For this video I shot it from Osaka and Bangkok. When traveling to other countries, it always validates why I love Thailand the best. It comes down to quality of life and warm-heartedness, and how a place makes me 'feel'. I feel best in Thailand. Question for you: where is it in the world that you 'feel' best?
I am Thai. and I really hate the word "Sabai Sabai". Yes, the meaning of this word is good and in positive ways but it can ruin our discipline. When the discipline is gone the problems will be overwhelming to Thailand or wherever there is no discipline.. So the word " Sabai Sabai" is the enemy of Thailand's discipline which protects our countries from ridiculous problems. I hope you realize my point and what I am trying to make you understand.
- I once told my professor, (a Russian who studied, worked, and had lived in Japan for a long time) that Japanese is kind. He immediately responded, "Japanese are very polite but not necessarily kind". So, it is nice to hear you pointed out 00:19:36 the differences between kindness and politeness because many people misperceive that politeness has to come from kindness, but that is not always the case. - Many people see Japan as a collective society similar to Thailand, but that is not true at all. By nature, Japanese are very individualistic (this is polar opposite to the Thais), but they are forced to live together in the collective society by rules, maybe due to the harsh weather conditions, natural disasters and wars. This explains why in the interview 00:25:46 he feel more human connections in Thailand than in Japan even though waitress/waiter are also welcoming in both countries. (actually, waitress/waiter smile even more in Japan because they follow the rules and practices, but in Thailand people are more genuine about their feelings, if they smile, it means they are happy, if they look grumpy, it means they are in a bad mood, but surely the expressions will not be as obvious as the westerners) - Finally, if you ask Thais which country they want Thailand to become, 90% of the people will say Japan. Thais adore the Japanese so much especially about cleanliness, work ethic, orderliness, and politeness.
Interesting to hear your professor said the same, about the difference between polite vs. kind. The thing that you mention about collective seems true. In Japan the 'collectiveness' is different from Thailand, it feels more forced in Japan, less 'together'. Whereas, in Thailand it feels the opposite and more natural. I wonder how much of Thai admiration is due partly to being naive to the realities of Japanese 'cold' and less joyful culture.
@@PhilipJames360 Many people realize the negative side of Japanese society, especially the young, and surely, they don't appreciate that part. Idealistically, Thais want the cities to be more clean, more organized, and the people to be more obeyed to the laws, and more responsible to the public. Ironically, the main obstacles of all these is the sabai sabai mentality. Sabai sabai could stand for happiness in buddhist sense or the term associated with laziness, irresponsibility. A japanese youtuber who have lived in Thailand for so long once said, adopting pros of japanese values with the thai values will create the most perfect human.
I am Thai and what you said is so true. I guested it's the orderly, cleanliness and the communal responsibility of the Japanese society we admired so much. Maybe in a sense, we feel that those are the kind of things far fetch for our society to be able to achieve. when I learned how Japanese teaches children in kindergarten, I was astounded. The amount of discipline and responsibility ingrained into every school activity is crazy. Sabai sabai is a thing in the Thai genes. I admired Japan very much BUT I would never live there just for the very same reason this video mentioned. I think many Thai especially the new generation do not realized how lucky they are, to inherit an exceptional cultural traditions and religion for which played a vital role how the Thai society are shaped into. We have a society of acceptance and not tolerance, thus making it more natural as a collective community. Not perfect by any means but much acceptable for everyone.
I can say that 90% are want to travel there to get a culture and relaxing like many other tourists while 10% are work aboard and finally this serious work culture is soooo to their thing and they prefer working there following their singer dream etc.

100% true, not only Japan, Thailand beats every country on planet earth, while most western countries are drowning in debt with people queuing to rent unaffordable apartments and rising cost of living, Thailand is as affordable as it was a decade ago. Thai's also do not take BS in their life, if they do not like something they just quit, slavery isn't in their genes, they keep stress to a minimum, which is why they are so happy, polite and kind aka lack of corporate slavery like in Japan & west which sucks your soul for few pennies.
