Red Dwarf is a cult classic and my favourite series!
**Spolier Alert** The characters are as follows:
Rimmer, Arnold J. - 2nd Technician, killed in a radiation accident, now resurected as a hologram (hence, the 'H')
Lister, David - the last human alive, originally put into suspended animation for an illegal pet cat
'Cat' - a creature which evolved from the cat Lister brought aboard Red Dwarf
    Kryten - a sanitation Mechanoid
@KingBoomer Please begin this show from the beginning 😁👍🏻

The "H" on the forehead means he's a hologram. In the red dwarf universe it is possible and kind of common for a deceased person to be brought back as a hologram with the personality and all the memories they had before death. Later Rimmer gets upgradded to "Hard Light" which means he can phisicly interact with objects and people, which he couldnt before, basicly like a movie projection, things coild pass right through.

    • @ollythomas6702

It's sort of the premise of the entire show too. Lister is meant to be the only known human left, 3 million years in the future. Rimmer is a Hologram, Cat is evolved from Listers pet cat and Kryton is a mechanoid. Great show and it's well worth watching the first series to get an understanding of it.

Fave story is DJJ turned up for his audition to be the Cat an hour late (he did not know this) wearing a relatives old Zoot Suit and was totally unapologetic (of course did not know they had been waiting) the people casting thought he was already being in character as the DNGAF Cat and pretty much hired him on the spot. Still not sure where he got that accent from? Craig Charles was initially brought in to look at the cat character and check it was PC as they did not want any allegations of racism (very progressive for 1988) but saw the Dave Lister character and instantly knew it fitted him like a glove. So two Manc writers hired a scouser to be the last human in the galaxy!

Red Dwarf is really imaginative as well as funny. Each standalone episode features a really interesting Star Trek style phenomenon or spacetime dilemma. Season 1, Episode 1 is "The End", Episode 6 "The Beginning" that should clue you in a bit. There's time loops, an adaptive moon that terraform based on your mood, a virus that gives you luck... Always an interesting premise with lots of room for fun in it.
The crew are always railing on each other as they contrast so much as you've seen here. Great character chemistry, great set ups and settings.

Americans tend to refer to an English accent as a British accent, I think this is where it comes from. The term British could also be separated away from the United Kingdom as Britain is the island not the political entity, anyone on the island is British though the end of the political union has probably at best hastened this dissolution of the Act of Union and at worst caused it. Personally this Sassenach says "please get on with it Sweaties, chop chop, I'm too old to be waiting 20 years to get my EU passport back, my father was Scottish".

As per standard with the majority of Brit and Irish comedies, Red Dwarf starts off slow and with a low budget (until Season 2). The positive is that there's only 6 episodes of Season 1 to get through before the good stuff, and to be fair Season 1 still has some very funny moments. The American TH-camr, Josh from 'After Work Reactions' recently reacted to the entire thing, and he's now a bonafide fan. Getting through early episodes of Brit sitcoms can be a bit of a chore, but they do pay off alot of the time.

Alan Davis: "we call him Dave ja vu". Dave used to be repeats (including Qi) and other channels back cataloge. It also reason why Dave +1 called Dave ja vu

Arnold Rimmer ( the one with the ‘H’ on his forehead) is a hologram of a dead crewman. The one in the pink Jacket is cat. He evolved from the ships cat over 3 million years. Kryton is a domestic android designed to generally for cleaning duties and Lister is the only surviving human on the mining ship Red dwarf after a catastrophic accident 3 million years before which wiped out the entire crew. Lister was in the prison in suspended animation for violation of some law (which I can’t remember now ).
So they’re the only crew of Red dwarf now.

You should watch full episodes of Red Dwarf from the beginning so you get to know the characters personalities, absolutely legendary show here. Elite tier.
As for the Welsh as with everyone in the UK and Ireland if you can’t take a joke you won’t last long in life, we take the piss out of new people we meet as a measure of character. If they laugh it off and give it back they’re sound and there’s good friend potential there.

'Quarantine' is worth a watch for Mr. Flibble alone.
'White Hole' for the opening convo between Kryten, Lister and 'Talkie Toaster'.
'Blue', for one of the most disturbing musical numbers of the show's history.
    'Polymorph'. Great throughout.
But most of all, 'Quarantine'. Mr Flibble will be happy if you do, angry if you don't. 😉
Do not upset Mr Flibble. 😉

H - hologram. Rimmer is dead, the computer decided that Lister needed someone to talk too, keeping him sane as he is the only crew member to survive. Kat is a weird mutation the computer doesn't think is intelligent and they found kryton on a derelict ship
And that was some mad foreshadowing for Ace Rimmer at the end there.
Also Netflix is dropping this show and nine seasons is a lot to binge.

Red Dwarf is one of the best sit com in T.V. history .Look up on you tube Patrick Stewarts reaction when he first saw it on television .
It was shot in front of a live audience and there are some great programmes about its history and bloopers.
in space no one can hear you smeg .That was a poster my daughter had on her wall.

  • @SteffBrockley

They are all different creatures. Only Lister (front right) is human. Rimmer has an H on his head because he’s a hologram of a dead person. The Cat (from left) has fangs because he’s descended from cats in the same way that we’re descended from apes. Red Dwarf is great as full episodes, but if I were to recommend clips on TH-cam, I would recommend “Rimmer and Cat Inquisition”, “Rimmer’s Gone Wrong” and “The Trial” (of Rimmer). No surprise which character is the fan favourite, but the four main characters together make this show sing. Additional: if you hear them use the word “smeg” or “smegging”, take it as a futuristic swearword

Red Dwarf is a classic. You really need to see the 1st episode it explains a lot and introduces all but the android, he joined the cast in later seasons. Also Lister is the last human in the universe.
The actor Rimmer played the butler in Angelina Jolie's Lara Croft movies. He also was the title character in a series The Brittas Empire was made while they were still making Red Dwarf.
