Your correct. I live near Toronto in Canada. Our winter get easily down to -30C. My neighbor has an electric car. In winter it takes longer to charge and loses at least 1/3 of its range in the winter weather. Here we go long distances many times and we have few charging stations. Worse that then UK. Showing the reality of driving a BEV a longer distance is a great idea, when I’m visiting the UK I can usually drive 300 + miles on a tank of fuel and as you know it takes a few minutes to fill up.
My diesel pickup in Canada has a 140 litre main tank and a reserve tank of 90 litres, which means a range of 1500 kms.
The only time I plug my truck into the mains is to warm up the engine with the block heater during the winter months, usually around -20c.
    Keep up the good work.

A lot of EVs can do over 300 miles now, and at a rapid charger, refuel in about 30 mins. So if you're having a stretch of the legs, getting a drink or food, and going to the toilet, it's done when you get back.

Got to put my oar in again. Several people have said that EVs will be more practical when the infrastructure improves - well that’s true to a point, but for many many people home charging will NEVER be a possibility. Folks who live in terraced houses and street park - sometimes not even in the street where they live. Flat dwellers - especially tower blocks. Folk like me who live in a lodge on a country park where we only have standard 13 amp supply - no three phase fast chargers for us. And that doesn’t take into account the fact that even home electricity is getting expensive. No sorry battery cars are not the answer. Let’s hope these new synthetic fuels come on stream quickly.

To answer your question, I recently bought a new car and *seriously* considered an EV, but after testing a number of them and assessing my driving patterns, I then opted for a diesel….at least for the next 4-5 years. For the same reasons you state…..the infrastructure isn’t up to scratch yet, and it would be more inconvenient for me. The clincher for me came in 2 parts…..I had a series of trips to do in one day, and I couldn’t have done them on time in *any* EV on the market today….so a no-brainer. Secondly, a mate of mine is a chauffeur and sometimes has to do some very long trips , and has admitted that if he ditched his current diesel fleet for EVs, he couldn’t do some of the jobs….at least not without asking his clients to wait for an hour while he charges up…. And on top of that, unless you can charge at home most of the time, the cost of running (leaving aside servicing for now) is much the same from what I can see….I can fill up my 5 Series for £100 and get 700-800 range, and yet EV charging seems to be something like £20-£30 a charge to get 200+ miles (generalising but not far off), so how is that much better than my diesel cost/range? Not much, and certainly not enough to offset the range anxiety and extra waiting time.

    • @woolychewbakker5277
      @woolychewbakker5277 ปีที่แล้ว

Without making things up, why not let us know what this one-day series of trips was that was impossible to do in an EV, any EV.

If the OP chose to stop at IONITY chargers with his Porsche he would have only had to stop twice, both for no longer than 15 mins and at a cost of £0.25/kWh. The Taycan has 800V batteries and can charge from 10% to 80% in 15 mins at IONITY 350kW chargers which were available on his route. He is playing his audience :-)

Then 4 tons are added back on if you do replace the battery and thats just the car the co2 by charging should be added again There is so many hidden costs that no one will tell you

95% of annual driving is on home electric charges, but no worries with an ICE ready to save the day.

Its actually raining very hard at the moment ( after a very long hot summer ), the lights keep flickering because it gets dark by six now. The electric board are having difficulty coping. What will happen if evryone wants to charge their Ev at the same time. its a total nonesense. This summer in july and August the average temp was 38-42 degrees C. This brings me back to the early days of Diesel you had to know where to find a garage who sold it. Many garages refused to sell it because it was DANGEROUS!!!. I could not go to a motorway service station there were no motorways. Slowly more and more garages started to sell it. So I expect the same will happen with electric charging stations. Off course the government could pull their finger out and put more charges in, like Singapore 2 years ago the target was 500 new charging points a month. Considering Singapore is only slightly bigger than London. They must be fully changed up by now. Also by the way I can't have a fast charger in my house the mains cables are struggling with the normal use. 5 cable break downs in the last 10 years.

How long will it take to recoup the costs, why can’t they make a cheap EV power plant that just slips in my car? I already have all the bits required for a EV except the power train and battery, so why does all that need to be scraped and replaced just to go the EV route.

If it’s honestly causing stress and the amount of time it takes to charge- consider Hybrid instead as you’ll have best of both worlds. It’s gotta be better for your peace of mind plus see your family in the right amount of travel time. Take care 😘👍🏻

Love your videos! I made the mistake of getting an EV in September, been nothing but stress.. trying to find a charger, when you do they are all in use and as you mention can add another 40 mins on your time.. and like in your video at 20m40s there always seems to be a Tesla parked in one of the bays not charging. I’m sure people use the bays like disabled/parent bays because they tend to be nearer to the shops and are normally a bit bigger so just park in them for convenience..

