You know why I like this song and video the most out of all of their songs? The material matches. The song is talking about a relationship that isn't going well but the two people are putting up a front and making everything look right. But you look closer, and everything isn't what it seems. They start with a small "The writing's on the wall," but end with a giant message saying the same thing like... there are clues, but let's ignore them and go make these beautiful, yet fake things. Then life just shouts at you "Nah, it really is like that. Just look behind you. This is a big sign." I honestly think, although it's not their most technically impressive video, it's certainly their most beautiful one.
Taka “not their most technically impressive video” I know it’s not filmed in a jet in free-fall but I don’t even know how difficult it was to line up the painted walls, especially the end shot. How?!
Here It Goes Again (their most famous video, the treadmill one) does the same thing. The song is about an attempted relationship that's going nowhere, running as hars as you can only to make no progress. Like a treadmill.
The thing about this that I love, is not just the optical illusions, it's the fact that this is a long pan shot. Aka, the video has no cuts to different illusions. Long pans are not very common in films and even if they're incorporated, they're short. This is because long pans are really hard to make. And this video, creates multiple optical illusions with ONE long pan, managing to position the camera at just the right angles at all times, with no cuts in the footage. It is so incredibly fascinating to watch because this video accomplishes something that even Hollywood has a major difficulty with. I love this video.
Yes and the band must have an incredibly much lower budget than say Hollywood so it’s really impressive. A lot of on rid left artwork and designs and creations, plus yes the perfect angles all the way through the pan
@@nguyen-vuluu3150 there's a behind the scenes vid , its edited to be a bit smoother but they did it in one cut from all the fumbling and running from the entire crew and band
The Writings on the Wall and This Too Shall Pass have literally become core memories from my childhood. I'm tearing up just seeing the thumbnail. Love these guys.
It's so annoying to hear people say, "The video was cool, but I didn't like the song." That's the point! The band knows they don't have a typical mainstream sound, so they bust their ass making unique videos in hopes of reaching a bunch of people. Only a fraction of which will like their music, but without videos like this, people like me would not have been exposed to it and become fans of it. I'd rather they take this approach than change their sound in an attempt to fit into the mainstream. Keep up the good work, OK GO!
Can't agree more and that these sounds have been recycled since the musical style's inception in the 80's. But...why are people complaining about the sound if it's enjoyable and the video is tripping great. You know some true/real artists see the music video as a separate art form and sometimes an extension of the song or in the way that it doesn't overshadow the recording and it's lyrics. The way it should be.
I don't see their vids as them trying to reach out to a wider audience - they've always made these unconventional creative videos to go along with their songs right from their first album :) Either way I love them!
I love OK Go not only because they make good music videos, but at the end of a few of theirs, they try to include the production crew into it too, to show off not only their music but the people who helped the design and set building of these elaborate art pieces. This song is also quite personal to me too, and really speaks to a certain point in my life, so thank you OK Go
I'm old (55) so I have an excuse for not seeing any of their videos until now, but now that I've discovered them-i can't stop! They are insanely creative, mesmerizing, fun and above all else the music is good too!
really awesome! did you guys all know its possible to trick over luck? I mean search for this video here: *"Andrew B Cloverman"* and thank me later on xD
3:26 This is an incredibly sad moment somehow... one second he's surrounded by his beloved friends, a second later it becomes clear it was just an illusion and he's actually completely on his own.
I listened to this song once three years ago. Then just last week I started singing "the writing's on the wall" the same way it was sang in this song. I didn't know whether what I was singing was a real song or not, I just kept singing that phrase the same exact way it was sang in this song. It happened consistently everyday, until I got fed up one day and decided to search up writings on the wall song. I went through a few songs then found this, and when I heard it sang the way I was singing it, I was totally freaked out. How could that song randomly come up to me after a few years?
I honestly love the music and the beautiful art. The people who don't like the music or think that this was too much work to be put together in just a 4 minute video don't know the real quality of art. I'm an artist myself. That's why I can enjoy marvelous hard work like this.
