One of the strengths of British comedy writing is that it's usually written by one or two people, rather than a writer's room that US shows tend to use. This helps keep characters tight and consistent. On the flip side, when it's one writer on their own, they can get an idea and run with it, and there's no-one else to tell them that maybe it's run its course, as we see with Kryten dissing Kris all the time. If they were still a writing pair, the joke would not have run as long as it did.
Regarding the Fahrenheit and Celsius question; the UK was very messed up with which scale we used back then. Even TV weather forecasts used to display warm temperatures in Fahrenheit and cold temperatures in Celsius 😂

Like I said in the previous video: Kryten and Kaskinski have the best dynamic. He is afraid to lose his "brother" to the new girl but she is not intrested in taking his role. She tries to sofisticate the guys though with hilarious results. Like in the game night scene and more to come.
Ahh! This is THE one!! The one I waited the whole show for you to get to!! "Tikka To Ride" "Stoke Me A Clipper" and this one! But especially this one!!! YES!!!
A lot of brits (not sure about other europeans) will use Fahrenheit when it's hot, because it's a bigger number, and Celsius when it's cold because it's a lower number.
Great episode, gals. That song will haunt you for the rest of your lives. Just wait for Jane Austin World in the next episode. I'm sure you gals will love it. Especially the "come on boy" scene. Kloe looked like she was really joying herself
It’s Rimmer’s world, we just live in it. The Arnold Rimmer Song is the ultimate highlight of this entire series. (If you’re interested, there is a 10 hour TH-cam video of it somewhere….and yes, I’ve watched it). The fact that Kryten gets all pissy with Kochanski is to demonstrate how far he has come in his programme breaking that he is even capable of Jealousy. Never been a great fan of series 7, but it does have its supreme moments.
We only adopted Celsius in the 80s; things like weather forecasts were still given in both units well into the 90s. It's definitely possible the actors/writers were happier with Fahrenheit back in '97
I always guessed Fahrenheit was used because of the future setting, society potentially being more Americanised hence the currency being Dollarpounds. Generally though in UK we flit quite happily between the different modes of measurement Celsius/Fahrenheit, miles/km, lbs/kg. 92f as a bigger number gets the point across that it’s uncomfortably hot better than 33c
Great video ladies. That song will haunt you for the rest of your life. as always look forwards to your next dwarf video, you won't be disappointed. At least sick bags aren't needed.
In the 90s, a lot of weather forecasts used both centigrade and farenheight since on temperature, the UK was still 'transitioning' from one to the other. The writer was probably just... Still used to Farenheight. And I have been looking forward to seeing your response to the Arnold Rimmer Experience since I discovered your channel, and you did not disappoint.
Did anyone see Robert Llewellyn's (Kryten) livestream yesterday? He said that the cast are all locked in for more eps, but not a full series. They are hoping to shoot later this year! 🎉
Cat doesn't want to be the most attractive person around, he knows he already IS the best looking. Kris isn't competition to him, she's just a new admirer. Plus he's not in any way attracted to Dave. I mean think back to the first Gelf episode where his perfect mate was none other than himself.
You're kind of seeing the problem with the dynamic and the big Rimmer-shaped hole. Rimmer was uptight, snooty, cowardly, and full of himself despite having nothing to justify that arrogance and thus it was funny seeing him get taken down a peg. He was the butt monkey, but consequently we understood WHY he was like this so when he had genuine moments of humanity or triumph we were happy it happened while also understanding why everyone else still insulted him. Kochanski, however, while being more sophisticated... is not a shithead. She's competent and human and the universe crapping on her just feels sad. She's not a misfit like the others and it doesn't gel with the rest of the team dynamics. I think she COULD have worked, but they needed more time to figure out what her personality archetype is that gives her a central flaw that makes her slot in with Rimmer gone. Maybe if she had been more LIKE Rimmer in her reality, thus we'd have a Kochanski who really was unrecognizable to Dave's idealized version (thus he's repulsed by her instead of wanting to impress her) but still works with the barbs thrown by Cat and the dominance over Kryten. Sure, you could argue "Well, we're just replacing one Rimmer with another," but the lack of Rimmer is already hurting the show and the Rimmer stuff in this one elevates it and is the funniest material.
