Wielding batons and iron rods, nearly two dozen Bajrang Dal activists today (Dec 29, 2014) vandalised theatres screening Aamir Khan blockbuster 'PK' in Ahmedabad and Bhopal for making "fun" of Hindu Gods and godmen. Aamir Khan-starrer 'PK' has been at the centre of a controversy with Hindu outfits demanding a ban on the film for allegedly hurting religious sentiments. The film has sparked protests by Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Bajrang Dal, Hindu Janajagruti Samiti and All India Hindu Mahasabha while police complaints have been filed in several parts of country alleging that it mocked Hindu gods and its contents were "highly provocative". Yoga guru Ramdev demanded that the movie should be boycotted and all those associated with it "ostracised" from society. While the right wing leaders lashed out at Aamir insinuating that he "insulted" Hindu religion because he was a Muslim, the actor has said, "We respect all religions. All my Hindu friends have seen the film and they have not felt the same". "Even Raju (Hirani) is Hindu, so is Vinod (Chopra) and so is Abhijat (Joshi). In fact 99 per cent of the crew was Hindu. No one would have done such a thing," the actor said, referring to the director, producer and the scriptwriter of the film. Swami Chakrapani of Hindu Mahasbha alleged that the film's depiction of 'gow mata', Hindu eities like Lord Shiva is an "insult of Sanatan Dharm". "The way they have questioned the making of pilgrimage to Amarnath.... And they have deliberately given such comments so that their film is a hit and they earn more money," he said, adding, "They have hurt the sentiments of all religions and all should get together to ensure this does not happen". "When it is about Christianity or Islam, people think 100 times before they speak anything (against the religions). But when they talk about Hinduism, people say or show whatever comes to their mind without giving it even a single thought. This is shameful," Ramdev told reporters in Mumbai. "People who speak in a bad light about Hindu culture should be ostracised from the society and their films should also be shunned by the people," he said. While the Censor Board too earned the ire of the protesting outfits, its chief Leela Samson said the Board will not remove any scenes from the film. "Every film may hurt religious sentiments of somebody or the other. We can't remove scenes unnecessarily because there is something called creative endeavour where people present things in their own way," the Chairperson of Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) said "We have already given certificate to 'PK' and we can't remove anything now because it's already out for public viewing," she told PTI. Meanwhile, Muslim religious leaders today supported the demand for ban on alleged "objectionable" scenes in the film to ensure that communal harmony is not disturbed.

I watched & enjoyed the movie and i am an atheist but i oppose a few things done in it
1. Why mainly Hinduism was depicted wrongly?i can tell 10s of similar superstitions in other religions with ample practical proofs..
2. The alien in the movie was confused with the religious rituals and notions of a specific religion AND he tried to impose his confusions on the masses through movie
3. I am an atheist and don't believe in God's existence but i can clarify (answer) the dubious points made by PK in the movie, scientifically. (viz why to worship idol, why are tantra & mantra performed etc etc)
4. It's a mis-leading movie based upon somebody's confusions (ignorance) and film makers didn't try to do sufficient research
5. I accept the existence of fake saints in Hindu religion (WHO ARE PRESENT IN ALL OTHER RELIGIONS TOO) and i oppose them too.
dilip, i am a muslim and believe in God. I also happen to respect the hindu religion. i do believe that any hindu would be slightly offended by the movie, but as a muslim, i was also a bit offended by this movie. yet, i dont think any sort of protests by either hindus, or muslims is warranted. I can understand that a sikh shown begging might be highly offensive to a sikh. Scene where the alien questions the God's idol or asks whether it works or not are out of ignorance. Any believing hindu would tell you, the idol itself is not God but infact it helps them to connect with God. A muslim might suggest, Idol worship is prohibited (in Islam). A muslim has no right to suggest to a hindu how to practice his/her faith. I think we should all learn to mind our own business. One important point Aamir or the character brought about was, don't try to protect your God. God is too powerful and too strong. He does not need anyone's protection. As a matter of fact, we (i.e any person who believes in God, whether a hindu, muslim, sikh, etc) need HIS protection.

Some might say, hinduism does not condone violence either. But VHP in the name of hindutva went out with iron rods. I believe any practicing hindu should feel ashamed of that as any muslim would by any act of violance or terror in the name of islam. Islam believes in empowering women. There are a lot of highly educated female Muslims I know. Some mullah issuing a fatwa that gilrs shouldn't goto school is a misrepresentation of Islam. First of all, who is this Mullah to issue a fatwa? Just like there are fake Godmen in hindu, there are such fake Godmen in Islam who assert religious authority, really for political dominance. Similarly, no muslim today has a right to declare a holy war (jihad). My point is, we should learn to respect other religions and stop minding other peoples business.

