Movie Description: Anthony "Swoff" Swofford, a Camus-reading kid from Sacramento, enlists in the Marines in the late 1980s. He malingers during boot camp, but makes it through as a sniper, paired with the usually-reliable Troy. The Gulf War breaks out, and his unit goes to Saudi Arabia for Desert Shield. After 175 days of boredom, adrenaline, heat, worry about his girlfriend finding someone else, losing it and nearly killing a mate, demotion, latrine cleaning, faulty gas masks, and desert football, Desert Storm begins. In less than five days, it's over, but not before Swoff sees burned bodies, flaming oil derricks, an oil-drenched horse, and maybe a chance at killing. Where does all the testosterone go?

For clarification, he didn't get his head busted for saying he "got lost on the way to college". The recruit's brain was reoriented after referring to himself as "I"... a direct violation of assignment. "I" would imply a human being, or person capable of independent thought or action.

My father was in the Army back in the 60s joined at 18. He told me they actually did this back then. Live rounds. He said he heard stories about this happening several years before he joined.
During his training, it was his turn to crawl through this with explosives also going off. Wasnt just sound from a speaker. Actual rounds and actual explosives. They want u to be around it so u dont freeze during actual combat.
He made a good friend during boot camp. My dad was faster than him though. During all this the firing abruptly stopped. My dad had his face in the mud. He slightly turned left and glanced behind him. Was a body just laying there. Was his best friend. Picked his head up through the barbed wire and the round got him.
Seems like a hard way to weed out weak ppl that can't take orders. I understand why they do this bc its savages out there during war. Just sad when something happens like this. I inow this is marines movie, but they also did this in the Army. My dad went on to be an E5 as he called it when I was 9 yrs old. This was over 30+ yrs ago when he told me. I beleive an E5 is a Sargent. I don't know what duties an E5 has in the Army. Maybe they get a platoon and E5 is in charge. If anyone knows and can help me, I'd appreciate it. 🔥🔥

    • @austinshields2341
      @austinshields2341 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Hey, cool story man. E5 is a Sergeant in the Army. Typically they are like “supervisors” to younger ranks (Privates, Corporals, etc.) making sure they know how to do their job properly and are well trained.
E5 typically are Team Leaders of Firing Teams (Team Leader, Rifleman, Grenadier, and Automatic Rifleman). If you’re an E5 on track for promotion or your platoon lacks a proper number of NCOs (Non Commissioned Officers, aka Sergeants), then you may be an E5 as a leader of a Squad (two Firing Teams, Alpha and Bravo). If you ascend to Staff Sergeant (E6) you will be the leader of a Squad, or if your platoon lacks the number of NCOs and you’re on track to promote, you could be assigned Platoon Sergeant. Typically though, Platoon Sergeants are E7 (Sergeant 1st Class), which is a senior NCO advisor to the Platoon Leader, usually O1 or O2 (Junior Officers, Second Lieutenant and First Lieutenant respectively). E6 is considered last rank in NCO chain of command for enlisted soldiers, whereas E7 you break into the ranks of NCOs that advise officers and leadership of your unit. Hope that helps answer some of your questions!

Last question, what's the difference between a Major, Corporal, Captain and Cornell? (Spelling)
Like which order does that go in? I look things up but sometimes I get different info. Many thanks for ur time 🔥

    • @austinshields2341
      @austinshields2341 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