We've used farenheit in the UK since it was invented before the American Revolution, celsius, invented 18 years after, was not adopted by the UK until the 1960s. Weather forecasts are still given in both scales, and newspaper articles on weather extremes are given in farenheit if it's hot and celsius if it's cold.
I’ve heard that while most countries have adopted the metric system for most things, Fahrenheit is still often used when talking about temperature as it pertains to human comfort.
As an englishman I can confirm that we love to whinge about the weather. So when it's cold we'll use the smaller number like -5 C then when it's hot suddenly everyone reverts back to 1958 and farenheit because 'It's almost 100!'
Back in the 90s, the UK was still using a lot of imperial measurements. There was a joke that when it was hot they'd use Fahrenheit and when it was cold they'd use Celsius. Bigger numbers in Fahrenheit made it sound hotter, smaller numbers in Celsius made it sound colder. To this day, the UK uses mixed metric and imperial measurements, despite ridiculing nations like the US for still using imperial. Personally, I feel that the people ridiculing others for using imperial have no leg to stand on unless they adopt metric time (which is a thing).
@@KatAlysha I had a feeling I might run into some inaccuracies when writing this Although when you spend almost 20 minutes trying to think of lines to rhyme with Paula you have to take a leap of faith
Love this episode! The kiss between Lister and Rimmer is incredible and definitely pushed for more Lister×Rimmer shippers. I had heard somewhere that the take was even longer than it was in the episode, but I can't remember where, potentially the making of or commentaries. The Rimmer Song is so great! I love how goofy and funny it is!
The fact that Craig and Chris infamously didn't get along for the first few series' make the payoff all the better 😄 This would have been around the time they would have finally become good friends. What better way to show it. It's just a shame they decided to undo it all at the end. It would have made series 8 much more interesting. S1 Rimmer meets a future version of Lister who is in love with him.
They use Fahrenheit for the same reason as they use Espranto and Dollar Pounds. And even if you don't like Kryten being jealous of Kochanski - that "hold me back" over the salad cream is great. This series suffers from lack of Chris Barrie and stumbles over the new dynamics Kochanski introduces - but there is still some good stuff in here.
A bit of probably trivial information; Chris Barrie was at this point making Series 6 and 7 of Brittas Empire 1 to 5 was in the can. Ironically the original writers of Brittas Empire quit the show after series 5, both of them quit, and new writers brought in, and it wasn't that good anymore and ended. I do like series 7 onwards of RD with only Doug Naylor writing mainly, but series 6 and 7 of Brittas is poor IMO.
I think the kat. Is obsessed with himself and dumb , and rimmer was always the object of listers torments as was rimmer to lister now kryton can see the relationship between Kris and Dave is more threatening, perhaps due to being alone so long when they first met him and his more human behavior is causing him to act like a teenager lol.
As a Brit, I've never seen anyone use F in media or in real life, ever, so I doubt that. Perhaps that was a thing before 2000 but it's certainly not now
If anything, I'd have liked to see them ramp up the conflict between Kris & Kryten from silly to absolutely preposterous levels - would be fun to watch, and I'm guessing it would have made it that much easier to integrate her character
27-odd years ago I, being the nerd I am, bought a (second hand) computer capable of - can you even imagine it?! - recording video! You could plug a device like a VCR into the computer and digitise the signal into a video file. This was breaking edge stuff, especially for a 19 year old. There were 2 pieces of video that were the very first things that I captured... The Fourth Doctor's final scene... And The Rimmer Experience song. :) I think we all "felt" what was going to happen in THAT scene! Very funny, and a great send off.
