Hi Priya, I have suffered with TMD for many years. You are the first professional I have come across that has put it all together, I cried with relief after watching you video. Thankyou again.
I have had pain for YEARS. I have constant nearly unbearable pain on the right side of my head, neck, eye, and sinus area. I have had two sinus surgeries, eye procedures and drops/medications, headache specialists and medications, steroid injections, ER visits for intense head and eye pain, time away from work, and different specialists of all sorts. I have been doing this and a few other massages of yours (the temporalis video helped a TON!) and a couple others from doctors I found here. It's not completely gone yet but I have less pain than I have had in forever! If this will help long term - it will truly be a life changing discovery - THANK YOU!!!!

Hi Doctor Mistry, I just want to thank you so much for this video! I'm a college student and we were on finals last week. I suffer from anxiety, and these week was really tough for me. I was stressing a lot, clenching my teeth even while awake. My masseter muscle was very sore and the pain was very distracting. Over the weekend I just did outside massage, and it kind of worked, but didn't feel that release. But I found this video and did the inside massage, and God, I was finally able to feel the release. HI Priya, I tried that one too. It does feel more relaxed in the back there. I will definitely be doing this when I feel stressed out and tight up in there. Thanks.
this is an old video but you are so incredible, and you helped me understand why botox for my tmj issues wouldn’t be very sustainable at 22 and wouldn’t solve it forever. i really think doing these exercises a few times a day can get me in a much better spot, as this first time was already so helpful. thank you so much!
Wow. I was looking for ways to reduce the appearance of my masseter, which has become more prominent as I've gotten older, but the sensation of release is amazing! It has relaxed my jaw as well as exposing a lot of referred pain in other parts of my head and in my neck. A bizarre experience.

Wow I’m definitely usually a forever clencher I’m trying very hard lately to train myself you relax my jaw. There’s so much tension in my mouth that I’m constantly suctioning my tongue against the roof of my mouth, which started when I got my retainers and never went away. I know I will have to keep doing it but now I know what to do
I've been chewing alot of xylitol gum because it's been great for my oral health (my teeth also seem to be straightening ever so slightly), and I finally managed to stop biting my own mouth while doing so, but recently started developing jaw soreness around the TM joint so I will have to try this out.
Thanks for a great video. These techniques of going inside the mouth are pretty cool. Ive done massaging on the outside but being able to pinch the muscle is good.
any recommendations on what next steps there are if pain & tension don't subside after physical therapy, mouthguard, etc? the masseter release, especially when performed by the physical therapist, was so painful but brought so much relief afterwards. i have been trying my best to self manage, and a specialist here in my town showed me some passive stretches, the "N Position," etc, and prescribed a muscle relaxant for night time / naproxen for day time. I am not noticing much change & I have been trying to do the stretches regularly. hoping there is some sort of procedure or something that can be done to reset the masseter? thanks so much for your channel & for posting this video. extremely helpful!

@@SaltPyramids I figured you were which is why I went on and replied! Mine was so awful the past couple of days I could barely open my mouth without that nerve over my ear feeling tight. Temporarily a hot water pad (I’m not sure what they’re called, you put water in them and can freeze them or just use super hot water for heat) for 20 minutes helped loosen it up about 12 hours ago and it’s still loose, but for long term maintenance I am going to ask about the Botox. I hope you find relief!
The second stretch looks very similar to Beckman Oral Motor Protocol. It can be really helpful for people with TMJ. There are licensed therapists who can provide oral motor therapy.
Great video explaining the SCM exercises. I have had extreme pain in my SCM for about 1 1/2 years now. Its getting better very slowly, but still very painful and tight feeling on both sides. The right side is worst than my left side. I was wondering if doctors do cortisone injections into the SCM to reduce the inflammation, pain and tightness? I need some kind of relieve soon. Plus, I take Tylenol and Advil all the time to deal with the pain and inflammation. Thank you!
Thank you for this video as well as your response to my comment from another video. When I perform the first release, I feel a painful lump inside my right cheek. I feel the lump in the same location as well, between my thumb and index finger, when I perform the second release. The lump is hard but can be moved around. Is this lump a muscle knot? My hunch is it's contributing to my TMD and facial misalignment. Edit: the lump I'm feeling is a vertical lump, if that makes sense. Thank you in advance!

