It is truly amazing this little part (now $6 on Amazon) will leave you stranded. Yesterday taking an offramp, coming out of the turn I dropped it into 2nd, stepped on the pedal and nothing, no wonderful hum & lurch forward... just despair in my heart :( So I came home and the first place I went was here because I love watching all the content. I watched this, went to the car, removed the trim and there was my throttle cable just hanging out... literally, no bushing. @Mark, a HUGE THANK YOU, not only for this video but all the work you do for us Zed-3ers out here. Your content is priceless and you deserve to be knighted, Sir Mark of the Zeds we will call you :)
USCG Mark, thank you so much!!! on Monday, April 1 the Z left me stranded in Wilmington and it took 3 1/2 hours to make it back with a tow truck. Could not get the car in the shop until April 15. I took a chance and ordered a throttle bushing using your screen shot of the part # for $5.75 from Amazon on April 2. part came today I took the cover off and lo and behold, guess what? throttle bushing missing!! WAHOO! Not only are you teaching me, you are inspiring me! - USN Deb ❤
Found this video while stranded on the side of the highway... Luckily I got it jerry rigged enough to get home but glad it's such an affordable and easy repair. Thanks!
I checked my Z -- it does indeed have a "toebox" cover (FYI, there are a number of this cover on eBay). I never really recognized this before since it so snugly nestled up under the dash area. So, in the future I will check the bushings you identify in your video. Many thanks. 😀
Thank you Mark. As an older Z3 owner myself, I appreciate that some repairs are now more awkward than they would have been some years ago. Great video and useful info. 👍
@@MomentofZed super! My clutch pedal has little flex when pushed to floor… I want to be proactive. I have special method for installing antenna grommet i can share.
After dislocating every muscle in my back and failing I found your video. It was great. My 3 is 150K and everything is failing. Very disappointed in the enginering and qualility. I do have to praise the body after 27 years in New England I still have no rust.
Thank you! If you had not shared this, I would never have a reason to check this unless my accelerator quit working. I checked and the bushing was completely missing in my car. Have no idea how long it has been gone. Waiting on the bushing to arrive to correct this.
This isn't related to this video. But I wanted to say that you have several videos that have been very helpful to us. I bought my 16y/o a 1996 BMW Z3 for his first car. Actually bought it for him when he was 15 so he could start learning to drive a 5spd. But he loves the car. He just got his driver's license, so he has been out running the roads on his own......lol. But you have some great videos that are helping us take care of some things on the Z3.
The tool worked like a charm and so did your instructions! It was the exact same issue for my 1997 Z3 as for yours. I also replaced the bushings (following your instructional video as well) and has the code light up. It turned out that there WAS a loose connector under the passenger seat, but the light wouldn’t turn off, regardless. Less than a minute with the reset tool and everybody in the house is happy again. Thanks for the videos!
Excellent video and I appreciate your effort. Lost the use of the accelerator pedal on my '96 328i with 37,000 original miles on it two days ago and suspect the bushing gave out. 110 in Phoenix today, but your video makes replacement of the grommet look doable. Thanks!
After three brief attempts to replace the grommet in 110+ degree heat, I threw in the towel and took the car to a local mechanic (I temporarily secured the linkage with a paperclip). Mind you, I'm 75 with some serious physical issues, and contorting myself into that footwell nearly trapped me for life (just kidding, but it was challenging extracting myself after one of the attempts). What I couldn't do, Mike, the mechanic did in five minutes. And what he knew, that I didn't, was that once you remove the panel under the steering wheel, there is another underlying panel. With an extension on his socket wrench, he was able to reach the deeply seated bolts on that underlying panel and remove it, providing significantly more room to more easily maneuver around in the footwell to insert the grommet and reattach the linkage. My BMW is the convertible, if that makes any difference.@@MomentofZed
@@vvgmhod4 i get it! I havent been back down there to do the bushings due to the heat in Florida. Im glad it worked out for you. Ill have to remove the other panel to do the other ones. In the z3 any interior panel removal is fraught with danger due to cheap plastic!
Well done. At some point I fear I also have to put my body in these weird angles. And again it's always the Penny parts which can bring you troubles. Best regards from Germany!
The throttle cable bushing on my 1999 Z3 broke and I was stranded at an intersection. No fun. Eventually got the car towed home and repaired the throttle bushing. So, being proactive, I decided to replace the throttle cable bushing on my 2001 Z3 to avoid a repeat breakdown. But to my surprise, the 2001 does not use a throttle cable or bushing. Instead, it uses an electrically controlled throttle reostat mechanism to control throttle movement, much more complicated and expensive, but I'm not sure it's any more reliable.
That is very interesting! Hadn't heard that from anyone yet. Now that is all cars of course. My mazda is that way. On the old one you could repair with a cable tie in an emergency. Dont know what to do with a bad reostat.
@@MomentofZed Just popped my panel open and sure enough half of it is gone. Part is ordered. Looks like my project for this week. Another part under $10 that could ruin your day.
@@MomentofZed Well I finally got around to replacing mine today before heading to Zfest in a couple weeks. I've had the bushing for almost a year, lol. Glad I did, as the old one crumbled in my hand. Do you know the names/part numbers of the other yellow piece you're intending to replace below? Curious about that so I can order all at the same time.
Not sure if this is a z3 thing but on an e36 The hook of the cable should be entering from left side of the grommet, exiting the right side (not the right to left position like in your video)
