Right at the end , he shakes a guys hand and asks if he got his picture and tells him merry Christmas , made sure everyone got a pic w him stand up guy , sad loss for all,
As a British soldier of 22 yrs I can tell you the first time I saw and heard the Retreat on a US base in Germany I was wondering what the hell was happening but like any good soldier I just imitated everyone else. The last time I heard it was in 2004 at Camp Arifjan in Kuwait while availing myself of the services of your fine hospitality on a spot of R n R from Iraq. As I was in uniform I felt a salute was in order and began to wonder why we Brits don’t salute our own flag. Thank you and God Bless America.
andy taylor Andy . As an air cadet (ATC) in the mid to late 70s we visited some RAF bases and they had the turn and face the flag pole when the flag was being taken down thing. I just sort of assumed (TBH, never really thought of it ) all services in all camps/barracks/bases would do it . Come to think of it later on (I was TA [engineers]) there was no flag raising/lowering ceremonies that I was aware of.
Wait you guys don’t salute your flag?? Well learn something new everyday. Here all this time I thought it was just a standard thing all military’s did. Didn’t know we were different in that respect.
wakcedout while in America you salute the state eg the flag in Britain we only salute the queen (and officers because they represent the queen) meaning no flag saluting is needed
Ages ago we used to salute the state flags but when the first shot was fired they changed that quick as loyalty lied with people not the government. People will still consider themselves a Texan or whatever but it helps to have a stronger government in times of war. To bad we are always at war, maybe to keep them from losing their grip on the states.
Two things make me emotional. Retreat and Robin Williams reaction. He showed respect, even though he didn’t know what was going on. Also, kids today have no idea who Robin Williams was. His political stance was anti war, but he supported the troops. Such a loss.
The man had no clue what was going on, but was intelligent enough and respectful enough to remove his hat and come to attention. Great tribute to one of our most amazing minds. .
igeto12 well this video isn’t the right place to say that. He was just being respectful of their procedure as you would in any facility, be it a school or a business place. Was he supposed to continue his set?
igeto12 man what are you on about? It’s an American military base with American people in it. There’s nothing wrong with showing respect. Why are you bringing up foreigners?
This was a typical Robin moment: deep down inside of his hilarious exterior was a gentle compassionate man. Once he heard the alarms go off, he didn’t know what was going on. But once he saw how everyone turned around from his set, he immediately read the room and took his hat off in solidarity. He looked so earnest and grounded just standing there as the alarm went off. Then, once the alarm stopped and everyone turned back around, in typical Robin fashion, all the seriousness was gone and he turned the impromptu moment into a laughing moment. I miss the man so much 💔
BloodPaladin88 You'd think names like that are illegal. Oh well they can have fun with their games while their kid is getting bullied because of his/her name
I love how Robin had the humility to be like "there is something going on that I don't understand, but it means alot to these people, so I will stand here silently and respectfully until this is over" A wonderful human being, the world misses him
This would have thrown a LOT of lesser comics off of their game and fucked up their set. Robin just goes and freestyles it, makes everything funnier. Fucking comic genius.

