- Today we'll attack the A/C evaporator from above (we did it from underneath the car on the last video); along the way we'll learn how to remove the cowl and check the cowl drain system as well!

I did similar a while ago..You can take it one step further by removing the blower to clean more surface area of the evaporator. Additionally, after the foam breaks down use a squirt bottle to clean and flush out the system with water..You will see all the water and foam dripping out the bottom.

Extremely interesting, enlightening and informative! I will have to give this careful thought to performing myself in the near future. I noticed that you did not used any compressed air to blow down in the evaporator fin area to further agitate and remove loose material. If you were to do this again, would you do anything differently? Did you apply any kind of adhesive to the rubber gaskets you removed? One project I have been thinking on is replacing the rubber gaskets around the door openings. You know, by the time you amass your Z3 videos, you probably will have fully disassembled your Z. Just waiting for when you will remove all of the body and the engine and put in a larger one! More fun to come! Thanks for a great video! 😀
The compressed air didnt occur to me oddly enough. No new adhesive on the seals. There is no upward or lateral force to move them. Thanks as always Walter!
Very good explanation. I am about to dive in on my 98 to get to the wiper park switch. The test point inside the car is at ground so I suspect a mouse chewed wire somewhere under the hood.

Thanks for posting! Did you use any sealant when you refitted the plastic cowl? Noted the factory applied sealant had dried up and degraded. Not sure if that within itself could cause water ingress.

Another great video. Hey, did you ever make a video showing how to replace the bushings on the brake and clutch pedals? (I did see the one on the gas pedal which was very helpful)
i have a 1996 z3 and my ac blows perfect when its on the window setting and the feet setting, but when i put it on the main setting it blows very little. i dont know if something is clogged or i need a new fan. do you have any ideas on what to do.

All made in the plant in South Carolina, correct.
Can you rinse off the evaporator before assembly? Love that puller! I'm replacing the cowl on my e36 318i....need.
I've read on the forums people do rinse it.
As his neighbors wonder what the heck he is doing.......

**ELEPHANT NOSE DRAINS **
This morning I have cleaned out my Elephant nose drains on my Z3, located under the scuttle panel.
Both drains were completed blocked with debris, rotting leaves soil, grit etc so a job definately worth doing.
Both the drains were fed through the relevant holes and out into the engine bay, yet when I came to replace them, I noticed that there was an almost natural fit and location for them slide internally rather than hang into the engine bay.
Can anyone confirm what the exact position and location of the fitted elephant drains should be..
1. Hanging out into the engine bay
2. Fitted internally.
Any photos of anyone else’s Elephant drains in situ would be appreciated.

They should exit near the sides of the clutch/tranny bellhousing if I remember correctly. I discuss it at 11:30 or so in the video.

yeah, I picked up on your comment in the video.
However. My rubber drains were hanging through the portal into the engine bay. Thereby allowing water to drip into the bay onto the top of transmission casing or thereabouts..
Have you removed you full drains previously, and if so where did you rehouse them to.. Ie through the hole into the engine bay, or down through the tunnel of the bulkhead…
You can actually get a good view of each drain on the holes in the bulkhead..
@oliverjones1136 never have removed the drains, so where I got them is where they are. Are yours damaged?
No not damaged at all… and easily replaced back in situ..
I watched your video re cleaning them out then embarked on job this morning.. completely blocked.. !
However, I noticed that from looking down I could see the bottom of the elephant drains sticking out the hole into engine compartment, which I then didn’t think anything about.. except for realising. I could easily pull them out entirely and remove from car.. which I did.. gave them a good wash in the sink..
but then when replacing I also realised that they had what seemed like a natural fit into the same place. But the bottom routed into the tunnel, rather than straight out into the engine compartment above the transmission.. so now I actually don’t know which is the proper route for these drains…

What's a good price for a Z3 these days? I've been eyeing one up that's optioned the exact way I want, but it's got some cosmetic damage. I've seen the kbb stuff but just wondering what the prices are like in other places.
Hard to give a hard number without knowing the details. I use cars and bids to monitor prices. Take a look you can filter to just z3 auction activity.
What's a good prize for a lunch these days??

Not sure! Probably a state that doesn't require a front plate. So whatever is up front is a decoration.

Hi Mark from Pennslvania here. PA does not require a front so the front plate is considered decorative. I ordered plate from a company in Germany that custom make Euro Plates. That is actually 1 of 3 German plate I have.