I see your point about Kryten and Kochanski, but the conflict wouldn't make sense with Cat. Cat doesn't care about receiving attention and validation from Lister, or at least he would never admit to it.
More evidence that every series of red dwarf happens in a parallel universe. If Lister and Rimmer were breaking into lockers while still on Red Dwarf that has to be series 5 or earlier but Rimmer is in his hard light/blue uniform. Yes I know, it's just a continuety error/the only costume they had on hand for series 7 but still... It makes it all make sense
Kryten's lack of knowledge about taking care of women's clothing is especially odd considering he had previously served on a ship with 3 women... or maybe that's what killed them??? No, probably not.
After this series, there is a special you can watch as well. It's called "Can't Smeg, Won't Smeg". It aired as part of Red Dwarf Night and is quite amusing. This is my favourite episode of this series. Especially the song at the end. Love it. And Kryten's behaviour makes sense to me. He's clearly in love with Lister, and is very possessive of him.
That rimmer song has been in the back of my head on a regular basis for a good 25 years now 😂 Also the kryten jealousy storyline is heading somewhere (sorry if that's a spoiler) so don't be too down on him for it
Great news Paula & Kat... It was rumored this past week... That after a five year absence... Brand new episodes of Red Dwarf are about to be announced. 👌👍
@@Fricasso79 Not officially yet no... But the cast are being extremely coy when asked to comment on the rumors that Red Dwarf is set to return to our screens... Craig Charles was telling everyone a few days ago… That it’s not impossible... And although It’s not officially been confirmed... There’s real hope yet for fans wanting more of Red Dwarf.
We changed over in the mid 70s.and I've still thermometers with both . Now I'm so used to Centigrade I have to look Fahrenheit up . I loved this one , kind of a long goodbye to Rimmer and the song has proved enduringly popular with fans . Great fun to see your reaction to it . I have to agree the Kryten jealousy does let things down a bit .Looking forward to next week . . .
I know I've said it before, But I hope you watch "Can't Smeg, Won't Smeg" after this series. It was a Children in Need Special after Series 7 and is a send/mash up of a British cooking show, "Can't Cook, Won't Cook"
I know they record a few weeks in advance, but I would like to point out that last week I suggested that they might find the S7 version of the Kryten-Kochanski relationship "tiring". And that was the essence of their reaction to that aspect. You're welcome.
Chris Barrie...AKA Rimmer had decided to move on to different projects before series 7, He was the main character in a sit com called the Brittas empire, its not all that good really, to be fair to him Red Dwarf had been absent for at least 3 solid years and he had probably already signed a contract...I am a guy that boasts no spoilers because there are none....
We have to remember that this Lister, Cat and Kryten are ALTERNATIVE versions of the one she KNOWS. . . for all we know, in KOCHANSKI'S universe, they might be MUCH more (or less) tolerable than the one she's IN.
Paula - peculiar pattern in that the British newspapers have always given sunshine temperatures in Fahrenheit but winter temperatures in Celsius (or Centigrade)
ahh, that would explain earlier comments - I'm In the UK but have never looked at a newspaper weather forecast - and TV weather has only been in C in my lifetime (54)
HOT TIP: There are Rimmer Experience inspired plush dolls of the whole crew. Or at least the boys available for sale. (It doesn't look like official RD merch, but that's based on one quick search)
*This episode might have the best ending to a Red Dwarf show...apart from death "your time hath come" Master of the wit and the repartee! GO BOYS FROM THE DWARF.*
I agree with you on the Kryten Kochansky feud however Kryten is programmed to serve humans and for several years he has dedicated his life to Mr Lister, with her on board he cant dedicate the same time to Mr Lister...dont hate Kochansky. its one of those tales where he loved her but she did not love him the same way...she did go out with him and she is his ex girlfriend...she is also his mother :)
I do pick up the snark between Cat and Kochansky. I think the joke is supposed to be that Cat finally meets a real woman and doesn't get along with her.