Going to try doing these massages/releases. My dentist recommended I do Botox to relax the muscle there so I don’t clench and that over time I should grind less and less. My old orthodontist said not to do that. So now I’m not sure what to do 😩. I’m having so much tension there and feel myself grind when I wake (thankfully my retainers are there to protect my teeth). But that tension is horrible.
hey love you’re vids❤️ i have bruxism and becauce of that my masseter mucules become so large and it makes my face square and big. do you recomend something? pls reply🥺❤️
I wish there was. Botox should help atrophy those muscles if done every 3 months for about a year. But this is expensive and Botox is a neurotoxin. Botox in the masseters can also potentiate sleep apnea.
Is it better to use heat or ice or both to try and calm down these muscles? Also I have been looking through your playlist is they anything to help with ear issues like directly at the bottom of the ear?
I woke up one morning with the right side of my jaw in pain and partially locked. I cant fully open my mouth! My wisdom teeth just barely poked thru at the exact same time.. im convinced that it may be due to the wisdom tooth and im seeing a dentist, but im also now thinking it could finally be having problems due to grinding my teeth since i was a child! I hope the dentist will help me solve this mystery 😬
My tmj has gotten so bad lately that I can hardly eat without increasing the pain, making it almost impossible to eat most foods. And I must of put too much pressure on one side a few days ago because I just light pressure on my cheek hurts but massaging it was the only thing that gave me the slightest release
Sorry to hear this! Try the muscle releases in my TH-cam playlist “tmj exercises/muscle releases “. Many people have contacted me saying that these helped!
Hi Pryia😃 Thank you so much for all the informative videos, it is really helpful😃😃 i was just wondering; what are your thoughts on Botox-treatment for jaw clenching? Does it help, and is there any improvement on tinnitus , if present as TMJD symptom?
I’ll be releasing a video about Botox and TMJD in a few weeks. I think it’s a temporary bandaid that can be helpful in the short term. Tinnitus is the one symptom that, in my experience, does not respond predictably to any treatment.
@@theTMJdoc you’re right about Botox being a temporary bandaid. I was in a Botox for migraines study at USC Medical Center some years ago. The injections would help for a couple days but the migraines kept coming back. I only figured out after discovering your channel yesterday that my problem is TMJ. Specifically I think the lateral pterygoid and masseter are angry. I have had a terrible shooting pain around my lower left wisdom tooth area since 2017. (The wisdom tooth was extracted back in 1999.) I had it checked by a dentist in 2019 but he couldn’t find anything. The left side of my face is slightly smaller than my right. After binge-watching your videos yesterday, I have been doing the various exercises and can already feel a difference. Thank you so much!
