    Jesus Christ....
I tried to get an apartment and they required that my monthly salary was 3 times my rent...
They said the whole apartment industry in that area required that.
But..... if you divide my monthly pay into thirds, not a single apartment was available at that rate or lower.
I was making more than minimum wage and the rent would have been half my take home pay. But I was fine with that.
I just don't get why they care about your job.
All that should matter is that you can pay the rent.🤷🏻‍♀️

That is because paying more that 30% of your income into rent is called "Financial Rental Stress".
You can not get a mortgage (old rules) if the repayments exceed 30% of your income either.
The Real Estate Companies and Landlords do not want you to default on the rent and then have to go through the eviction process.

That's the way it is in Massachusetts. As long as you make more than the rent amount they can't say anything about it or it falls into discrimination territory. It was something like (for housing) you can't discriminate based on a person's income or where that income comes from. So someone relying on assistance could still get a place to live.

Meanwhile I'm paying less than $1400 for a nice one bedroom in downtown Pittsburgh. Makes me glad I left Florida

Same problem when I was looking for a place is southern California back in 1997. In the low income housing you needed to make more than 3 times the rent but less than 1.5 times the poverty rate. It was an impossible standard. The only way to meet it was to have 3 or 4 working adults on the lease. The rent was one third everyone's combined income and the poverty amount was higher for four people than it is for one.

Yeah I went through this last time I was looking for an apartment earlier this year. I basically gave up and just built a cabin in the woods and my brother-in-law's land.
