I’m no transmission expert but let me give some insight. Mine was shifting late in my truck and it ripped up until I produced a lot of pressure before it kicked into The next gear when driving in first second and third. I change the filter and also the fluid and that fix the problem. It could be poor transmission fluid pressure or voltage drop. More than likely I’d say pressure is the issue and can be caused by everything dealing from dirty fluid, pickup filter, etc. it’s hard to pinpoint an issue with minor details which feel is a big one and noise. I’d google “transmission late shifting on front wheel drive” don’t be too specific so you can get a lot of feedback. The information that’s repetitive I’d start with first also the cheapest fixes. Good luck 🍀
I have a 2000 VR6 Gti, and its a manual transmission. It turns off on me at random times. and the Abs light comes on along with the ASR light. and the car wont start for at least 15 when that happens.
I’m not a mechanic, I just try and figure out the issues I have through forums and checking everything obvious before digging deeper. If I had to guess it would be something that is overheating and needs time to cool off hence your 15min wait or a form of limp mode for manual transmission. Also 15mins could allow the brain to reset after the power is killed. Try unplugging the battery for an hour to see if it resets the entire car this was a quick fix for me when the car went into limp mode and it would fix my issue for a few weeks at at time. Turns out my abs sensors were bad causing it and it wouldn’t recognize the brakes and was trying to prevent a potential accident hence limp mode on an automatic. Yours might not have limp mode hence killing it. But also check for burnt / melted wires around the motor and transmission along with the fuse blocks
Hope you’ll still see this after years hahah, but when you say “take out the fuses and let it sit for an hour, is the car running for an hour or do you just let it sit not running? Also do you pull the fuses while the cars off or on?
Pull the fuses with the car off and don’t start it. You can also pull the battery wire to reset everything. The fuse box on the battery terminal was melting hence limp mode
No I’m not an expert. All I do is try and help when I can for the issues that I encounter on my vehicles. The VR6 I hated with a passion and won’t probably ever own a VW because of it.
My Vr6 auto is shifting slow....do you think its the gearbox oil ?

Check to make sure the fuse box hasn’t melted. Sometimes you’ll lose connection where the fuses link up under the hood if they are.
