Jean Hiraga developed 1979 the loudspeaker called "Le Petit" and fascinated with it many people. It is one of the most famous examples of the Single Driver breed in Europe.
Curiosity made me want to build it to the exact details from 1979...

Hello Jürgen, thank you very much for sharing all the build details. For someone like me that never built a loudspeaker, this has been incredibly helpful and fun. I think you have a talent for video editing! I apprecciate a lot the fact that you made samples available on Janos's channel and even Maya's reaction. Thanks also for taking the time to share your experience with the world in two languages (!). I have been drooling over this project since Thorsten mentioned it and Janos backed it up. Unfortunately it wont work for me as I have severe space restrictions, but maybe someday I will build this. Also apprecciate the nice tip about where to get the wood! Loved that website and they are not far from me. I wish you a lot of fun and more great music experiences in your audio journey, I will be following ;)

This speaker is by the way the "very best" for small living space, because the bass is filled up by the response of the room!
Hi Jürgen, sorry somehow I forgot to answer this. Apprecciate the tip but I have a problem with the height of the Le Petit. I dont have my small bookshelf speakers on stands, but in a kind of homemade creative solution to avoid having them completely inside bookshelves. So far from ideal, but right now it is either that or nothing haha. The sound is better than I initially expected I could achieve though. I like it. Maybe someday I can redo all the furniture and figure out a better solution, but for now better keep as it is to avoid problems with the wife hehe

I´m happy You like the MP-701! 😉It is confirmed that Multiplex is best for the Petit build, but if You want to go for the original thing, MDF was used...

A great presentation! As I've looked at Le Petites over the years, I have often wondered if it would be wise to put an angle on the top of the external, front baffle to reduce defraction/reflections. Any thoughts?

As I am making a complete Replika of Jean Hiraga´s Petit I wanted to stick to the original!
I don´t want to spoil too much, but of course You can alter many things like forming a slot instead of the tube, etc.
I will in the end put the driver flush with the baffle, but I get it, that the front hole has a role in the timing of the sound waves of the reflex with the driver itself. To start changing I feel is a bit too much of a hassle, I will do total new project later with FE-166..
Now I can spoil as much as that the imaging is fantastic and the quality of the sound is extremely analytical.
There are developers who use the Petit as "Monitor" for gear developing. 😉

János from Real World Audio made a very detailed Video of an "Petit" modern version, and he brought right today the 2nd Video of the different possible drivers, that would be usable!

looks like you're doing a nice job! but as I pointed out if you want to keep it as original use chipboard/particularbored.
has completely different resonance to MDF, be less smearing in the upper mid and higher frequencies, could be more booming in the bass tho! probably why he made it so thick.
be curious to see what the difference is as well between the two. if it was me i would make it out of the chipboard and apply some MDF 18mm - 80mm strips vertically to the sides only, and one down the back, of course compensating this in the design volume if done on the inside.
you're building a another one? not sure why you don't like the Mark audio drivers, in my opinion they are the better superior choice!!
I'm curious what do you like and don't like about the Le Petites speakers?? how would you describe them?

Did I say I dislike Mark Audio? I am sorry, but the German version of this video skyrocketed and I have so many comments, that I really loose the thread 😅
I think the Mark Audio must have serious qualities, since the "Sibelius" is very popular for musical speakers in the audiophile world. But there is a limit what one can build an do in a certain time...
I find the white/blueish Mark Audio driver appealing. (from its properties)
My next build (its at least planned, material is here) will be with ScanSpeak drivers, with a mix of birch plywood and massive beech, and then build with EF 166 Fostex (2 each side) 😀

Hello Jürgen, I have noticed that when I enter Hiraga's dimensions on Winisd (26.5ltr and 139mmx70mm for the port) the resulting tuning frequency is around 48Hz. However, Gerard Chretien's1984 article shows a peak port gain at 40Hz... Why do you think this is? Thank you for your videos!

I think the extensive dampening may influence the curve by virtually extending the volume, or they had some room response? 🤔
The article I have to look is so blurry it is hard to see the digits of the Hz...
But the Petit can play voluminous Bass with the FE-103 NV, as You can hear in the sound samples...
@@iam_mad Thank you for you reply Jürgen, the article does mention a port peak at 40Hz. I could translate the article if anyone is interested. I am planning to build a pseudo-Petit, slighty larger (28 litres) and with FF105WK (not the FF125WK, I have good reasons for this). I will report once I finish the build. 😀

I have in the German YT Channel some who built the Petit with FF105WK, works perfect! The FF series sounds a bit less bright than the FF series.
Pls dont skip the additional front baffle, the baffle tends to vibrate a lot.
@@iam_mad Absolutely! Thanks. Further to the point, Hiraga wrote another article where he speaks very eloquently about cabinet resonances and how sometimes, thick inhert walls can be more effective than bracing, since bracing can, if not implemented properly, create unwanted resonances. As an exmaple he mentions the trade offs of front to back bracing, case in which the baffle resonaces are transmitted to the back panel, therein defeating the purpose of bracing.
@@a.x.marcus4627 best is to go for multiplex wood, since the mdf is really easy to be resonant!
But the driver is no longer produced and sold..
FE103NV2 is available, no worries... 😉
Why not more videos in English? Nobody are able to understand German language!
