market I just do not think you can go wrong.
71 bikes!! Wow 👍🏻 it says a lot about the bike if someone with your experience decides to 'settle' on the strom! I totally agree, it's a best 'all rounder' on the market and I don't think you can get anything better for the same price! It's an absolute pleasure to ride, smooth and punchy at the same time and very comfortable. I'm planning to do a proper review at some point soon, so stay tuned. Great background...and I particularly loved it as my first bike (bought when I was 15 in 1970 was also a '66 Yamaha Twin Jet 'autolube' 100! I haven't quite managed 71 bikes...only up to about 16 but I sold my GS 1200 last summer and 'downsized' to a 2019 Suzuki Vstrom 650 XP....Like you I'm amazed at the the capability of the vstrom. What I noticed in the years leading to the purchase of the vstrom was that I was finding myself less and less interested in riding - the vstrom woke up the joy of riding again and I'm finding that I'm looking for chances to ride and grinning when I return. There are many fine bikes out there...some are truly outstanding in some specific element. For me, the vstrom brings me back to the pure pleasure of a relationship with a two-wheeled vehicle...
Thank you for your comment. Totally agree, I got bored with my previous bikes really quickly. There was always something amiss. The vstrom is the first bike I've owned that never stopped putting a smile on my face and when I'm out touring or doing a day trip, I just don't want to go back home! Great value for money, even though it does need certain bits upgraded for long distance touring and a very capable bike all round! Love it.
Paul Rose wow! I won’t tell you about the 6 bikes I have owned ;-( but I will tell you that I’m on my second Vstrom 650, and, at 67, most likely my last bike as well. Nothing that I have owned or ridden compares with the overall bang for the buck of the Vstrom.
@@matjucable I have done about the same things to my 650 that you have done. First was a center stand then case saver bars and a "Bash" plate,
the same handlebar covers like yours and like you, a box on the rear rack. The funny thing is that just about every VStrom owner I meet has done more or less the same thing ! I love riding again and that's the real joy.
Going out to the garage now to install a larger windshield and get ready for some long rides this summer. Paul in Northern California.
Enjoyed your video, love the colour of your strom. I purchased a 2017 model 650 XT new in April 2018 after owning a Boulevard for a couple of years. I have done 53,000 km now and I love the bike. Mine is black with silver trim.
I am 79 now , and started riding motorbikes in my early seventies. I never gave motorbikes any thought before that because I owned a couple of sailing boats and I flew hang gliders for 23 years.
After I stopped hang gliding I felt I needed something to replace it. Im glad I discovered motorbikes, l love riding my VStrom.
I have just finished checking my valve clearances, for the first time. Only one intake valve was in the center of the specification, the other 7 were at the very bottom of the specification range
I did a shim swap at my local dealer. The workshop manager said he would have told me they are still in specification. He agreed that I had gone this far, so I may as well continue and put the 7 valves in the middle of the specification.
Let me tell you it is a bigger job than you think, mainly because the cam chain tensioner bolts are a PIA to get to.
Anyway I completed the job successfully changing the spark plugs, air filter and coolant.
I used an excellent tutorial which was easy to follow and very thorough. You can find it on a website called circlenz.com
It is a company that hires motorbikes in New Zealand. Bit of a process to find the tutorial but it is there if you search for it. Hit me up if you can’t find it and I will help you navigate the website. I also used a Utube video called Matt tries to do things. It is a very good guide as well, used in tandem with the tutorial.
The bike is running beautifully, I have the Givi airflow windscreen, an absolute must have.
I also have an Air Hawk seat topper which is great. The V Strom 650 is a joy to own and ride.

Great video. Thanks for sharing. I have 2016 Vstrom 650 and have just reached 35,000 km. Have done many trips across eastern Australia including about 20% dirt. It’s a very comfortable, reliable, mid size, low cost, do-it-all ADV bike. Hard to beat on value for money.
Awesome! That's my thoughts exactly! The Adventure Bike Rider magazine had an article on their Facebook page about the Vstrom 650 a few days ago, worth a read! The called the strom an ultimate adventure bike!