I’m a Japanese. I absolutely agree with you. Thai people are much more helpful and friendly than Japanese. And most of us don’t speak English, even hospital. 😂 In addition, we are afraid of the massive natural disaster all the time. 😢
For Thai people, Japan is the older brother that Thailand tries to follow. We try to follow in the footsteps of Japan even though our country is only a 3rd world country. But we will not abandon our old habits. fun-lovingness It is a simple and uncomplicated nation. We are a people who live a simple and friendly life. Wow, this is a praise of the highest order. Thank you! Thailand does look up to Japan as her benchmark - her model - although we realise we'll never rise to that level simply because we don't have their work ethics and, quite frankly, integrity.
I have a Japanese friend who at first didn't want to come to Thailand. But due to increased benefits such as accommodation and transportation, he was able to come to Thailand. But upon arrival, he paid a fixed fee, delicious food, sightseeing, and a feeling of relaxation. Including having more money to save. But when he was sent back to Japan, he felt regretful and did not want to return. Thai people take care of him and send him back. He had a sad look on his face.

Thanks for the video. I lived in Japan for a summer six years ago. It totally changed my perspective on the way we live in the west. I will never look at the United States the same way. Hoping to make my way back out to Japan this summer to reconnect with friends!
Pretty spot on. Japan is the easy choice for most people but it's not for everyone. While Thailand will not be for most people, it will fit some who love easy life style.
It also depends on the preference. If you like to be alone and love being by yourself, a nice area in rural Japan would be best. On the opposite side, if you want warmth from other people and acceptance, Thailand and many other asian countries are receptive and appreciate foreigners who want to know about their culture.
First of all great comparison , your presentation is informative, educational and also entertaining keep up the good work . Having been to both countries many times I can attest to all the things that you said , everything is right on target .
สวัสดีครับเจมส์ ...I have friends from Kyoto and Nara. We have been close for almost 30 years. They usually come to Thailand every year. Except during the COVID outbreak They want to come and live in Thailand permanently. Their favorite place is Chiang Mai. Ayutthaya and Yaowarat..^_^..
I'm Thai. Since young age, I always adore Japanese orderly and cleanliness etc. like any other common Thais growing up with Japanese media. When I first travel to Japan everything seems pretty as expected. But when look hard enough, I really feel stress in the air and it's heavy. That's make me don't even want to work in Japanese company in Thailand lol. Japan is still top on my travel bucket list. Very very nice for traveler.
Yes, exactly what you say! The air is 'heavy' in Japan. I would never want to work for a Japanese company. But like you say, it is a nice country to be a tourist.
As a thai I must say I love going to Japan.I totally agreed with you in the politeness and kindness things I could feel the same.Still Malaysians and Japanese seem to be most similar to thais in term of general cultures and charecters except Japnese seem to be too nice sometimes 😊😊😊 somehow Japan has become Thai No.1 Tourists destination including mine.😊😊😊 I always enjoy my times there ....❤❤❤
Before I retired I had three favorite countries that I considered: Japan, Brazil and Thailand. For Japan I was not suited.... the politeness level is too high there. Brazil was too dangerous with muggings at gunpoint and you always had to be aware of that. Thailand is far more relaxed, so I decided for Thailand.
Get out of America dude it’s getting bad here, people are losing it and hyperinflation is going to start by 2025 trust me this place is getting worse by the week at this point. Everyone arguing over politicians who hate us to it’s comical, Americans are dumb in general and this place is flooded with ill eagles (TH-cam might sensor the word) it’s going to crash here. I have all the respect for Japan even if they won’t care for me as much, I would fit perfect in that culture just have to accept being a regular white guy there, good looking enough to have a chance there with a good woman 🤷🏻♂️
I find that like comment here. Japan is what happen if Thailand put their people into serious mode. It good place if you like travel to city and live like a City people perfect City suppose to be. While, Thailand are more of slider from City life at Bangkok to Villager kind and cheerful life. Chang mai still between City and Villager life meanwhile bottom of Thailand are Fisherman villager life. Japan do offer this but it is very hard to get into when local are seeing you like alien because they can not communicate with you. While Thailand as sabai sabai. They can not speak English but they will help you and get to know you too.