Interesting Video. I'l start by coming clean and admit I'm an EV owner (Kia), but I wouldn't say I'm an E-vangelist. There are certainly downsides, and people need to be aware of these. Like the author, I do have a certain amount of charger anxiety, though I offset this by careful planning. I suspect in the early days of ICE cars, this was a similar problem. I can remember many years ago driving around the wilds of Scotland and almost running out of fuel before I found a petrol station.
I am probably one of the more fortunate ones. I have a home charger, and rarely drive distances that require charging en route. Over the last 2.5 years (since starting to use an EV), I have done 6 trips where I had to use public charge points. If you are someone who regularly drives hundreds of miles a day, EVs may not yet be for you. However, range is increasing, battery capacity is getting larger, and charging rates are improving. We will probably never reach the 2 or 3 minutes of the petrol station stop, but on the other hand, few ICE users have someone coming round at night and topping up their tank for 1/6 of the cost.
ICE cars have been around for over 100 years, and the infrastructure has grown to suit. EVs realistically have only been around for 10 or so, given which it's unsurprising that there will be challenges.
So, If you are thinking of going electric, do your research first. Speak to other EV drivers. Can you charge at home? Are there convenient and working chargepoints nearby or on your most likely routes?
Unlike Lee, I will never go back to petrol/diesel. The car is just too nice to drive. Campaign for better and faster public charging (I have done this with my local MP and council). If possible, try to charge before you get below 30-40%.
Like it or not, EVs *ARE* the way the world is going, it's not simply sponsored promoters. Hydrogen, at least for cars and vans, is already dead, and, despite pressure from the fossil fuel industry (who currently produce over 95% of H2), refuelling stations are closing.
This is not intended to be a "holier than thou" argument. I drove ICE cars most of my life, and never gave it a second thought.. But unless you disbelieve global warming, or you don't care about the illness and deaths caused by fossil fuel pollution, we have to make some changes in the way we live. It's not going to be easy, and probably won't be cheap, but it is going to happen, and right now, EVs are one way of going forward.
Think of this as a second industrial revolution. Terrifying, yes, but also exciting.

I agree with many of your points and I do actually like EVs. But the things I think are really flawed with EVs are not the cars themselves and to a lesser degree the infrastructure but it’s the dreadful pollution of Lithium and Cobalt, the processing of said materials and the amount of toxic pollution that creates, that’s before the vast amounts of carbon released from the shipping of the materials to China to make batteries and then shipping them back across the globe. And have you seen the toxic fumes that burning EVs give off? Not the usual burn issues with an ICE car, but those batteries give off horrendous deadly fumes that are far worse to both firefighters and the environment. So yes they may be super clean to us as end users but further down the chain, batteries are dreadful. I also- as a trainee Vehicle Damage Engineer - hydrogen is far from dead - in fact we are being taught all about hydrogen and there is a lot of collaboration with Toyota and their Mirai. Look up hydrogen lorries by Hyundai, JCB hydrogen engines which are in production and in use. There are companies who are making hydrogen ‘generators’ to fuel machines for building sites. The hydrogen infrastructure is being hampered by he powers that be as it’s a threat to their EV agenda. A Hydrogen car has the all the benefits of an EV - quiet, fab to drive with water as it’s emission, without the dark side of batteries.

7:40 *Quite agree with all your comments, a few years ago did consider buying an EV as were stated to be the best thing since **_sliced bread_** however now so glad I opted instead to get a Mercedes (W247) B200 CDi AMG 8 Speed [Diesel] with 81 miles on the clock (ex Demo) with all the latest tricks etc - and got a massive discount of nearly £10k from list price. This has absolutely amazed me, so so quiet, incredible range and over 35 mile journey (A6/A46) to Newark in Eco Mode [Freewheels when lifting throttle] did nearly 90 mpg - hit traffic near end. This car will no doubt still be running in 20 years time and still giving good sensible practical use. I don't make many journeys outside most EV's Range, but during summertime take generally a trip every week of between 150-300 miles Cotswolds, Wales or Cromer - I start to RangeAnxiety when see only have 60 Miles left in tank and warning light comes on !*

Recycle them. It's already being done. Why would any manufacturer let all those valuable metals etc go into landfill? Doesn't make any sense. Better to use them again to make the next batteries than to dig it out of the ground all the time. Nissan leaf batteries may have gone into landfill 10 years ago, and fuelled a Daily Mail headline or two. Of course, they become the myths of the future, ignoring any actual facts.

There are many problems with electric cars but one that I haven't seen mentioned anywhere is security updates - we have all become used to throwing away working mobile phones after 2-3 years because of a lack of security updates. Same reason we update our computers every few years - new software won't necessarily run on old hardware (looking at you Windows 11) and old software is no longer secure. How long will manufacturers continue to provide security updates for EVs? Do they commit to 10 years or more? Go out for a walk and see how many cars you see that are 10+ years old - or 20+ years! With regular maintenance most ICE cars are good for 30+ years and generally don't require software updates beyond the satnav.