My 2012 v-strom 650 is my fourth bike and by far my favorite. I take long trips and enjoy every minute.
They are addictive aren't they. The more I ride mine, the more I love it. And to think I only bought it because it fitted my budget at the time! Two years later and I wouldn't be without it! Ride safe buddy!
I love that fence at the end. Really like your wee too. Mine a 2015 and as much as I'd like a newer one, there's nothing wrong with mine! Truly great bikes!

Thank you! Glad you liked it! Fingers crossed for next year, as Covid has ruined a lot of our travel plans for this year too. Not much between the DL650 and Versys 650, I found that the Strom was much better value for money and (at least in comparison with the model I owned) is a lot more comfortable, a lot more economical on fuel and a lot more reliable, which is crucial on long distance tours. It's just my opinion though and based on one of the previous models of the Versys. Test ride both and make an informed decision! Good luck bud and ride safe! 👍🏻👍🏻
This bike is the best congrats, I have a 2009 and a 2019 650 V strom, after 50 years of motorcycle riding, and 85 motorcycles this is the bikes for me, I had 5 Hayabusas, 4 zx14, 5 V Maxes 20 harley's 12 hondas, etc,etc, you name it I had, But I will never part with my V strom's, I will keep those for ever.

Awesome! I'm yet to try the 1000, really curious how different it is, apart from more grunt obviously... I'm more than happy with my 650 for now. Difference in price and running costs also meant I could afford to get a second bike. Who knows though, if/when I try the 1K, things might change!
Just passed one year with my 2018 1000xt. I've had 9 bikes in the past 20 years, the vstrom is by far my favorite. Have the Givi Trekkers as well, expensive but worth it. I like how you've set yours up and will order the headlight protector now it looks great. Thanks for sharing and cheers from Florida.
Hi buddy, apologies for a late reply but somehow I didn't get a notification about your comment. I'm currently toying with the idea of getting a 1000 or the new 1050 but will need to wait until they reopen the dealerships and allow test rides again! Yep, I'm really happy with the trekker dolomitis. As you said, not the cheapest but really good bit if kit. Still a lot cheaper than the Outbacks but aluminium and top loaders as well with attachment points on lids. Can't fault them at all. The headlight guard is a good bit of kit too, you'll need to replace the 3m dual lock stickers roughly every 12 months or so, as the adhesive comes off eventually after being exposed to weather, sun, washing chemicals etc, but they're super cheap and easy to replace. I'm sure you'll be pleased with it. Ride safe!

I've spoken to quite a few people taking a leap from big BMW bikes. I think it speaks volumes about the strom. Never had one, never even ridden one but admittedly, the GS line is very impressive. Always wanted a GS since watching the LWR but having owned a vstrom for 2.5 years now, I know I absolutely don't need one! Thank you, more videos coming! 👍🏻😁👍🏻

Thanks for an informative view of your bike. Having watched just about every video on the Tube about the VStrom and finding none with a bad word to say about it, I ordered one yesterday. Like yours, the basic bike only but I’ve added extras including centre stand, chain oiler, handguards, rear hugger, Oxford hot grips and Suzuki panniers. Signed up on the VStrom Facebook page as well finding this to be full of useful tips, information and stuff for sale. Thanks again and enjoy yours.

MJX Motoblog I’ve known the dealer for 20+ years and they told me ages ago it was the bike for me, letting me test ride one. My heart has been ruling my head and about 11 or 12 bikes later, here I am, finally listening when the experts speak!!!
@@tonykehoe703 I can relate to that somehow, test rode the previous model years ago but decided to go for a different bike. Even when eventually buying this bike, it wasn't my first choice, it fitted better with my budget.... But now I genuinely love it and I'm really glad I bought it!
Greetings from Ireland..Great review of the Vstrom..I bought my first bike in 1972 when I was 16,my present bike is number 25.I,v owned Honda,s,Yamaha,s everything from step through 50cc,750 Virago to 1100 Pan European Honda,s,My present bike and my previous ... you guessed it,Vstroms 650..2008 and now 2021 XT..They are most definitely my all time favorite..PS I, nearly 66 and have toured most of Europe and have booked to go to Spain end of September to give the new bike a good run..

