In health and medicine, we must always be willing to look deeper. We can’t give up on looking for healing solutions just because we’ve always been told a disease is progressive and incurable.
That’s one of the many reasons I’m so inspired by today’s guest on The Dhru Purohit Podcast. Dr. Terry Wahls received a diagnosis of secondary progressive multiple sclerosis and, instead of accepting a rapid decline in her function and quality of life, dove headfirst into looking for answers with long-lasting results. Dr. Wahls didn’t buy into the limits defined by her diagnosis and has completely changed the future of MS research and treatment options in the process.
Dr. Terry Wahls is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner and a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Iowa where she conducts clinical trials. In 2018, she was awarded the Institute for Functional Medicine’s Linus Pauling Award for her contributions in research, clinical care, and patient advocacy.
Dr. Wahls was confined to a tilt-recline wheelchair for four years. She restored her health using a diet and lifestyle program she designed specifically for her brain and now pedals her bike to work each day. She is the author of The Wahls Protocol: A Radical New Way to Treat All Chronic Autoimmune Conditions Using Paleo Principles, and the cookbook The Wahls Protocol Cooking for Life.
In this episode, we dive into:
    - Dr. Wahls’ story of being diagnosed with MS and how her transformation happened (1:30)
    - How conventional medicine looks at health and disease vs. Functional Medicine (10:01)
    - How to uncover the root cause of an autoimmune condition (16:48)
    - The role toxin exposure plays when it comes to autoimmune conditions (28:17)
    - Signs that an autoimmune condition is brewing (32:54)
    - The first thing to think about when addressing an autoimmune condition (35:01)
    - How eating 9+ cups of vegetables a day had a huge role in turning around Dr. Wahls’ health (45:26)
    - The healing benefits of organ meats (53:39)
    - Practical ways to increase vegetable consumption (1:03:27)
    - What role anti-nutrients might play when it comes to autoimmune conditions (1:05:56)
    - What Dr. Wahls’ diet looks like on a daily basis (1:10:04)
    - The power of movement when it comes to healing an autoimmune condition (1:16:59)
    - Figuring out your why as you begin your healing journey (1:26:57)

They honestly don’t. They’re not trained to do anything but these 3 things: 1. Prescribe medicine 2. Perform surgery 3. Refer you elsewhere. When these things don’t work they say your condition is incurable. I was diagnosed in 2021, and I’ve seen many doctors. Not ONE of them has ever asked me what I’m eating. Not ONE of them has tested me for food sensitivities. They act as if diet doesn’t matter.

We who studied Westren medicine which is great to treat or manage diseases .we were not taught to treat causes of metabolic disorders only causes of some infections. So we have to understand medical teaching, regulations and who control it. Medical doctors are victims like others and doing medicine is a very stressful depressing job to deal with the sick 24/7 . It is the system who does not invest in health and prevention services. More money is from sickness and charging for it.We are all responsible and connected, no time to waste as most people I look at are inflamed ,diabetic, with mental illnesses. Diabetes no one check fasting Insulin hormone, high blood sugar , less healthy brain cells. My conclusions and opinion. Depends on the self.

5 Autoimmune diseases here. I have graft vs host disease which is my entire immune attacking my entire body due to it rejecting my 2nd bone marrow donor. I also have scleroderma where my entire body turned hard as stone and I laid in a bed unable to move anything but my head for 5 yrs. I went down to 70 pounds and lost tremendous muscle atrophy. I also have Hashimoto’s, Raynaud’s syndrome and Sjogren’s disease. A very close friend started making me bone broth in her kitchen and letting it cook for 24-72 hours and I started drinking 32 oz a day and also started eating more vegetables. Doctors told me I had maybe 3 yrs and I would never get out of bed or walk again. Well 3 yrs of eating good food and drinking bone broth I’m out of bed and I can now walk! I still have area that are hardened and have contractions. I also still can’t stand straight up but I CAN AT LEAST WALK. I felt like I drank cement and it hardened inside me for 5yrs. I had tremendous anxiety because I felt trapped inside my body and would give anything if I could just change my position. Worse than someone who is paralyzed because I could feel everything. Plus I was in so much pain. Just my clothing touching my skin excruciating. I have so many goals Im determined to reach! I’m going to now incorporate some of her protocol s and hopefully it helps me even more. My doctors looked like they saw a ghost when I did a surprise visit to the hospital one day. They hadn’t seen me for many yrs because I couldn’t even get to the hospital anymore because you couldn’t put me in the car. I was like a piece of wood. I would need a vehicle with a bed and then be wheeled in on a gurney. The doctors were in shock…” they all started taking notes asking me what I was eating and doing” they were in shock and couldn’t believe I wasn’t doing any medical protocol.

      Deficiency in vitamin D
Deficiency in vitamin A ( Retynol, NOT Retynil palmitate ).
      Eat vitamin A & D rich foods.
Allways use organic food if possible.
Increased copper and decreased zink was observed in patients with psoriasis.
So not enough zink could be a cause too.
      Milk can also cause psoriasis.
Wheat, pasta, cereals, grains, because there are anti- nutrients in it who block other vitamins/minerals to get absorbed by the body. Can create celeac disease too.