I dont believe in god at all but i have read many religious texts like Gita, Qur'an, Bible and other Vedas.
All of these teach us the human values, how to live happily in a society and this world. How to behave and have a correct attitude towards life.
Through various tales or poems the meaning being conveyed in these texts are ideal realisation of human life. God is jus a source of hope because hope is what drives us in the bad times.

I think the film highlighted a key point about these fake Gurus who are out there to just get money of vulnerable people. I don't see why people are getting angry. People rely too much on these fake gurus and forget to use their brains. Just like the movie 'The Interview', people need to understand its MOVIE and not real life. You forget about reality for a few hours and enjoy what's being shown. I think it was another great performance by Aamir Khan.

I think this movie was not strong enough and lacked a good plot. PK's plot could have been better if he had targetted all religions equally. Yes, there are many people who take undue advantage of the trust placed upon them and Hinduism is of course against that. But it does not end here. Hinduism is much much greater. And it is because of the lack of knowledge about it that people start believing that whatever is shown in the movie is all that Hinduism has (i.e. only fake babas, rituals, stone worship etc.). If Hinduism was based on inequality as you say, how come Hindus can say "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam"? If the movie really wanted to expose the wrong acts done by people in the name of God, it should also have shown what true Hinduism means. Instead, it has created a wrong impression in the minds of the people watching.

Im a christian from the philippines i watch the P.K movie many times and.i love it. The movie want to show us what is really hapening in our real life the fact is "SOME" people are using religion to gain money and go thru to their own pocket and also for their own popularity. Many great things have come out of India - from great art, impressive architecture, enchanting music, and of course millions of brilliant and educated minds, which have brought so much good and productivity to this world. Now, I think it is safe to say that with the release of PK, India has produced another tremendous achievement. India has produced one of the most ingenious cinematic critiques of organized religion, and has done so in a manner that cleverly dispenses with all the esoteric academic baggage associated with religious criticism, and skillfully distills such criticism on a level that the common man can understand, and will find immensely entertaining.
Contrary to those who believe PK unfairly malign's Hinduism, an honest and objective review of the film shows that PK is critical of all organized systems of religion, and asserts, quite correctly, that all such religious systems are too petty, parochial, greedy, sectarian, bigoted, counterproductive and too impotent to be the work of any divine creator. When people ask why Hinduism seemed to get the disproportionate brunt of the criticism in this film, the answer is not because the makers of the film have anything against Hindus. Instead, Hinduism is the largest religious group in India, so it stands to reason that a film made in India, about Indians, will focus on Hinduism more, and Islam secondly, given that Islam is the 2nd largest religious group in India. If this film was made in the United States, about Americans, then it would have focused mostly on the silliness and destructiveness of the Christian faith.
In any case, it is about time that a country with such a highly educated population, and a country which has a rich history of intellectualism, should critically examine the religious traditions within its borders - religious systems that have no evidence to substantiate them, and that invariably lead to unnecessary strife and the separation of people who would, in circumstances without religious impediments, be close friends, lovers, and even spouses. In an enlightened age, we should no longer allow Christian priests, Muslim Imams, Jewish Rabbis, Hindu gurus, etc. etc. etc. to pretend to have knowledge that they cannot possibly have, and furthermore, we should not give them the power to segregate us along religious lines that, when examined, turn out to be entirely imaginary. The world would be a better place without such superstitions and the powerful systems of profiteering that they have erected. The existence of God has been debated for thousands of years and will probably be debated for thousands more. What should be clear is that, IF a God exists, and if he is as noble as we claim, then these religious systems cannot possibly represent his majesty. They all embody too much of humanity's foolishness to be at all representative of something that magnificent.

Arnab was dealing with wrong persons in his show. The representatives from BHP and BD are basically exploiters of religion. Their values, perception and understanding are altogether different from Shoba Dey, Arnab and other enlightened peoples connected to studio. In every religion half or quarter educated so called religious pundits and gurus tend to behave in the same fashion. When they open their mouth as if they have hot lines with the God. If a guy having low IQ turns out a religious guru in one fine morning who is going to listen him. These bunch of illiterate religious misleads very cleverly try to dominate in the social life by exuding their closeness to the God. At least the poor, unfettered, distressed people tend to believe these so called fanatics. Because helplessness induce men to rely more and more on destiny. The religious guru takes the space and overwhelm the men and women in distress. Time has come now that Indian educated middle class should get rid of these tribes of guru, sant, baba, godman and the like. Three cheers for Arnab for conducting the show with steadfastness and fortitude.