Hi Dr. Mistry! I’m a dentist too in Boston. Nice job on Dr. Lin’s interview! I’m curious about all the interest in sleep medicine in last year in dentistry. Is it warranted? I’m sure we will find more connections between dental and medical fields, hopefully have more common ground. You mentioned that in children an expansion of the upper arch can help bring the lower jaw to a more ideal position, and hopefully stabilize the airway and TMJ. Does that also help the phenotype to express itself fully in terms of growing the lower jaw to a more proportional and ideal bone structure? Can this be used in adults as well with removable palatal expanders without TMJ dysfunction? Lately, there is more focus on improving jaw growth to help the airway especially in children so that in adulthood they can thrive, especially avoiding soft diet, nursing, correcting tongue tie... Thank you!
Hi there Dr. Keon! Yes I believe the interest in sleep medicine is definitely warranted as there is a string connection between sleep apnea and TMJ disorders. Expansion can definitely help children reach their full genetic potential in terms of orofacial growth :). As for adults, expansion can be achieved too, but often not as easily or as quickly as with children and I haven’t seen it cause TMJ dysfunction.
Priya Madam, Good presentation. In some videos I have seen fingers/knuckles running from bottom to top out side the mouth as masseter myofascial release. Which is correct..? Can be done both methods.? Doing both methods have different type of reasons .?
I had a tooth extraction recently and have had slight jaw pain and sharp aches that just hit out of nowhere on my scalp forehead temples and eyes this helped a little but I think I have an infection because my ocupital lymph node is swolle to the size if 2 thumbs and tender
@@theTMJdoc yes and no I I seen a dentist and my extraction has no infection but still need to see my doctor for the other problems the pain is starting to scare me and the lypmh node is still tender and swollen
Hi dr Priya. Ive seen lots of self-release vids for the masseter and one thing I noticed was the consistent reminder to do it ONLY when needed or not more than once a day. Is there a special reason for it?
Hi Dr. Mistry! I just did these massages and they were sore on the side I do most of my clenching. I was gentle and slow, and did them until I felt relief. You’re so right, it helps immediately! When I first did the knuckle massage, I felt kind of a lump (almost like a knot) that slowly worked out as I continued. Is this normal? How frequently should/can I do this? Thanks so much for the quick tutorial. Your expertise is very appreciated!
Thanks doc for this informative vid. Can one over "massage" the masseter muscles? I tried massaging the exterior of the masseter muscles and felt a distinctive big bump on one side of the face, which I put down as muscle knot and proceeded to give it more "intense" massage and pressure in a bid to "break up the knot" (if this makes sense to you). The next day I woke up with the affected side visibly swollen and puffy, and the masseter muscle more prominent than before.
I have TMJ on the left side which is permanent and does not ease off no matter what massages or jaw movements I do. I find myself always moving my jaw to the right to crack or click for some sort of relief. No matter what I do or how much I relax it just never goes away. It’s been like this for years, it drives me crazy 😭
I noticed that I can't relax my mouth without my my mouth opening. I constantly clench my jaw to keep my mouth close subconsciously. Any thoughts on what's causing this potentially? I do know I have a slight crossbite.

