    Although the new electric forecourt is very swanky I’m interested in how they will cope with the heavy load when everyone has EV’s. Petrol forecourts that take only a minute or two of your time filling the car can be congested at times. When it takes upwards of 40 minutes to have any kind of charge that will be good for a medium journey the congestion will be unmanageable.

      If and when everyone has ev's, the grid will not be able to cope and will shut down , due to overload! End of problem and we will all go back to diesel and petrol because everyone would be dying due to lack of heating etc. Unless of course someone invents nuclear fusion, which really is not on the cards, way it looks at the mo.
      EVs ? I don't think so.

      They have enormous battery banks in shipping containers on site (you can see them out the window at one point). They contain enough energy to charge cars for over a week, so it’s not an issue. They have thought of that.

    As I've mentioned, I got rid of my Jaguar IPace and returned back to a petrol car however my brother recently got an Ipace, his wife has a Fiat 500 petrol version. They live near Leeds and recently had a weeks holiday in Torquay. My brother is 6ft 4 so it's a bit of a squeeze in the Fiat but rather than taking the Jag and go down in comfort they chose to go all that way in the Fiat 500 just to keep the time down on the journey and avoid the anxiety that you get with an electric car. If that doesn't convince people what it's like to drive electric, nothing will. 🤣🤣🤣

      There’s a coincidence, we had a week in Torquay using our EV with no problems. I stopped once at Ionity Chippenham on the way there, Lidl while in Torquay and again at Ionity Chippenham on the way back. 480 mile round trip. Total charging cost including the home charging before we left £23. Petrol car would need to achieve 158MPG at that rate. No range anxiety.

    • @lazyguy4393
      @lazyguy4393 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@EVil-ob8in The point is, there aren't always chargers where you need them. The motorways are fine but once you're on the A roads you have to plan your route carefully and have a backup charger planned just in case your first choice is out of action. Try going to Whitby.
      There's no doubt electric is cheaper but I could probably do the same route in 2 to 3 hours less. I suppose it depends on what price you put on your time..
      There's also the issue of daytrips away. There just ain't enough hours in a day for a 150 mile day trip to the coast or countryside with the family in an ev unless you're very lucky to find a destination charger that someone else isn't already using.

    One of the problems with driving everyone off the road and on to public transport is the cost. Both my boys get the bus to school and back £4 each way..so £16 a day in total. My eldest son takes his test next week. In his car he'll be able to take both of them to school and back for £1.50! My wife had a conference in Taunton just over a week ago...going by train would have cost her firm much more than the 40p a mile they pay if she drives (and the journey was much quicker by car)...she also took a colleague...and brought 2 on the return journey due to a rail strike which would have meant another night in the hotel for the woman who came by train. She worked out that she saved her firm (a charity) over £600!!
    Private cars are popular because they are often the better (quicker and more cost effective) option.
    EV's should be able to stand on their own merits...if they are not better than ICE vehicles then they should go the way of the Dodo.

    Although that forecourt looked clean and fresh, and maybe the future, considering the time of day it wasn't exactly crowded! I never like paying for anything on a card without either a receipt or at least a notification of the price/cost. But the biggest issue for me, as you rightly mentioned, is the time it adds to each journey - absolutely ridiculous. Meanwhile don't get me started on the crap reliability of the charging points, again as you illustrated. EVs, pah!!

    The concern I have about EVs is the charging infrastructure when we are all forced into EVs. Petrol cars take about 5 minutes or less to refuel. EVs take 10 times that to recharge based on what you have shown us. That means that when we all have to drive EVs the charging stations will have to be massively larger than current service stations by about 10 times to handle the demand. They will have to provide cover from the weather, a restaurant and toilet facilities for hundreds of motorists at one time. There will be long queues at the entrance to the charging station, especially on highways with high volume traffic and frustrated people wasting hours of their life when they could be getting to their destination. I have noted that EV charging places are always tucked away in some far corner with no shelter about, out of sight, providing no safety or security for the driver while recharging the car. The proponents of EVs, like all those who advocate the green philosophy have not thought through the issue very well and it is being implemented in worse than a half baked manner. Just imagine the assaults that will happen as frustrated drivers fight over who is next at a particular charger and the number of people stranded when they get to a charger that has been vandalised or is otherwise not functioning. It will be mayhem.

