- Howard Jones performing at Live Aid in front of 72,000 people in Wembley Stadium, London on the 13th July, 1985. The event was organised by Sir Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise funds for the Ethiopian famine disaster. Broadcast across the world via one of the largest satellite link-ups of all time, the concerts were seen by around 40% of the global population.

Heard him on interview today talking about this performance, he chose it because it’s his favourite song and a hopeful message relevant to the occasion, he thought he started off rushing into the song but once the crowd started singing along he was surprised yet delighted, a moment he still holds dear, he’s one of the best performers from the eighties in my opinion
I saw him at Red Rocks in Colorado in the 80's and it was one of the best concerts I've ever seen even still.
You can definitely hear he was a bit nervous until he settled in to it. Who wouldn't be? I've played in front of 1000 and was a total nervous wreck!

Not only was he nervous, according to interviews he was terrified of performing live in general and threw himself into it to confront his fear and overcome it... so even smaller gigs would've been difficult for him. Knowing that I don't even understand how he managed to as much as get out on stage at Live Aid ;D. Very impressive.@@dannyboy7715

Most musicians today can’t play one chord on the piano and he played like this with the world watching! Amazing! 👏
Most real musicians can play more than only one chord at the piano. But ALL real musicians or even „hobby-musicians“ can play a number of chords or many on their instrument. Often it is the guitar. Or they can't be called musicians. The exeption: Drummer or percussionists if doing only that very important job.:)
As the story goes he wasn't even scheduled to play, just rocked up and they slotted him on, hence he sounds a bit sounds rushed. In my humble opinion it was a quality performance that was among the top of the day (of course Queen were unrivalled)
@@kb4777 Supposedly he was supposed to do two songs, with an acapella version of Life In One Day with his backing singers but there wasn't the time.
Also interesting is that before he went on Phil Collins warned him that the bottom of the piano was iffy and so he had to take that into account when playing (bashing the lower keys quite hard).

Saw him yesterday in Berlin, he sang it at the end, pure goosebumps, he is still brilliant and amazing with 67!!!
Watching this, hearing this, and singing this, on repeat, has been my salvation during quarantine. Holding fast to this gem from the past has kept me hopeful toward an unncertain future. TY and I ❤ u HJ.

I saw him in Glasgow just a few years after this, where he played in a church which was used as a practice hall by the Scottish National Orchestra. It was just him, piano and a girl on percussion, and it was fantastic. He was so down to earth, and had the time to speak to anyone at the end of the concert, one that I will never forget.
This is one of the reasons Live Aid can never be repeated today.. There's not enough talent or true live performers in today's music scene
Live aid was a once in a lifetime experience.
There is, if anything I'd say there's more people around now with the talent of the biggest stars from back then. But that's just not what the people respond to anymore, It's sidelined and people have to LOOK for it (But it is there if you look). I'm hoping for a big rock comeback, it's overdue.
Absolutely... spellbinding talent... what a courageous plucky thing to do in front of the massive Crowd and the billions watching. Extraordinary.

Not really. Back in the 80's we didn't have TH-cam, Netflix, HBO etc etc. Almost everyone watched Live Aid on TV since there were not many alrernatives in media.

This was a major highlight on a day full of highlights...The great Howard Jones with one of his best ever songs...That single voice, the brilliant piano playing, The audience singing along The day etc, it just ticked all the boxes and some...Watching live on the day I got chills/goose bumps, and every time I have watched it since it has the same effect
What a wonderful performance on that beautiful summer's day. His youthful voice was resonant and full of passion.

I met him personally at the concert in Berlin 2022 and asked him if he was excited to be playing live in front of billions of people at that moment. He tells me that he was very, very excited even though everything was going great when he played the song. A great artist and person.

Such a great musician and performer (both live and studio). Shame he was only given a one-song-timeslot at Live Aid.
He was originally meant to have a slot for two songs. His backing singers (Afrodisiak) rehearsed "Life in One Day". Howard has recalled that they ended up only performing it backstage but to David Bowie and one other notable artist that I fail to recall.

Here live with a piano only 'cause he learned to play it well. But Howard was one of the first performer using the keyboard only to make (good) music! At least at his first album.

I never realized this song was a hit but I guess it must have been if this many people know the lyrics and seem to care for it. When I listened to "Human's Lib" back then it never stood out as a song that would work as a single but it was the third single from that album and I guess people liked it. Wonderful that such a powerful song would be appreciated that way :).

Whatched Howatd live for the first time at the Birmingham symphony hall 2023 and it blew me away he along with his band were absolutely fantastic and i would definitely see him again.

Just saw him last night at the CNE in Toronto. He played this song early in the set, and mentioned the Live Aid performance. He is a great entertainer and really works hard to ensure the fans have a good time at the show! Voice still great, and of course an amazing musician!

@@matthewphilip1977 The song is about the origin of the Universe, but whereas many here have "Christianicized" it, it is actually about the origin of the Universe, from the Buddhist and Advaita Vedanta (Hinduism) perspective. The "She" is not humanity. Both the "He" and the "She" are the same original being (pure consciousness, Brahman). He uses He in the first verse and She in the second verse to defeat the duality of gender. The point of the song is that everything is Brahman; everything is the original being. If you want to put it into Christian language, "everything is God" and "God is in everything" and everything is "made of God" - there is no other substance in existance. Seperation is an illusion; the illusion of the game, or of creation. So the original being makes his/her creation and then "loses herself in it". She extends her consciousness into finite objects (all living things) that forget their true nature. The meaning of life is to remember who one is; not a seperate 'person', ego, or soul, but the one. At the time of writing, Jones was (and still is) exploring and practicing Buddhism. This story is the root of Buddhism. We are all inter-dependent and connected, because we are all "it". I recently visited a Nichiren Buddhist meeting in Durham, and Jones had been in attendance there just one week prior (he is friends with the group leader, through the SGI UK organisation). Nichiren Buddhist - like every form of Buddhism has non-duality at it's heart. Seperation is an illusion. We are all aspects or viewpoints (where the word 'ego comes from), of the original being in this song. Nichiren is just a way of practicing, that works with the law of cause and effect. Other forms of Buddhism; Zen, Theravada, Mahayana, etc, have alternative practices and emphases, but all are rooted in the non-duality that is the basis of this beautiful song.

Seems like just yesterday I watched Howard perform this...he's still so ultra talented...anyone who see's my post check out his website..has 2 new box sets coming out Nov. 30....can't wait to get them!!! He sounds just as awesome today as he did then..no, I'm no publicist..just have always admired his talent..this is just one of many masterpieces he's written, he is a gem of a human being as well. Interestingly the paino was Queen's touring piano and wasn't in the best of shape, just before going on stage Phil Collins stopped him to tell him that the the lower part of the piano was iffy and you might need to hit thise keys a bit harder.
All that and he still nailed it!

Yes phil collins warned him keys where sticky so howard made sure he gave the keys a heavy press to make sure of it not sticking