I started doing TRE (tension trauma release exercises by David Berceli) 2 months ago for 10-15 mins daily and it seems to have stopped me grinding my teeth at night. I have had no TMJ/teeth pain for past 2 months. I had jaw surgery 25 years ago and I wear a hard night guard - but I was not able to stop the bruxism (which has resulted in 3 cracked teeth) until I discovered TRE. Highly recommend anyone suffering this to try it
@@theTMJdoc thanks, I was using the masseter release exercises which are good .... but by preventing the bruxism the face muscles are not tense like before
Hi so I don’t know if this comment is late but I have a pretty wide face, I’m not sure if it’s face fat or not. From far my face looks like it’s square but I don’t think it really is. I think that massete muscles are large, since I do clench on them and grew up chewing gum. Does this exercise help thin them? If not, what can I do? And before you say Botox I can’t get them because I am a minor.
Dr. Priya Mistry, Is it possible for your masseter to cause ear problems? I’ve noticed that when my jaw hurts and is swollen, I get fluid pooling in my middle ear, with tinnitus due to the fluid and my eustachian tube is not functioning. It almost feels like the swelling in my jaw is causing the swelling or obstruction of my eustachian tube. it lasts for a few days, then goes away until I overload my jaw with eating chips or something that causes it to strain.

After doing these little stretches I feel for the first time in a very long time that I am not being drawn to immediately clenching my teeth. I know I will have to keep doing it but now I know what to do
I’m glad these helped!
I've been chewing alot of xylitol gum because it's been great for my oral health (my teeth also seem to be straightening ever so slightly), and I finally managed to stop biting my own mouth while doing so, but recently started developing jaw soreness around the TM joint so I will have to try this out.
I wouldn’t recommend chewing a lot of gum. It’s tough on the jaw joints and the jaw muscles.
Omg I did this because I felt the pain in these muscles and now even my bad headache is gone
I’m so glad to hear this! Subscribe and share if you find it helpful! :)
Thanks for a great video. These techniques of going inside the mouth are pretty cool. Ive done massaging on the outside but being able to pinch the muscle is good.

Hi Dr. Priya, Can you please make a video on treatments on masseter hypertrophy and jaw line? It will helps a lot for us. Thanks in advance.
I don’t want to make a video about this because I don’t have a solution for it 😊
Thank you! This was very needed. I think I have knots in my cheek muscles we massaged. They are really tight to run my fingers over

any recommendations on what next steps there are if pain & tension don't subside after physical therapy, mouthguard, etc? the masseter release, especially when performed by the physical therapist, was so painful but brought so much relief afterwards. i have been trying my best to self manage, and a specialist here in my town showed me some passive stretches, the "N Position," etc, and prescribed a muscle relaxant for night time / naproxen for day time. I am not noticing much change & I have been trying to do the stretches regularly. hoping there is some sort of procedure or something that can be done to reset the masseter? thanks so much for your channel & for posting this video. extremely helpful!

Thank you!
I haven’t heard of cortisone specifically in the SCMs. Sorry!

It may be a muscle knot but it would be wise to get an MRI to further evaluate a painful lump because it may be something more than a muscle knot.
I'm also feeling a little spot (don't really know if it's a lump) where I feel a bit of pain when I try to release the masseter.
Thank u. This really helped.

Risk-Guy here again. What are the chances of damaging the parotid gland by doing these exercises? Is it normal to drool more during them? 1m30s is enough for this exercise? How many times/day or week?

There’s no chance of damaging the parotid gland as far as I know. Yes a few minutes 3-4 x per day is fine! :)
Sorry to hear that! Is there a TMJ dentist in your area you can consult with?
hey love you’re vids❤️ i have bruxism and becauce of that my masseter mucules become so large and it makes my face square and big. do you recomend something? pls reply🥺❤️
I wish there was. Botox should help atrophy those muscles if done every 3 months for about a year. But this is expensive and Botox is a neurotoxin. Botox in the masseters can also potentiate sleep apnea.
Thank you. I've been told TMJ with masseter muscle pain but does the pain go into the cheekbone and on the skull above the ear?
Yes it can do when the temporalis muscle is also tight I think
Is it better to use heat or ice or both to try and calm down these muscles?
Also I have been looking through your playlist is they anything to help with ear issues like directly at the bottom of the ear?
There’s nothing besides a TMJ orthotic that I’m aware of to help ear issues. Sorry!
You've been my angel and set my jaw free 😂

I woke up one morning with the right side of my jaw in pain and partially locked. I cant fully open my mouth! My wisdom teeth just barely poked thru at the exact same time.. im convinced that it may be due to the wisdom tooth and im seeing a dentist, but im also now thinking it could finally be having problems due to grinding my teeth since i was a child! I hope the dentist will help me solve this mystery 😬
Best of luck to you and sorry you’re going through this!
Hi priya hope all is well. Was going to ask is it normal to feel muscle knots in this area when doing the outside exercise? Thanks
It is common in people who suffer from tmjd.

My tmj has gotten so bad lately that I can hardly eat without increasing the pain, making it almost impossible to eat most foods.
Hi Dr.

Hi Dr.
I’m so glad to hear this! You can do all of these 3-4 times a day except the lateral pterygoid. Limit that to 1-2 times a day.
No, I don't think you can over massage it.

I don't have a good solution for thinning the masseters out besides Botox. This muscle release likely won't help with that. Sorry!
Yes masseter dysfunction can cause what feels like ear issues.