They're bikes no 6 and 7 I think! 8 if you count my wife's brief spell on a RV125 vanvan, as I've done more miles on it than her! Enjoy Spain, it's definitely on the list of my future bike trips!

Great summary and agree 100%. I have owned 3 GS 1200's and a GS 1250 great, yet flawed bikes. Had both major and minor faults with them and got tired of it. Had a 2004 DL650 and now have a 2023 DL650 xt which I'm chuffed to bits with. Needs a few mods to make it fit me and my requirements, but the handling and the engine are a real highlight of this very underrated bike.
Boy that motor sounds smooth. That bit of extra suspension over a sports bike was also evident in operation.
Hi there, thanks, certainly the smoothest bike I've ever owned (the NC was pretty smooth as well to be fair, it was the DCT model though). The bike is more than capable of some basic off road riding, definitely a jack of all trades!

I have just found your channel, I sat back and enjoyed it start to finish, I have a 2008 DL 650, I love my v strom and I know this bike inside and out, she is reliable, comfortable on long and short trips and the price is a fraction of some of the big fancy adventure bikes. I can’t see me ever letting my Strom go, if I am lucky I may have another 10 years riding left in me!
I do like the thought of a New V-Strom, I need to make some decisions!!

Getting more time to ride and make these videos (and more practice editing) would be great but with a full time job and bonnie Scottish weather it's not easy! The strom is a fantastic bike, isn't it! Mine was a marriage of convenience to start with but the more I used it the more I loved it! I'm also curious about the new 1050 and planning to do a test ride at some point soon (depending on work and weather) and I might even do a wee video, we'll see... I really enjoyed your video, in my opinion you captured the essence of why we ride and why it is so appealing. I'm a L twin addict also, but different bike entirely and one you'd never catch me riding on the likes of that track you took! There is definitely something about the SV650 that encourages it's riders offroad and this makes it a somewhat special bike in my opinion.
I was interested in the Givi screen after you mentioned it until I read that it's rated only to 80 mph, which would restrict my bike a bit too much for me.

I own a 2012 650 v strom and love it too, ride bikes for 25 years now and this is the best one I have owned so far, will keep riding it for a long time to come.. I wanted to take my bike to Mongolia.. covid happened..anyways I saw the next post on stormtrooper to increase your suspension travel to 7.5 inches front and rear and have some more ground clearance, yes that to me, is the only place where my beloved fails some what and the conversion its not even that expensive.. I am doing that conversion if covid ever passes and I get my job back.. so it is called Project WeeStrom 7.5 on stormtrooper..Thank the guy for his genius!
Sounds awesome! I've seen some really good off road upgrades from HRT. once you get your suspension upgraded, it certainly will be capable of anything you can throw at it. Mongolia sounds amazing, I would love to do something like that but my off roads are pretty basic to he fair... Definitely Alps again for me next year and Scandinavia at some point. Then I'll start looking at more remote places. Fingers crossed Covid will have f@#$%^ off by then, or at least the travel restrictions! Ride safe buddy!

Givi makes the BEST screen for the Strom.
I am running Touratech stainless wrap around engine crash bars with an SW Motech bash plate. I had to fabricate a connection plate to connect the bash plate to the crash bars. I am riding a Vstrom 1000 and have bounced it off big rocks on desert roads. Its solid!

I'm never surprised when someone owns a V Strom. They're fantastic do it all bikes. I've just bought a new 1000cc (and posted a review on my channel) but owned the 650 last year and love them both. Nice vid.

@@matjucable glad to hear you love your 650. I loved mine too. Decided on the 1000cc this time just for a change as I've had 3 x 650's already. They're really not all that different. Hi mate, they are awesome aren't they! I got one actually a while ago but it was catching on the centre stand when folded, so it had to go. I'm trying to find one that won't do that. I always carry a plastic puck on a bit of paracord in my tank bag for when the surface is a bit soft. Does the job! Cheers buddy, ride safe!