    Great video! I'm from Finland, and the push towards EVs is heavy here as well. In a country, where distances are long and winters cold... Doesn't make sense to me, but apparently the movement is to shut down 80% of the country and have every single person work from (concrete cube apartment) home in white collar jobs. Funny thing here is, on-road traffic creates approx. 20% of annual CO2 emissions here, yet I'm not reading much news on media about what is done to that remaining 80%. Instead, just the ICE cars are bad and if possible, you shouldn't drive at all.

I drive 30 to 40 minutes to work based on traffic and weather conditions. Also work for a company that is heavy into supplying racing equipment so if they can legally force us by 2030 to have everyone in an electric car, I have no idea what I would do for work. Not close enough to retire but to old for most companies to hire. I just don't think the oil companies and the big car companies are going to go away without a fight. Yes a few have made hybrid and some have done a couple all electric. However America is huge and we don't have the set up for electric like we do for gas powered cars. Sorry to flood you with comments… I was born in the middle of Illinois in 1961. Only a few years before I was born, the last of the electric interurban trains and in-city electric trams were eliminated… BUT: for several decades before then, in that cluster of small cities spaced about fifty miles apart in the middle of Illinois, Decatur (my birthplace and where I grew up), Springfield, Bloomington-Normal, Champaign-Urbana, and possibly Danville, I understand that one could get on an electric tram in many parts of those cities, go to the train station, take an electric train to the next city over, take another electric train to the next city again if desired, and ride an electric tram to many parts of the destination city.
    All gone. Now if people in those places must switch to electric vehicles again, they’re really in trouble. Electric buses in each city, perhaps, and lousy electric cars. Good luck to them.
    The trains between cities were run by the electric companies. Unheard of now. Perhaps I would have hated actually using those trams and trains. I don’t know. Before my time.

    One country in Africa has something like 70% of the world's mines for the raw material needed for batteries, China owned 80% of the production. Many mine owners use children to mine as they require much smaller tunnels to crawl through than adults. They work 10 to 12 hours a day for $1 a day!

      Exactly. The forecourts will have to be out of town, built on green belt land (controversial). The current four or two pump forecourts in towns and villages will not be able to adapt to the EV charging like the one shown. They will disappear. So how many of these mammoth charging centres will we need to provide the same service as current fuel stations? I still feel the infrastructure will not exist.

    Part of the reason people tell you to only charge to 80% is the batteries take much longer to charge past that point. Mine can charge at around 120kW when it’s nearly empty but slows down to more like 11kW when nearly full. In other words, it can save you time to split the charging.

    As one who in the past would have to drive 200-300 miles in a day to attend a customer meeting and return home, I am glad that I am now retired. Clearly EV’s will put an end to that sort of practice and EV’s will force sales people to stay overnight or companies will have to change the way they work. Great video although if I am critical it could be a little shorter, but then if you are a sales person driving an EV and having to stay away overnight you will have plenty of time to view it. Perhaps the Adult stores on the A1 have seen a future with EV’s and people staying away from home on business.

      As someone with an electric car that doesn’t have a vested interest in exploiting peoples confirmation bias I can tell it isn’t a problem. My car will real world do 230 miles on a charge. I can charge it to do that on my drive at home for less than £5. If I plug it in at rapid charger, I can add 100 miles of range back on in about 25 mins for £18. Perfect time for a pee and grabbing a drink. I can then plug it in at home for a dirt cheap overnight charge again for the following day.

    Other morning after a rain storm, I was driving an ICE car, usually I take a right at this traffic light but there was a huge puddle so I kept driving straight. Had I been driving the EV and I went through that puddle (which probably wasn't salt water but maybe, there is a fresh water river near it that leads to the ocean), then in the back of mind I would wonder if I waterlogged the underfloor battery which can lead to random thermal runaway ie 5,000 degree Fahrenheit unstoppable Lithium Battery Fire. And what happens as the undercarriage of these vehicles rust through from all the winter salt on the roads? We shall see...

