      If they are still there, check out my comments/opinion on this one, long/short, this is when they were genuinely never in doubt, in the uk we've listened to the other opinion of queen and their performance of which they were veterans in that stage by then but U2 absolutely owned Wembley stadium that day, i was 12 years old and vividly remember it, they more than arrived at the top table that day , 2 years later the Joshua tree! I needn't go on.

      These were peak years for u2. Brian May have got the Mercury rising for some in the crowd but I still say Bono had the 'Edge' that day in 1985
      Im not sure if there was a best act at Live Aid, but the singing and performance of this band on that Saturday in July 1985 was up there at the top ! Bonos singing is off the scale, the feeling he got in to his singing is amazing

      When men had the essence of, strong masculinity, and that essence is a very good look! ❣️

    • @lisabrooks3571
      @lisabrooks3571 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      I agree mostly but just like ‘feminity’, the concept of masculinity is hard to keep up with and changes within different times and cultures. Bono is showing his heart, tenderness and sensitivity here. Long hair, normal unsculpted body, not an ounce of aggression or arrogance here. It looks like beautiful strong masculinity to me but men are often conditioned or expected to express masculinity in more aggressive ways. In the same way that what is fashionably ‘feminine’ (mostly anything artificial and consumerist) is not what I see as admirably feminine.

      That roar when he jumps down off the stage gets me every single time I come back to this performance. It's on my watch later continually.
      We wrongly were fans of U2 in our teens because they were seen as Rebel or Republican supporters.
      Tricolour at Scottish football matches. When he made the statement at Redrock that Sunday Bloody Sunday was not a rebel song it made us respect them all the more. Ireland moving on but that hatred and sectarianism in Scotland is as rife today as it was in the early 80s.

    This performance kickstarted the European leg of Live Aid into life. There's been a lot of revisionism since Freddie's death about who stole the show...trust me, watching at the time, people were asking, "Who are these Irish boys??" U2 brought absolute magic (and no little drama) into proceedings. As the evening drew in, Elton John and Queen built on this momentum, making for a magical night of music.

      Yes he was brilliant Jonathan.. Bono's PA on BAD at Live Aid, Greg Carroll, was tragically killed 12 months after Live Aid performance . Greg Carroll, a New Zealand Maori whom Bono and the band met while on tour in NZ. Bono asked him to join the Band on their world tour. Greg eventually he became Bono's personal assistant. That was him on Live Aid, it was magic watching him effortlessly following Bono, knowing where and when he needed him.
      Greg was riding Bono's Harley back to Bono's house in Dublin on a wet rainy night when a car drove out in front of him.
      Bono had flown to Texas to sing with Willie Nelson that day, but when he heard the news he flew back to Ireland immediately.
      Bono, Ali, and other members of the U2 organisation then flew with Carroll’s body to New Zealand, met his family and attended his funeral. Bono sang “Let it Be” and “Knocking on Heaven’s Door” in tribute to his late friend. Bono wrote “One Tree Hill.” in memory of Greg. One Tree Hill is a place in NZ that Greg took the band to when he met them first. So Gregs death inspired 'One Tree Hill' R.I.P Greg.. you helped make U2's Live Aid performance special.

    I saw this live on MTV, and I think this performance of "Bad" was by far the greatest live performance I have ever seen. Every member of U2 and that huge crowd at Wembley Stadium were absolutely brilliant. This was not one of their better known songs at the time, and it was so different from the album version. And I think this song captured the spirit of that incredible day, "wide awake, I'm not sleeping." And thanks to MTV for not loading up their broadcast with commercials and talk during the performances like the US network TV broadcast.

I agree with you that Bad wasn’t well known even though this performance and in future tours it got a run out .
