Deep Space Nine has some of the greatest space battles ever put to film. Just imagine getting to see these on the big screen and you will realize they are certainly on a par with any space battles that they ever had on Star Wars (which I dearly love also.) And perhaps even better!!
Just finished watching every season of DS9. Even though I didn't keep up with this show like I did with TNG when I was younger and the Defiant was the reason why I tuned in back in the day I loved that ship. Now that I've seen every DS9 episode it's now my favorite Star Trek series. All these years later I still think the Defiant is awesome and love it even more. It was Starfleets Bad Ass Assault Ship. Wish they would have made 1 last movie combining The Defiant, Voyager and the Enterprise E in ending the Dominion War so we could have seen all 3 ships fight their Hulls Off along with the involvement of all 3 Captain's (Starfleets Finest) working in collaboration to save the Federation.

Yeah, DS9 battles almost always lacked the shield effects. Always pissed me off. Voyager on the other hand, has perfect shield effects on every battle. TNG has it sometimes, and sometimes it doesn’t

Dominion shields vacilate between being able to withstand 6 QUANTUM torpedo hits to being destroyed by mere 6 disruptor fire from a frickin Bird of Prey.
They actually stated I believe in the show, that they learned how to tune weapons to match Dominion ships shields after they studied that captured fighter.

Klingons use disruptors instead of Phasers which also have a noted in universe explanation of ruining shields. They “disrupt” their shield patters all together. However from that point on with the shields done it does still seem easy to crack the hull armor with old as fuck birds of prey. But hell. The Miranda class is out there and I thought there was an excelsior class in there somewhere.

Klingons attack (1:35) - DS9 gets all kinds of old-school and savage, takin names, etc. Dominion attacks (12:40) - DS9 is all like "pew pew... this is way too much like hard work", it's like the weapons officer was too busy posting selfies on Instagram to give a fuck. Lol.
Exactly in the Klingons one, ds9 shoots almost as if it had rapid fire, and when the dominion show up, it shoots so slow and not precise, while the ships weren't even moving as fast as the sklingon ships were before.

Yeah, I mean, all I saw was Birds of Prey and the Defiant firing and wrecking whole Dominion fleets, and whenever the Federation fields larger vessels than the Defiant they get blown by either Jemhedar fighters or Breen defensive platforms.

Deep Space 9 was the vest star trek series because of the space battles. Some of the storytelling from the other series was good, but DS9'S space battles were the best. I just wish paramountwould remaster DS9 like they did with TOS and TNG, but in 4k.

Its a mash up, that wasn't actually seen in Way of the Warrior Pt. II. That's from "Dramatis Personae" where the Klingon ship came back from the Gamma quadrant infected with the paranoia virus, and the main characters all started plotting a mutiny against each other while Sisko make a clock......
I recommend to watch this vid with 1,5 x speed, it looks even more realistic. In reality, most modern battles are quick and fast and you don't have almost no time to decide or analyze it, so I think that'd go same for space battles if you use starships with warp drive and impulse drive... anyway, DS9 did a very good job with those battles. I especially love that high-pitched disruptor shots of Klingon bird of prey :D
Have to love during the dominion war the romulan warbird (probably the most powerful mass produced federation alliance ship at the time) was relegated to basically being cannon fodder, all you seen of them in battles was them in pieces or on fire. Rarely seen them firing or destroying anything of note. Also, unless you were on the defiant it seemed no ships had shields. Still bemuses me why the ktinga was firing phaser blasts out of its torpedo bay, its disruptor banks are meant to be on its "wing" tips but they never really did a good job on the tv shows of establishing that, i recall it firing disruptors form the "wing" tips on tng episode with the frozen klingons awakening along with TMP footage (more like a single still image of it from the front) of the ship but that was about it.
Only in the Dominion war battles, every other occurrence made it pretty clear these were ships to be feared. At least the equal of a Galaxy class in power.

Quantum torpedoes have a higher yield than photon torpedoes and the defiant only has quantums (makes sense). However, the flagship (Enterprise E) has both Going off the battles in Nemesis they have very few Quantums (only used when firing at the scimitar thanks to Troi's ridiculous ability to locate a cloaked ship), about 4 or 5 (blue) torpedoes to the majority of photons (orange) torpedoes. We often see ships blown up with just one shot and yet the same class in another episode could take a lot more. I often wonder is the creators of the films have ever actually watched Star Trek!
Scimitar was a Reman ship, and their warlord was basically Human. Hence the disrupter/photon armament. In addition the Romulans and Klingons did often have photon torpedoes on their ships. Quantum torpedoes are not very maneuverable, and unlike photons are never seen to home round corners. Defiant has all its primary weapons facing forward as that is the aspect it is designed to fight at, so yes, just having quantums makes sense. Enterprise-E also only has quantum tubes facing forward (unlike Defiant, it has a lot of weaponry facing other ways though) - but flying straight at a ship with 52 disrupter banks, over 20 torpedo tubes, and SECONDARY shielding is generally considered 'suicide', hence most of the battle the quantums cannot be brought to bear, which is why photons are mainly used. Troi didnt miraculously locate a cloaked ship. She located Shinzon, who must have left some residual sub-space artifacts in her brain after he psy-raped her. Obviously Shinzon wasnt floating around in deep space, he was on his ship - so she fired torpedoes straight at Shinzon's skull knowing they would be 'intercepted' by the cloaked ship.

