Man! This is exactly what my outboard does... I haven't watched the rest of the video yet and I am on the edge of my seat! Woo! I'm back! That celebration joy ride was epic and I am wondering what is lurking in the bowls on my carbs...
Love the videos! This outboard doesn't have VRO though. It is called OMS (Oil Metering System). OMS, which was introduced in 1993, was known to be very reliable and if the pump did fail it over oiled by default. As long as the tank is free of water and the sock is not blocked, it will run forever. I run them on all my engines. VRO and OMS get a bad wrap from the 1st couple years of VRO (which were the only problem years). OMC then went to VRO2, which would also over oil in the event of a failure. There were bad oil injection systems out there, such as Mercury with their plastic gears, however since VRO2 OMC's systems have been very reliable. Most blame the VRO or OMS when they score a cylinder when in reality that cylinder went lean due to a dirty carb. If the VRO or OMS would have failed with a no oil condition, all cylinders would be effected as the oil is mixed before the carbs. To each their own but there are a lot of myths out there, plus if you have to replace the fuel pump I don't blame anyone for converting due to the high price of a new VRO or OMS pump.
@@EricGaskamp super interesting- you’ve earned my subscription! Thanks for sharing. Totally agree with what you’re saying- in my business of acquiring some cheap used boats to which I do not know the service history I tend to just opt to premix though… somehow helps me sleep at night 🙂
@@BoatBusters in your case I don't blame you one bit! Also thank you for the sub! When I get a "new" boat with VRO or OMS I always premix the first tank at 100:1, as a precaution, to make sure the oiler is working. That will at least save you in case the previous owner trashed the system lol. Then when i see the oil level is dropping as expected I'll go with straight gas in the tank. Keep up the good work! I always watch for your videos to come out!
For your no spark get some blue shower contact spray and hit all your ignition points. It will clean any possible electrical carbon on the firing points needed for spark.
Dang you got my suspense up about what your plans are. I just got a 40hp Johnson tracker that had super dirty carbs and got mine purring just like your 50. I'm officially at a pontoon with a 90 Evinrude and 16' fishing boat with 45 Merc Mariner and then the 40 tracker. Note I do all the work on all of them just like you. Love your content
Awesome video and great potential with this pontoon boat. As a former auto mechanic and current small engine mechanic I can relate to the missing and reappearing tools - supernatural forces indeed. Oh, and I don't trust 2 stroke oil injectors either. Back in 1981 I owned a 1975 Yamaha RD350B - the oil injector failed while I was riding home from high school. At the time, I didn't know enough about engine repair to save the bike, so I sold it cheap to someone who wanted the parts.
You should do a video on how to turn a 9.9 hp motor into a 15 hp motor. With speed tests before and after. Many Yamaha 9.9 motors are the same as the 15 hp models but with a limiter in the carb system.
Excellent work and information, thanks for sharing! Liked, subscribed and now commented. I took my harbor freight tools for granted and all of them fell into the void but my Mac and Snap On tools are magically faithful by my side.
Cool project, when tearing apart dual carbs on an outboard, what needs to be done to keep everything in sync? My boat needs some work, I’m a little nervous I will mess something up with the carb settings.
I understand about losing the nut and the wrench. I have gottebn to where when I work on something, I just take the first nut off and throw it as far as I can just to get that part out of the way. Great video. Thanks.
Not much of a challenge, now if it were a Merc or Suzuki it would be different. Junk the oil injection, mix yer gas 50:1 and that motor will last another 30 or 40 years

Quick story about missing wrenches (AND PARTS) Had a huge job a few decades back where a youth group was having a summer camp. We took in their boats for complete refits and overhauls of the engines. One needed a complete rebuild. I had my crew doing the upholstery while I had the engine in the shop on the workbench. Nothing else there. Split it in half, machined the cylinders, assembled rods with .010 pistons and laid out the crank and every internal part. Turned around and that crankshaft was gone. Nobody was in the shop area but me. Everyone else was working their butts off. That crank was there and then poof...it was gone. We all looked for it. Around the buildings, everyone looked on and under that workbench and went through the shop. No place to be found. (N, NOBODY WAS MESSING WITH US).... We walked to the shop doors, everyone. still gone, you could see from the double doors everything on that damn table.... We started to do another search outside and I looked back again... it was sitting right on the table where I had laid it hours earlier... you tell me. WTH lol..... Kinda like the 1/2, 9/16 and 7/16 sockets and wrenches that just go poof and then appear someplace you swear you never went to lol.... Anyway... keep up the good stuff....
@@daddski1 that’s hilarious 🤣🤣 heard of a lot of tools disappearing but this is the first time a crankshaft has entered the void hahaha.. thanks for sharing though that’s too funny
Mercury and Yamaha both introduced mechanical oil pumps in the early 80s. Around the same time OMC did. The main difference however, is the fact that they don't randomly fail and cause the outboards to randomly blow up like OMC's injection system did. There's absolutely no reason these VRO pumps should fail like they do and absolutely no reason we should have to delete them. The 2 other major outboard companies of the time were able to make their oil pumps extremely reliable. 1984, the year OMC introduced oil injection, is the year their quality control went to absolute shit and the year that started the company's downward spiral to bankruptcy.
Hopefully I can get a reply, I have a 1993 mariner 90 and I have been chasing an issue with fuel delivery. I’ve replaced all the fuel lines and a new fuel pump. New fuel line from the tank to the motor and it’s the good hose without the plastic liner. Any suggestions would be awesome!

@@dean7416 really appreciate you my man! And no, an in line fuel filter should not cause any issues with restriction on its own (at least I have never had issues with it).. I am in the process of restoring a 1985 Scarab performance boat I just spent over two months rebuilding the engine I put in a nasty Comp Cam it has factory thru hull exhaust I hope the engine doesnt blow up on me when I fire it up and break in he cam no matter how many engines I rebuild I am always nervous, I am videoing the restoration on my TH-cam channel it will be a while before its up . I am in my late 60s been in a huge rut for years I parked this poor thing out in the weeds in 2014 and let it rot this year its hell no no more I want to get out and start doing shit . People here in my town are cold and dont want freinds unless they can use you or mooch off of you. Got tired of boat alone and I just parked it . If everythign goes good my bucket list is to take the boat to Cerud'alene Idaho I want to boat and camp . I have never done this ever man never been there. I want this so bad I can taste it . I want to hear that nasty cam through my thru hull and blast across the lake and haul ass . I am a 21 year old in an old body I refuse to give up! Love the video man great job you scored dude!

What do you think about doing a shock/decarboning treatment to clean up the carburetors on motor that's sat for a couple years?
Newer Johnson evinrudes don’t have VRO, it’s their OMS oiling system which is essentially failproof

Would adding an inline fuel filter restrict fuel flow and cause me to run lean? Thanks for any help!
@@dean7416 really appreciate you my man! And no, an in line fuel filter should not cause any issues with restriction on its own (at least I have never had issues with it)..
