People in small villages of South Italy are mostly all the same. They must mind all people business! I know it personally, especially when I was with my ex. All asking about "Is she your mother?". All of them felt the urge to label the person who was with me. I said to myself (And I bet that's what you wonder too in these cases): "why do you need to ask, first of all?".
The weirdest thing in your case is that the clerk of the "questura" asked several times who Sadie was, even when P told him "She is my FRIEND". Unbelievable small and closed minds of Southern Italy folks. I'm so sorry! But keep going, ladies. Your love must be stronger.

I know that the persons asking didn't really believe so but rather they were just looking for confirmation of our relationship. Funny thing is that I never got asked if she was my daughter. For years and years before my uncle and his wife were married (there's 30+ years between them) since the two of them and my grandma and I (my grandma is his mother and so I am his niece) all travel all over the Caribbean together for various academic conferences and book fairs plus publication matters(we publish bilingual books), we started having to just say this is his wife or he is her husband in order to avoid as a family a lot of nonsense. People are often just curious and they aren't trying to be hurtful but putting a legality label on things often does the trick. Just keep it simple and yes I know they are a heterosexual couple but it has also worked with me when referring to my partner as my wife. Her and I are the same age so maybe thats why we both don't get questions. I think people in some places are more curious about a dark skinned woman from Surinam who's half Hindu half Muslim with a very light skinned indigenous Mexican and half Cuban thats also two different religions. Between us both we spoke about 7 languages and that stood out more.