A Galaxy-class when it means to KILL, is a fearsome opponent. The Galaxy-class ships should have been slaying Dominion and Cardassian ships left and right!
This battle was done with models, not CGI (apparently when Ronald D Moore told them what he wanted, he got a bit of a 'LOL ... oh shit, you're serious?' back from the company, but damn if they didn't find a way to make it work and not break the bank). That money shot of the Defiant doing the whole 'Move bitch, get out the way...' and smashing right THROUGH one of the Jem'Hadar ships when it refuses to do so, still really stands up.

What are those ships firing blue phasers? Defiant seems to be always picking them off, their weapons cant even knock a runabout out, yet they blew a federation cruiser up by rambing it!
The Dominion ships look like the water beetles "skimmer" that were in the pool. Remember those that dove down and came back up? Not the spider looking things. My sister used to call them boatmen.
After watching this again for like the 15th million time I wonder why there was no silent class vessels and all of Deep Space Nine battles especially the big Dominion War the Enterprise that was a sovereign-class

In the episode "The Way of The Warrior," DS9 vs the Klingons. It is mentioned during the episode that they never had time to test the new weapons array. Sisko says their is no time like the present. That's why torpedoes where firing in all directions. By the time the Dominion attacked the station everything had been tested. DS9 didn't waste any shots in that battle.
The Klingons was much cooler and could out drink anyone in the Empire. For the destroyers the Klingons ordered them on the dark side web but don't tell nobody.
I know this will get me tagged as a Tolkien fan,but a good other name for Defiant would be Grond(the mace of Morgoth not the battering ram)cos its so badass. Or Bonecracker!

If two Alien races fight out a battle in the space a lethal one the chances are atleast some one will survive in the end and chances are he or she will be the one who will have to start all over again to prepare for another Battle to be fought between them and some other alien race so that they can survive that battle too and than prepare for another one in the future but than you are never sure you will end up winning that battle too or you will loose it
One thing I didn’t like about DS9‘a portrayal of space battles, they completely lost the scale. A Bird of Prey is not a fighter, yet more often than not they are shown blowing up from the first shot.

It's amazing how much time and effort went into the special effects!! And when computer graphics became the norm, the battles got bigger!!

It came down to production time and costs of doing the shield impact animations. Shields are more effective against torpedoes than armor.

This battle was done with models, not CGI (apparently when Ronald D Moore told them what he wanted, he got a bit of a 'LOL ... oh shit, you're serious?' back from the company, but damn if they didn't find a way to make it work and not break the bank). That money shot of the Defiant doing the whole 'Move bitch, get out the way...' and smashing right THROUGH one of the Jem'Hadar ships when it refuses to do so, still really stands up.

Yes, DS9 certinally used more and more CGI as time went on - and made it possible to go bigger and bolder and made the Dominion War possible.

What are those ships firing blue phasers? Defiant seems to be always picking them off, their weapons cant even knock a runabout out, yet they blew a federation cruiser up by rambing it!

The Dominion ships look like the water beetles "skimmer" that were in the pool. Remember those that dove down and came back up? Not the spider looking things. My sister used to call them boatmen.
Damn they must've been so desperate, even the Nebula-class science vessel joined the battle at 22:12
After watching this again for like the 15th million time I wonder why there was no silent class vessels and all of Deep Space Nine battles especially the big Dominion War the Enterprise that was a sovereign-class

Pretty sure ds9 was just using spray and pray tactics. Much after than individually targeting and you're pretty likely to hit something with 30+ ships swarming you
Or maybe tactic. Between visible ships can be another ones cloaked . So spred fire to "free space" maybe should be only this. Chance to hit cloaked ships.
In the episode "The Way of The Warrior," DS9 vs the Klingons. It is mentioned during the episode that they never had time to test the new weapons array. Sisko says their is no time like the present. That's why torpedoes where firing in all directions. By the time the Dominion attacked the station everything had been tested. DS9 didn't waste any shots in that battle.

If two Alien races fight out a battle in the space a lethal one the chances are atleast some one will survive in the end and chances are he or she will be the one who will have to start all over again to prepare for another Battle to be fought between them and some other alien race so that they can survive that battle too and than prepare for another one in the future but than you are never sure you will end up winning that battle too or you will loose it
i recall in the 90s people said ds9 had no good action scenes.

One thing I didn’t like about DS9‘a portrayal of space battles, they completely lost the scale. A Bird of Prey is not a fighter, yet more often than not they are shown blowing up from the first shot.
I always thought Deep Space 9 was the best Star Trek show. my favorite characters were Sisko and Wil Riker
If we include Shields, nemesis seems like the winner.
