Most great sounding old capacitors used in good sounding vintage tube amplifiers were indeed aluminum oil.... I use them also and found an american company manufactoring those with good sound quality ....Arizona capacitors .........( three types , paper/oil .........paper/foil + and paper+/foil....) Coherence and harmony are key .........often forgotten by high end stuff........

For what tube type this preamp is optimized and has the correct operation points ? ....multiple different tube types will result in misleading results when not used with their adequate operation conditions......only one tube type will be optimized and with some esoteric high quality amps the brand of the tube with the same type will be important also. A Marantz 7 was build with ECC83 TFK............with all other brands it will not sound as a Marantz 7.....Some CJ preamps were voiced with a ECC82 RFT ........the tube was relabeld Conrad Joghnson...nobody would have thought to choos a RFT tube in a CJ..........BUT that tube did the job they wanted it to sound. ( Luxman did the same with the famous SQ360 ) And so on ...........sticking with the same tube type and doing tube rolling one can indeed optimze the sound to your own prefered likings. That's one of the glorious things wit tube amplifiers...

Very interesting personal experience ....... I listen and choose tubes to obtan the least sensation od " reproduced music"........the most coherent in a given amp and system....... Therefor my choice is quiteasy and simple........;the right tube and the whole system.......is when I can no longer analyze the performance ! When the msuic drags me into the music letting me totaly firget the system....my boidy will start to move with the music and I will forget to forget to analyze hifi.. I only use nos tubes no current production tubes. ( only in recent tube amplifiers the use of current production is justified ) Nos tubes go only in the very best amplifiers.....same for resitors and capacitors. But in the end it is only the result and s( personal ) atisfactionj that counts. Have a nice day and thank you for the experience and upload.

If it takes up to 400 hours, Fostex needs to be puting some hours on them before shipping them out.

I've been reading through some of the forums regarding this preamp and found that you can run 6SN7 and 12SN7 tubes on this with an adapter for the sockets. I'm curious to find out if you've tried either of these tubes? If so, what were your impressions?

Lieber IamMad, erstmal danke für Deine tollen und unterhaltsamen und sehr informativen Videos. Ich folge dir sehr gerne. Nach Deinen Berichten über die FM300a-Clone habe ich mir auch einen in China bestellt. Auch bei Wolf6911. Dort die Version mit zwei Netzteilen und dem geschirmten Gehäuse für knapp 600$ plus Versand. Da kam dann nach drei Wochen eine beeindruckend schwere und gut verarbeitete Endstufe und ich habe die gleich mal in meine Kette gehängt. Aufdruck ist: "BRZHIFI" Zum Vergleich von Endstufen habe ich einen Umschalter, um schnell von einer auf die andere Endstufe zu kommen und ich habe jetzt doch ein paar Fragen an die Community hier: Also ich habe nach jahrelangem Ausleihen, Probehören und Verkaufen hier bei mir in meiner Kette zwei Endstufen: Eine Pioneer M22 und eine M25. Also beide Baujahr ca. 1978, revisioniert und selbstverständlich 100Volt Japanmodelle (die Japaner haben ja für den Heimmarkt doch in sehr engen Toleranzen gearbeitet im Vergleich zum Export). Und ich muss sagen: Die putzen diesen Chinaklon einfach mal weg. In jeder Disziplin. Also von Auflösung, Dynamik, Differenziertheit, präziser Räumlichkeit, Antritt beim Bass etc. Also das ist so krass, dass ich mir jetzt zwei Fragen stelle: Entweder sind diese Chinaklone wirklich sehr grossen Schwankungen in der Produktion unterworfen oder viele Kommentare hier im Stil von "der Chinaklon putzt meine Accuphase weg" sind Fake? Oder meine Pioneers sind einfach nach wie vor Glanzstücke? Sind ja Transistoren und keine Röhren. Wobei ich sagen muss, dass ich die Pioneers bei einem Freund gegen seine Audionote (Preis angeblich um die 30.000 Euro) spielen hab lassen, was meinen Freund in Depressionen gestürzt hat. Ich halte die Pioneers zwar für gute Endstufen aber mir ist durchaus klar, dass da noch viel Luft nach oben ist. Aber wie auch immer. Wer hat denn so um die Zeit Frühjahr bis jetzt mal einen Chinaklon der FM300a bestellt und kann mir eine Einschätzung geben?

