Overview
The 2022 Land Rover Defender might look reminiscent of the 1950s original, but in reality it is a completely modern, high-tech off-roader with unique curb appeal. A trio of engines is offered-a turbocharged four-cylinder, a turbo-and-supercharged six-cylinder, and a supercharged V-8-and all come standard with four-wheel drive. The Defender can be had in two-door 90 and four-door 110 body styles, and advanced-duty off-roading equipment is available on all models, including an adjustable air suspension and locking differentials. There aren't many SUVs that are as capable as the Defender, and they mostly come from Land Rover's lineup. Some may consider the Jeep Wrangler a cheaper alternative, but the Defender has it beat when it comes to on-road refinement and available luxury appointments.
What's New for 2022?
Land Rover is introducing a V-8 engine into the Defender lineup for 2022: the 518-hp Supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 that's found in the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models. The V-8 will be available on both the two-door 90 and four-door 110 models; a high-end Carpathian Edition model will also sport the V-8 engine. The package enhances the Defender with Carpathian Gray exterior paint with a black-painted roof and tailgate, black-painted tow hooks, Xenon Blue brake calipers, and special Carpathian Edition badging. A new XS trim is available on 110 models and bundles a host of luxury and convenience features together including heated-and-cooled front seats, leather-and-cloth upholstery, three-zone automatic climate control, an adjustable air suspension, and adaptive cruise control. Land Rover is also introducing a new, optional 11.4-inch infotainment display this year and will offer even more accessory exterior packages for customization. An even larger, three-row Defender 130 model is on the horizon, but we aren't sure when that SUV may debut. The Trophy Edition model also joins the lineup this year, but only 220 examples will be available and they all come with a complimentary entry to a Land Rover off-road competition in North Carolina that will take place in fall 2021.

As much as we like the look of the two-door 90 model, the four-door 110 is more practical for most buyers. The base P300 powertrain-a 296-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder-seems peppy enough for day-to-day driving, so we'd stick with that; those who plan to tackle serious off-road trails may find the optional six-cylinder or V-8 engines to be better choices. We'd suggest the SE trim level as it adds a number of desirable features to the Defender's spec sheet, including 19-inch aluminum wheels, automatic high-beam headlamps, 12-way power-adjustable front seats, and a digital gauge display. Land Rover offers several accessory packages, each of which outfit the Defender with specifically themed features. There's also a bevy of personalization options available, but we'll leave the customization to you.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The 2022 Defender is powered by a standard turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Of course, every model features four-wheel drive and locking differentials for navigating treacherous terrain. The Defender is also available with a 3.0-liter inline-six which utilizes an electric supercharger and 48-volt hybrid system. Buyers looking for additional performance can opt for the 518-hp supercharged V-8, which we hustled the Defender 90 to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds in our testing. Unlike its predecessor, the Defender has a unibody construction versus a body-on-frame setup, and it replaces the old solid axles with a fully independent suspension. The base suspension utilizes coil springs, but it can be upgraded with an air springs that enable adjustable ride height.

I love the fact Land Rover have not gone down the route of putting everything into a touch screen. Physical buttons are still an essential in my book. So much easier and safer 👍
Exactly, as mechanical engagement is more reliable than electronic. Old school is proven to be better.
This is just in the defender model since it’s more off road oriented. Check out the Range Rover and the velar all touchscreen

I hear a lot of people talk about how unreliable the Defenders are. They’ve come a long way since the first year they were put back on the market, and they’re more reliable now than they once were. I’d never encourage someone to purchase a new to the market vehicle type until they’re on the scene for at least 3-4 years. They’ve had time to work out some of the bugs in the Defenders now. If you’re worried about reliability, don’t plan to own one until the wheels fall off, but if you do, just ensure you can afford the repairs. I don’t hold on to vehicles for more than 5 years, because vehicles just aren’t made to last like they once were. I’ve owned three vehicles that people warned me about, but I never cut corners on mileage maintenance, I didn’t drive them like an a$$hole, and I traded them after 5 years of ownership. If you want the Defender, get the Defender 😊 Just be smart about it, and know your means.
If you are in country where cars are affordable consider yourself as very lucky, I am a South African cars are very expensive here it very hard to change cars in every 5 years of which I believe it should happen that way to every one. Believe I don't own a cause I can't afford to buy one. It just that I love cars and I love to know more about them that is why I watch car reviews .

Beautiful. An old school 4X4. Grew up with Land Rover since I was little living in Malaysia back in the 70s. Now, here in America. I don’t own one, but nice to see one. Reminds me of those days. Don’t call it an SUV. One of the few nameplates that’s has been around before SUV is the term used for this category. It’s an off road 4X4 expedition vehicle.

I had one and it was totally awesome for the first 200 miles. After that we got failed cylinder fire codes and Range Rover couldn't fix it. 3 years now, maybe one day!

It's a beautiful design- one of the best looking offroad SUVs out there and certainly unique. The panel alignment is very inconsistent though- really bad QC on that.

Like most RR products, it's incredibly attractive. I just wish I could trust it to keep me on the road.
I can appreciate your comment, but I’ve owned four Land rover’s now, and have never had any issues, except routine maintenance type things. Are the repairs sometimes more expensive, yes, but it’s also an expensive brand. For all my friends who own them, they’ve not had any real issues either so I often wonder if this line of attack is not more emotional or repetitive than factual that harkens back to a time during the 80s and 90s when they were fraught with issues. I have heard the same comments about Jaguars and Maseratis and I never had any issues with those cars either.

@@stephendummer4609 RR had such issues even when it was owned by Ford. after Tata's takeover, its build quality has improved significantly.
The build quality on land rovers are solid and whcih also reflects on the price tag however land rover/ jaguar the horror stories that are being referred to do with the electronics , land rovers and range rovers can known to fail in that department but tbh must owners know these issues when they buy them , never the less the craftsmanship and development involved in making these is incredible