But when there are natural disasters, they are severe and frightening. Thai people have been familiar with the Japanese since the Ayutthaya period. And there are Japanese people who have held the highest position, up to the level of Chao Phraya, which is equivalent to the current Prime Minister. We became close friends before World War II and when many Japanese invested in the project industry in Thailand. They were involved in helping to provide weapons and equipment which enabled the Thai army to reclaim some of the territory lost to the French Empire at that time. My professor is a law professor who graduated with a first class gold medal from Germany and teaches in France. Including being a part-time lecturer teaching at Tokyo University. He said that when he flew from France to teach privately in Tokyo, Two Japanese teachers came to thank and praise Thailand. who are Japan's best true friends Because when Japan lost World War 2 and announced its surrender The following year, the Thai government announced its surrender and would not abandon Japan. Plus, donate rice to help Japanese people in times of need and no one to help. Because they saw that Japan was poor and had lost the war. Even Russia, which made a treaty of peace and amity between them. broke the contract and sent fighter planes to bomb Hokkaido until it was damaged and captured 4 Kuril Islands.
Japan to travel, YES. To live, NO. Thai culture. Need to live here to understand. Sabuy Sabuy = easy going Mai Pen Rai = Nevermind, easy to forgive Krang Jai = Caring and think of other before oneself.
Fun video! But makes me think at the same time. .😊 I understand what he's saying about Japan. I lived in West Coast for years and came back to Yokohama last month. Wow I might want to move to Thailand❤ looks good!! question: I went to Thai restaurants in the States a lot but the food including Curry was too sweet 😖 I wonder if the restaurants in Thailand use less sugar??🙏
I am an American who is fed up here, people need to understand even if Japan economy is bad living there is way cheaper then USA, wages are not enough in USA for most people to even be worth living here, people are not happy here and it’s getting worse.
I am thai , i know everything in thailand is cheap that is the main reason why the tourists can stay for long time ,in fact we can not fight japan in every side i think 😅
Sean, the football scene maybe was Phuket. There are a lot of leagues and pickup games in the south. Bangkok has a good community too, but my experience is Phuket is better for health, fitness, nature, and football.
I doubt that. Other countries in SEA are not so far different from Thailand. Philippines, Malaysians, for example, usually have similar attitudes toward life.
@@klaaskay2685 Yes, and there are only two other large Buddhist majority countries in Asia - Myanmar and Cambodia. Myanmar is in the middle of a horrific civil war in which they are all killing each other with no end in sight. Cambodia is a depressing place haunted by its horrendous genocidal tendencies that has become a dystopian playground for Chinese criminals.
Due to the weak yen, little or no increase to Japan's wages, and no spike in prices, Japan is more affordable than Phuket. Phuket's cost of living is higher than Chiang Mai, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Japan. Some people try to come to Phuket on a low budget, in this case it is less enjoyable.
Food culture Thailand during the ancient kingdom such as Ayutthaya In the 18th century, it was considered one of the largest metropolises in the world at the time. with a population size larger than Paris and London. It is the region's first city with more than 1 million people living on the river island and surrounding areas. which is a new city created by two kingdoms agreeing to build together There is a Western description of the greatness of Ayutthaya. that it is the city of gold or "Suvarnabhumi" from the top of the castle and Buddha statue It is a port city where forest products are gathered. and high quality spices exported to China India and Europe including ordering imported products Therefore there were many merchants, laborers, slaves, and fortune-seekers who came to live there, until many foreign communities and villages were formed. Such as communities of Chinese, Japanese, Persian, Indian, Portuguese, Dutch, French, Mon, Lao, Makkasa (Indonesia), Malay, Cham, Lao, Khmer (Cambodia), Vietnamese, some of whom have held the position of Chao Phraya. or Somdet Chao Phraya Equivalent to the position of Prime Minister or governor Such as Chao Phraya Wichaiyen (Greek), Phraya Ratchabangsan (Persian), Phraya who was Chinese. and issued Yasenaphimuk or Yamada Nagamasa or in the reigns of King Rama IV and King Rama V during the Bangkok period, he also had the position of Phraya in the field of law for the Belgians and the Japanese. or giving the position of a high-ranking police officer such as a Danish, Malayu, or other important position For these reasons, raw materials are imported from abroad such as papaya peppers, various vegetables, as well as food recipes. Made from Europe, China, India and Persia, as well as Malay. mixed with pre-existing local food along with creativity, observation and development in making food recipes and desserts of Thai people.
