  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome is pain in the jaw joint that can be caused by a variety of medical problems. The TMJ connects the lower jaw (mandible) to the skull (temporal bone) in front of the ear. Certain facial muscles that control chewing are also attached to the lower jaw. Problems in this area can cause head and neck pain, tinnitus, vertigo, facial pain, ear pain, headaches, a jaw that is locked in position or difficult to open, problems with biting, and jaw clicking or popping sounds when you bite.

I'm crying. When I was 15, my dad punched me in the face from the left. I am now 47. I have seen so many doctors as an adult and tried so much. Coping with the echoing pain has damaged my whole life. In four short minutes, your technique has..... Well, it's hard to explain. My head feels quiet like when it is snowy. My eyes are sharp and light is making them water. I have no clicking. I have INSTANTLY "lost" this pea sized swelling I had in the furrow between my jaw and earlobe area. It may return; we will see. But this moment of unimaginable relief from unrelenting decades of varying dull and sharp ache is so very welcome. I am amazed! I appreciate the careful way you demonstrate techniques to help my own self. Today, I have hope.

I have tmd and for this first time my jaw completely locked 5 days ago and I have been massaging it, putting heat, doing exercises. I’ve been having such anxiety over it and while waiting to hear back from a specialist I decided to come on TH-cam and found your video. I am completely shocked that my jaw is now open! My doctor told me it was all in my head. I felt like asking "Where is your jaw located?" His knowledge of anatomy was obviously abysmal and his attitude was even worse. When I asked him repeatedly to test me for thyroid dysfunction he wrote me down as hypochondriac!! I got private tests done independently and they came back that I was severely hypothyroid. When I sent the blood test results to him he wrote me off as his patient stating that there was a breakdown in our therapeutic relationship. In the middle of covid when no doctors in Ireland were taking on new patients. As another doc said "He literally threw you aside like an empty coke can".

Your explanation of the immobilized side versus painful side was extremely helpful. I’ve been focusing my pain management on my painful side without remembering to consider the connection between the joints. Even many doctor’s I’ve seen have focused solely on treating the painful side. It wasn’t until I saw a massage therapist that I felt how tight my left side was (not my painful side but getting that massaged nearly had me in tears). Now I understand why, and now I can better self-treat alongside specialist treatment.

Thank you for making this video. Oh my gosh! What a relief. My right TMJ joint is always in pain and can see the joint is dislocated from the alignment of my front teeth (and I know my right TMJ is dislocated from an MRI). I was always trying to push it back but not knowing how. Your tip towards the end of the video about resisting on the opposite side helped to realign (I heard some crunching sounds). For the last week I’ve been taking pain medications on the daily and feeling frustrated it wasn’t realigned. Thank you so much! This has helped me so much and I’ve now subscribed. Have a lovely day Dr Mandela. From Cynthia in Australia.

OMG this is incredible!!! Not only I can open my jaw straight suddenly, which I couldn’t for about 10 years, it also released emotional pain. To understand which side is actually the blocked one makes a huge difference for me! I’ve been focusing on the painful side all those years instead of the blocked one, because I didn’t know!
10 years ago my jaw was blocked from one moment to the other and I could only open it 1-2 centimeters for almost 3 months. Doctors wanted me to do surgery. I refused, because I am singer and I didn’t want anyone to mess with that. Since then things got better with massages and body work, but it still tilts to one side and I never got rid of the pain, also I grind teeth.
The last exercise is a bit painful and I hear lots of cracking sounds while doing it, but it really works for me. Only my teeth don’t fit onto each other so good. They never really did perfectly, but now there is a gap between upper and lower back teeth on one side.
Is that a normal side effect? Or just temporarily?
Update: I keep doing the exercises and it gets better and better! This is life changing. I am soooooo happy that I found your channel 🙏💜

Alright, where do I send my co-pay?
I watched a couple of videos on people getting sedated and having doctors pop jaws back into place as my stomach sank. I just massaged my lower jaw muscles as Dr. Mandell instructed and in about 20 seconds I felt a series of slight pops. I couldn't clench my teeth together before (lower jaw dislocated forward) but now after a couple of minutes of massaging, it's nearly totally back to normal. [Note: This is not a chronic injury--caused by a sharp blow directly to the jaw, pushing it backward]
Dr. M, I went to your website to see if you sold products or something--nothing. Since you enjoy helping those in need, perhaps you can list some of your favorite organizations on the site so that those who find value in your videos can donate in your name. Thank you for taking all of the time and effort to help educate the public and reduce loads of pain from hundreds of thousands across the globe.