I was just diagnosed with an autoimmune disease last week. Im 46 and have RA and Osteoarthritis. bone on bone in my hips, been living in pain for years, because i didnt have insurance and honestly just thought i was stiff from walking alot at work etc. Fast forward to the last few years the pain became worse and i made it in to a specialist, and was diagnosed. Im actually waiting on the rhumatologist to come back with the regiment of meds ie Humira etc."poisons" that they believe will be best for me. Immediately, i decided to fix this on my own, because i KNOW the body is build to repair itself under the right circumstances. About 1hr into my research, i found your video and many questions were answered and I now know exactly how im going to attack this, and win! Thank you for this video and thanks to Dr Wahls for all her work and devotion to this research.

Hi Wayne, what is PEA and tocotrienols. With the fasts, did you eat anything?

    • @smileclick
      @smileclick 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

@@zackpsych1974 Tocorienols are a special type of vitamin E, PEA stands for Palmitoylethanolamide. The first 3 day fast I only drank different teas (lemon ginger in the morning, decaf green tea, turmeric, and stinging nettle whenever I felt hungry). The second fast I also ate either a single finger sized cucumber or a few pistachios, in place of a meal, as well as the teas (so I encouraged the dominance of good gut bacteria, rather than kill them all off at the same time with no food). I took (and am still taking) PEA400 morning and night, as does my 88yo mother who now has much better memory than me. We both have a one main meal (breakfast or lunch) with lots of veges and some non-red meat, and don’t eat anything after around 4pm. The aim is to minimise inflammation. We also take astaxanthin.

Look into the Root Cause Protocol. It will.explain some key mechanisms. It is free, and I bet there is huge overlap, but maybe some optimizable differences.
Synergies the RCP, Wahls, Zone Diet, and broccoli sprouts (cleans iron out of the liver and promotes regeneration), and I think some pretty amazing things might just be possible.
I believe oxidative stress and NLRP3 triggering, both induced by metallic iron filing overload, play a key role in insomnia. I don't think they are separate.
get that bio-copper up (copper rich foods raised according to natural law,, retinol, sunshine and magnesium), get that iron overload down, including blood donation, avoid those blue blood blockers (HFCS, glyphosate, hormone D, zinc, ascorbic acid, low fat diet, NPK fertilizer, and stress from any source), and see what happens.

My daughter was first bedridden (6 yrs.), at which point I presented with CFIDS (4 yrs bedridden) and a year later my son came down with it. For many, autoimmune will lead to RA .. when in RA doc may put you in DMAT to 'control the pain and inflamation'. BECAREFUL if your body puts on weight, sudden pain in stomach or other parts or foamy urine, blood in urine etc... Always always always always go for frequent FULL Cancer screening when you are in DMAT! I knew a few who had Autoimmune leading to RA and asked to take DMAT and end up with late stage cancer in next two years. Take autoimmune very very very seriously please! Don't assume it's another chronic disease with no side effects... God bless and take good care.

Not many people talk about heavy metals/ toxins in the environment/ food.. ms is an autoimmune disease.. your immune system wouldnt attack itself for no reason. It could be trying to react to something like mercury, arsenic, lead etc... this is a very tricky area.. if you bring it up to a dr, they wont even test you 90% of the time.. I requested it and they said my arsenic levels were super high.
Regular range was something like 1-50 and mine was close to 100. I was eating (UNRINSED) Rice daily for years. Rice, even if rinsed, absorbs arsenic from the ground.. and I was cooking it without rinsing it off first... I cut it out of my diet and havent eaten it for the past year but my Ms-like symptoms are still here. Despite the followup arsenic test showing it went way down only like a month later. But even if your blood levels are down.. these metals store in your bones, organs and brain if you have been having consistent exposure.. So I have to somehow safely remove in from my body which some say is not really possible from chronic exposure.. But you have to believe. Alpha lipoic acid is supposed to be able to help protect and repair myelin on the nerves and remove heavy metals from the body. Even passing the blood brain barrier which many things cant.. Though My mris and ct scans showed no lesions to confirm an Ms diagnosis.. I feel like my body is experiencing something like that. Its not normal to have burning pain in the face and forehead, dizziness, trouble focusing and thinking for 1 year straight.. some days are better than others but It hasnt gone anywhere.

    • @bastian6173
      @bastian6173 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I would not worry so much about heavy metals and arsenic... Asians eat almost only rice and they rarely develop these kinds of conditions.
I would much rather look at stress and relaxation... When we are stressed our guts are tensed up and that's when all the toxic stuff gets into the body.
It's a lifestyle thing. We're meant to be active but then rest deeply. Nothing against mr whals but just look under her eyes. She is TIRED as f... You can even hear it in her voice. She is very tense.
I know when my legs are weak or when something is going on down there, it is because my brain is TIRED.
We are not resting anymore. This is the root of our health issues.