Great real world overview and good to see how the V-Strom is standing up to use in Scottish weather (I'm on the other side of Glasgow). Thinking of changing my two bikes (BMW R1150R and Royal Enfield 500) for a V-Strom next year, as a single do-everything bike.
Cheers buddy, glad you liked it! It's a great bike for Scottish twisties! You definitely need to at least try it. It certainly is a fantastic all rounder and will handle anything you'll throw at it bar SERIOUS off roading. I've commuted, done day trips, mild off road and toured both in Scotland and in Europe on it (2 up and fully loaded). It was more than capable and it never missed a beat. If you're thinking about a 650, You'll probably lose a bit of poke but that will only really be noticeable at higher speeds on motorway. Nothing drastic but still noticeable. The strom comes alive in the twisties though! I'm pretty sure you will, however, save yourself a lot of money on maintenance and running costs in comparison to your r1150r. Take a test ride an report back! 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks. The power drop from the BMW I can live with. I've done more miles on my Royal Enfield over the past year or so, including touring with it (solo with camping kit) up to Orkney and round the NC500. The BMW is mostly just for taking a pillion or hauling down the motorway to ferry ports on European trips now!
@@beardypete in that case you will really enjoy it. I know quite a few people, who got rid of their GSs and KTMs in favour of the wee and never looked back. Your video was one of the many that i watched a year ago, when i was looking a new bike. I got the same as this but the XA- version, spoked wheels etc. (i think the XT is the same.) Absolutely love the bike! One guestion about the centerstand, what brand was yours?

Enjoy your Bike! Got mine last week. Coming from a zx6r it is very comfortable. It lacks that.. Racing OOMPH but will handle any load and rides comfortable at 80mph

The headlight protector was bought from Ravetech (I think they are closed for business now unfortunately). It was mounted with dual-lock 3m sticky tape actually, no drilling required... not sure if these are available elsewhere 🤔

I have the yellow '19 XT, lovely bike :) I went with the suzuki touring screen and it's good for me but I am on the shorter side (5'9"). I chose the garmin 396, I liked it a bit more than the TomTom, had them both in hand and decided to send the TT back. I went for one of those mounts that you attach on the windshield screws, so the GPS stays on top of the instrument cluster, I think that's a far better solution, it's in front of your eyes all the time and with a RAM arm you can adjust it any way you want. Happy riding :)
I almost bought a yellow one. Couldn't decide between black and yellow. They had a black one in stock, ready to go at the time, so that made the decision easier!

Great vid! (I'm an American "Wallace" with Scot blood in my veins!) I have a 2017 Vstrom 650XT and it's the best bike I've ever owned for what I need. I have a dirt bike and was looking for a do-all machine. After months of research/reviews, etc. I got the Strom and have never once regretted it. I live is SW Colorado and have to ride 5 miles on gravel roads to hit pavement. Even with the stock tires I'm very happy (will soon update to either Mitas E07s or Dunlop Trailmax Missions). I'm 6'3" with a 34 inch inseam so I can easily flat foot the bike, but I did lower to the pegs and raised the seat a bit - will soon add 2 inch Pivoting Rox Risers I recently purchased so I won't be cramped when standing or sitting. Thanks again for a nice ride and a good evaluation of a great bike. - Ray (near Durango, Colorado)

Thanks! The 750 is a very capable bike but it was just a bit boring and quite frankly uncomfortable for a tourer. The 650 was a breath of fresh air. I upgraded to a 1050XT last year but had a wee break from making videos due to other commitments etc but will make a wee video on it soon! Cheers buddy!
Everybody agrees that the vstrom isn't particularly good at anything but does everything well.
But I think that's wrong.
The vstrom is really good at being a motorcycle.
I genuinely think that "bang for buck', the strom is the best motorcycle out there. You're right, it isn't the fastest or the most powerful, it isn't the most offroad oriented bike either but the balance of capabilities, comfort, reliability and affordability in terms of bike cost and maintenance costs further down the line makes it a perfect 'all round' adventure bike! I certainly love mine!
Let’s be entirely honest. Most of us ride a bike to about 50% of the bike’s capability because even cheap bikes are exceptionally good these days. The notion that the Strom, Versys and NC750 (or come to that a Guzzi V7 or Ducati Monster) are somehow inferior is utterly nonsense. They are real world globetrotters. The rider’s imagination, ambition and capability are more likely to limit these bikes’ ability than the machines. Let’s face it Austin Vince went round the world twice with his buddies on DR Suzuki’s (350 the first time and 250 the second if my memory is correct) . These guys did 40,000plus miles without support or sponsors.