This is just amazing every time I see it. The switch from him being top centre like the man that he was to acknowledging that something bigger than him is occurring even though he doesn’t understand what's happening and then back to him being the centre man and the crowd cheering him. It says everything about union and the individual at the same time. It’s just beautiful.
I met him on that tour, and he was an incredibly kind and gentle man. At 1:18 he lowers his head because he was in awe of all of us there. He truly appreciated it.
It is the saddest of ironies that such an incredible, talented, selfless man, who was also the finest of American Patriots, was so tormented internally. The world became somehow less without him. I hope our Lord will take pity on him given that he lived his life in a way that all should strive for.
He was “So tormented internally” because he was being utterly destroyed by Alimony payments to his ex-wife, likely paired with emotional abuse and personal threats from her. Robin Williams own children had to fight an extensive legal battle just to get the inheritance that he wanted them to receive. The American divorce courts killed Robin Williams. Just like all the other divorced middle aged men who make up the highest suici de demographic in the US.
Man if only I could’ve been blessed to see this man live especially on deployment. What a treat. Only been to Arifjan once and that was to have a cyst taken out of my buttcheek. Not the best memory of that place
For the non military persons. The guy who yelled "Retreat" was actually correct. Reveille is the bugle call first thing in the MORNING. "To the Colors" also known as "Retreat" is the bugle call when lowering the flag at the end of the day. So to call it "Retreat" is technically correct. It's incorrect to call it "Reveille". That only occurs when the flag is being raised or to awaken and summon people in a camp or garrison at the beginning of the day.
I like how he was like "Oh oh...." And honors all who are serving and who have served as they lowered the flag..... So few folks would pause a show for that. He was a class act.
Great clip, but can I say my favourite moment was at 3:45 Just him wanting to make sure that troop got his photo with him. He seemed like such a kind, humble man.
A buddy of mine worked security for Robin on a 24-hour shift once and loved every minute of it. Had nothing but great things to say about the man - genuinely kind and considerate, always willing to meet with his fans and spend some quality time with them. He didn't like most of the celebrities he worked with because of their crap attitudes but he adored Robin and one or two others, and that's it. Best part of this video is how quickly he figures out what's going on and immediately goes into "respectful mode". So sad his life was cut short. We need more like him.
I knew this about Robin, but like Mer Kitten, I'd love to know who the other one or two were. One thing I'd like to add though about celebrities: I feel like we give some of them too hard a time about their egos. Hear me out. They have spent untold amounts of time being told how amazing they are, and it being *proven to them* how popular and so on they are...you should expect their egos to grow in relation to that. I'm not saying we give every one of them a pass, some of them are entirely unreasonable, especially the truly f'ing awful ones, but at the same time, some allowance should be made, after all they're no less a product of their environment than the rest of us.
This man.....breaks my heart he is gone. He made so many people laugh and smile and the fact that he wasn't happy.............God bless your soul Robin Williams ❤
@Brad1980 depression is a serious illness.. Extremely serious. If you haven't noticed, most of the funniest actors/ actresses around us, die bc of suicide. Money doesn't buy happiness, and it never will. He saw that. He felt that. He knew that. Btw, the love and respect he showed for our military, regardless of his situation, was absolutely amazing! GOD BLESS HIM!
A clip that shows Robin's true character. He could have kept making jokes while everyone was turning around and saluting, but instead he chose to remove his hat and keep a respectful silence. A wonderful man and a great comedian. We'll all miss you
God bless Robin Williams and the Troops you know what, Robin Williams made an effective strike in the war effort without shedding any blood. As good as his personal visit was to the morale of our troops, imagine what it did to the morale of the enemy if they knew this hilarious genius of a man in all his harmless and peaceable behavior stood upon the ground over there and helped people laugh. . . And at that moment he was 100% safe, he could say and do what he wanted and the combined military of our enemy could do nothing to him, they could not even look at him without having permission. God bless America, our troops, and Robin Williams no matter what this nation and those people are all blessings we have done nothing to earn, Thank you.
I grew up on a military base, and when they played this at the end of the day, when the flag went down, you could hear it all over town everyone would stop what they were doing and turn towards headquarters where the flag was being taken down. This even included people pulling over their cars to the side of the road and either sitting quietly or getting out to stand by the side of the road and salute.
awww at the end he said "Merry Christmas." he took time out of his life to preform for the troops during the holiday. Truly a great man. RIP sweet Prince