I never understood why Kryten didn't understand women. They found him on a ship that was run by a crew of women. I know they all died and everything, but you think he would have at least understood something or another about women.
I actually agree on the whole hostility between Kryten and Kochanski. It was important to establish this fear in Kryten about being left alone and explain why he see's Kochanski as a threat to that, but the previous couple of episodes established that quite well. Without going into spoilers it does make sense to try and maintain that level of frustration within Kryten as a character as the story moves forward at this point. That being said, watching this for the first time I can see why one would feel like this fear Kryten has about being alone and how he's connected that fear to Kochanski's presence would feel like it's getting drummed into your skull a little too hard. It is annoying.
Britain used to use Farenheit in the old days. Celcius is standard for the last few decades, but older Brits can still think in F, and for a while everybody just kinda understood both.
Regarding F°. The UK used imperial for a very long time, during the '90s the choice was made to switch to metric. Not everyone was on board. As a result the reaction was mixed, and the country is now an extremely messy blend of the two. Some unanimously accepted like miles for distance/speed, but others vary from place to place like lbs and kgs. I was starting school in the early '00s and it was evident the teachers weren't entirely sure which they were meant to stick too! My parents always used imperial, and imperial is far more common where I work so thats what I default too. But I have friends that have absolutely no understanding of Imperial outside of miles. There was a ruling recently that we were going back to fully imperial, but that unhelpfully got dropped and now were back in limbo. Any decision would be preferable at this point! Ramble over:)

Kryten and Kochanski should have got along, it's weird they didn't.
Loooove The Rimmer Experience!
Like I said in the previous video: Kryten and Kaskinski have the best dynamic. He is afraid to lose his "brother" to the new girl but she is not intrested in taking his role. She tries to sofisticate the guys though with hilarious results. Like in the game night scene and more to come.
I love the reminder that Arnold Rimmer SSC BCS reached the dizzying heights of being a competent swimmer.
Except that it was a fake certificate to hide a microdot, at least if Back to Reality is correct.
Ahh! This is THE one!! The one I waited the whole show for you to get to!! "Tikka To Ride" "Stoke Me A Clipper" and this one! But especially this one!!! YES!!!
The Rimmer Experience really levitated this episode, it always puts a smile on my face.
He will never be mistaken for Yul Brynner, he's not bald and his head doesn't glimmer - My favourite lyric from that song.
Are they going to watch the American Pilot of red Dwarf or have they already?
The Magic Flute bit had me dying. I absolutely know specific interest nerds like that.
About the celsius thing, for some reason in the uk, if its hot af we switched to fahrenhiet
10:21: Those expressions are epic! 🤣🤣
that song has been in my head since that episode first aired😭
I did! Great news! Hopefully Kat and Paula will be able to watch it live to do their reaction to it.
Oh God. It's going to be stuck in my head FOR DAYS.
Fahrenheit / Celsuis? Not a problem. I'm a Kelvin man myself. I mean that's the scale they use in Dune.
What do you mean not a misfit? She keeps salad cream in the cupboard... What a weirdo...
lol.
My dad is 71 he still spouts °F cause he was taught it at school in 50s
I’ve heard that while most countries have adopted the metric system for most things, Fahrenheit is still often used when talking about temperature as it pertains to human comfort.
On the back of salad cream bottles it says "After opening refrigerate and eat within 8 weeks". Kryten wins.
I mean *today* it says that. They’re millions of years into the future, who knows how Salad Cream technology has come on by then!
Yes maybe they'll invent refrigerated cupboards
it says that on ketchup too but I never put either in the fridge and even though its not in the fridge after 8 weeks its still ok.
It's a Rimmer World after all!
Oh god, now that one is back in my head! 😂

The fact that Craig and Chris infamously didn't get along for the first few series' make the payoff all the better 😄
This would have been around the time they would have finally become good friends.
This was when Chris Barrie was off making seven series and 52 episodes of the Brittas Empire.. An extremely funny show..