    We have to take our car and motorhome for a test every two years here in France, every time I put an additive in the fuel tank which gives perfect emission figures, so why do I need to scrap my car? There is a gadget built in to a Citroen C5 which injects an additive into the fuel intake as you drive which gives zero bad emission. I dont know if any other manufacturers do the same but why cant fuel suppliers add an emission additive at source so all cars can drive cleanly? Fuel is never going to run out so

    I have driven from Western Australia to Queensland. I left around 6am Monday morning and arrived around 4pm Friday afternoon. This was 5 days of hard driving at speed, probably around 1000km per day, there was no traffic on my route. If I tried that in an electric car I would still be travelling. I drive between 200 - 500km per day for work, sometimes more, sometimes in remote areas. There's no way an electric car would work here. The EV charging centre looks set up for plenty of impulse buying as people while away the time it takes to charge their cars. As you say, it's not just the cost of the electricity, it's the cost of the coffee and the other impulse buys too. Petrol and Diesel are about half of the UK price here. My personal car is a 6 litre V8. I won't be giving it up any time soon. There's no congestion or clean air charges here in Western Australia, we don't have MOT tests or the same thing under a different name either. It's pretty good for us motorists.

  • @UncleAbs
    @UncleAbs ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Interesting that you should bring up cost of charging per mile compared to diesel. My diesel Civic manages about 550 miles from a (now expensive compared to petrol) £70 tank full, so the cost per mile is probably comparable to home charging. Even more strange is that my "dirty" diesel produces so little CO2 that I have no road tax to pay (yet) but will get stung in Birmingham's ULEZ zone. My fiancee has an old petrol Corsa that chucks out 50% more CO2, and yet is ULEZ exempt.
    Clearly the government is doing everything it can to get diesels off the road. Of course, when they promoted diesels over petrol, they were slow and agricultural. Now they are nice engines that get more mpg and last longer (so fewer new car purchases), so governments are making less from car tax sales and fuel tax from diesel drivers. Little wonder that the government don't want the average joe to be able to drive them...
    Of course the government has an ulterior motive for getting us all into EV's. They don't want people like me to be able to hold onto a "dirty" diesel for 20 years plus - think of all the sales tax they are missing out on. Far better to force them to change their cars, and then to have something disposable (which, given the requirement for new batteries would practically make any EV an economic write-off, I very much class them as disposable items). Green issues? Nope. It's all about the money.

Car of the year always an EV these days no coincidence. We are constantly being told that we don’t need to travel more than 30 miles so you don’t need anything else. Well I’m sorry but our fossil fuel cars are designed for all requirements and give us freedom to choose and are convenient and flexible for all kinds of travel and I don’t want to lose that thank you. In 2010 when I left corporate life to start my own business, I gave up my company car. Then I did the maths - my car spent it's life at airport car parks, car parks in city centres when visiting clients, in the garage at my home it was parked more than used. I had to pay to park it as well at cost of owning it and using it. So went I for short rental (by the hour), taxi's, trains and traditional rental it is much cheaper. Lets face you don't need to worry about rentals, treat them bad, and you can pick different models. I pick on my mood and what I want to do (let my inner boy racer out). I have a long term contract with my rental company so that saves even more money and they deliver it to where ever I want. And it is tax deductible , no way the tax man is going find out what I amusing for so I throw them a bone of personal use. For me paying to park a chunk of metal didn't cost in, not even leasing.

Surely the future of motoring and travelling should easier , cheaper , enjoyable and faster. However thud is showing EV being the complete opposite in all ways . First of the range is poor , it’s expensive now to charge and as you have shown slower and you end buying things you don’t need whilst waiting to charge. How would you cope with kids hanging around at these places for example. You are correctly it’s not the future, it’s certainly not fit for purpose . Just a thought...Emissions are the big talk for getting people to convert to EV's...The EU has set an interim target of 55% emission reduction by 2030, set in the European Climate Law. The EU has launched various initiatives to reach these targets. If countries leaders reach these various targets earlier, are they given a cash bonus incentive and a better standing on the political front? This could be a major reason for the hype, the hype which actually covers up the damning facts around EV production resourcing and bad investment in the infrastructure needed. The faster public /companies convert the quicker the figures drop. This is not a bad thing for the environment we would all agree, as road travel accounts for three-quarters of transport emissions. Most of this comes from passenger vehicles - cars and buses - which contribute 45.1%. The other 29.4% comes from trucks carrying freight. Surely big incentives would have to be implemented so as to help the changeover. So far it just looks as though it is a money grab and not in the interest of buyers of EV's. Food for thought if nothing else. You had a roof over the charging forecourt Lee, makes a refreshing change. Don't forget...It's all for the greater good bud (the greater good!)...All the best