My dad was a retired Marine. I remember delivering pizzas on Camp Lejeune one evening when I was younger. Most Marines you see walking the sidewalks stair down at it so they don't have to salute any stickers on cars. This one night I saw Marines jogging and walking as I was headed out down Holcomb Blvd. All of a sudden, they all stopped faced the same direction and saluted. I was dumbfounded but aware enough to pull my car over and step out and face the same direction. I watched as they lowered the flag and played the Retreat Call. I will never forget that. God bless these fighting men of the USMC.
Yea I was pretty young for Steve Irwin and that one fucked me up because it was my dream job to work at the Australia Zoo 🇦🇺 and maybe even meet him, and my hero and chances of that happening were dashed away at one time. Bowie hit me hard too but he got to write his goodbye letter to everyone with his last album. Bourdain was rough because he was a person who always talked about his depression not letting him get out bed, and overcoming it, but it took him in the end and it felt kinda hopeless for a minute for people who struggle with that. Robin still is sore for me, my sisters and I were obsessed with him and even got into LOZ because of him (Which was just my baby sister and I watching my older sister play OOT and MM) it was another real let down of someone who openly struggled losing the battle, but then I watched Bobcat tearfully talking about why Robin did it and him wanting to leave this world as Robin Williams which was quickly fading from his Parkinsons variant, it matured my idea of why people do take their own lives. Although I will NEVER condone it, I can now come at it with a more understanding perspective.
It was Chester Bennington for me. A friend only 6 years older died unexpectedly just before my birthday that year, my grandma was dying, and the one bit of hope I had left ripped my heart out and shit in the hole she left in my chest, and I found a way to stick around. Then a month later, with a wife, family, and resources to do anything he felt like, and he couldn't. Four years later I can listen to their music again, but still hard to think about it.
He is an amazing human. He spent so much time entertaining the troops and genuinely caring about others. I can only hope that deep down he knew this world loved him.
I have watched this video over 100 times. This is the only time that watching Robin Williams has made me cry. The Honor and Respect he shows those who serve our country makes me proud to have served and proud to be a fan of such a worthy individual. Rest In Peace.
I forgot how long Retreat was. When I was at Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas, I got caught outside a few times when Retreat started and had to figure out which way the flag was so if I was in uniform, I could salute. It's certain little things like this that bring back memories of my Air Force days. God bless ya, Robin. Class act right there.
I live in San Francisco and would see Robin around town from time to time. He always seemed to know when you recognised him and would smile and make a funny face or gesture. He was very kind and very sensitive of others. I generally don't care that much about celebrities but I truly was very sad when Robin passed. Tears were shed.
At 1:17 he puts his head down and you see his face is somber, and this is after the military has presented arms. Makes me wonder what was on his mind at that point. I figured that was the moment he understood what we do. Great guy! Saw him in Afghanistan.
I remember that show I was there with a buddy of mine. It was a great show to see. Had nothing better to do while time passed before we left on the freedom bird and home to the big p/x
Thank you all for your deployments and sacrifices. I was a dependent on a Navy Base in the early 70’s and we ALWAYS stopped what we were doing during Reveille and Retreat. When I joined the AF I looked forward to being in uniform and saluting our flag at that time of the day.
Same here. Navy brat. If my Dad and I were at Coronado or my Mom and I were at Rota or Moron when that was announced everything stopped and we faced the flag.
Not to be that guy, but Williams was one of many comedians people knew as a “joke thief.” Not that he was entirely a copy of others but just putting it out there as a fan of comedy
3:46 love how he keeps everyone smiling and makes sure he didn't miss anyone even checking if one of the guys got the photo he wanted to take. Such a great selfless comedic legend he was.

