I just want to say thank you! I have hypermobilty, suffered from a concussion in 2020 and had cervical disc replacement in 2021. I was diagnosed with TMJ years ago and had a normal mouth guard. I recently spent thousands of dollars at a local TMJ specialist. I wear an orthodic splint but your channel has been a lifesaver. Thank you for all of your tips!! I have run many things you've shared with my Dr. and my physical therapist.
Thank you for a well explained vid. I recently had a tooth extraction and as a result I have had this problem, I had no idea what was happening to my jaw as my mouth opening is now very restricted and painful. I did a google search and came up with the word TRISMUS . I've now read about it on some sites but have just found you and your well done explanation which is excellent thanks. I am booked in to see my Doc early next week . cheers from NZ
This is super interesting! I've had major jaw instability and worsening TMJD for years. I finally started treatment last month! The plan is a 24/7 orthotic for 6 months, followed by braces and double jaw surgery. I've had the owen tripod splint for about 2 weeks now and I've gone from "unhinging" my jaw on accident all the time and being able to fit a whole fist in my mouth, to straining to be able to open my mouth two finger widths. One of my joints feels super painful when I open at all-- really hoping it's a muscular issue as you're describing here! I'm worried that years of abuse on my discs have potentially worn them down
I’ve had Trismus for 6-7 months now. I was feeling hopeless and I went to 2 massage therapists who focused on the TMD. Today I found another one and I’m finding myself open easier and able to prolong the stretch!! (Before I had to force it and it actually increased clicking 😞) but this one didn’t feel like a force as much! Hoping even though it’s 6 months later if it’s working it means it may not be permanent
Ive had trismus for almost 7 years. And my muscles never returned to a non spasm state. The good news is that i have adapted my life to ir. When it first happened I was told by my dentist i had TMD and was given a mouth guard to wear at night as one of the potential causes may have been teeth grinding during sleep. I also saw a chiropractor, did craniosacral therapy and even had botox injected into my jaw muscles. None of it seemed to work and i was not in a great place psychologically when it all started. IIt is my understanding that TMD is an umbrella term for a variety of conditions around the TMJ. Years later i now realise that trismus describes specifically what i have. I have managed to alleviate the discomfort through meditation and other activities. I recently purchased a device called therabite to stretch my jaw musles. Is there any chance i can get my jaw back to what it was if i am persistant with physiotherapy over a period of time or do you reckon at this point (as you described in the video) that my musles are now fibrotic?
Thank you doctor l am really benefit from your video l have searched about medical ptyrogoid muscle and its clinical signification due to my presentation so thank you doctor
Hi Dr. Mistry, I'm very grateful for your channel and appreciate that you share so much information with us. I'm not sure if you can answer this, but for my tmj treatment I had a tmj orthotic made and I get adjustments for the appliance once a week. These are the only things that the tmj specialist I go to suggested (not any physical therapy or manipulations that you've spoken about before). He says that this is all I need to get the disc back in the right position, I was wondering if in your opinion it is possible in some cases to not need additional things like the therapy or manipulation and it can go back just with appliance and adjustments? I don't have any pain associated with my tmj problems, my main thing is I haven't been able to open my mouth as wide as before. Even that I can technically do if I force it, but my jaw is resistant to open more than 1-2 fingers. Thanks so much for all that you do!!
I find I get Trismus after PT. I also get muscle spasms from my disc displacement…. Wondering even though they weren’t listed generally having muscle spasms as a symptom can be related to TMD for trismus
I have had my mouth stuck shut for almost 2 months now... I was told to use popsicle sticks to force mouth open... but now for a week after trying the sticks it's not helping... or changing anything. It's not painful at all it's just not happening... what do I do?
Good evening hi Dr I have been suffering from lockjaw for a while now I have done so many treatments around here from specialist but still am now in bad pain I have gone up to the highest level in our country but still no relief for me😢
I think i have disc displacement because i have a connective tissue disorder. My jaw actually locked open once. We do not have anyone in your specialty near me. What other type of specialty would you recommend I see?
Good afternoon i live in massachusetts i was diagnosticed with tmj i have like inflammation inmynjaw and pain in my ear 👂. You have any recomendation in massachusetts or ri o Connecticut Thanks
I recently had a craniotomy and the incision runs from the front my ear, through what appears to be my temporalis muscle area to top of my head. I was very limited in in opening my mouth after and now able to get 2 finger widths wide. I hope I can eventually improve to almost normal. My surgeon said it was not my surgery that caused it however I never had this issue before....ever. I needed a second craniotomy a month later and the anesthesiologist advised me I had Trismus and they had to go about applying anesthesia another way...Im doing exercises and hopefully this helps, exercises can be painful for me though, day by day.
@theTMJdoc thanks for asking, I have not. I really haven't been given much direction about it. Only that the anesthesiologist said it was trismus, so I've been searching YT for exercises to help with it. Would you recommend I reach out to another Dr? I have a PT appointment next week. I've been doing stretches for the last month trying to help it along and it seems to have helped a little bit but not the 3 finger standard I hear about so often.

I believe it’s possible. The body has an enormous capacity to heal, given the correct help and guidance.
Is it cancer? Or does it lead to cancer?
No and no :)

what are the exercises for Trismus, do you have a video for this please?
I don't have a video for this. They are passive jaw exercises. I will try to make a video soon.

Locking open is different from disc displacement. I'd recommend you see a skilled and experienced TMJ dentist.

Hey dr mistry my jaw locks and unlocks. But when i sleep and wake up it unlocks what could it be ?
It's likely the disc of cartilage coming in and out of alignment.