Hi buddy, thanks for popping by. Glad you enjoyed the video! Yes, the decals are a suzuki original item, available from the suzuki website or any suzuki dealer. Mine were about £120, which is quite expensive but they do look nice. They do make them in yellow, yes. If you decide to purchase a set, I'd strongly advise you to get your local dealer to fit them. They are very tricky to fit and they are easily damaged during fitting, unless you're confident and have experience doing things like that obviously...

Hi Rick, I got it off Amazon. It's a Givi, the model number escapes me, as it was a while ago. If you go to givi website, you can find it by make and model of your bike. Hope it helps.

I have put on my V strom everything You have which is reassuring, apart from Heated Grips as I have three Motorbikes so bought heated Gloves even though I don't ride The Strom during the Winter. I just bought a 2007 Vstrom 650 after having several other bikes ( GS500 - SV650 - Volusia 800 - Honda Nighthawk 750 - several smaller displacement bikes ) I have not yet had the chance to ride my Vstrom other than bringing it home from 1.5 hrs away. That was a good ride though! Your bike looks much newer than mine but I have most of the extras that you have for luggage and such. I enjoyed your video!

Seen as how the quad lock case isn't available for your phone, the RAM mount is great alternative. I've used mine on my previous and current bike and it has worked great. Other option is to get one of those heavy duty aluminium phone cases from aliexpress that you screw your phone in to for like 15$ and get the universal mount.
Yes, the ram mount is an option but some of the reviews on you tube mention the rubber caps falling off/getting lost... was that something you experienced? I also looked at the metal clamp type mounts but wasn't sure how secure these would be... I'm not in a hurry, I use my satnav for navigation anyway. Will get one of the two after lockdown at some point... 👍🏻👍🏻
Bought a vstrom 1000 when they first came out in 2002 , returned to strom ownership after all these years and actually prefer the650.Fantastic bikes and I've owned Ktm bmw gs tigers etc.
There's definitely something about the strom that draws you to it, despite it's "simplicity" (if that's the right word) compared to other adventure bikes on the market. I'm test riding the new 1050 soon. Very curious, as I've never tried the 1000...
depends What you need it for.....if you're doing Lots of highway, and just little trails, the 1000cc is better, but if you're doing Mostly off-road, and not going Long distances on road, the 650 is better.

Great video sir. I've just started riding again after 42 years! and have a 2010 Suzuki DL650 v-strom which I really enjoy. Even though it's an older model, I agree they are great bikes. I want to bring it up to Scotland touring. Have you done the NC500? Can you recommend any other routes up there as it looks fantastic. Good luck and safe riding.

The beauty of vstrom, be it mk1, 2 or 3, is that it's really the same bike with some minor changes, mostly cosmetic. It's a great bike and you'll enjoy it for years to come!
Yes, I've done the NC500, it's fantastic. I'd recommend doing it counter clockwise. The stretch between Inverness and John o'Groats isn't the most exciting and can be done relatively quickly on day one. Only a couple of points of interest there. The real fun starts after that...
Other great routes in Scotland? I do like island hopping in general and it's even better on a bike. Do the Hebridean Way on Outer Hebrides. I'm doing it again this year, so there will be some vlogs from it. Skye is amazing and if one particular stretch of road needs mentioned is the stretch between Tundrum and Glencoe. It's absolutely amazing!

I'm 68 years old, been riding for 54 years, on road off road, street racing, drag racing, have owned at least 30 on off's over all the years, I had 4 KLP650's, a XT550 Yamaha, Honda 650r, Suzuki 70 Suzuki dr650 and more. I just recently found a 2008 yellow V storm 650.I got a steal of the bike but it needed work, mostly just maintenance update. I decided to take a ride in the desert where I live, last bike in the desert being a KLR. I knew the shocks were leaky and bad, I knew the front tire was worn. I had just put a Shinko 805 on the rear, great tire. But what a scary ride it was, should of waited to get the stuff fixed first. It came with sprockets 49t/16t, way to high geared for off road, so no low gear when I needed it most on the dirt. I must say on pavement it would cruise at 85 without breathing hard. So now I have rebuilt the forks with progressive shocks and 10wt Motul, new front tire coming, new gears coming. So when all this is done, I'll see if it does better off road. I think it will, but it's not really a dirt bike as much as a KLR for instance. But now days I ride on pretty tame dirt roads.
Wow, very impressive array of bikes and riding experience! You're right, stock DL isn't made for proper offroad but with upgrades it'll be capable of anything I'm sure! Let me know how you get on, I'm curious now!