Thank you and God Bless America.
andy taylor
Andy .
Thank you for your service!
'Did you get your photo?...Merry Christmas' What a special person we have lost. :(
A man with a soul that hurt so much but he still made us all laugh and cry
His last photo was standing with a young woman seems to have been an employee in a convenience store he visited. A deeply generous man.
Special to whom
@@tomsimmo5789 All of us
Yeah I noticed that as-well, what a nice guy, I miss him
Two things make me emotional.
Great tribute to one of our most amazing minds.
.
igeto12 what?
Robin Williams is a legend but jesus christ it doesnt tkae a rocket scientist to figure that out
igeto12 well this video isn’t the right place to say that. He was just being respectful of their procedure as you would in any facility, be it a school or a business place. Was he supposed to continue his set?
igeto12 man what are you on about? It’s an American military base with American people in it. There’s nothing wrong with showing respect. Why are you bringing up foreigners?
@@StukaSteven ???dude i have no idea what to do in this situation apart from to stand and be quiet like him because.... not everyones american.
Rest in Peace Robin. Thank you for visiting us troops when we were deployed. We appreciated you visiting and making us laugh..
Torpedomtb he so did 👌
AJ isn't a deployment
This was a typical Robin moment: deep down inside of his hilarious exterior was a gentle compassionate man. Once he heard the alarms go off, he didn’t know what was going on. But once he saw how everyone turned around from his set, he immediately read the room and took his hat off in solidarity. He looked so earnest and grounded just standing there as the alarm went off. Then, once the alarm stopped and everyone turned back around, in typical Robin fashion, all the seriousness was gone and he turned the impromptu moment into a laughing moment. I miss the man so much 💔
Honestly feel like you could read how he just started to sit there and enjoy the moment knowing it was special
What a delightful human being.
This and the fact that he named his daughter "Zelda" earns him a place on my wall of fame.
I hope one day I can "earn" the right to be on some random guys imaginary "wall of fame", one day... one day...
***** I called her Bowser.
***** Someone actually named their kid "Dovahkiin" (not even kidding) and Bethesda gave them all their games for free.
BloodPaladin88 You'd think names like that are illegal. Oh well they can have fun with their games while their kid is getting bullied because of his/her name
dartzu Someone, somewhere, can't remember where, decided to name his/her/their kid hashtag (don't know if it's # or hashtag though)
I love how Robin had the humility to be like "there is something going on that I don't understand, but it means alot to these people, so I will stand here silently and respectfully until this is over"
A wonderful human being, the world misses him
That was a true bro there grabbing and tossing his battle buddy’s cover.
100%.
This would have thrown a LOT of lesser comics off of their game and fucked up their set. Robin just goes and freestyles it, makes everything funnier. Fucking comic genius.
No doubt, RIP Robin!
Yup, he was one of a kind. RIP
He was and still is the king of comedy.

Yeah! I miss him too. Legend for sure.
Incredible human being first, comedian second, actor third.
I remember when i heard about his death. I was shocked and refused to believe it. I thought i misheard but no, our favorite funny man passed away. It was one of the few celebrity deaths that had an impact on me.
I had a friend take their life, if only one person had been there to say "stop, you mean something to me" who knows what might have been.
I remember an interview he gave where he talked about this event at length and how it touched him that his audience that day were very special.
*He's so intelligent & imaginative! He doesn't know what's going on but he quickly figures it out, he doesn't fret or fuss or interrupt with questions or complaints; he has the wit to improvise a routine that is so relatable. A genius and a just plain good person.*
10 years ago today, this great man was taken from us.
Rest In Peace, Robin. Thank you for everything.
Happy veterans day yall. Thank you for your sacrifices. Today as I post is 11/11/21 and while remembering many gone, this event makes me proud. Both for my love of Robin Williams but also my pride for this nation and my fellow vets. 🇺🇸 From one vet to another, I SALUTES yalls service appreciate ya. Enjoy the day. Also, remembering Robin Williams, what an amazing performer.
There will never be another Robin Williams again. We miss you dearly sir.
he's so awesome. And I love the way he just went right into a whole act of improv.
A good comedian can make people laugh. A great comedian can take the unexpected and act like it was part of his plan all along.

Miss you immensely in 2024 dear Robin 😭😭😭✊❤️ from Iran
He was such a legend. Immediately he had material to get his audience laughing but huge respect for our military and the traditions.
Yoooo the patrol cap pass at 49 seconds was perfect, one shot one kill!
I'm curious as to why him, and the guy that tossed it. Didn't have their covers on in the first place, since they were outside. Someone will inform me I am sure, I can only hope not a snarky as some of the people making comments here.
@@krsanth-4142 probably just leniency, guys deployed, it's Robin Williams. in that little area for only that time. Who know's its all up to leadership and the big guys, sometimes you got full hooah guys.
“Pack up the shit! We gotta go!”
You’re missed deeply Robin.
the respect from Robin Williams, he stopped and took his hat off even though he didn't know yet he still didn't take the piss.

