  • After years of travelling by bus through countries across the world, what should be a simple journey from Pattaya to Ayutthaya seems such a strain. Am I getting too old for this?

      GOD YES!!!!! split it into a backpack and a carry on maybe, or check in a smaller suitcase. That rolling trunk is only good when you can strap a smaller bag on top of it and roll em both on some level area...or even down the escalator.

      Now you are in Thailand full time, you should save your travel for when you have a solid homebase established, so you can leave the case there, only travel with what you need, at the moment you have everything with you.

    Sir Eddy you need to rent a decent condo in Pattaya and not stay in Hotels, that way you pay less and can store your luggage, when you travel you can simply take a backpack and bingo your all set. Who wants to drag a 20KG bag everywhere.

    Don’t know what your long term plans are there Eddy, but I’d say pick a place to base yourself for say 6 months and rent a condo then travel to all the places you may want to go but with just a small trolly dolly case in tow to travel light and easily

      Travelling is quite stressful I suppose if you are tight for time Eddie. Now you don't have so many deadlines to keep and yes being in Thailand ought to keep you occupied. No you aren't too old but you are used to getting around quickly having to be somewhere. Relax Eddie 😊

    Hi Eddy,
    You should give the train a try. I generally try to avoid buses in Thailand unless absolutely necessary! Too stressful, cramped, and not to mention the Thai road accidents which occur all too frequently. There's one train a day from Pattaya to Bangkok (leaves around 2.30pm) and there are loads of trains from Bangkok's main station (Hua Lampong) to Ayutthaya daily.
    Granted the train takes longer to Bangkok (about 4 hours), but it's comfortable, safe and plenty of overhead space for your luggage. Also, it's dirt cheap - about 30 baht to Bangkok and similarly cheap price from Bangkok to Ayutthaya.
    Anyway, enjoy your time in Ayutthaya, Eddy, it's a lovely place!

    • @thefonzkiss
      @thefonzkiss 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Four hour train trip instead of a 90 min private car hire for 1000 baht inc tolls? You’re nuts.

    • @ReadyFreddyGo
      @ReadyFreddyGo 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@thefonzkiss if you're on a two week holiday where time is at a premium, then yes, the car is the better option. But if you're on a long holiday (few months) or retired, then I think the train is the better option. You can relax and enjoy the journey - pedestrian travel as Eddy puts it. Also, if four hours puts you off the train, then there is a rapid one on the weekend (Sat & Sun only) which does the journey in half the time and has air-con.

    Dont despair Ed, travel is stressful for all of us. Maybe get away a little earlier in morning if going by bus. As others have said, get yourself a base, settle down a bit, you dont have to see it all straight away. From your base you can go anywhere in S.E.Asia within a couple hours, cheap flights abound.
    At your base, get to know neighbours etc., some Thai friends, plan a couple trips each year, start to live the life of retirement Ed. Not too much booze and you'll be ok. Good luck.

    Don’t know why you didn’t go by train, it’s so much easier, fun and more comfortable! I’am 10 years older and realised that it’s better to have a home base here, then have short trips to other locations, then you’ll only need to carry a small bag! I think once you find somewhere to stay long term and it’s affordable, then still travel maybe once a month or so to other places, it’s so nice to come back to your own long term base to recuperate!

    I repeat my comment I did 2 weeks ago when you were talking about your strange relationship to alcohol: „I don’t drink as much alcohol anymore - I don’t enjoy the nightlife as before - don’t go out a lot“ My dear Eddie - you are getting old! Please don’t feel offended - it happens to anyone of us! Just be honest to yourself - maybe spend your next vacation on a cruise or a city trip in Rome. Like other people at your age. I know - it’s difficult to accept - especially with your experience and passion for the life in the red lights for so many years. But if that time comes to us it will make us happier to start a new chapter in life rather than trying to hold something which has gone.

Carry it on your back if walking and wheel it when at airports etc., you wnt regret it. No need to check in baggage. Leave everything else at your base. Hi Eddie….. no…you’re not too old to travel. I’m 72 and still travel. I also had quadruple cardiac artery bypass surgery. My doctors give me a clean bill of health to travel anywhere I want.
    I also met an elderly European couple in Chiang Mai in their 80’s. The wife pushing a walker. They still travel. The oldest backpacker traveling the world was in his 90’s.
    You’re still young compared to some of us.
    What you need to do is travel as a minimalist. I used to pack a big 45 to 50 litre convertible backpack. Then I went smaller to a 35 litre convertible backpack. And now I’m down to a 21 litre convertible backpack, and a crossbody sling bag of about three litres.
    I’m allowed to carry it on the plane, never pay for checked bags, never drag them around, because I wear them. My bags don’t even weigh half of what your luggage weighs.
    One bag, carry on, minimalist travel is easier and more free. There are web sites and TH-cam videos that talk all about this.
    Take care my friend. 👍🏼👏🏼👋🏼 🌴🌴🌴 ✈️ 🌴🌴🌴 ☸️

Back on the drink, nowhere to stay outside hotels, a 30 day tourist visa, having to travel by bus - "131 baht it cost", and most of all no health insurance cover at all. It's a-you-tah-ya (Ayutthaya). Quick note: there is no "th" in Thai, so when you see a "th" together the sound is a hard t (as in Thailand). They write it like that because they also have a soft "t" which is like a combination of a d and t. The reason they sent you to Morchit and not Ekkamai is because Morchit has buses that go north, whereas Ekkamai mostly has buses that go to the east. Morchit is also in the north of Bangkok much closer to Ayutthaya.