Fruit can be purchased for very good prices in Japan. But not at the department stores which he showed here. That stuff is for people with money to waste on presents.
Japanese women will never ask you for money, and you have a ZERO chance of getting your items stolen while you're sleeping or awake. If you lose your wallet full of cash the odds are that it's waiting for you at the nearest police station as well. You cannot be broke and live here so if you're on a budget then Thailand is a much better option. You CAN OWN LAND here, I own Commercial Property so it can be done easily.. You can buy whatever you want but don't expect Japanese bank loans. You can own, homes, apartments, land and businesses without issues and you will never get scammed with leasing or rental agents as you hear about in Thailand.
Big plus for Japan. I've got experience in both countries. It's way easier to find a girlfriend (an actual one, not a prostitute spending time with you for money) in Japan. Someone who actually likes you, doesn't ask for money, makes their own money, is educated and intelligent. That's common in Japan but very uncommon in Thailand.
I totally agree with your number 1 choice. Japanese are kind but there's an underlying anger / frustration / resentment toward life. I really feel that here.
Thank you for this video it convinced me that I will never be an expats in Japan But could be nice to visit to renew thai tourist visa The money system is broken and in some countries like Japan this is more obvious than in others, And all the surveillance from government just make people sad and sick

Sabuy Sabuy = easy going
Mai Pen Rai = Nevermind, easy to forgive
Krang Jai = Caring and think of other before oneself.
I have been in 53 countries speak 5 languages I choose Thailand forever for living
I love Thaikand so much sir. Thanks
Just find your channel, but love this at first seeing
Been in Japan for 22 years. Obviously a good place but can get a bit boring.
Thumbs up 👍 Borderless Office
You make me miss Thailand!!
Fun video! But makes me think at the same time. .😊 I understand what he's saying about Japan. I lived in West Coast for years and came back to Yokohama last month. Wow I might want to move to Thailand❤ looks good!! question: I went to Thai restaurants in the States a lot but the food including Curry was too sweet 😖 I wonder if the restaurants in Thailand use less sugar??🙏
absolutely right about Japanese being polite but seem cold.
I like this video. I am from near Osaka city. I live in Florida for 16 years now, I am tired of price going up so much about everything in USA,
Hope you can return to Osaka. I was born in Kobe, not to far from Osaka.
I am an American who is fed up here, people need to understand even if Japan economy is bad living there is way cheaper then USA, wages are not enough in USA for most people to even be worth living here, people are not happy here and it’s getting worse.
In the past 2-3 years I feel that Thai people can communicate better in English.
To the point that foreigners see no point in learning Thai language
Another banger, Philip! Couldn't agree with your assessment of these two countries more!
Thank you Jamie
About No.10Thailand Tropical fruits yes but motorbike taxi is quite risky to take 🤓
I am thai , i know everything in thailand is cheap that is the main reason why the tourists can stay for long time ,in fact we can not fight japan in every side i think 😅
One of your videos you played football with expats weekly in bangkok, where is the game as I'm interested in getting a game, another great video btw
Sean, the football scene maybe was Phuket.
There are a lot of leagues and pickup games in the south. Bangkok has a good community too, but my experience is Phuket is better for health, fitness, nature, and football.
Here in Calgary, the immigrants play FaceTime with their phones' speakers blasting and their feet up on the seats.
As a Thai people, I do believe the religion (Buddhism) is the core to made the Thai people are kind.
Are Cambodians also kind?
I doubt that. Other countries in SEA are not so far different from Thailand. Philippines, Malaysians, for example, usually have similar attitudes toward life.