Enjoyed your video. I have a 2019, 650 Vstrom which is my third Vstrom. This one has traction control which is nice although I haven’t put it to the test yet. The only improvement that I suggest Suzuki should do is to put self cancelling signal lights on them. Other then that I really don’t have any complaints. My wife and I went on a three week road trip on my 2012 in the northwest part of the US, the bike did great on the mountain roads with lots of power and we had no problems what’s so ever. That is until we hit a deer on the highway at 50 mph, but that’s another story and that’s why I’m driving my current bike. Like you said, it’s a great bike.
Hi there, thank you, glad you liked it! For me it's the cruise control that's missing. Like you, we did a 3 week tour in 2019 but in Europe and the bike performed flawlessly, two up and luggage. Oy thing I missed was the cruise control on German Autobahns!

I've been looking at that exact same headlight guard online and wondered how the adhesive mounts would hold up over time, getting caught out in popup showers, etc. How long have you had it on your V-strom?
I've had it on for about a year and replaced the adhesive mounts once, recently. The dual lock bits are very sturdy but the adhesive on one of the mounts gave in and detached from the headlight eventually. I simply bought a set of 3M Dual Lock on Amazon, cut them to required size and replaced all 4 just in case. I suspect the one that came off was not properly attached in the first place and the adhesive gave in due to water ingress when washing the bike. So it was my mistake in the first place I guess. I would still recommend it. The ease of taking it off for cleaning comparing to a screw on setup makes it really good. As I said when attached, it's really sturdy and will give the headlight the same protection. And even if I have to replace the dual lock attachments again, it is so easy and cheap (have lots left over now) that it's not an issue at all. Hope this helps buddy!

The headlight guard is mounted with a dual lock adhesives, it works like a heavy duty velcro. You just pull it off then put it back on.
Had one for 9 years, sold it to pay my Patent costs. Got a loan of my brothers a XRV750 2093, but I'm still miss my V-Strom.
Never too late to get one again! 9 years indicates it was the first generation! They did look good. Try the new model at some point, I wonder if there's much difference in them apart from cosmetic changes...

@@nigelren3719 yes, there is a lot of adjustment in it. Mine is mounted on the middle setting (the inside part) so it can go up and down here if required. The outside screen slides up and down and locks in place with clamps that are easy to operate. You can even adjust it with one hand when riding, obviously with care and at reasonable speed. There is about 6 inch movement here to suit a broad range of rider heights. It does offer great protection from wind, even at the lowest setting. There is a gap between two screens designed to let 'clean' air through without causing any buffering or turbulence. It really is a great design. Not to everyone's taste but I really like the look of it.

I bought a '17 DL 650 and in the last 3 years, I've put almost 30,000 trouble free miles on it. Of over 25 bikes in the past, I have to say , this is one of my favorites. I've had big inline and V4 sportbikes , a GS 1200 bike from hell and bunch of others. And , regardless what others say, it,s a cool looking bike. Maybe the gen 1 650's were a little homely, but this is handsome in a mature way. Yesterday, I went to see a '21 XT 1050. I don't see why everyone is so enamored with it's looks. The fingernail polish orange looks nice, but would grow old. Last year I saw a new 2019 650 Xt adventure with sidecases for $ 7500 usd. in metallic red. Alot of bike for so little. Try one,you'll like it!
It's always good to hear from people who had so many bikes, especially the big GS owners, who had bought a vstrom and enjoy it. I'm curious how your GS was a bike from hell now! I love my strom but I am a bit curious about the 1000/1050. I think I'll book a test ride soon. I don't mind the looks, I think it looks really good. Not better than the previous version, just different... I think the colour schemes aren't great but with some nice decals you can make a huge difference!
@@matjucable I'm another long-term rider who has 'down graded' from a bmw 1200gsa to a Wee. The GS is fabulous bike in many respects especially for long distance touring but for me the it was just too heavy especially in urban environments and when off-roading. The Wee on the other hand is revalation...almost a case of 'less is more'. It’s relatively lightweight, comfortable, has an engaging engine that is smooth and pulls from low in the rev-range. It handles very well on and off road and makes a great commuter and tourer (one up). Yes, sometimes I wish it had a few extra ponies and longer suspension travel but for the most part it delivers what is asked of it. Also has great fuel economy and reliability making it very cheap to own. Good vid...many thanks.