    Reduce the luggage Eddie, surely after all these years you know you need a three of tee shirts, a couple of pairs of shorts (one to double as swim wear), one pair of comfortable walking shoes, one pair of trousers and you are good to go. I am approaching 60, just backpacked three months in Central America with 7kgs of luggage in total and it was plenty for all seasons, makes travel so much more comfortable. Less is more! You also need to give yourself time to recover from long road journeys, I had to endure a couple of 14 hour trips in very uncomfortable local buses as it was the only way to get between destinations when on a budget, but it takes a good day or two to then fully get over the journey!

    Highly recommend using Bolt App in Thailand instead of taxis. The only issue is they can’t pick you up/drop you off from/to certain locations. I believe they get beaten up or threatened by the Thai taxi mafia. So they don’t normally do airports and some other places which are full of taxis. Example Kata Noi Beach in Phuket, Bolt drivers refuse to pick you up from there due to the Thai taxi drivers owning that territory by the beach.

    another tip is bin the cotton T shirts, they take forever to dry for one thing. The new craze, which I find really practical, is "sport" shirts. Polyester maybe, dunno, you can stuff em in a bag, they don't come out wrinkled and they dry in a heartbeat. I actually only take a couple jeans, pair of shorts, and them board shorts they wear in villages. Oh, and some of those Thai "silk" numbers found on Sukhumvit near Robinsons, guy has a shop full, also dry fast, you can feel the breeze cooling your skin. I've got one from 2007 that still has it's creases, kinda spooky. Think it's really dacron but who cares.

      I live in Udon Thani & been Vientiane loads of times over the last 20+ years & it’s changed as the Chinese are there building away.
      A lot of the young back packers say give it a miss but I think it’s worth a few days if your in the region. Hotels are more expensive than Thailand, food is about the same & Lao beer is about half the price & better than anything Thailand produces. It’s communist & they got laws against foreigners going with Lao women if they are not married to them in accordance with Lao Family Law. So it’s not for Mongers & you not getting any Lao girls back to your room. Any other Nationality they don’t care. The got the speed train that is an hour to the back packer hub Vang Vieng & another hour to sleepy nice UNESCO Luang Prabang. On the Thailand side Udon Thani is the Big City. There is a bus that goes to/from Udon to Vientiane & costs 80 THB but we can’t get it going as they won’t wait while you get your visa. Coming back we can get though. It’s 60 Km from Udon Thani to the border at Nong Khai. The railway station is close to the bridge & the train from Udon Thani costs 11 THB. At the border you get stamped out of Thailand then pay 35 THB for a bus ticket & jump on the next bus over the bridge. In the Lao side you need a passport photo & a pen & the visa is $40 & you can pay in THB but then it figures out about $50. Once on the Lao side it is 20 Km to Vientiane & all the touts are on you but look to right & you see buses & they are 30 THB to Vientiane. If your in the area & using Udon Thani as a Base you can get a bus to Loei which takes about 3 hours & then there are mini buses to go to Chiang Khan that take an hour & a bit. Nong Khai is only 60 Km up the road & the border Town at the bridge. Bueng Kan & Nakhon Phanom are less than 4 hours by bus & you can put in the names of f the above places & find plenty of Vids. For Vientiane put in the following & that will take you to a Vid from only 1 week ago. They are a middle aged British couple but I think they showed all that is worth seeing in Vientiane but there are more Bars. I think Vientiane is worth 2 full days & 3 nights but I don’t think many would want to spend a week there. A FEW DAYS IN VIENTIANE FAIRY AND THE HUN.

    I remember taking a mini bus outside victory monument when visiting Ayuthaiya

    Part of it is the massive change of temperature from English winter to the heat and humidity of SE Asia.
    I'm fit and healthy but definitely makes lugging a case around more of an issue.

    Eddie, I appreciate your comments about the age related strain of lugging your bags about 🙃
    I do the same sort of journey, but in the station, once I know where I am headed I engage a porter to struggle with the luggage😁..
    A bus for Ayutthaya in Bangkok leaves from Khao San Road - somehow that's deemed convenient, and there is also a cheap train service Bangkok to Ayutthaya.