I always want to let this clip play in the background, because I like the music. .....but I always stay the whole lengh here to watch the video. It's just awesome and really hard work.
This song is the perfect song to watch twice. They almost tease you with sneak peaks of what's ahead and what is hiding in plain sight. From obvious ones (seconds before panning to the various colorful shapes), to completely "hidden" ones (having the entire box illusion given away at 0:53, starting at 3:02 you can see the writing on the walls, or at 1:27 you can see the bike and other attempts at the paint). This piece shows not just the nature of the song, in which a relationship is dying, and the clues are obvious, but also deceiving the viewer into not seeing the "signs" until it is too late. This gives the spinning, clear and concise words in the center to feel not just out of place, but not surprising to see either. OK Go perfectly shows the complicated dynamic of an amazing visual show, while still maintaining a story.
Things I only noticed after watching the behind the scenes: Dan's pink shoe even before the paint (from previous takes) Damion sliding down the pole Tim putting his glasses back on Other set pieces like the bike and the boxes in the background
Also: Hand moving the background at the beginning Person who gave Tim the mirror is visible at 0:47 and 0:58 Someone in the background at 0:54 The camera shaking whenever it's placed There are just so many hidden reminders of the amount of takes and moving parts that went into this video.
It's weird that I won't know if I like the song or not until I see the video. The creative process of their videos is why I like OKGO. Their songs are ok, but their videos are out of this world!!
comparing their songs and their vids is like comparing the Burst Laser 1 vs the BL2. Against their vids their songs seem kinda bad but that's because their vids are _insanely_ good
Me too. I usually like the song equally with the video but some times I like the video more and it takes time for the song to "grow on me". Although I'm still not that impressed with their take on the Muppet song.
Easily my favourite song, the instrumental is dream-like and the lyrics are amazing, I'm always in a good mood when ever I hear this song, and the music video is extremely clever. Good job OK go!
I think I finally understand how this video makes me feel. It starts off quite slow on the effects, like, they're there, but you get time to process them, as then as the song moves on and you hear how the relationship is coming to a close, the effects come closer together and there's less and less time to see what's happening before we're hurried off to the next one, like trying to cram in as much stuff as possible to something you know is ending. I love OK Go

Honestly, how do these guys even make so many videos of this quality? One or two here and there I can understand, but so many god dam high quality videos... I cannot comprehend this phenomenon....
I was racking my brain thinking of how they could have painted everything to fit so perfectly, and then I had an idea. What if they put a projector in the place where the camera would go, and then they projected the image they wanted to make (square or circle or something else) and then they painted the surfaces that the image was being projected on. It would make it so much easier. I'm not sure if they did that or not, but it would make it so much easier.
These OK Go one-shot music *videos* are fascinating (or the mimic of the one-shot). It actually relates to how most *music* is created. Band members make all the individual riffs, or segments of music, separately (kind of like how films piece together many individual shots). Then add them all together (in music, like in film editing) . *But* the interesting aspect, that most people are not aware of, is that the majority of bands do not even learn to play the songs all together at one single time to even record the album. Much like a single shot in a movie, this actually comes afterwards. So the more difficult, or time consuming part, is actually learning how to play it all together, at one time, for live audiences (like a continuous no-edit one-shot in film). Basically the one continuous shot, really is the visual framework for music, when it's ready to be played live *after* it's been produced. 🎶🎵🎹🎸🥁🎺🎻🎬
These guys make the most creative music videos. Ever. But I almost wonder if their videos get in the way of their music. Like, their music amazing too. But the videos are so insane I can't even relax and enjoy the songs. Do a video where you guys are standing on a beach with chicks in bikinis. Ok don't, just kidding. Keep it up.