@@klaaskay2685 Yes, and there are only two other large Buddhist majority countries in Asia - Myanmar and Cambodia. Myanmar is in the middle of a horrific civil war in which they are all killing each other with no end in sight. Cambodia is a depressing place haunted by its horrendous genocidal tendencies that has become a dystopian playground for Chinese criminals.
Just see Numpla's camera women first time.👍
Do you have any vids about Thai or Philippines visa process and rules?
Thais are excellent in English, even people from other Asian countries come to Thailand to learn English and those who speak english dont learn Thai
I think even the Japanese in the video learned and improved their English in Thailand
wait, did you say living in Japan is cheaper than living in Phuket? I find that really hard to believe. Is it true?
Due to the weak yen, little or no increase to Japan's wages, and no spike in prices, Japan is more affordable than Phuket. Phuket's cost of living is higher than Chiang Mai, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Japan. Some people try to come to Phuket on a low budget, in this case it is less enjoyable.

Thailand during the ancient kingdom such as Ayutthaya In the 18th century, it was considered one of the largest metropolises in the world at the time. with a population size larger than Paris and London. It is the region's first city with more than 1 million people living on the river island and surrounding areas. which is a new city created by two kingdoms agreeing to build together
There is a Western description of the greatness of Ayutthaya. that it is the city of gold or "Suvarnabhumi" from the top of the castle and Buddha statue It is a port city where forest products are gathered. and high quality spices exported to China India and Europe including ordering imported products
Therefore there were many merchants, laborers, slaves, and fortune-seekers who came to live there, until many foreign communities and villages were formed. Such as communities of Chinese, Japanese, Persian, Indian, Portuguese, Dutch, French, Mon, Lao, Makkasa (Indonesia), Malay, Cham, Lao, Khmer (Cambodia), Vietnamese, some of whom have held the position of Chao Phraya. or Somdet Chao Phraya Equivalent to the position of Prime Minister or governor Such as Chao Phraya Wichaiyen (Greek), Phraya Ratchabangsan (Persian), Phraya who was Chinese. and issued Yasenaphimuk or Yamada Nagamasa or in the reigns of King Rama IV and King Rama V during the Bangkok period, he also had the position of Phraya in the field of law for the Belgians and the Japanese. or giving the position of a high-ranking police officer such as a Danish, Malayu, or other important position
For these reasons, raw materials are imported from abroad such as papaya peppers, various vegetables, as well as food recipes. Made from Europe, China, India and Persia, as well as Malay. mixed with pre-existing local food along with creativity, observation and development in making food recipes and desserts of Thai people.
You forgot one big downside of Thailand - Weather!
Haha true , that's why Thailand has less expat it shoud be. Happy
I'm Thai. 100% agree. in summer its too hot to be happy 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Fruit can be purchased for very good prices in Japan. But not at the department stores which he showed here. That stuff is for people with money to waste on presents.
your video are good
Too much of stressful life living in Land of The Rising Sun. No doubt it’s life alike the movie Matrix there.

@@petetia9364 These dumb thais only see things on the surface. You are the smart one.

Healthy lifestyle, food, exercise? Average life expectancy in Japan is 85 years, in Thailand it is 78. Japanese must be doing something right.
85 for women. 79-80 for men.
Renting is a pain in the 455 & expensive in Japan.
i think you're creeping some of those japanese out when you lean into them...personal space still important even if they've lived abroad
Well he is an expat.
💛💙🙏🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭❤️
🎉❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🎉
Im sure there's more violent crime in Japan with gangs and mafia.
It's the truth
That's why they call them the coldest of the Asians. ;)
Thank you for this video it convinced me that I will never be an expats in Japan
But could be nice to visit to renew thai tourist visa
The money system is broken and in some countries like Japan this is more obvious than in others, And all the surveillance from government just make people sad and sick
Short visits to Japan are perfect. At one time being an expat looked attractive, until spending extended time there.

But for Thai people Japan is a very good older brother. We love Japan
I am Thai. and I really hate the word "Sabai Sabai".
Yep! So true. Related to the problem of 'Sabai Sabai' is it can sometime appear like apathy, which is not good at all.
Thank you for your comment.
