    Another cool vid. The amount of Johnson’s that need the timer base compared to the stator is unreal. Power pak, timer base, stator is how I check them.
    Piece of advice, you should just stick with flipping motors bcuz the risk is far lower. I’m sure you’ve been burnt with transoms/floors in the past. Not worth the man hours.
    Looks like you live up north where no saltwater is found. Lucky you. Good job

    • @BoatBusters
      @BoatBusters  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Haha yes no saltwater here! And I don’t buy boats to flip unless I have already checked the transom and floors for stability. If they’re bad I just don’t buy them! Have never had a boat project go south on me for something of that nature before. But I have wasted hours of driving only to find they were bad when i was told they weren’t… but great advice and I appreciate your support!

    My first boat had almost as many problems, it was a 1977 tri hull with a 70 HP Johnson, the motor was a new replacement, but was sitting for 8 years unused, I acquired it in about 2001 (before youtube) , it took me 6 months to get it running and asking a boat expert that was a friend. Water Pump issues, green gunk in the float bowls was the extent of it. Just think, with youtube you can fix things alot faster.

      Thank you! And my recommendation would be as nice of one as you can afford… my compression gauge was $19 on Amazon and I haven’t had any issues! It may be reading a lower PSI than what it actually is but my main concern with compression is that the cylinders are even, and my cheap Amazon gauge does just that. Also for a spark plug tester I recommend the SINGARO Inline Spark Plug Tester on Amazon - it’s $6 (Dirt cheap) and never failed me! I like being able to see the spark through the light on it.

    Does it cost money to register and insurance the boat beg it's re sold?

    • @BoatBusters
      @BoatBusters  6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Good question! Boats in my state are not required to have insurance. It’s always a good idea to have it, and I would on all personal boats I use regularly. However I do not insure boats that I’m flipping. The boat does need registration to be on the water. They’re stickers and they’re about $30 and good for 3 years at a time. Most boats I flip have good registration, if not then I just pay up and get it registered. The expensive part in my state is the title transfer process. Boats longer than 14 ft and outboards greater than 10 horsepower need legal titles. Getting them notarized and transferred required you to pay tax on the purchase price of each!

  • @RifeB6892
    @RifeB6892 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

    It would be great if you could walk through how you link and synced the carbs and set the timing after you took everything apart. I’m guessing at minimum you had to sync the carbs. I’ve heard that timing should be redone when replacing the timer base.
    Also if you could walk through how you did the lower unit shift bolt, that is a beast of a bolt and takes very fine finesse. You should have done that with the carbs off, would have been so much easier!
    Was replacing the T stats hard or just pop the caps off and swap out?
    And don’t use a gear puller on the flywheel, use the correct puller, you don’t want to end up like me with a cracked flywheel! That was a sad day for me, trying to find another one was a mess. Good luck with the sale!

    • @BoatBusters
      @BoatBusters  วันที่ผ่านมา

      I did sync the carbs- did not adjust any timing. There is a key on the crankshaft and a notch in the flywheel so the timing should not change / it will always return in the same place it left. The lower unit shift bolt was a beast 😂 and yes I wish I did it with the carbs off but hindsight is 20/20 haha.. I used my little 4 prong nut retriever to get the bolt barely threaded and a 3 foot long screwdriver to turn it in. T stats were incredibly easy, just pop the caps off and swap them. And yes I did use the correct gear puller and admitted my fault the second go around haha!

    • @RifeB6892
      @RifeB6892 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@BoatBusters What guide did you follow to sync the carbs? I have heard due to differences in the timer bases that timing need to be verified but it's probably ok. I hear ya on that bolt, I've done it a couple times and there's just no good way to do it! Ill probably try to do my T stats this summer at some point then, sounds like good preventative maintenance. I'm glad you didnt damage your flywheel, that would of been a bad day, dont ask me how I know haha.

As far as references there will be a TH-cam video out there showing you exactly how to do any job to your motor that you need to do 99% of the time. If your dad still has the owners manual that will really be the only resource you will ever need - you can buy one for your motor on eBay as well. I’m not in Louisiana so I really don’t know any of their title laws - however it’s usually a massive pain of a process. I would imagine if you called your local title office they can instruct you on the exact process for getting registration so then you can take that registration and get a title! Sorry I couldn’t be much more helpful on this one

      Q a😊@@BoatBusters

  • @DragginLineOutdoors
    @DragginLineOutdoors หลายเดือนก่อน

    Quick question why didn't you have to time it. I thought after pulling the fly wheel you have to retime and link and sync

    • @BoatBusters
      @BoatBusters  หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is a good question! The flywheel on this engine can only be put back onto the crankshaft in one spot. There is a notch inside the flywheel and on the crankshaft that prevents it from being placed in any other spot than exactly where you took it off. Therefore not necessary to touch any timing components. The only timing adjustment I make outside of ensuring carb butterflies are even is setting the proper idle RPM speed.

    • @DragginLineOutdoors
      @DragginLineOutdoors หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BoatBusters so as long as you don't take the key out of the notch you should be fine? I have to replace the timer base on my Johnson 115 also

    • @BoatBusters
      @BoatBusters  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@DragginLineOutdoors my understanding has always been if the flywheel and shaft are oriented in the same way they came off, and no other adjustments were made, you can remove the flywheel and put it back on without issue. I have done this a hundred times and have not had to re-time any of my outboards for top performance. But again, I am only an amateur mechanic with decent experience but I have no license or formal education so maybe someone that knows the OEM process could help answer that

    • @DragginLineOutdoors

    • @BoatBusters
      @BoatBusters  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@DragginLineOutdoors it’s not fun! I would definitely not get into any timer base jobs if you are not prepared to re-time the motor if you have to. You just never know what could get bumped around or finnicked with during the job. Luckily in my case the motor ran great and RPMs were perfect but just no way of knowing for sure if your project will have the same results. I wish you the best of luck though!

    How much time did it take you to do all this work? Earned per hour = ?

    • @BoatBusters
      @BoatBusters  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good question! Obviously parts take time to be delivered when I can’t buy them at a local shop so there are days where I don’t touch the project because I can’t move forward without them. Also this has been a lifelong hobby so labor hours may get a little stretched by me just bumping music in the garage and getting distracted… 😂 total time from purchase to sale for this one was about 2 weeks, but I’d say head down working / real labor hours maybe 15-20. It would be far less than 2 weeks, but I have a full time 40hr / week day job so I really only have evening hours and weekends to do this stuff right now. So with $2,000 profit I made roughly $100-135 per labor hour for this project. Sometimes I get lucky and find a great deal that requires way less work and that $ per hour number goes way up. All depends really! But getting paid to do what you love, even if only a little, is always the best feeling.

    dude, unlike mercury, omc outboards do not matter what gear you are in. Just leave the lower on and use needle nose pliers to move the shift shaft up or down but even easier is just shift the control to neutral.... the bolt does suck, i learned long ago to do the water-pump while carbs are off. that makes it all simple.:-).. oh... my experience? 52 years as a marine mechanic and shop owner.

    • @BoatBusters
      @BoatBusters  หลายเดือนก่อน

      The carburetor piece is great advice! However in my case and the tools available to me I just was unable to get the bolt back in without the shift rod being in reverse and I couldn’t get it to shift up with pliers… annoying - but not too hard to just pull the lower unit and put it right back in 👍🏼 as an amateur marine mechanic I know enough to fix most issues on these motors - but to hear some of those tips from the industry pros like you is always greatly appreciated!
