Excellent video. I’m a retired lawyer from San Francisco 7 years in Bangkok. Nice to see a vlog about those of us who have retired that actually planned for a good retirement here in Thailand. There are challenges to be sure number one on the list enroll in Thai language school if you don’t already have that knowledge. Don’t fall in love too fast.. well maybe that’s number one😂😂
Nice to see an interview with someone who has very similar resources and desires as I do instead of those videos of how live on $1,000/month. I have a friend with the 10 year visa as well and it definitely seems the way to go if you are in that financial status. Thanks Adam.
Great and interesting video! I smiling when I see my old condo for 5 years in your background on soi 12 called Lakeview Residence or former Bangkapi Mansion. Great area! We will be back soon as well. Also happy to hear Steve is from my old city Denver where I was an International Student and ended up staying for many years 1987 thru 1996. Loved Colorado! Wonder if you know my host family there? They owned a construction real estate company with office downtown on Blake Street. Anyway, so happy to see this video for many reasons and also for my planned retirement in Bangkok! Thank you!!
@@ChipSmith-x8s Hi! Yes, agree we have things in common. I live in Stockholm Sweden and go back to bkk and Thailand as much as possible since we left 2023.
Nice 1 Adam and it certainly looks like Steve is living the dream in BKK ! What an amazing view he has and I bet it looks great at night from his balcony
Great interview, Adam! This guy successfully transitioned from his life in the US, with what surely was a difficult divorce and his decision to retire in Thailand, and he put it all very well in action. He's living the life I plan to have in just a few years, though I still don't really know if I'd prefer to settle in Bangkok or in places like Koh Samui or Hua Hin. In any case, he is a real source of inspiration!
Hey Steve and Adam, another informative video. Great work. I saw you at the last meetup Steve but you left before we could chat! 🙂 I am jealous, your video has more views than mine. Good explanations.
I think for first time long term renters, a good agent is a good idea. You tell them your wants and desires and they narrow down an endless list of options for you. They make sure you do not get bamboozled. Once you get that first one out of the way, you know the areas, you know the ins and outs, then doing a search on your own makes more sense.
Nice interview! I'm sure the comments will come about the rent that he's paying. There's always a few people who will complain about how someone else spends their money...lol...the bottom line is that Bangkok has soooo many options to rent. I think that $2k for the location and size of his apartment is reasonable. Not everyone who comes to Thailand from the western world is struggling or on a tight budget.
I think the DTV Visa sounds easier to get than the 10 year LTR retirement Visa. Especially the income requirement for the LTR opposed to the DTV, but both are great options. Moving to Thailand in 2025
Wise and Remitly charge a fee for your exchange which is reasonable but the dig is they give you a lower exchange rate. Example: I transferred money from the US to the Philippines this morning. The exchange rate according to google is $1US=55.96PHP but remitly only gave me 53.62PHP per $1US
thanks for making such informative and down-to-earth video. Personally I prefer Chiang Mai city, which is more quiet , relatively cooler climate, lower cost while still very diverse.

Adam having been coming to Thailand for over 20 years now i think the best visa is simple and cheap a mulitiple entry visa no need to deal with lawyers and banks or realy anything so all you need to do is leave thailand for a few days here and there could be as simple as flying to Singapore which is what i have done this satisfies the requierment and is realy not a hastle all these requierments for elite visa / wealthy foreinger visa is to much of a scheem stick to the basics and use thailand has a home base.. this works unless you are working in some fashion in country ...
Aloha Adam! Really informative interview -- thank you! Steve's situation is so similar to mine, it's really great to see his process... I HAVE ONE Question: What was the name of Steve's Thai Law Firm that did his LTR? They sound like the people I need (as I have a retirement visa but want to upgrade). Please advise...
Somebody already mentioned the name so I won't, but based on the view at 17:00 it's at the end of Soi 8. Interesting thing is there's no direct access from Soi 8 to the park (at least last time I went down to the end). You can cut through a church parking area to soi 10 if the gates aren't locked, which happened to me one time. If it were me, I'd rather be two minutes from the BTS or MRT and walk 10 minutes to the park but that's just me. That's an awesome view for sure.
Yes, I believe that’s his uncle. It was alluded to early in the video when ChrisParker (Retired & Working For You) was brought up and Adam Parker, the interviewer, laughed and jokingly said ‘don’t know the guy.’
He chose Bangkok Thailand Because its ,,pm 2.5 . pollution is among the highest in the world According to the Thailand health minister..living in Bangkok. Will shorten you life by 8 year
Mostly, the PM 2.5 dust problem occurs during the winter-summer months for only a few months. As of now, according to the IQAir app, the air quality in Bangkok is at 38, marked as green. Nowadays, air purifiers have become essential for residences. If you're not working outdoors or staying outside all day and night, the PM 2.5 issue isn't something to be too worried about. From your post stating that life expectancy could shorten by 8 years, under the conditions I mentioned, it would likely be much less than that. I’m speaking optimistically here, even though losing even 1 year of life expectancy shouldn't happen.
I'm an expat and have lived in several megacities with horrible PMi...I'm younger....and healthy, but the reality is, living in a city like Bangkok and breathing the air is like smoking an entire pack of cigarettes every day. PMI 2.5 comes mostly from vehicles, burning garbage and agricultural waste. Nasty gases like sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon dioxide....even lead. Yes. It's that bad. One's body can get used to it....but the damage is still done. Long term, causes organ damage, heart disease, cancers ect.... And don't believe air purifiers actually do anything...for one, they cannot filter out gasses. Now i live in a coastal area with fresh, pristine clean air. I love cities, but I love clean air more.
Funny how these Americans who hoot and holler about living in the GREATEST COUNTRY ON EARTH WITH FREEDOM UNPARALLELED decide to vacation and retire in Asian countries. Lollll

I'm not sure what you're laughing about. Thailand doesn't really take in immigrants, so we're expats. America is much more open to immigration. I wish was an immigrant in Thailand instead of just an expat.
You are affected by the pollution even if u don't know it. The pm2 particles enter your lungs permanently. After awhile you can develop respiratory issues and later on it gets into your organs and disease occurs. 40% of the produce there exceeds Who guidelines for maximum pesticide limits. Even if you go organic there is no domestic authority to check it. If you eat out a lot you are consuming highly processed seed ,vegetable oils which also cause diseases. It is hot as hell in BKK many days as well as flooded streets. The traffic is insane and I wouldnt be caught driving a motorbike. I love the positives as a single man but the negatives outweigh them. I am thinking of moving to Jomptien, cooking myself, and getting a high quality air purifier. I'll use bolt and baht bus. Not as crowded, lots of expats, and nightlife. Not as polluted and by the beach. Max rent will be 1000. I'll budget max $3000 to $4000 but wont spend it all. I'm lazy so won't travel that much. Just give me beautiful women and weed and I'm all set.
That's not guarantee he got all that $4,500 a month, nobody knows that he might have alimony to his ex-wife or partner, a child support from random lady in America that he does not want to mention in the video. Other than that, he spends too much. I think the most is $3000 or B100K a month.
Saigon has as many places to choose from as Bangkok...probably more. Phnom Penh has less choices but there are plenty of good places to get all sorts of food there.
