We discuss the plea deal and release of Julian Assange with press freedom advocate Trevor Timm. “Thankfully, Julian Assange is finally going free today, but the press freedom implications remain to be seen,” says Timm, who explains the U.S. espionage case against Assange, which was opened under the Trump administration and continued under Biden. Timm expresses disappointment that Biden chose to continue prosecuting Assange rather than demonstrating his stated support of press freedom. If convicted, Assange could have been sentenced to 175 years in U.S. prison, which Timm calls a “ticking time bomb for press freedom rights.”

After 15 years of persecution and 12 of incarceration, first in exile in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, then in Belmarsh high security prison solitary confinement in the London area, where a UN Special Rapporteur on Torture concluded Assange had been tortured, he will finally be able to go home to his wife and children. His crime, exposing US Military crimes against humanity, and other crimes, which were crimes documentation was given to his organization, Wikileaks, for publication. The NY Times and other important news sources published Wikileaks information. This was a frontal attack on journalism. Terrified of being tortured, his legal team and supporters have been fighting his extradition for many years. This is such a relief. I hope nothing goes wrong in his stopover to sign papers.

As an Australian Viet Vet, I feel that by having the USA as a so called friend, who needs enemies, surely we should reconsider our relationship with the USA and also with Britain.
