Brother…this is the type of music that transcends race, generations, economics, etc. This is music that speaks truth across the realities of life that we all experience no matter where you find yourself on this Earth.

It speaks volumes that a song about living simply is the one that so easily transcends all the complications (race, age, status, etc) that we construct around ourselves. It really shows just how unnecessary all those constructions are. When it comes to living a fulfilling life, none of that matters one bit.

I was raised by a single mother from the age of 2, and she really held it down the best she could, but man sometimes a young boy just needs someone (a grandmother, a mother, in my case a father) to sit them down and just let them know everything will be alright. It gets easier with time and even though I'm turning 40 in a few months... the song, the words, his voice... it all just hits me a little too hard, I couldn't help but tear up writing this. I learned throughout my years life is hard, it's just hard for everyone. I try to do my best to not make it any harder on myself or for anyone else. I dunno man I guess just love the people who you have in your life, even if it's just a hand on their shoulder... it goes a long way.

I loved your comment, especially the part about “even if it’s a hand on the shoulder”.
For some it’s hard to show love so they show it by putting a hand on your shoulder, arm or like my Daddy does when I’m laying with my feet up, he’ll pinch my big toe. I’m 51 now and he still does this, and I can feel it in my heart when he does it.

I think they sounded better live. First saw them in 1976, and didn't even know who they were. I went to see Ted Nugent. Ronnie came out on the stage barefooted, took a swig of Jack Daniels, put it on the stage by the mic, and introduced the band. They then proceeded to totally blow Ted Nugent out of the water. I was hooked. I was also at their last show in Greenville, SC, in October of 1977. We got the news the next day, and all my friends came to my house to grieve together.

@@nickypoundtown9568 I saw _Bad Company_ at the Reno Rib Cook off in 2012 I think. Great show!
Also I saw _Lynyrd Skynyrd_ at what was then called the Reno Hilton back in like 1994. Zakk Wilde's band _Pride and Glory_ opened with a _Ted Nugent_ sandwich in the middle. THAT whole show was amazing!

Lot of times we don't appreciate this kind of advice until we are older. No one wants to hear this when they are 17 and they feel the world is about to become theirs.

I first heard this when I was 17 and I found the truth in it back then. I was always told that I had an “old soul”, but now that I’m pushing 50, everyone now tells me that I live like a younger man. And I have pretty much lived this song for all those years; lot of happiness and sadness over all those intervening years, but I wouldn’t trade any of it.

As a mother of two sons, this song is close to my heart. The cover by Shinedown is beautiful too.

Imo its better than the o.g. version. And I love l.s. but this song is sung so much more passionately by shinedown/brett.

Shinedown's cover is ok. I can also say the vocalist is technically better but, Ronnie's vocals fit this tune better. I still prefer this version hands down.

You know how vocals go, I'm surprised how deep your understanding of it goes! I'm not a big fan of Lynard Skynyrd, but I'm now a fan of yours. I can appreciate someone who can appreciate genres of music that don't necessarily match up with their background or the way we may stereotype them. Good job. Respect

You don't have to lie to kick it. This song makes me cry every time I hear it. My mom passed away in 2019. When I'm not having such a good day this song seems to find my playlist. Have a blessed day everybody.