@@daviedood2503 Glad you liked the post! So a Second Lieutenant is O1 (first rank for Commissioned Officers) and First Lieutenant is O2. Both are considered junior officers and their insignia is one vertical bar, gold for O1 and silver for O2. Kind of confusing that silver is better than gold in the military, but this tradition has also passed on to things like Boy Scouts. Don’t ask me why I don’t know lol. Anyways, there are plenty of non-combat roles for officers. For example, when my neighbor was a Lieutenant, he was in charge of all recreation on a base, so he built a baseball field, bought exercise equipment, etc. since there are too many non-combat roles for these officers, I will probably just stick to combat roles:
Second Lieutenants are usually the leader of a platoon element (roughly 45 soldiers at full strength). Not only do they command on the battlefield in real time, but they can also be involved in mission planning but it’s expected that they know how to command on the fly when plans go to shit in the heat of the battle. They are also mentors and responsible for training enlisted soldiers.
Also, Second Lieutenants (usually the most experienced on track for promotion) can be the Executive Officer of a company, which is the right hand man of the Company Commander (usually a First Lieutenant, can also be a Captain, which is one rank above O2). This is in training, once the unit gains more experience it is common for the Executive Officer (XO) rise to the rank of O2 while the Company Commander becomes O3 for deployment.
First Lieutenants are usually Company Commanders and do basically the same things as Second Lieutenants, only on the scale of the Company (most often three rifle platoons and a weapons platoon, plus a smaller Headquarters platoon). To be fair, they actually deal with a bit more since the HQ platoon also deals in more logistics and other auxiliary sections.
I mentioned the weapons platoon as well. A rifle company usually is made up of rifle wielding soldiers, grenadiers (rifle with grenade launcher) and a few automatic rifles (like a light machine gun). The weapons platoon is made up entirely of specialty weapons like medium machine guns, mortars, and anti tank weapons. A First Lieutenant would lead this platoon normally due to more experience. They would direct fire on the battlefield to support the rifle platoons.
For your next question, the ranks can be kind of confusing, especially for people from different countries. I’ll break it down real quick. Btw Cornell is spelled “Colonel”. I know, it doesn’t make sense haha. (E is for enlisted and O is for officer).
      E1 - Private
      E2 - Private Second Class
      E3 - Private First Class
      E4 - Specialist or *Corporal*
      E5 - Sergeant
      E6 - Staff Sergeant
      E7 - Sergeant First Class
E8 - Master Sergeant or First Sergeant
E9 - Sergeant Major or Command Sergeant Major
      O1 - Second Lieutenant
      O2 - First Lieutenant
      O3 - *Captain*
      O4 - *Major*
      O5 - Lieutenant Colonel
      O6 - *Colonel*
      O7 - Brigadier General
      O8 - Major General
      O9 - Lieutenant General
O10 - General or General of the Army (5 Star general, only one and only in time of war).
Even though Specialist and Corporal are both E4, technically the Corporal outranks the Specialists. Specialists are usually leaders of small teams of enlisted men, or they have specialized roles (like medics, engineers, etc.) Corporals are considered junior Noncommissioned Officers and take more of a leadership, training, and mentoring role. Usually these guys turn into sergeants if they stay in the military for 6-8 years.
As for the Captain, Major, and Colonel, if we’re talking only combat roles, play similar roles, only on a different scale. It can vary a bit, but I’ll just use a standard breakdown:
      Second Lieutenant - Platoon Leader
First Lieutenant - Company Executive Officer
      Captain - Company Commander
      Major - Battalion Executive Officer
      Lieutenant Colonel - Battalion Commander
Colonel - Brigade Commander (1500-3000 soldiers)
Brigadier General - Division Deputy Commander
Major General - Division Commander (10,000 - 15,000 ish soldiers)
      Lieutenant General - Corps Commander (20,000 - 40,000 soldiers)
General - Army Group Commander (hundreds of thousands of soldiers)
Side note: becoming any General rank is quite difficult, so a lot of times when guys are in the Army for 20+ years, it’s pretty common to see them top out at Colonel because Generals are limited in number. Also, have in mind that each Headquarters unit of each sized unit will have various officers of lower rank than the Commander called “Staff Officers” that help with various admin tasks.
Hope all that helps! If you have anymore questions feel free to ask. Cheers

No, it isn't.. But u are onto something, definitely..... They need a balance between their "im ok, you're ok" upbringing vs th diehard military model - - - - preferably leaning heavily towards th military model but, arguably, Navy or CG as a step up

@rimrunz1795 literally what makes me mad is this:
I think boot camp is cool bc the drill instructors and recruits can get into this mindset of intensity being okay, and how the DI goes out of his way to be crazy and critical (in the marines)
But what makes me mad is when this turns into making soldiers killing machines, hazing, and other permanent things
Permanence is the key. The military would be great if it didn't dumb down human dignity, but I guess that's what you need to do when you kill ppl. God hates war and death, but he loves good work

    • @BlossomField91
      @BlossomField91 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Or... it's based on what USMC boot camp is actually like and has always been like. R. Lee Ermey in FMJ didn't come with the stuff he says himself in his GySgt Hartman role, he was a real USMC DI in the 1960s and learned it there.
There were realistic boot camp scenes in movies before FMJ. Go watch The DI (1957), though that's obviously "family friendly", Jack Webb's DI character says stuff you hear Hartman say in FMJ. That's because the Marines were involved in the production of that movie.