Thank you, glad you liked the video! I couldn't recommend the strom enough, it really is a perfect all rounder. As you can tell I absolutely love mine. Carry pillion regularly and toured Europe two up and fully loaded. Only really notice the difference, when heavy loaded with personal and camping kit and two up at the same time. Bike loses a bit of poke in higher gears/speed. Nothing major though. You will still comfortably travel at motorway speed, it'll just be a tiny bit slower to speed up to, say 80 ;), to overtake someone, if you know what I mean... No real difference with just a pillion or just luggage in my experience. Hope this helps buddy. Ride safe!

@@petebuxey1190 I can definitely recommend the givi one. Fits over the factory suzuki chainguard so you don't need to remove it.
I've got a 2012 650 Vstrom and I love the bike. I may get a Goldwing someday for the wife, but for now she likes riding with me on the Suzuki. I like your video, but getting a little mud on an ADV bike is like a badge of honor. So don't apologize for your beautiful bike being a little dirty. Great scenery too, especially at the end.

Owned my 2012 VStrom 650 since June 2012. 8 years later, I have a hard time thinking about trying something/anything new. Added a shorter factory seat (1”) shorter and with a 29” inseam, life is grand. I love this bike. I love looking at it and the idea of customizing it with accessories to my taste/budget/feelings is more appealing. I’ve always dreamed of a F6B Goldwing but 1800 cc’s is quite a jump from my humble 650 VStrom. Hahahahaha Besides, the odd dirt road never hurts to add some perspective. After 21,000 Km, I just swapped out the Bridgestone Trail Wing(s) for a set of Shinko 705’s (advertised as 70/30 or 80/20 tires). All the Best!!

I also have a Tatra Heroes sticker on my top box! We rode through Zakopane and southern Poland last year on our way back from the Alps trip!

Takes a while to learn to use it but once you get your head round it, it's fairly quick. The Gopro is awesome, although not great on battery life, so you'll need spares, which arent too expensive...

Just like to pass along the mods I did on the 650. Center stand, brush hand guards, skid plate, engine guards, rear Givi box but my own mount, a usb charge
port and cigar plug in the 1/4 fairing, larger windshield, (Shield not screen my Brit brothers) and a small pad on the side stand.

Hi there, thank you. The rear hugger is from GIVI. I went for this one as it works with the stock chain guard (A lot of other makes are a hugger/chain guard combo and require the stock chain guard to be removed)... it works well and I'd definitely recommend it!

I keep all my repair stuff under the seat,including a electric air pump and tire and chain repair kit plus enough tools to pretty much disassemble the entire bike!lol
Good drills! My mechanical knowledge is unfortunately limited, so apart from the standard tool kit, I only carry a puncture repair kit and electric tyre inflator... I carry these in my top box/panniers as under-seat storage is quite small on gen 3... 👍
I'm torn between nc750x and vstrom 650, and I have precisely the same feeling. Honda is reliable, good on fuel, but I have a strange feeling that something is missing in this bike to make me completely happy about it. I can't put it in words better. one thing I like about Honda better, though, is easy access to valves.
The nc is a very capable bike but the novelty wore off quickly for me. After a while I found it too 'plasticky' and the engine quite boring frankly. Long distance touring is my thing and the nc also turned out to be very uncomfortable. The stock seat on it must have been designed by a sadist! You only start noticing this when it's too late! Anything up to an hour in the saddle, was fine, over that was agony. An I'm not one of the sensitive butt kind! Travelled over 700 miles on my 650 in one day once and never had any issues! Lastly, the range. The bike is good on fuel but not a big difference between it and the strom. Where you notice the massive difference is the range. Its absolutely laughable on the nc, given that they marketed it as an adventure bike! 12 or 13 ltrs is fine if you're commuting but not enough for touring. This is a massive shortcoming of the bike in my opinion and for the sake of a wee storage space where the tank normally is? My advice as always is test ride both but take them out for as long as you can. See what you prefer and think what you'll use the bike for. Strom any day of the week for me! But you already knew that 🤣

