My favourite scene in the film. Cronauer is dejected and ready to quit, until a quick-thinking Garlick puts him on the spot and reminds him of why he needs to keep doing what he does best. And this one very fine example of a scene where you just know all the laughter is genuine.
Exactly right. Cronauer was only exposed day in and day out to the upper level stiffs in the booth and was out of touch with the fact that he was a hero and celebrity to the thousands upon thousands in the field.
Around the point where it starts showing the faces of these soldiers just enjoying the jokes, it was obvious that this scene was meant for them, but at the same time, it felt like it was more of a tribute to Robin just being Robin while these actors just sat and watched him make them jokes.
@@lexkanyima2195 what are you getting at? I was just talking about the camera work and the music and how it switches from face to face. It felt almost like a tribute was being paid to Williams for being the guy he as he entertained the soldiers.
Robin Williams is magic. This scene is so real and the story behind it is amazing. Robin is the only one who could've played this role, and it is one of the greatest performances of all time. Brings us so much hope and laughter and joy. Love you Robin.
He said their names. He saw them as individuals. He cared about them and made them laugh. The ones who didn’t make it home, those names were inscribed on a wall.
The scene right after this is the most poignant of the entire movie, in my opinion. Truck load after truck load of young faces being hauled away potentially to their death in a war they didn’t start or really understand.
Well said. It’s the saddest part of the movie for me. Like you said, truck after truck of young men some of who would be dead or disfigured soon enjoying a brief interlude with the radio star would they could relate to and make them laugh.
man ive been saying that for years. finally someone else says it. the ending of this scene with them being hauled away damn near drove me to tears. you have to forgive me, i ve been on the vietnam virtual wall a lot recently trying to understand what happened over there.
My uncle did two tours in Vietnam as part of the Air Force. He was one of those “survivors,” but the war left him a functioning alcoholic for many years until nearly dying from an esophageal hemorrhage forced him to get sober. I don’t know much about his time there-our family has a “don’t ask, don’t tell” approach to that. We don’t ask, and he doesn’t tell. How many other veterans were left similarly damaged by their experiences in the military? I don’t want to know!
Best scene in the movie. Cronauer was dealing with everything from Dickerson and Hauk and just didnt feel like doing it anymore. And it's not easy to just be "on" like that when you aren't feeling it. But, he recognized quickly these were just a bunch of kids, likely headed into harm's way because of a bunch of bureaucrats. He knew an impromptu show might buoy their spirits a bit, and that (from the standpoint of someone in his position with Armed Forces Radio) THESE were the guys who mattered and not the bureaucrats he was dealing with. And not for nothing but I read once (I forget where) that this was one of those scenes where they just turned the camera on and said "Robin, be brilliant". And he was.
Barry Levinson did the smart thing letting Robin cut loose unscripted for most of the film. He'll be forever remembered for his ability to ad-lib better than anyone.