"It seems like forever since we had a good day..." Yesterday, I celebrated escaping homelessness by seeing OK GO live. People you need to go listen to them live, gobsmackingly hella amazing! P.S get excited for their new music to be dropped in maybe 2yrs, if memory serves one of their new songs is called "kinda, gotta, wanna- level up"
Hear the crew burst out in delight and triumph and satisfaction (and relief) that they've managed a perfect take for an OK GO video; think about that for EVERY one of Damian's creations. Working with the band must be nerve-wracking at the outset, but SO satisfying when you manage to get it all right, and you get to point at something amazing like this and say "I made that"
While they're popular, it's a goddamn TRAJEDY this band isn't FARRRRR more popular...I mean, there's talent and there's TALENT....CRIMINALLY underrated, imho. How 'tubers that show ppl how to put makeup on end up with more followers than these guys is one of life's great mysteries.
The end of this video makes me so nostalgic. Remember when you could be within 6 feet of someone, giving high fives and shaking hands? Those were the days.
I really like this video for this song. At first I thought they had nothing to do with one another, it was just cool visual art combined with cool audio art in a way that makes them both cooler. But they have a common thread - the creation and destruction of illusions. The song is about a couple (or perhaps just one side of it) admitting that it's not really working out anymore, even though they still care about each other. It's breaking the illusion that just caring is enough and that everything's okay. "It seems like forever since we had a good day", "The mind has no say in affairs of the heart", etc. The video obviously is about optical illusions, but most of them are 'ruined' shortly after being presented. The intent is never to fool the viewer into thinking they're real. It's very transparently a performance. The video never asks you to become immersed in its world, constantly reminding you that it's all 'smoke and mirrors' in a way. And the two meanings start to come together at around 2:15 - "I think I understand you but I don't", and the fact that most of the illusions after that point include close-ups of the band members. As if the video were trying to become more intimate with the viewer. At the end, both illusions are completely shattered. The song ends with the lines "Even if it's the last thing that we do together", finally making it unavoidably clear that the song is about a breakup. And the video ends with showing the viewer not just the camera (in the sequence where Damian is holding it in front of all the mirrors), but at the tail end when it shows all of the crew and such celebrating a successful take. There is no way to avoid being aware that this is a music video that people sat down, planned, and then created - if there was ever a 'magic circle' to take you into the video's fictional world, that ending completely destroys it.
I remember sing this for the first time in my dads car. It was after a session with my old therapist (who is now retired), and we were at sonic for a treat. My dad showed me this music video and I was OBSESSED with this album for weeks after that.
i like how you can see for most of the video they all look so drained because of how many takes they had to do, but at the very end they start to look happier and happier as it comes closer to being done
Tbh tho,I think you're referring to the guy who got side-painted at 1:50,and if so FaZe would actually be right since he is the only one in the band that didn't contribute with vocals.
Omg so many memories! The song makes me feel all warm inside but also scared at the same time. Maybe because it reminds me of the past. And the end when everyone came out always had me shook. Lol
You know why I like this song and video the most out of all of their songs? The material matches. Bryan Chu if they did that it wouldn't be proportional. Since the projecting would be smaller on closer objects and bigger on further away obejects.
Hmm. Have you noticed the way that objects close to us appear larger and those farther away appear smaller?
The parts of the building that get hit by the projector's light would be the same parts that would hit the camera with their own light.

@nick brydun I agree
I laugh so hard, you make me so happy! Sending ALL my love to you ALL! 💖✨😇😇😇😇
💛💛💛💛 Used to listen to them sm when I was a teen.
How they convinced him to shave of half of his beard is beyond me.
How they managed to do it so seemingly quickly is also impressive
near the beginning, you can see half his beard is fake
Off
Stop spoiling
the only time they ever used CGI was with the beard...jk...unless?
It's been 10 years... Still here still loving them...
Masters of music videos.
Hear the crew burst out in delight and triumph and satisfaction (and relief) that they've managed a perfect take for an OK GO video; think about that for EVERY one of Damian's creations.