Nice bike! I've got the 2018 Vstrom standard, added givi top case, engine guard, hand guards(bark busters), and center stand. Was curious what type of tires you have. Safe riding.
Thank you! If you do a lot of miles and ride in all weathers, invest in a fender extender and a rear hugger. I cannot recommend these two items enough. Everything else is optional but these two things will protect your bike! The tyres are Metzeler Tourance (standard tourance - not Tourance Next). Tyres are a touchy subject and very much a personal choice but I would highly recommend these.

Hi Roni, I've recently bought Motoz Tractionators GPS tyres for my 19 Wee XT and they have transformed the bike when riding off-road! Good grip and very stable on wet and dry gravel roads. Good on the bitumen also though obviously not as assured as dedicated road tyres. They should be long lasting too...not uncommon to get 20000kms from them!

I cant believe you actually traded in a versys for an NC700, i got a loan of a Honda nc700 when my versys 650 was in for a service and absolutely hated it. You had barely got the revs up and rev limiter kicked in, the Versys on the other hand was a bike that needed revving and was miles better than the homda.
I currentl have a gsx1250, but am considering downsizing to a 650 and have been looking at a versys 650 or a v strom 650, so thanks for the review
The NC750X was admittedly a huge mistake. There were a lot of reasons for swapping the bikes, which I didnt want to get into, as the video was long enough as it was. I had nothing but issues with my Versys, as much, as I liked it, and as I used it for commuting at the time, I found it to be quite a thirsty little beast. I think I mentioned it in the video, I also didn't find it comfortable. I took the 750 for a test ride and lack of power, in comparison to the Versys was evident. I did not have the rev limiter problem as I went for the DCT version (mainly because of the manual version rev range). It was otherwise a lot more comfortable, practical, very economical and reliable machine. Most of all, I wanted to start touring, which was the main reason for me getting into motorcycling in the first place. I got a cracking deal at my local dealer, which made the swap seem a great idea lot more. Long story short (and I'm not slagging any NC owners here), I found the NC really bland and characterless and as a result, I got bored with it really quickly. Then I bought the Strom, which was a lot more fun to ride, a lot like the Versys actually, and was perfect for anything else like commuting and especially touring. The rest is history. I'm a massive fan of the Strom now obviously. Can't comment on the new Versys but the strom is a far superior machine to my then '09 Versys 650. Again, each to their own. It's just my personal experience/preference. Try both before you commit and think what you will use the bike for.
Picking up my vstrom 650 next week! Can't wait, how do you find the power compared to the NC? I've had an NC700s in the past. Great video!
Hi there, thank you, glad you enjoyed it! I saw your post on SVOUK page! The black / gold xt, nice one. You will love it! The NC750 is about 54bhp compared to Vstrom's 68bhp. Not a massive difference there in terms of power but the real difference is in how the power is delivered. The NC has what is effectively a modified car engine with a very linear power delivery. The Strom is a lot more fun to ride, it's punchy, yet almost as economical as the NC, when ridden 'conservatively'. It's a bit more capable off road, a lot more comfortable (the stock seat on the nc is attrocious) and is better value for money than the NC (i.e. rear luggage rack, 12v socket, better stock tyres, better stock screen plus a few more things as standard)... and, one of the most obvious things, Strom looks better! Each to their own though, the NC has it's place on the market and has quite a following. The DCT is a big selling point.
@@matjucable yes that was me, the black gold one. Yea the NC engine is half a jazz engine isn't it. Thanks for the reply too, I'm coming straight off a sportster 1200 so used to the v twin torque, though I expect the strom to be a lot more refined. Can't wait to get out on it!
A lot more refined, a lot more nimble, reliable and addictive. You will definitely enjoy it, especially, if you plan touring on it!
