The iPhone has long been regarded as the best video camera you can get on a phone, but the Samsung Galaxy Ultra phones have an advantage on the competition with its zoom capabilities.
I had the opportunity to attend the Latin Billboard Music Awards ceremony where I was able to capture footage of the live performances, far away from the stage. I figured it was the perfect opportunity to test the video capabilities of both the iPhone 14 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra from 2021.
I called my friend Nikki to help me review the footage. She's attended several K-pop concerts and she runs a TikTok fan cam account.

Phones being tested are the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, and the Apple iPhone 14 Pro.
The iPhone 14 Pro has three cameras: ultrawide, 1X, and 3X zoom.
The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra has three similar cameras, but it has two zoom cameras (3X and 10X) making it an ideal choice for capturing things from a far distance.
The test:
Both phones were set to 4K resolution at 30 fps and no manual adjustments or edits were made to the video.

When it comes to OS, I'll always be team iOS because Android is way too chaotic for me. But in terms of camera... there's really no competing with this kind of quality. I went to NCT's concert two weeks ago and came back with horrible videos, meanwhile all the Galaxy S22 fans were posting the best fancams on tiktok lol
Same here lol I went to NCT 127’s concert with my iPhone 11 thinking I was gonna get amazing videos but omg, I can barely see their faces 😭 and I wasn’t even that far away from them, so now I’m thinking on buying the S22 Ultra to go to the NCT Dreams concert in July. I’ll update if I did buy it and how it turned out hehe 🤭

This is the exact video I was looking for. I'm still pretty much camp iPhone, but I do see the advantages of Samsung. Definitely worth it since not all the concerts you go to will be up close (here we call it VIP). I wish I can afford both though, lol.

Just bought a used s21 ultra cause I go to a lot of KPOP concerts and always sit in the back towards the middle for recording purposes 😂, S24 ultra is on my list for next phone😅
Sorry I'm 4 months late but I'm going to watch a Kpop concert 1 seat behind the VIP so I think it's close enough, so should I go with my iphone 12 or better with Samsung S21?

I'm still looking for the best smartphone for concerts video recording. 1. Best and largest optical zoom 2. Best stabilizer with hand recording (when I'm pushed around by the crowd of fans) 3. Best light correction when some strong light effects happen on stage, so that nothing is over- or underexposed. I also am always in the VIP crowd, not far from stage but not close enougt to see all details of my idol. I need smartphone with same zoomed stablizer quality as iPhone has, and best zoom quality as Samsung has. Any recommendation?
If you tap (or preferably, tap and hold) on the screen on the Galaxy phones while the camera's on, you'll not only put the focus on that spot but you'll see a little slider appear with a sun icon--if you slide that sun icon to the left, the overall image will become darker and less washed out, slide it to the right, it'll make the image brighter but also probably more noisy/hazy. I'm curious how the video would look if you did this and lowered the exposure during really red scenes.
By the way, the difference between a single tap vs a tap and hold is that the former will cause that exposure and focus lock to stay for only like 3-5 seconds, and then the camera goes back to auto exposure and focus mode. However, if you tap and hold, and then adjust the exposure, the camera will stay at the exposure level until you change that value. Just play around with it, you'll get the hang of it. Also, just tapping (or tapping and holding) on any part of the image will make it so that the phone tries to make the target you tapped exposed correctly.

Of course! Adjusting exposure can help in almost every tough lighting situation. For this video I wanted to see how both phones did without me adjusting any video settings.
You missed a huge opportunity here. I was hoping for a sound comparison because that is really where the biggest difference lies. iPhones have a fantastic way of adjusting the input volume in a way that the recorded audio doesn‘t constantly clip. Digital audio clipping is the worst thing that can possibly happen to your recordings and in the past Samsung was horrible in this regard, but I‘d love to know if they actually caught up. Maybe you can do such an audio comparison at some point?

I had Iphone but I also bought samsung s ultra 22 coz the zoom is really great. I can see the expression of my fave artists during concerts even when I am in upper box sec. Haha.
I am going to a babymetal / sabaton concert next month and I'll try the iphone 14 pro max with 4K / Action Mode to see how much it helps with screenshake and quality

Galaxy 21 wins: that red tint can be toned down in editing software, in the iPhone its almost impossible to raise the saturation. Theres no colors. More points for galaxy.. Thanks!
Um incorrect just use BeastCam lol you can control it just like a regular canon I have a 3000$ canon mirrorless and it is manually controllable just like any mirrorless

In this video, the zoomed clips of Samsung are better than the of iPhone BUT - when I watch exactly, is zoomed video of iPhone much better stabilized than of Samsung - on Samsung I see always mini movements, but iPhone has really stabilized smooth zoomed clips. Should I wait for iPhone 15 Pro max? Or Samsung Galaxy 23 Ultra? I'm also always in VIP crowd ... not that far from stage (depends what number I get, or how big VIP area is) but its still too far to see face expressions of my idol. I wish smartphone with iPhone stabilized zoomed quality, but with much wider optical zoom then current iPhone 14Pro has. I'm confused - any recommendations?

I would say that the Samsung can take better concert video all around. Mind you, this video compared a nearly three-year-old Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. The Galaxy S24 should be arriving early next year.
iPhone is strong in video now with its new zoom camera, but Samsung's already been doing it for much longer.
Honestly, I'd say wait for the Galaxy S24 Ultra camera reviews and go from there.
but how abt if you’re standing close to them? I always go on the standing / vip section i wonder if we’ll see a difference. omg i bought an ip14 pro max for a concert and somehow i wanna feel good abt the camera

thanks for this! im buying an s22 ultra for concerts cuz i usually get nosebleed seats and i think it'll be a better investment to have bad seats and a good zoom. sad that samsung's 1x camera isn't as good as iphones but i'm never really close enough to use the 1x camera lol. the red tint seemed intense but i actually prefer it to the amber glow of the iphone cause i feel like that captured the actual color better.
yup the color saturation in the s21 ultra is kinda over exposed but if you look at it closely you will see details on the clothes of the audience even though the colors are over exposed. Samsung is doing good to its camera zooming features for a 2 yrs old phone competing to a newer phone. S23 Ultra Now has more improvements but S21 Ultra is still a good and cheaper phone having all the flagship features of S23 Ultra without the bulit-in stylus.
i wish i have both s23 ultra and iphone 14 pro max but both phone they were to expensive. I'm going to stick with my S21 for a few more years. thank you for the great video comparison.

Yeah, S22 Ultra has the superior cameras over the Fold. The Fold isn't really a phone I'd take to a concert - the main focus is its versatility not its camera capability
