I once had some Sims I hated. I moved them into a dumpy trailer and hung the Tragic Clown painting. It took awhile, but they died. And honestly, to this day the sheer trauma of it all makes it hard for me to even look at the painting in build/buy without guilt.
Tell me why I did the exact same and named the sims karen and Daren. Daren was a total slob meanwhile karen was evil and hated children, they would always fight and the trailer was a total fucking mess 💀
Fun fact about the Sims 4 "Such Tragedy!" moodlet text- it's a reference to the famous aria "Vesti la giubba" (Put on the costume) from the opera Pagliacci (Players/Clowns)! The actual line goes, "Laugh, Clown, at your broken love! Laugh of the pain that poisons your heart!" and it's sung by a character who realizes his wife and traveling co-star was having an affair but must get into costume and entertain the crowd regardless.
@@AriVirtual Haha, a lot of opera houses today have surtitles above the stage / it helps to know the plot behind each song before you go in (most playbills provide outlines and even interesting historical context), if that's what you're into! Otherwise the music and acting is often so expressive that you can understand roughly, anyways.
If I recall, he also goes to the doctor because he falls into such a deep depression, and the doctor tells him to go see a famous clown that's in town, and that'll cheer him up. And he goes "But doctor, I AM Pagliacci!" Which just really hammers home the tragic/funny note. The singer Pavarotti does an amazing rendition, and watching him even now always makes me cry haha. He's SO emotive and has a stunning voice! I highly suggest it to anyone who sees these comments and is curious!
@@nobleglobug Actually, that joke is from the comic series Watchmen (though it appears an older version existed in the 19th century featuring "Grimaldi" rather than Pagliacci), not the Leoncavallo opera! Pavarotti's rendition is beautiful. I'm weirdly partial to Mario Lanza's rendition, too

An update on this!! In the growing together expansion pack, the rec center has a tragic clown painting hung, allowing for the clown to spawn around your world :)
When I first played Sims 3 ( I think I was 17?) I saw him in the graveyard and looked him up out of curiosity and felt so bad for him that I moved him in with me and tried to make ambrosia so I could revive him and make him happy. He really tugged at my ol' heartstrings and he deserves happiness!
I developed a fear in clowns when i was a little kid and a clown got so close to my face that I could see the cracks in his makeup. I had nightmares about it. I'm mostly okay now as long as they leave me alone.
11:53 closer to the game release, the sims team added "annotations" to the release trailer that led to unlisted "easter egg" videos. That's one of them! There's 24 of them :)
Just as Critical Role has a lorekeeper, you should be employed as the lorekeeper for The Sims!! I would love to see a continuation of lore for The Sims 5.
I think his appearance in making magic was my favorite. I loved going to the magic town and trying to cheer him up and watching him ride around on his coaster.
i absolutely adore clowns, my great uncle was a professional clown + I use to dress up as Pierrot and we’d put on a show at family reunions back when I was little. Man I miss that
As a kid, I also thought you had to burn the portrait to get rid of the clown. I accidentally killed Bella Goth in the fire. But I saved, because the Goths were mourning, but they were free.
I love this series! I also want to say that I've got a petition: could you do a kind of "spin off" series on sims that appeared on TS4? There are some interesting characters, even if the lore is non-existent. For instance, what's up with the Fangs in San Myshuno? 👀
I mean, I'm not scared of clowns but also don't find them necessarily funny but when i saw actual proper clowns and how caring and loving they act with people/children Its actually really heartwarming to see. IT is not scary cause hes a clown but because of everything he does. You could put any monster there and it would be equally as disturbing tbh
I just legitimately am not scared of the movie IT. Pennywise irl would obviously be horrifying, but just watching the movie? Not at all. I've never seen an actual clown in person before but I'm sure they're actually really caring to their audiences, especially since they're usually small kids
Naw IT was fine to me tbh. I was actually more traumatized by clowns as kid naturally and i remember clearly i was in a shopping center on a holiday in Malaysia, they had a pair of clowns who are also miming, and i rmb the lady was dressed like Harlequinn in DC comics would, but full black and white, the man was red and white. My mom wanted me to take a photo with them and idk why their smiles and just not talking ( cuz they were miming) utterly terrifies me.

This is my favorite series as well - is there any way you could do a food theme? Maybe Freezer Bunny/Grilled Cheese/etc. - idk if there's any solid lore there but it could be fun.
I still remember the tragic clown apearing a lot, when I was playing the sims 1 with my Sister. It took us quite long to understand that we had to get rid of his picture... it was terrifiing for me as a kid...
Sorry if this has already been commented but another way to get the "Tragic Clown" moodlet in the Sims 3 was by using the Lightning Leap Atomic Molecular Arranger (L.L.A.M.A for short) in supernatural too many times. After using the machine, there's a chance for your sim to come out dressed as a tragic clown, and gave nearby sims negative moodlets.

One cool thing I learned recently is that, in The Sims 2, a picture of the Tragic Clown appears on the side of one of the milk cartons when you're making breakfast. They make it look like he's a missing person (which I guess he is since he's not in the second game)
I, too, have been playing Sims from the beginning and 9 year old me was TERRIFIED of Sims 1 Sunny, specifically his Portrait (which honestly? still scared of it, 0/10 would delete again) Like when he showed up in Superstar I'd be fine watching him hang around. Regular clowns don't generally bother me, but clowns that are intended to be scary/creepy absolutely do (thanks "IT"...).
I am aware that it is not the point of this video BUT What if Johnny Zest is Malcolm Landgraab? We all know that in Sims 3 Nancy and Geoffrey had one kid called Malcolm but in the Sims 4 they have two and Malcolm is the youngest son. But what if they both are Malcolms? Like the first one wasn't "good enough" for family as he wanted to be a Joke Star. And Nancy really liked the name, so when they kicked out "Johnny" they literally made themselves a new Malcolm... I also recall that Malcolm in the Sims 3 is ambitious and good whereas in the Sims 4 his traits are snob and evil. And guess who is ambitious? Johnny Zest. He is also outgoing which is a little bit reminiscent of TS3 Malcolm being good. And imo they look more similar (hair colour, fashion choice and overall appearance) then TS3 and TS4 Malcolms. I do not think that the lore is that deep but it was just something that came to mind when Johnny was briefly mentioned in this video. Sorry if this is a popular theory and for my english as it is not my first language.
Well, other than burning the painting: Call the clown-catchers. It's a bit expensive though but not quite as much as burning your house! They will also remove the painting to keep him from coming back-- or make your sim happy. Not easy what with him constantly bothering you. He is good enough for social though. But-- blue potion with the chemistry kit, hot tub, happiness charm or a visit to a certain lady in yellow may well help.

"Sonny"? Was that a difference in the UK releases? The Tragic Clown's name has been "Sunny" in the editions I've played... edit @7:30 - Nah. Clowns were considered terrifying long before Stephen King managed to turn it into a meme back in the 80s (yes, I'm old enough to remember a time before "IT").
I've always related to the sort of Pierrot type pantomime character so this is just further evidence of the representation that The Sims has always provided us compared to other games.

That CAMS line absolutely killed me 😂
Same
Geriatric simmers unite lol
Honestly IT traumatised me, I cannot stand clowns anymore
Me with a phobia of clowns: ... it's plumbella I'll be okay...
Didn't plan on starting my day with a horror film and here we are
I've always related to the sort of Pierrot type pantomime character so this is just further evidence of the representation that The Sims has always provided us compared to other games.