    • @missafy7397

Focus on fixing your microbiom, (add mushrooms) eating clean, nutrient rich green, add animal organs such as liver ( try liver capsules if you hate liver), and get rid of all toxins and additives possible. Go 100% organic! Remove gluten, dairy, high fructose corn syrup, msg, simple sugars, seed oil, and vegetable oil, and use glass not plastic and stop using tephlon That's a starting point to work with. Yes, it's difficult, but there is no magic pill or potion. If you want change, you need to make change.
Also, use activated charcoal when you eat fish to prevent mercury toxicity and to help pull other toxins out of your gut as your new diet begins releasing them, especially if you use any detox products. Never detox, while constipated, or you will release stored toxins into the gut. Constipation will block them, and your gut will re-absorb them. The re-absobtion is harder on you than actually leaving them there. So be sure your gut is clear to empty out when you detox.
Exercise, even if you can only move your arms. Imcorporate deep breathing exercises because EVERYTHING in the mitochondria functions requires oxygen to heal. Your longevity is dictated by how well your body receives and uses oxygen.
This is a permanent life change. If you want change, it's up to you. It's not your fault, but it is your problem. I know, I have MS, I've had my thyroid removed for thyroid cancer, and I had skin cancer. I suffer from malabsorption. I've had my gull bladder removed, a hernia mesh surgery. I have 5 kids (3 were C-Sections) and get back spasms from whip lash caused by an auto accident. I struggle, too. I know it's hard. But, I take thyroid hormone because I have no thyroid. Other than that, all I take is vitamins, no drugs except for a rare Doans for extreme back spasms. We can do this. I believe in you!!! God Bless you. 🫂

She started by adding some vitamins. Then got discouraged and quit taking them. Then got worse, so she started taking them again and it slowed the progress of the MS at least. Then she researched and realized there were micro nutrients in the foods those vitamins came from so she changed her diet. She got rid of foods that caused her inflammation, and started eating lots of greens, and healthy meat, plus other veggies. Sleep, meditation, and exercise are important too.

From what I'm understanding Dr Wahl's was eating a very unhealthy vegetarian diet, therefore no fruits and vegetables and mostly processed foods. It makes sense that when she switched to a healthy paleo diet with 9 cups of vegetables a day, it was a huge change. I can understand how that would have helped her heal from MS. But there are people like myself who are already eating a very clean, healthy diet, (gluten, dairy free, lots of fruits/veggies) but are still sick. For us I don't see the diet being able to heal us since it hasn't already. I think her program addresses people who are eating a terrible diet. So then the question is what can people like me do to heal?

Do you think you might be someone who would benefit from a completely different diet? A carnivore or keto or keto adjacent diet for example?
It's really interesting how we can find on this channel and on similar channels diametrically opposed approaches. One approach says no eggs, no dairy, minimal meat eat lots of complex carbohydrates from fruits and vegetables.
The other approach says these things are not ideal, we should instead eat grass-fed meat, pasture raised eggs, grass-fed dairy, butter, ghee and stay away from most vegetables and fruit.
I think there are people who benefit from both approaches and those who benefit from one but not the other. I wish this channel or other similar channels would go into the question of which approach is best and how can we determine for ourselves which approach is best for us. I guess we experiment on ourselves, we try the first approach and if it doesn't work we try the second.
Both agree that added sugars, processed vegetable seed oils and processed food in general are very bad. We all agree on that but beyond that is the correct approach to keep carbohydrates low and do a clean keto or clean keto adjacent diet or is it best to keep meat, eggs and dairy to a minimum and eat lots of vegetables.
Dr Robert Lustig says feed the gut, protect the liver and you can do that with either approach. This matters a lot to me because I have sustained a tremendous amount of trauma and I want some of those years back, knowing which diet is correct is very important and like you, I don't know which approach is the right one. It's impossible to get this information from our mainstream medical providers because they are here to prescribe medications and most of them haven't learned anything about nutrition.
People like Dr Ken Berry will tell you that there is one correct diet for humans and that diet is closer to carnivore for him. I don't think that's right for everyone. It would be ideal to find providers who can analyze an individual's unique system, their microbiome, their genetics, what they've gone through and based on that determine which diet is correct for that person.

Some people, my girlfriend of 5 years particularly, develop inflammation responses to foods that they eat to much of for an extended period of time. For instance, she developed a intolerance to gluten and would become itchy if she ate any gluten, or if there were even trace amounts in food. After avoiding gluten for a couple of year she could eat it again without triggering an inflammatory response. This will happen with a lot of things if she over does it every day for an extended period of time. I, myself, mostly do not have that problem. You can check your inflammatory response with a MRT, or ALCAT, test that will show items that have a inflammatory response. I have MS and recently did a MRT test and found that I have a response to rice, chicken, peas and a few other items. When I cut out these items I had more energy and was no longer had sluggish parts of the day. I have learned that foods that make you tired are not agreeing with your body and should be eliminated from your diet, at least for a set amount of time. After a set amount of time you can gradually reintroduce them and no longer have an inflammatory response.
If you have MS you need to do a MRT test, which is said to be more accurate, but can only test up to 170 items, or take a ALCAT test which tests up 400 items. Reducing inflammation is a key factor to dealing with MS and I also add anti inflammatory foods/supplements. I do follow Wahls level 1 100% of the time, level 2 a lot of the time and level 3 part periodically.