No other comedian I have seen can improvise like Robin Williams, he was a one of a kind.
Yeah, we all miss him.
I met him on that tour, and he was an incredibly kind and gentle man. At 1:18 he lowers his head because he was in awe of all of us there. He truly appreciated it.
Robin Williams is the #1 Comedian that performed for troops.. What a kind an gentle soul showing so much respect for our men and women in the service
It is the saddest of ironies that such an incredible, talented, selfless man, who was also the finest of American Patriots, was so tormented internally. The world became somehow less without him. I hope our Lord will take pity on him given that he lived his life in a way that all should strive for.
I certainly hope so too hopefully the Lord can give them a break
He was “So tormented internally” because he was being utterly destroyed by Alimony payments to his ex-wife, likely paired with emotional abuse and personal threats from her.
Robin Williams own children had to fight an extensive legal battle just to get the inheritance that he wanted them to receive.
The American divorce courts killed Robin Williams. Just like all the other divorced middle aged men who make up the highest suici de demographic in the US.
@@kgpspyguy more like he had lewy-body dementia
@@kgpspyguy yeah...no. he had dementia, lewy-body dementia.

Man if only I could’ve been blessed to see this man live especially on deployment. What a treat. Only been to Arifjan once and that was to have a cyst taken out of my buttcheek. Not the best memory of that place
Oh my. That's quite a memory.
The respect he showed here. He was a good man and Thank You Robin
I like how he was like "Oh oh...." And honors all who are serving and who have served as they lowered the flag..... So few folks would pause a show for that. He was a class act.
Men and women willing to fight and die for you. It boggles the mind. Thank you all.
And Mr. Williams, the world is a darker place without your light.
Great clip, but can I say my favourite moment was at 3:45 Just him wanting to make sure that troop got his photo with him. He seemed like such a kind, humble man.
one of the few truly kind, loving people, out of the billions of us that there are on this planet...
Holy cap I neve seen that part !!!?
Great dude miss him need more laughs in the world!🤙
A buddy of mine worked security for Robin on a 24-hour shift once and loved every minute of it.
Just curious, who were the other two your frien d liked?
Interesting “story,” Robin NEVER had bodyguards “security.” SMH🙄
…before anyone asks, I’m his nephew, so I should know… . .IDIOT!
Robin: What was that?
Boots: Reveille!

@3:47 'Did you get your photo good? Merry Christmas'. An absolute gentleman.
that's 100% my favorite part. he was there to brighten the days of those men and women.
We'll all miss you
seems that pure, genuinely god souls like Robin Williams are a dying breed these days.
You guys are really being ridiculous, acting like Robin performing stand-up had any affect on the war. 😂
I think most people would make the connection and understand to stop the jokes, I understood what was going on
I grew up on a military base, and when they played this at the end of the day, when the flag went down, you could hear it all over town everyone would stop what they were doing and turn towards headquarters where the flag was being taken down. This even included people pulling over their cars to the side of the road and either sitting quietly or getting out to stand by the side of the road and salute.
Yes! My dad would stop the car (everyone would) and we’d get out and face the flag, even though we couldn’t see it.
awww at the end he said "Merry Christmas." he took time out of his life to preform for the troops during the holiday. Truly a great man. RIP sweet Prince
R.I.P to an absolute legendary comedian.
Sadly missed.
I was stationed, at Camp Arifjan, and saw this happen!

The only celebrity death that I cried over, that made me legitimately depressed.
Him, and Chadwick Boseman.
Same. A co-worker told me he'd read it on Yahoo. I thought the co-worker had to be wrong about who. RAN back to my desk to look it up and cried.
Miss Steve Irwin too.
I have watched this 100 times, RIP Robin. Thank You
+Scott Fowle Me too, it's one of my favorite moments.
NOt a hundred times but a lot. So moving, so funny. So sad that he was in such a dark place he had to take his life.
“Did you get your photo? Merry Christmas, Boss.”
What a dude.
I miss him so much. Wonderful man, wonderful humour.
At 1:17 he puts his head down and you see his face is somber, and this is after the military has presented arms. Makes me wonder what was on his mind at that point. I figured that was the moment he understood what we do. Great guy! Saw him in Afghanistan.

It still makes me sad that he's gone. We all carry a weight. Some is heavier than others.