In the UK for a long time, we used to use Centigrade when talking about freezing weather and Fahrenheit when talking about hot weather.
In the UK we use Fahrenheit for very high temperatures and Celsius for very low. No it doesn’t make sense but it makes for better headlines.
I think we all "felt" what was going to happen in THAT scene! Very funny, and a great send off.
Thats actually the abridged version of the rimmer song.
Lister and Kochanski remember future echo's when he appeared with the twins
Howard Goodall did the singing for the Rimmer muchkins
I see your point about Kryten and Kochanski, but the conflict wouldn't make sense with Cat. Cat doesn't care about receiving attention and validation from Lister, or at least he would never admit to it.
More evidence that every series of red dwarf happens in a parallel universe. If Lister and Rimmer were breaking into lockers while still on Red Dwarf that has to be series 5 or earlier but Rimmer is in his hard light/blue uniform. Yes I know, it's just a continuety error/the only costume they had on hand for series 7 but still... It makes it all make sense
The ultimate episode for the Rimster shippers
Kryten's lack of knowledge about taking care of women's clothing is especially odd considering he had previously served on a ship with 3 women... or maybe that's what killed them??? No, probably not.
He said in this episode he deleted the info as he did not think he would need it again.
You love the kiss? Just wait until you see the extras and how long it went on for 😂
After this series, there is a special you can watch as well.
Another great reaction, you've hit the nail on the head of why Series 7 get a bad wrap with Krtyen being too over whiny
The problem is that Cat knows he is the best looking and nothing in the universe could convince him otherwise.
That rimmer song has been in the back of my head on a regular basis for a good 25 years now 😂
Also the kryten jealousy storyline is heading somewhere (sorry if that's a spoiler) so don't be too down on him for it
So Kryten has been doing Rimmer down for 7 series and now he can't rag on Kochanski for 3 episodes?
Great news Paula & Kat... It was rumored this past week... That after a five year absence... Brand new episodes of Red Dwarf are about to be announced. 👌👍
Really ?
No it hasn't.
@@Fricasso79 I believe Rob Grant is working on a new thing in the Red Dwarf universe.
@@Fricasso79 Not officially yet no... But the cast are being extremely coy when asked to comment on the rumors that Red Dwarf is set to return to our screens... Robert Llewellyn has teased another potential comeback when asked if there would be more from the show... He shared: “I am not at liberty to say"… Which is such a giveaway!... Craig Charles was telling everyone a few days ago… That it’s not impossible... And although It’s not officially been confirmed... There’s real hope yet for fans wanting more of Red Dwarf.
There was talk last year of a prequel
The song will never leave your heads.
I have to agree the Kryten jealousy does let things down a bit .Looking forward to next week . . .
The song is one of my favourite bits ever created.
He's not bald and his dead doesn't glimmer.
We have to remember that this Lister, Cat and Kryten are ALTERNATIVE versions of the one she KNOWS. . . for all we know, in KOCHANSKI'S universe, they might be MUCH more (or less) tolerable than the one she's IN.
And now you'll never get the Rimmer song out of your heads. Ever.
The Rimmer Ride is my single favorite part of the show
92 kelvin,were all fucked
Howard Goodall musical genius
Paula - peculiar pattern in that the British newspapers have always given sunshine temperatures in Fahrenheit but winter temperatures in Celsius (or Centigrade)
ahh, that would explain earlier comments - I'm In the UK but have never looked at a newspaper weather forecast - and TV weather has only been in C in my lifetime (54)
Robert Llewellyn himself said, “You just wanna smack Kryten this series.”
this one was absolutely buried in my recommended feed, very unusual, i'm subscribed and everything
1:57 Spot on. They were desperately trying to get funding for a film.
I think they figured out why people were saying season 7 isn't the best.
He mentioned he deleted info on women because he did not think he would need it anymore.
Getting in here preemptively, because... hell yes.
He's also a fantastic swimmer.
