Nice work and presentation. I flip a few outboards too. Specialize in 1980's Honda 4 strokes - they are pretty much bulletproof. One thing that I do to give the buyer confidence and get top dollar is to pressure test the lower unit. You might have to make your own fitting to screw into the lower unit fill holes. Then use a bicycle pump to pump it up to around 10psi. Then soapy water to to check all the oil seals for any leaks. There's a lot of cash to be make on these old motors. I find that most of them have been sitting in grandpa's garage for many years and just need the carb cleaned, an impeller and a new fuel filter
@@jimdinthed absolutely! Never done pressure tests, but would be great to add to the presentation. Good advice!! Also those old Hondas are awesome, just tricky to find certain parts for for me!!
Hi I’d like some advice about an old Honda b100 that I picked up. When plugs are removed, I can’t seem to get any spark from them. I tried shooting some fuel down the carb and pulling with no signs of life. Is there a points ignition underneath the belt pulley? How do I remove that?

I can tell you exactly what the problem is. There’s a hole burned through the water jacket in the “cylinder head “ it’s pumping exhaust gas into the jacket and you get mostly gas and back pressure at the pee hole

Most creative ask for subscribers I've seen in a while! You got me! Here's a question for you: if the motor fails either the compression test or spark test, what does that mean? Do you turn down buying it, or use that to negotiate a cheaper price? If you fix any that don't have compression or spark, I'd love to see a video on that too.
@@Lhopsecker Haha I appreciate that!! And those are great questions. If the motor fails to pass a compression test, I personally don’t buy it at all. Now somebody that’s into restoration for fun will likely be able to buy it for next to nothing with no compression, however to me this is just as much of a business as it is a hobby and the time spent rebuilding a powerhead is not worth it at all (and those parts are not cheap)… if the engine fails a spark test, I welcome that with open arms! I changed a few impellers and fixed a big Mercury ignition coil. Boating was fun but it always seemed to be a money pit. Take it easy, Casey
If you just want a motor and aren’t in a side hustle you may not have a compression tester (although not expensive). Places like O’Reilly, Autozone, etc have tools like that and maybe even a timing light as loan-a-tools. Just keeping things cheaper

I wish you continuing success in your future videos. Viele Grüße aus Deutschland.
Lawnmovers and powertools like chainsaws also make for a good refurbish-and-flip sidehustle. Next thing is used Cars of course but thats much more work to dig into. My favorite is Campervans. I can buy them for a good price in the cold season and fix them up during winter and sell them right before summer when everyone wants to go on vacation.
@@Igeltod good idea! The reason I love flipping boats and outboards so much is there are no limits to how many you can sell in a year.. cars you get 5 title transfers per year before you need a dealers license in my state, boats have no such laws! Not sure on campers though will need to look into that
Great video. I'm also from ohio. It might be worth mentioning in one of your videos that a potential buyer needs to make sure that if the engine is over 10 horsepower it needs to have a title. This varies state-by-state, but it definitely applies to Ohio. I see so many great deals in Indiana and Kentucky but they rarely have the paperwork to meet Ohio's demands.
Wow you really do a great job overhauling that outboard. Impeller, thermostat, ignition coils, fuel pump, clean carb and your going through the trouble of cleaning water jacket. A true overhaul. One more thing perhaps worth mentioning is the length of the shaft. I mistakenly bought an extra long shaft 1990’s Merc 9.9 2 stroke brand new in the box . Need to sell it and buy a standard shaft length for my boat.
I've got an old 2 stroke 100HP hard to brand engine on my boat, 1988 sea ray seville -- I've been trying to troubleshoot a small oil/fuel leak on it that i cant find. comes up when resting if full or after running only. Thanks for the vid!

Fuel pumps a cheap like $16 on 50-200hp models if you are willing to buy Chinese parts. I don’t recommend so rebuild kits of your OEM pump can be had for about the same price
@@markcollins5026 if a seller refuses a compression check that is NOT somebody you want to be doing business with! There is no reason to refuse a test unless there’s something you’re trying to hide. @@joehozzy2616 thank you for that! And no, this lower unit was not the original factory lower for this motor and was causing the shift handle to be off-centered a tad. Should’ve explained that a bit better!
While doing the first test, checking whether the engine turns freely, wiggle the flywheel back and forth to feel whether there is any play. Any play means something is loose on the crankshaft, connecting rods, piston. Bad news if there is play in the engine.

To help free dirt and debris in the cooling system in older o/b engines, we always started the engine, let it run for a minute or two to heat up the thermostat, then we’d shoot a couple short blasts of compressed air into the end of telltale tube. This reverse pressure that happens when doing this often loosens debris enough that cooling water can pump it free, allowing water to circulate properly through the system. Hope this helps!
@@BoatBusters I used to do o/b service several decades ago. 80% of the time this cleared obstructions and saved us a lot of time and owners a good deal of money.
@@BoatBusters usually if you give it a real short zap of air, that did the trick. It’s important that you see evidence of water circulating and exiting upper or lower drains though. If no water is seen pumping, shut the engine down and shoot air. Then restart to see if you get flow. Don’t let the engine run long without evidence of descent flow.
$150. in my area of the Southeast might get you the gas tank! lol And I know that l'm late to the dance but I'd love to see you cleaning out the water jackets! Based on this video and the info given, as well as the no nonsense delivery I'm now a new sub! A few years ago I bought a used boat and 40 hp motor that was running great during the test ride. Unfortunately on my first outing something happened and it bogged and died rather quickly. It was about a late 80's Evinrude and to marine shops (one a friend) said that it wasn't worth fixing. I wound up buying another 40 from a guy that works on engines. He checked mine out and said the compression was good but the coils were gone and most of the wires were melted. He checked to bore, rings and pistons and everything looked good so he cleaned that part up and put in new rings, coils and wiring as well as new impeller and rebuilt the carb. It was less than $800 parts and labor. So I now have a spare!
Worked on sleds lawn engine chain saws other. Small motors like that. But never a boat motor looks easy to do. Looks like I got some hunting for a boat motor to do and try it. Thanks bro

I solved This problem was taking off the covers in front of the pistons and on the side of the Pistons and I dropped the lower and I shot air with a compressor through the pipe where the water would go up and some stuff shot out of them and my problem solved. Try that, and it might solve the problem. And get like a wire and play around inside to unclog it.

