Jean Hiraga developed 1979 the loudspeaker called "Le Petit"
and fascinated with it many people. It is an masterpiece
of technic that is based on the principle of "less is more"
The German channel "Snake Oil Audio" described it so vivid,
that I could not resist to build it! Follw me on this adventure!

Superb introduction and breakdown of the LePetit build! 👍 👏
Although easy to build, and costs next to nothing compared to a high end loudspeaker in the stores, yet it's a high level loudspeaker that can and will reveal how the rest of your systems sounds. And best of all, it's designed to play music, not just sound. Cheers, János

Thanks for the link to your channel! Absolutely fantastic 1st vid, and your description of your LePetites is excellent! Your building of them came out amazingly! Bravo! 👏👏👏 I’ve got my own different speaker build using old 50’s alnico drivers and compression horn tweeters in mind and already somewhat in process, which I’ve been drawing up, running through some simple programs, etc., but I honestly think I may try my hand at building a pair of LePetites first. I’m totally inspired and especially impressed with the level of performance from such an inexpensive and seemingly easy build. 🔊😊🎶⭐️

I don't think it's MDF they wouldn't have had MDF back then, more like chipboard in America they call it particle bored. possibly could be made from hardboard but, usually only comes in thin sizes tho! if it's chipboard I would use floor laying chipboard it's finer.
I noticed it sounds very woody the sound specially in vocals.
best material is valchromat a Portuguese type of MDF but safer to use and better acoustically.

Oh, You are completely right, it is possible there was no MDF in 1979! I guess it is chipboard or particle board then!
But as I know Jean Hiraga, he would have used some mostly deaf material in that time.
But I think, if You don´t want to make it close to the original, I would strongly recommend Multiplex. MDF works great though, as it proofed later on! (Just imagine the ratio of the 4" driver to the 2" thick lower front baffle, it is mad, but great)

Thank you for a great video and your madness
PS I have never got my head around the idea that one (smallish) driver can create a full range of frequencies. It just should not work

You will be amazed! This build changed my complete thinking about Audio, I always walked into the wrong direction...
The most amazing part of the 4" Petit is, how clear You can hear differencies of equipment / amplifiers, when 2-3 way speakers fail to do so...

@@iam_mad Thanks Jurgen. I have made a few speakers. In full range... The Metronome, A set of Arpeggios and a Bigger is Better. My current favourite is a set of GR Research X-statics that are half open baffle. Don't tell anyone, but I am a bit mad too so I will do some Petites very soon. (I am wading through Janesh's rather long videos too, to get a clearer picture

Hi, I built these in the early 80's and used them, happily, for some years..
Got nostalgic after watching Your videos, orderd new FE103NV2's immediately..
They arrived today and what a disappointment..
The new drivers are such a freeking disappointment (Not Your fault off course..)
Magnet is half size compered to old FE103 sigmas..
They weight a good 250 gr less than originals..
Diaphragm is 5 mm smaller in diameter..
    Made in China..
No wonder You reported lack of base..
But as I said, not Your fault.. I blame Fostex..
Good video on Your behaf btw
Will buld them and se if I get more nostalgic or disappointed.

Hoi Ikka, please do not be frustrated, the NV2 are not the Sigma Drivers from back then.
But if You are in a small 3x3 or 4x4 meter room, even with the FE130 NV2 You have a nice Bass, believe me, the sound is very harmonious.
I give You now a substancial info: if You want an equavilent to the old sigma drivers, return the FE103NVs and order the FE126NV2, You can build the Petit as it is, and just slap the 126´ in, You will have the full Mojo 😉
Bass Reflex port is fine as it is, and if You use Multiplex birch or beach, the Petit sounds even better!
Don´t forget the burn-in time, minimum 2 weeks!
      Cheers!😊

Do you have a frequency response of this speaker?

    • @iam_mad
      @iam_mad  ปีที่แล้ว

Check out SnakeOil´s DIY site, there is a German translation of the original article from L'Audiophile,
with the frequency tables and explanations... Maybe use translate-google for Your understanding, the original was in French 😉

@@iam_mad there is no frequency response of the loudspeaker. They are saying it goes up to 18000 Hz. But where did it start at the bottom? I think around 70 or 80 Hz. Sorry but this is to high.
Check out the Markaudio-chn-110. This is really fullrange (35 Hz till 18000 Hz), nearly same price.

But for the Petit, the efficiency of the MA is way lower then Fostex...