Working with the band must be nerve-wracking at the outset, but SO satisfying when you manage to get it all right, and you get to point at something amazing like this and say "I made that"
My 5th grade teacher showed me this. And now I'm 2 years graduated and I still love them
While they're popular, it's a goddamn TRAJEDY this band isn't FARRRRR more popular...I mean, there's talent and there's TALENT....CRIMINALLY underrated, imho. How 'tubers that show ppl how to put makeup on end up with more followers than these guys is one of life's great mysteries.
The end of this video makes me so nostalgic. Remember when you could be within 6 feet of someone, giving high fives and shaking hands? Those were the days.
:(
things are getting better
@@1.4142 indeed
they really do
I really like this video for this song.
I only just realized I left almost this exact same comment a few months ago. I apologize! I just really love this video!
Does anyone know the band that makes the music for OK GO's viral videos? They're very catchy.
Ok Go is the band
Really?
It was a joke, right? I think some people didn't get it. I laughed! =D
Too good. XD
Darude is making all the stuff for them.
"Sandstorm" was the first track Darude made for them.
dormammu i've come to bargain
Oh shit waddup
Oh well-played. Well played indeed. :)
Dormammu, I've come to bargain
(Laughs in background) I love that joke.
Isn’t that from doctor strange 😀
Excelente! Maravilloso video. Creatividad Total. Saludos desde Colombia!
I remembered watching these videos last night, at 10 pm and I wrote it down and now in the morning I’m watching all of them again.
The guy at 2:13 really looks like Benedict Cumberbatch when he's upside down.. Does anyone else see this??
Talia Fore yep, i see it, haha thats cool
Talia Fore Sherlock is that you ? Season 4 pls !!!1111
Talia Fore there is actually a science behind that. and its pretty cool
OMG yes he does lol
I remember sing this for the first time in my dads car. It was after a session with my old therapist (who is now retired), and we were at sonic for a treat. My dad showed me this music video and I was OBSESSED with this album for weeks after that.
Love it! Have to watch at least twice to catch all the cool stuff!
Wow... and no cut-aways... one long tracking shot. THAT'S impressive
Dave Robison - OK GO does some awesome videos. There's a bunch of good ones on TH-cam.
I still adore the treadmill one :)
Andrew Gillman - That's a classic!
i like how you can see for most of the video they all look so drained because of how many takes they had to do, but at the very end they start to look happier and happier as it comes closer to being done
i think message of the video is that things that doesnt make sense to you, they might. just from different angle/perspective.
Oooooor you're just overthinking something that's just supposed to be a cool video. But hey, I've been wrong before.
Interesting. Thanks.
I think the meaning is is if you have a buzzkill friend, do drugs together
Oh my god I never realized that! Mostly because I was so caught up with the video that I didn't pay any attention to the actual lyrics haha
Whoa. That's fucking *genius*.
the cubes at 1:24 got me shook
I didn't know vsauce could sing
+Ambishion what he's getting at is that one of the guys looks like vsauce Mike
Tbh tho,I think you're referring to the guy who got side-painted at 1:50,and if so FaZe would actually be right since he is the only one in the band that didn't contribute with vocals.
but what does "sing" means???
well dan is the drummer, so i doubt he really want to contribute vocally
What is "vsauce"?
Ok Go does not get the love they deserve. All of their music videos are creative and painstakingly genius.
You guys never fail to impress me with your music videos! My eyes the entire time O_O haha!

Omg so many memories! The song makes me feel all warm inside but also scared at the same time. Maybe because it reminds me of the past.
And the end when everyone came out always had me shook. Lol
The quality video is freaking amazing, hats off for the production team you guys really do a great job👏🔥🔥
3:15 That smile when you know you're on the home stretch
"We're past all the parts that can go horribly wrong and ruin the take!"
I think he noticed the guy who walked off the stairs lost his balance and luckily fell off screen.
The fact that this was ONE TAKE is blowing my MIND
Wow. The Lord showed me this last year in a dream. He is AMAZING!!
I'm so amazed by your art. Keep doing it. wow.