Hi I’m in Ohio as well!! I do vintage motorcycles.. I’ve run across a few boat motors. With a bit of tlc they have always made me money ..
Yeah man for sure let's see you do it, clean out those channels.
I want to see a full stream coming out of that water jet.
I remember working on Old Johnson's back when I had old flat boats. I changed a few impellers and fixed a big Mercury ignition coil.
Boating was fun but it always seemed to be a money pit.
Take it easy,
Casey
If you just want a motor and aren’t in a side hustle you may not have a compression tester (although not expensive). Places like O’Reilly, Autozone, etc have tools like that and maybe even a timing light as loan-a-tools. Just keeping things cheaper
@@hugoglenn9741 very true, and great point!
You gained a new subscriber! And, I, don't even own a boat or even in the market to buy one!! I just enjoyed how easily and clearly that explained in what to look for... And how to break down the process in the motor to find what could be at fault. You're a natural tescher. And! Thank you for keeping the background music subtle. I wish you continuing success in your future videos. Viele Grüße aus Deutschland.
@@E.10Camp thank you so much!
Love working with the old small outboards working with a 7.5 Honda .
Yes, my whole dream is to find outboard motor school and a class how to do this and live. 😅 Lake life. Very awesome
@@donduck6195 yeah Ohio law is annoying sometimes for sure… will be sure to mention that in the future! Appreciate it
I have never owned a boat and never will but...I love watching your videos, please carry on with this one!

Excellent job.
Yes of course it would be extremely informative to show us how to pull the head & clean the water jackets.
Please make a second video going over the water cooling. I'm looking to buy a smaller fishing boat for lakes, and I also live in Ohio. This will save me some $ because you explain it very well. I have basic knowledge working on small engines, and this video relieved some of my stress about small outboards. I subbed also, and will watch outboard repair videos, you do a great job.
With the coils looking melted l, why didn't you pop off the thermostat to check for clogged cooling causing overheating and melting.
You can filter sold items on marketplace to see what your item is going for in recent purchases
I would definitely love to see you pull the power head. Don't believe I need to do it to my outboard. But I'm definitely looking at flipping Motors in the future. As Ithey say knowledge is power. Thanks for sharing yours.

Thank you!! Glad to have to here 🤝
One more thing perhaps worth mentioning is the length of the shaft.
The kind of spark tester you can adjust the gap on is better..... you should be able to hear the snap and see a strong blue spark.
I stumbled upon this video, never seen ur channel b4. Absolutely loved the video. I know some, about outboards only from owning 3 of them and fixing them (sometimes). Very informative! Fuel pumps a cheap like $16 on 50-200hp models if you are willing to buy Chinese parts. I don’t recommend so rebuild kits of your OEM pump can be had for about the same price
Man, nice so does the seller object to you taking out the plugs to do a compression check !
@@markcollins5026 if a seller refuses a compression check that is NOT somebody you want to be doing business with! There is no reason to refuse a test unless there’s something you’re trying to hide. When my buyers purchase engines from me I gladly allow them to check compression either with their gauge or mine.
Hi, was it in forward gear when you tried to start it? Great video. Keep them coming.
@@Mrfrenchdeux another great tidbit I should’ve mentioned 💯
I would love to see you pull the power head. Drinking a beer now watching the transformation of these motors. Keep it up loving the videos.
Cheers man I appreciate you 🍻
Would really like to watch u do the power head clean out 🤙🤙
subscribed so I could see more. If it sparks and doesn't run, then my next step is getting the carb cleaned. Other than the order in which you did things, I really like what you are doing to this motor. I'll have to look around to try to find a 15 for 150!
@@FrankLadd I appreciate it!! And yeah carb is always my go-to after good spark but no start, the only reason I did plugs and coils first was just how awful of condition the ignition coils were in physically… needed done so might as well just do it!!
YT has clearly been listening to my thoughts, because I have a decent Evenrude 15 that I got running pretty well, but I know it could go way better and I'd like to hone my skills to get it there. Subscribed.
@@johnnypea43 thank you man!
Yes new video on cleaning water jacket!
@@c5back9 super interesting tip!!! Much appreciated. I’m definitely going to give it a try
@@c5back9 for sure. Yeah these cylinders were at a good temperature but just would make me feel better with a better stream!
Similar to using a plunger on a toilet

Thanks I want to see power head disassembly! New sub!
$150. in my area of the Southeast might get you the gas tank! lol And I know that l'm late to the dance but I'd love to see you cleaning out the water jackets!
@@jimjordan5630 that’s awesome!! Really appreciate the sub as well 🤝

I sold a perfectly good 10 hp Johnson some years ago because I didn't know to check the o-ring in the fuel hook up fitting . It would start and run and then instantly die when I gave the gas . Frustration got me on that one . 😢😮