When you receive the MP dac/stream, would be great to please hear your feedback when 1). it is connected directly to your FM300A and 2). when it is connected to your MP tube pre-amp and then to your FM300A. As I only use 1 input, the pre-amp is not mandatory but will add it if it makes the system sound better. Wonder if the MP dac/streamer tubes + the MP pre-amp tubes may make the whole system too tubey? Thanks

I really enjoyed your video about this preamplifier. A couple of questions, do you think this would sound good between a couple of nuforce reference 9 V2 se monoblock amps, pmc fb1i speakers and a chord 2qute dac? There is a new mk3 version of this amp would you get that over the mk2?

Got this amp very recently. Just wonder how the bias adjustment can be done when required. Don't see any screw adjustable points on it like those found on the Willsenton R8 which I bought two years ago.

Hi very good video indeed and thank you for it Interesting point at 23:14 I think that this could depend on a different damping factor Imho it is very important that the amp has a high damping factor It can be checked with a response to impulse test or a square wave response at low Hz This is why tube amps are bad with fast disco music They cant control the woofers Do you have a schematic for the FM Acoustic maybe ? it would be interesting to analyze it

I only believe in 6.5 inch speaker, but never a pass 7inch one, or the 4 inch. They(the size i mention) sure can manage/produce frquency spectrum better especially low frequency power. I love sound demo, thats only a viewer(online viewer like me) can know what a sound actually would approximate be like. Please use more famous songs, as thats what most people listen to. Btw u do have great ears, that tiny 'single 4inch' do sound SUPER 😮😮😮. Hard for me to believe the speaker. Anyway i do more prefer/believe the size i mention early. Thank so2 much for your experience sharings, its do give joy and help to highest audio quality seekers.

Unreal. The Behringer Heavy Metal, and the Heavy Distortion in combo with these is utterly amazing. The Heavy Distortion HD-300 can push much higher input into these pre amps and it gets nice and sloppy. I cant tell if the tube saturates due to the pedals distortion. But I had a blues sound going, just through a $50 set of cinema capable, secondhand, 2.1 PC speakers with a decent woofer, the Hi-fi has some grunt but is in mini form. With the distortion turned down to 9 o'clock the sound was melting like butter through these smallish speakers.

I got a NS-10p. After messing around the connectors, it can warm a guitar sound nicely. The factory tube smooth out the high ends and are a little bass heavy and has not got enough pre to drive a passive signal to anything useful.. With an eq to push the tone, it is has a very nice tone effect on a guitar line signal, attenuating the sizzle out of the top end from a brightly distorted signal, and added no noticeable extra noise floor to an MXR saturation pedal. I don't think the op amp will let me push the valves to crumble. But for a phantom mic like the B-2 that's too bright for vocals, this might be gold. I will get back to you. I loved your review and thanks for the bonus tips about the alternative tubes.

The red Wima caps can be upgraded.... Jantzen Silver Z Caps will increase detail etc...

You have added in one evening, a whole new way of thinking to my enjoyment of music. Bravo!! My listening 'habit' has changed from sitting in front of my system, to listening to music at my pc playing mp3/flac formats. Could I connect the naim to my pc, or personal music player like a cayin, and can you suggest a bookshelf version of le petit. Or is my viewpoint sacrilege!?!

Great video. Do u also have experience with muzishare 300b. If so, is muzishare have much better sound quality than laochem 845 300b amplifier.
